Acqua di Gio

Where do I even begin? Every so often, you come across a fragrance that quietly follows you through life. Trends come and go, tastes evolve, countless new releases promise to reinvent masculinity, yet somehow one or two always finds their way back onto the shelf. Acqua di Giò has been that fragrance for me, alongside its zingier, slightly more mature brother, L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme by Issey Miyake. I first wore it as a teenager, at a time when my collection also included Polo Sport, Tommy, Hugo, and Cool Water. Fast forward more than twenty years, and I've revisited almost all of those fragrances. Some exceeded my memories. Some fell short (see my other reviews). But Acqua di Giò never wavered. What strikes me most is its balance. It's fresh without feeling cold, sweet without becoming cloying, masculine without trying to dominate the room, and elegant without becoming formal. It feels completely at home whether you're wearing a t-shirt on a warm afternoon, or an open-collared shirt heading out for dinner. The development is one of my favourite things about it. Every few hours it seems to reveal another side of itself. Some fragrances simply become quieter as the day goes on, whereas Acqua di Giò evolves. The opening is vibrant and uplifting, the heart becomes smoother and more rounded, and the dry-down settles into something effortlessly confident. It keeps rewarding you for wearing it. Somehow, it just completes my whole attire for the day. Performance has never been an issue for me. It projects beautifully without overwhelming anyone, lasts comfortably throughout the day, and has always managed to attract compliments, which, as I've said elsewhere, matter less to me than enjoying the fragrance myself. That said, it certainly doesn't hurt when you're being bombarded with "you smell incredible" several times a day. More than once I've had women tell me how good it smells, and I completely understand why. It has an inviting quality that never feels forced or overdone. What impresses me even more is how timeless it feels. I've revisited plenty of fragrances from the late '90s and early 2000s, and some of them now feel like snapshots of a particular era - they've aged badly. Acqua di Giò somehow escaped that fate. Even today it feels contemporary, relevant, and completely comfortable in its own skin. Perhaps that's why I've never grown tired of it. There are fragrances I enjoy. There are fragrances I admire. Then there's Acqua di Giò, a fragrance that simply makes me feel like the best version of myself. It gives me confidence without arrogance, presence without shouting, and a quiet sense that everything is exactly as it should be. If my entire collection disappeared tomorrow and I had to start again with just one bottle, I wouldn't spend very long deciding. I'd reach for Acqua di Giò. Downsides? There's probably only one; it's undoubtedly common due to its popularity, but who cares? I know I don't.

Hello fragrance fam, on today's reformulation guide we'll be covering the legendary aquatic scent known as Acqua Di Gio EDT for men! Acqua Di Gio is famously known as one of the first scents to utilize it's use of aroma chemicals to simulate the feeling of being by the beach with a salty sea shore nearby. To keep things simple we're going to sum up ADG's reformulations into four main categories. * USA, visit our web store VintageDecants If you would like to sample this fragrance in it's vintage formulation, along with hundreds of other discontinued and rare fragrances to choose from. 1. Pre-2006: The Cosmair batches. The first versions of ADG were calone heavy. It's was a very salty scent in its earliest formulations. On these bottles the entire font on the bottle was a silver/grey color and will have "pour homme" typed on the front. 2. 2000-2019: (Ran alongside Cosmair versions) The rest of these batches are produced by Luxury products, with the main lettering changed to a black color and "Pour Homme" still typed on the lower part of the front of the bottle. During this era the salty notes were reduced and added florals and citrus notes were added. This is the most commonly known and enjoyed version. I would recommend batches that were produced before 2015 that will have a 6 or 5 digit batch code. 3. 2019-2024: Theirs two different bottle styles in this time line. 2019-22 will have the words "Pour Homme" removed from the front of the bottle, and it will be blank. 2022-2024 it will have "Eau de toilette " typed on the bottom front of the bottle. I've read both of these iterations were not as favorable as previous versions. 4. Post-2024: The front of the bottle will have still have "eau de toilette" typed on the front. Except the bottle style will now be a frosted glass type of appearance. The good news is, in 2023-25 many brands have reformulated their pre-existing formulas, further adapting to the use of modern synthetic ingredients. A majority of feedback I've read after these reworks has been mostly positive. Cheers to the future! Hope this helps and enjoy the journey.

