Glorious

I consider this perfume my dirty little secret. I adore its green, softly spicy aroma with its delicate hint of citrus, but I’m embarrassed to admit it or display the bottle. The vintage, old fashioned bottle and the long forgotten fashion designer don’t seem to fit into todays modern fragrances. I acquired a spray sample of Dipytique L’ombre dans L’eau edt and immediately recognized this scent. They are so similar although Dipytique has a bold and beautiful mandarin base note. I’m even more amazed that L’ombre dans L’eau was created in the early 80’s, before Glorious, especially since my sample is new. Two beautiful fragrances worthy of rotation.

I just recently bought this and I honestly don't know what to expect except for the flowers, surprisingly it reminds me so much of Must II by Cartier. It has more vibrant florals than Must II with a less complicated, less refined dry down. It is absolutely beautiful and simply glorious.

Love for a spring and summer scent.

I was a huge fan of Cartier's Must II and sacrificed part of my food budget to buy a bottle when it first came out. After discontinuation I despaired of ever finding something close, since I couldn't/can't afford the ridiculous prices the few remaining bottles command on-line. When my 50ml splash bottle arrived (purchased blind after Miguel Matos' lovely review) at first I thought I'd received a clone of Ralph Lauren's Safari. But 30 minutes in I realize Glorious is missing Safari's marigold note. Suddenly I realized my scent memory was reaching farther back. Cartier's Must II!!!! I ran to the drawer where I keep my nearly empty bottle of Must II, removed the cap and inhaled deeply. YES!! Glorious comes closer than anything I've ever sniffed. Floral but with galbanum's grand bitter green aura. If you loved and remember Cartier's Must II you will sniff and smile with delight to Glorious, her closest kin... at less than $10.00 USD for a 50ml splash bottle. Miguel, thank you!!!

I was thoroughly impressed with how bracingly green and brisk Glorious feels in its opening stages and was frankly surprised to find that it was released in 1988, at least ten years after this style was de rigueur. The galbanum and hyacinth recalls No. 19, Silences, or Scherrer. It advances into a more spicy floral direction in its heart, which reveals that it has tropes of its time period as well, a bit Diva-like, but less strident, with it simmering down to a decent woody, musky base that while feeling just a tad generic, is nothing to scoff at. It's nice. If I didn't have so many delights of this kind, I'd hold on to it.

I recently bought the splash bottle of Glorious, feeling inspired on the back of a successful blind buy of Gloria Vanderbilt (night blooming Jasmine on steroids). On first application it reminded me of Casaque, that super flowery treasure from the ‘70’s but within minutes, the strong resin (galbanum) and powerful green notes, frankincense and soapiness is revealed. I don’t have anything in my 200+ wardrobe that smells remotely like this. It’s uniquely mossy and green, not getting an over abundance of florals, but this is so interesting, I had to rush and report. I am loving this. I will update this on the dry down.

OHHHH! I used to absolutely adore Glorious when I was a little girl! When I had to dress up or had a dance recital, I put on Glorious. I put on Glorious when I went to visit my cousins or out to dinner! It was my 'special occasion' perfume, as a kid. I recently repurchased it, I have not worn it yet, but I detect some reformulation from just sniffing the bottle. I have the 'splash' version, this is the only reason why I haven't worn it yet. I'm thinking of decanting it because I prefer an atomizer. This was a favorite of mine in my youth. Classy and luxurious to my little nose!

I describe this as a very green, lightly spicy chypre floral, very much a product of its time (the late 80s) without being as in-your-face as some of those are. A quieter type of fragrance that can be a nice break from the sweetness of some of the other Vanderbilts. Not very long lasting and nothing especially unique about it, nice but not one that comes to my mind when I think of perfumes that I love to wear. I found it very cheap online so blind bought it, with no regrets, I'm just not thrilled.

I have a vintage mini of this fragrance. The hyacinth is very prominent, and that's a good thing. G. really is a glorious green scent with rich and opulent florals. Performance is good. According to some reviews the scent has been reformulated and it's a shadow of its former self. I was considering purchasing a spray flacon, but now I'm not so sure.

Gloria's green chypre. Very 80s, in a good way. Bright and juicy hyacinth, galbanum, and LOTV lead the way. A musky hint of civet? (Or aged floral indoles perhaps) follows as it dries down. Nice but not unlike others in the genre. The original Vanderbilt with the swan is the standout beauty of her line.

Like it a lot more after decanting my splash into a spray bottle! Quite lovely. I appreciate the oak moss underlying the flowers. Powdery but that's okay by me.

