Milk of Flowers Cologne

Milk of Flowers, like Sandalwood and Eucris, is amongst the most distinctive and original of scents I know and by the unmistakeable and venerable Geo. F. Trumper. Milk of Flowers is a contrast of sweet flowers (like heather, lavender and rose) and cloves, which in combination produce an extraordinary spicy floral of absolute uniqueness and is the antithesis of the majority of modern day scents and their clones. Way more spicy to begin with, then floral in the end. The first time I tried it, the clove and spice made a strong impression of glühwein or a Christmas pot puri. As one becomes more acquainted with it, the clove elements dissipate and give way to the floral components. I wear this year-round, though it probably is one I'll choose to use more often in colder months. A long way into the dry down it becomes more sweet and a little more floral. Quite potent on initial application but soon settling to a scent of moderate projection and longevity. It is very English: like Tattersall shirts, Paisley ties, Prince of Wales checks and hound's tooth tweeds. You could imagine this wafting around the washrooms in Westminster Palace, the Long Room at Lords and the more exclusive enclosures at Ascot and Cheltenham. Makes me think of Capt. Arthur Hastings racing through the countryside in his Lagonda; and we know Agatha Christie had Hercule Poirot shopping at Trumpers on several occasions. In summery then: authoritative, fearless and self-assured. You need to give yourself time with this. Milk of Flowers screams of tradition. It resides on the opposite end of the perfume spectrum occupied by designer fragrance. (By comparison, they seem the preserve of the hoi polloi). A really nice cologne with EdT/EdP strength and longevity. A sweeter, lighter but just as potent version of the wonderful clovey Jacomo de Jacomo. I think of it as an all-seasons scent, and it has some resemblance to Dunhill 51.3N but is much superior in its performance A true gentleman's scent. I'm really impressed with the Geo Trumper scents I've smelt so far.

Milk of Flowers seems to me to be quite a rarity, in that I've certainly not experienced any other fragrance close to it. Jerry Can's and Alphairone's reviews below both give an excellent insight into the character of this fragrance, so I doubt there's much else I can add. Some reviews mention a "banana" note and if I smell the atomizer I do experience that, but it's mild, milky and rather pleasing to my nose. Once the spray hits my skin, however, that note disappears and in comes the cloves with quite a blast. Interestingly, cloves is one note that I would typically avoid, because the smell tends to remind me of childhood toothache home remedies. Many a child in Britain grew up in the 1960s and earlier knowing the smell of clove oil. Who needs dentists? It is surprising then that I do not mind the clove note in this instance, perhaps because it is quickly mellowed by that sweet, floral milkiness I mentioned earlier. I do detect bay rum, but pleasingly for me it is a mere hint. Within an hour, I can still smell cloves close to my skin, but futher away it is the sweet florals that remain. And as Alphairone mentioned, carnation is evident. My only reservation about this fragrance is its versatility. I'd not be inclined to wear it in the spring or summer, because it's not fresh enough for me, so that leaves the cooler months. And although I like the way it smells on me, I'm not sure it would be that pleasing to others (not that that matters greatly), so I'd probably not wear it for an evening out. I will add that I'm a fan of Geo. F Trumper as a firm and I think it should be commended for producing fragrances that remain true to its heritage and that are a little different to much that is on offer today. I love this scent. I have been trying a few bay rum fragrances of late. This is not bay rum, but it does have a much lighter clove note. Bay rums tend have a very distinct clove note. I think of this as "bay rum light" or as a "bay rum floral". I use it when I want a softer clove fragrance.

Hm, wow this is an interesting one! It starts off punching you with a liquor filled chocolate, slowly transforming into maringues and sweet powdery marshmallows bathing in warm milk. The dry down comes fast on this one, i didnt last a mere 10 min in willy wonkas factory before somebody dumped a gallon of black peppers on me. Such a funny kitchen-esque perfume, like a couple of parents in a bottle, where the mother is baking and the father is covering his steak in black pepper and cloves. A wolf in sheeps clothing.

A truly unique offering from Trumper, Milk of Flowers will surely be an acquired taste, especially as it opens with the combination of banana pudding-Juicy Fruit-ylang ylang and camphorous green myrtle. It soon settles green and milky, like milkweed sap, a bouquet of yellow florals, lilac, and carnation that is wrapped in clove buds and a bay rum accord. It is here that the old world gentleman's elegance begins to shine. Closer to the skin, you have the ashier, starker facets of clove, but the sillage as you move a few inches away is a gorgeous floral bay rum with sweeter elements that persists through the dry down. It also wears with potency that exceeds the expectations of its eau de cologne designation.

As the name may suggest, the dominant note is lactose. Very sweet. I'm not getting any cloves, however hard I try to pick them up. I'm testing this on a strip; maybe that's why. This scent definitely doesn't strike me as masculine but it's nice and pleasant. I find a lot of "masculine" woody / smoky scents headache-inducing, so I'd prefer something like this. But this one is perhaps a bit too sweet so it may be cloying if I actually wore it. As iconoclast says, this is definitely beyond EdC sillage- and longevity-wise.