Nothing loud. Nothing trying too hard. Just easy, effortless freshness with a quiet confidence. Acqua di Gio doesn’t shout; it doesnt need to. It reminds. It reminds you that simple moments can be the most beautiful, and that sometimes the best scents are the ones that feel like recalling so many vivid memories; including the ones you haven’t lived yet. It lingers the way good memories do. Softly at first, then flooding back. The same way you fall in love. Slowly, then all at once.

My absolute favorite of the whole line. It never fails to put a gigantic, goofy-looking smile on my face! It opens up with bright lime and breezy aquatics; it's a very brisk and invigorating scent that's sure to wake you up. The opening citrus blast is also a little bit on the sweeter side of things for a while. Once some of the zingy citrus fades, the bed of pillowy florals combine with the aquatics creating a soft musky aroma, while still having a sheen of squeaky-clean from the remaining citruses which poke their head throughout the entirety of the scent's life when you heat up, even hours later. Dries down to become more muted and calm, but the sharper notes never truly leave the building. The performance is adequate for my needs, as I don't seek out fragrances that possess attention-grabbing sillage that fills a room. I kept getting whiffs throughout the day no matter what, especially because I work outside and heat up constantly. The wafts of cool breeze brushing against my neck during the day kick-start the sillage again and again throughout a whole work-shift. I purchased my bottle back in 2022 and loved it back then, but only recently did I decide to commit to finishing the remaining half-bottle I had left. I've heard that the new re-release of the EDT smells closer to the original, but I haven't tried the new one nor have I tried the original batches. Supposedly my 2022 bottle is of a worse formulation and I still love it immensely. I can't wait to try a newer bottle in the future!

I love this scent. It is very fresh and a bit sweet, but not screechy. Some people compare it with sprite or 7up and I get the idea. There is a hint of salt in there which smells a little bit like egg if you sniff intensely. So drinking a sprite close to the sea while eating scrambled egg, but in the best possible way. 80% sprite, 18% salt and 2% egg. Supposedly the newer batches with the gradient bottle last longer than before. I got about 4 hours before it became a skin-scent (I expected it to last longer). This was with 3 sprays and a batch from January 2026. The mist from the atomizer could be a bit finer. Overall the smell is 10/10, but longevity and the atomizer could be better. Love the bottle though. Edit 9/5/2026: I really love this stuff. The longevity is more like 5-6 hours (don't know why I got 4 the first time). You catch whiffs from it from time to time. Not an in-your-face heavy hitter, but salty citrus in the best way possible. Edit 10/5/2026: I smelled it again against other citrus-frags (Versace pour Homme, Allure Homme Sport Superleggera, Aventus Cologne) and I suddenly recognised a basil/citrus combo in this. That's what makes it smell so edible I suppose.

I know that this '96 release was targeted and marketed toward men, but this is so freaking pretty AND sexy on me as a lady. You know how people with cool undertones notice how most makeup these days pulls warm on them? Well, my skin chemistry does something similar yielding many fragrances to pull more sweet on me than on others or on paper. This is one of them. I get the masculine associations with the marine facets and the woodiness, but the freshness of the citrus and the florals in the heart make it sooo delicious. I strongly agree with previous comments about how this can definitely be unisex. Personally, I prefer the EDT to the EDP. The masculine factor is too strong in the EDP, as well as the marine notes/calone which does cause a headache very quickly for me. The EDT is just right though. I guess if you always want "beast mode" then get the EDP, but imo the EDT is just so much better. It layers well too. I like it a lot with l'eau papier or lilac fragrances like pacífica's French lilac (the new formulation).

