Eau de Portugal

Portugal is a moderately creamy orange, with initially more blossom, and later some peel, almost like the very top notes of Habit Rouge had been extracted out. Whatever they've added gives it a soapy vibe which is nice and not overdone. Almost as scant in the base notes as their Limes, but slightly more residual sweetness.

Top notes are great. It's fresh and smoothly citrus. There is a nice depth and cold refreshing feeling from it. Starts off very lemon and lime. The orange elements come out shortly after. On my skin I get a lot of lime from this and neroli/orange blossom. Like an old fashioned cologne (4711 or Farina 1709), this doesn't last long. It is supposed to be an enjoyable blast that freshens up then fades away. I find it lasts more than one hour but less than two. This does feel like it has a bit more depth and quality of composition to it than quite a lot of other scents like this. The bottle is horrendously dated and Trumpers asthetic is a bit late 80s/early 90s looking (in a bad way), but it's good for the survivors and hidden gems like Portugal in their lineup. GFT has more strength to it, offers a similar experience from the same house. GFT is a bit brasher and seems almost harsh in comparison to this though. Both are good but I think this is nicer. This is also nicer and better value than sun, orange blossom or Euphoria from lush. I think it's a step above 4711 in terms of sophistication. Castile from Penhaligons has a similar scent (more soapy/herbal), lasts easily twice as long on the skin. But is unfortunately discontinued (plus was more than twice the price anyway). Think this is a fairly good replacement and adds enough of its own to be worth buying.

Of the three Trumpers I regularaly use, this would be the working-horse choice. Nowhere near as subtle as the other two, it nonetheless works well early in the (tropical) mornings to freshen up one's day. Doesn't last very long in the heat and humidity, though.

The musk at bottom smells cheap.

so. first of, the scent starts off strong with forest, pine and a gin & tonic scent. after 20 min, its a very soft Blood-Orange scent, barely there, fresh and herb-like. after an hour its gone. its just not there anymore. would i buy this again? no. Its an EDT and i dont usually get those but are they really only supposed to last an hour barely? The scent is great so if they put that int a edp then i think itd be wonderful. I recommend this to folks who dont like the strong scent of perfumes and only need a hint of smell on them. for that its very natural.

The open is so beautiful! Neroli; Lemon; Biter Orange = Fresh, realistic citrus; slightly powdery, white flora; Orange rind. This last 2 minutes or so. What remains thereafter, is Neroli, bitter Orange & Musk, that's light and airy. The Musk is a clean linen type, which eventually becomes sour and body-odur like. However, the other ingredients are nice quality. Very similar to, Geo. F. Trumper Cologne, and last just as long; a couple hours maximum.

Sour citrus. Yuck! I guess this is neroli. I guess I hate neroli.

This is my 4711 (which I have yet to experience, to be honest)... what I mean is: It's inexpensive It's fresh It's old school, but not "old man" ish. It's perfect right after the shower It does NOT last long... which is ok, because unlike to reapply my scents midday. The smell: initial blast of lemon and bitter orange, makes my mouth water a little. This fades in about 10 minutes. 10 minutes to 1 hour in: neroli is sparkling very softly through the air just over the skin with musk trailing behind. This musk has a "handsome vintage wool coat" essence to it that works on my skin so well 1 hour and beyond: nonexistent. The combination of these ingredients reminds me of the scent of a fresh wild rose, with the lemony-floral combined with earthiness... I love it. I will always buy this. It lasts much longer on clothes, and I actually like to spritz this into the inside of my hats and collared shirts.

If I'm not mistaken, this scent or another very similar "from Mr. Trumper" has a history. In one of Agatha Christie's Poirot episodes,"How does your garden grow?", Hercule Poirot (alias David Suchet) buys this fragrance "for a very special occasion" (he was about to become "a pink rose", which is to say a rose was about to receive his name). The funny thing throughout the episode is that while Poirot was addicted to his new expensive cologne, his associate Cpt. Hastings was very allergic to the same. Despite the latter's natural reaction, it is probably a very good stuff:)

Portugal is a beautiful country and one of the things I fancy most are orange trees in bloom or with oranges all year round (or almost...) But I miss almond blossom in this list...The scent of almond trees in bloom in the summer is so entacing. If I ever have an opportunity, I will test it for sure!