I know that here are a lot of ADG bashers. Most of them are niche snobs. ADG is a legend. The reason that this fragrance is so popular is because it smells really good. This fragrance excist 18 years and its a timeless classic. I believe that in the next 20 years people will still use this fragrance.It will never go out of fashion. The biggest disadvantage is that so many people use this fragrance. Its not original to wear it but i love this fragrance. Many women like this fragrance. IMO its better to buy ADG which is pleasant for yourself and for the majority of your environment than a 200 bucks niche fragrance that only will be appreciated by fragheads and niche snobs. Im not a niche basher because i really like some niche fragrances but i hate the snobby attitude from some people against designer fragrances. I compare it with food. I really love lobster but i like pizza as well. Even if i was loaded i will still buy designer fragrances simply because i love them.

I was genuinely shocked by this new batch. The scent smells incredibly similar to how I remember the original formulation smelling right when it first launched years ago. It immediately brought back a flood of great memories. I had started to feel like the entire line was going downhill in recent years, so I am very glad I was wrong about this one. The scent journey itself is that classic, iconic aquatic/citrus blend that we all know and love. Performance-wise, it has average longevity on my skin—nothing groundbreaking, but acceptable for this type of fresh scent. My only minor critique is that I am not a huge fan of the new refillable bottles in general, as I personally believe they don't keep the freshness quite as well over the long term. Overall, a great surprise and a fantastic return to form for a classic.

Used to be my signature scent - but I matured and realized it was still a powerhouse, but one I wasn't keeping up with. I don't live as bold or as romantic as I used to - and my likes have changed around that. Still hit myself with a 10ml every once in a while but overall it's run its course in my rotation. I don't really have anything super negative to say about this fragrance, it's fresh, it's exciting, it's bold; but it's loud. It's practically screaming at you, "LOOK IM STILL HOT, IM STILL WANTED", think Ted Mosby and Barney Stinson becoming one hell of a womanizing babbling whiner that looks great in a suit. Guys, if you're wearing to impress - get something more mature to layer, or just keep it to 2 light sprays.

A timeless reference for fresh fragrances. The opening delivers a clean marine breeze blended with bright citrus, giving an effortless and natural freshness rather than a synthetic one. Bergamot and neroli create that classic “just out of the shower” feel, while subtle jasmine and a touch of spice in the heart add character and depth. The dry down brings soft woods and musk, keeping the scent masculine, airy, and extremely wearable. This is not a loud fragrance and it doesn’t try to be. Projection and longevity are moderate by today’s standards, but that restraint is part of its charm. Perfect for warm weather, office environments, and everyday wear. Simple, elegant, and still relevant decades after its release

This is a timeless classic fragance from the 90's. One of the first blind buys i did as an adult and one of those fragances that I will always have in my collection. It's not as citrusy as people here say, its more of a floral, sweet citrusy and slighty musky scent imo. It could be a unisex fragrance if it wasn't for the musk and patchouli base. Very inoffensive fragance and super crowd pleaser. Perfect for a casual day or office in the summer. You could go heavy on the sprays since sillage is soft and a bit weak. Safe blind buy and a classic that should be in every man collection. SMELL: 8/10 SILLAGE: 6.5/10 LONGEVITY: 4-5 hours SEASON: spring, summer SETTING: casual, office MY SCORE: 7/10

I hadn't worn this in a while, at least two or three years, and felt the urge to make it my sotd when I ordered the EDP on Macy's website. I wore it the next day and OMG, I forgot how much I love this juice. This gets so much unnecessary hate in the fragrance community, so much hate. I've heard people complain about performance, I got 12+ hours that day. People complain that it's dated, nah, it's classic. I enjoyed it enough that here I am, 4 days later, writing a review on fragrantica. Ask yourself if anyone would do that for an underperforming, dated fragrance. It was fire in 96, it's still fire in 22. Extremely blind-buy safe. It's idiotproof magic in a bottle.

The 2024 version has much improved longevity, especially for a freshie, It's at least a 6 hours fragrance now. Fragrantica desperately needs to sort different known reformulations/versions out into separate entries. Because the pre-2024 and the post-2024 versions are quite different and lots of discounters and stores are still selling the old ones. The complaints of super weak performance does not apply to the 2024 edition. Smells fantastic still. Edit: 2024 Acqua di Gio is low-key long lasting. I applied it to my wrist in the store around 4 pm and I'm still getting wafts of it from my arm 8 hours later.

I'm a woman and I first felt this scent on a coworker when he was passing by my desk and after a few times, I had to ask him what it was. I can't possibly put into words how good this smells to me, I've never felt anything like it and it acts as an absolute magnet, I turn my head whenever I smell it... I've now felt it occasionally on other men when they pass me by on the street - if there was ever a real love potion, this one is it. I can't tell the ingredients apart, just the overall scent is intoxicating in the best way. I don't know how previous formulations smelled, but to me, this one is pure sex.

I have been so late to the party, this is so fresh and aquatic. I'm using a sample perfume oil and I think I am going to get a bigger version because I am loving this. I once used a Chinese fake version which only lasted for 10 minutes 😅 but the oil version really has soo much depth and really lasts so well. The lemon and watermelon 🍉 or is it calone, really shine within the first few hours together with the marine accords, then you get some swampy florals and it feels like you're veering towards L'eau Dissey Pour Homme Issey Miyake territory. Funny thing is I don't even think this is dated.

Still the best AdG version. In fact, it’s the only one I like enough to have in my collection although I’m not a fan of the aquatic genre as a whole. I’ve had two bottles from 2025. Still smells great and still performs great on me. I choke people out in the first hour with 5 sprays. Wouldn’t want it any stronger! While many fragrances can be classified simply as “citrus” or “aquatic”, this one really needs at least 4 equally: citrus, floral, fruity, aquatic. Can’t leave one out and accurately describe this, though one can certainly go far beyond.

Been wearing this for YEARS. Even with the most recent reformulation, it's still a timeless classic. My old man still wears it, my late uncle wore the hell out of this, and now I wear it a LOT. This is the definitive aquatic freshie as far as I'm concerned, the scent is just so approachable, one of the most office and blind buy safe options ever. Longevity is meh, 4-6 hours in normal heat, less in high heat and humidity, but just buy cheap and respray! Totally worth it.

I posted a review below 5 years ago where I said I didn't like it because of some pungent aroma in the composition (because of the floral notes). Here I am posting another review after trying and acquiring the latest 2024 formulation. They took out the stinky floral notes, leaned more into the sea breeze and citrus notes, and now it's a scent that I love. Crisp and versatile, I'm gonna use this a lot in high heat, which is most of the year where I live :D

The lime and citrus took a backseat while the aquatic notes stepped ahead. This fragrance is soapy, fresh and slightly powdery, all without smelling like a detergent or cleaning product. It smells like I just washed my face with my favorite soap; it's light, airy, and mass-appealing. Acqua Di Gio lasts 2-3 hours on my skin, but I am more than pleased to reapply it because the scent is so simple and enjoyable.

@BlackPhillip1349 your signature scent is literally Tyrannosaurus Rex by Zoologist, you can’t make this shit up. Believe it or not most people would rather smell good and not like a civet’s asshole, I bet your girlfriend left your nasty smelling ass for a Chad that doesn’t know a thing about cologne and wears his dad’s ADG, leaving you alone with your niche “masterpieces” such as Eau de Barnyard and Le Anus.

A freshie that can't be beaten in terms of smelling so natural. Its dupes and inspired-bys are not even close at replicating the addictive fresh quality of the original. Only Morilllas can. And that's evident on the 2024 version. It's modernized, with added sparking minerality. Performance on it have improved but unfortunately, still not on par with the modern freshies. That's the only deal breaker for me.

I absolutely love this perfume. I am usually for something sweet but when my friend recommended this. Oh my god! it smells like fresh aquatic lemony citrusy. perfect to where this for a date or somewhere formal. people would really appreciate. one thing for sure is that it is weak, i lasts for 3-4 hours and truly goes away after that. I highly recommend this but not for a dark, woody type of fragrance.

Carefree freshness I already placed a review, but it has become too long with all the edits. I absolutely love this stuff. It's simple (but not boring), light, fresh, sweet without being cloying and a bit salty. It is not pretentious, it is not performative, you smell just really nice and fresh when wearing this. It's a classic for a reason, still smells great in 2025. Heavy on the florals going onto that marine salty notes, but still a good compliment getter. I would say though to just get profundo though as it tones down the florals and ups everything else and I think a fresher take. Still good tho. You can find it cheap so if U fancy it get it on a discount not full price.

How can anyone dislike this scent? It's best-selling yes, but can you blame it for that? I got a whisp of this from an older gentleman in a theatre practice couple of weeks ago. Instantly recognizable, but I still loved being taken away in it! I got home and I had to use my Acqua Di Gio bottle in a long time. People still love this. I do, at least.

how could you dislike this? it smells like fragrance, it's basic, it's fresh, that's perfect for an everyday gym type. I got mine for 55, wear it occasionally, and ive never been upset with it. maybe not my everyday fragrance, but if youre a beginner and want to smell like a citrusy italian beach? buy it. one of the safest blind buys possible.

Acqua di Gio may be common, but that does not mean it’s bad. The combination of citrus and marine scents lend itself to a sexy, yet light fragrance profile on men. When worn on feminine skin, it takes on a more light and airy profile. A very easy blind buy if you enjoy the notes posted on Fragrantica, and a daily grab that never disappoints.

I just noticed this was one of the top colognes for "Women's Favorite Men's Fragrance" category in the 2025 Fragnatica 2025 Awards. Still dropping panties 20 years later!! In a world where cologne has become so much more feminine with Iris and Vanilla notes, this one sticks out as masculine and fresh. A true MASTERPIECE

it looks like they put all available notes they could have found in a bottle, for those fragrances release late 90s.. haha but this scent is so good.. so so good I find it even wearable recently, this scent never gets old even a lot of aquatic scents offered by thousands of brands always in my collection for sure

This stuff is great. I overlooked this fragrance since there are so many flankers but this still stands it's ground. Musky, aquatic, with smooth citruses and a tiny hint of spices which makes it pop. There's also something somewhat salty about it. One of the best fresh out the shower fragrances ever.

This is the GOAT for me, I've been wearing this for over 25 years and still get compliments. Such a timeless, fresh scent. I've tried Profondo, Parfum, and Elixr, but for me, they're not as good. 10/10 for me, if I'm ever stuck in what to spray on, this never lets me down :)

Acqua di Gio came out 30 years ago. It has a 4.13 rating out of 13,000 votes. Few classics can hold up to such scrutiny. The reason this does is because it is timeless. Well done, and performance is still very good. This EDT performs just as well as any other Armani EDP

I just love this stuff, I have adg profondo Edp, ADG parfum and ADG EDT and I love all of them from this line, even though this one don’t last more than 2 hours. If you want that ADG dna go for acqua di gio parfum. The best in the line in my opinion.

Amazing in cold weather. 10/10 Masterpiece This scent, combined with a sunny autumn day, gave me a feeling of simple joy in life. It smells like a pleasant life without worries, a heavenly life. Feeling of begin to be carried away by the light

Not sure why some say this is weak. 4 sprays on the clothes is more than enough for me it lasts all day and still projects after 7 hours. You might go nose blind or whatever but people around you will still smell it. ICONIC

My husband used to wear this in the summer when we would go to the Hamptons. It’s very sexy and masculine. I couldn’t keep my hands off him. I still get butterflies when I pass a man in the street wearing this lol

I do love this magic fresh scent but it does not last long so it needs to be layered with something any freshie will do. But how about Versace Man Eau Fraiche.It works and it works very well.

A classic for a reason, this is the quintessential summer fragrance for everyone that lives near the sea/ocean and loves going to the beach. Prefer it to all the flankers.

Great summer fragrance-- fresh, clean, masculine, fuckable, with addictive marine notes. Very safe and versatile, but not as complex as I was expecting given the price.

It's citrusy, fresh like next to a beach, it's seasonal, but best to use it during warmer seasons