I'm sampling the EDT spray that I just received, and I could cry. All I get is (what I'm guessing is) the galbanum-bitterbitterbitter and more than a little urinous/"dirty" ("Unclean?" Rancid? I don't know how to adequately describe what I'm experiencing, unfortunately) smelling on me. This doesn't soften or sweeten at all. I'm really sad, because I was hoping that this one would work-especially after Miguel's lovely review. I *want* to like (and even perhaps love) chypres, but they generally seem to turn into something horrible on me. *Sigh* Well, if there're any CONUS/Canadian Fragranticans out there wanting this scent, I've got a nearly-full 1 oz. spray for swap! :(

This was a blind buy based on reviews and the fact that it was dirt cheap. I have the splash version of this and in the bottle it smells wonderful! Then I put it on my skin and eww. It just smells absolutely disgusting. I don't know if it is my just my skin chemistry or what but it smells like a litter box with very a very potent pee smell mixed with flowers. I was hoping that the dry down would help but it just stayed the same. It is the first perfume that I have scrubbed off. It was that bad. Even after scrubbing I could still smell it. I will probably keep it for now and just sniff it in the bottle but I am not putting it anywhere near my skin again.

I tested this again today, March 23, 2019. It's still pure "eau de litterbox" on my skin. Dammit! :(

Came today after many years of moving onto a couple other favs...Estee became my 'signature' at the time I was wearing Glorious daily(rain or shine it smelled great on me!)I met the love of my life wearing Glorious & once in a blue moon Amour Amour for those very special occasions!My new mother in Law wore Estee' I complimented her & she graciously handed over her bottle, to bring home and make sure it was for me.I forgot about Glorious & stuck with Estee' & 'knowing'.After Oakmoss ban, I missed the original Estee & knowing.Therefore, started seeking out vintage frags with oakmoss!I felt depressed without daily doses of oakmoss.It's a mood elevator for me!I came across Glorious on Ebay, put an offer in and got it for a fantastic price.A mini perfume...Oh, it was like heaven to smell the flowers, subtle woods, and that hit of oakmoss!Sillage is moderate, which IMO makes a good every day scent for any situation.Something not noticed in my younger years of wearing Glorious is a very slight powder smell to it.Nice & delicate.Just right!Absolutely, Glorious! It gives off the feeling of Estee' super cologne, to me...So happy to have found this again!

Glorious (eau de perfume) just might be my holy grail of floral-chypre fragrances. The opening offers a gorgeous and heady floral blast that softens immediately to reveal wood, galbanum, and oakmoss. I barely detect fruit notes. There is something in this bottle that is unique and endearing, that sets it apart from others. Perhaps oakmoss and galbanum done right, or that it is a floral-chypre, with an emphasis on floral. I cannot say for sure. I'm not that good. But this is a special scent and so beautifully blended that I can see wearing it year-round. I stumbled upon this fragrance. I had all but forgotten that Ms Vanderbilt ever produced fragrances. I blind-bought it based upon the notes and reviews on this site. Buyers remorse set in. Surely this was going to be yet another blind-purchase that was going to disappoint. The bottle arrived on a blistery winter day - a snow day, in fact - and I decided to open her up and give her a try. I have been unable to keep my wrist from my nose. Shame on me for pre-judging. I am officially the newest member of the GV fan club. This perfume is wonderful!

I’m back...round two...applied generously fresh out of shower to wrist pack of knees and behind ears I’ll be honest I can’t stand how it smells when first applied ...splash is harsh and has that very old school drugstore gasoline smell 15 mins in: still some gasoline but the florals are beginning to show themselves Hour and a half in : still a lil gaudy but things are rounding out to sweet fresh bergamot and a lil soft and dry spray deodorant ala 1990 3 hours in : gasoline smell has dissipated ...starting to smell like what I remember heavy on the hyacinth and sandalwood at this point still a lil soft and dry intertwined but it’s beginning to smell...glorious Hour 5: amber hyacinth sandalwood and BIG TIME MUSK in the most glorious way though Do a princess diana wave and that baby will travel ...my 5 year old said “ mommy that’s a nice smell “ I still want the spray though but you gotta give lil miss glorious a chance to do her work...apply hours before you leave to be non offensive and for her to project just right...she’s super feminine and soft

I'm reviewing the EDT spray. I missed this one in '88 so I'm not biased by old memories. Wow, this is a wonderful, vintage, chypre-adjacent, green floral. It comes across as more 70s than 80s. The spices seem like a nod to Revlon's Ciara and waft around the hyacinth note. The oakmoss and bergamot blend to create something like a dirty patchouli. Love that a bit of geranium pops up now and then. I think that today's synthetic oakmoss can be difficult. Some pick it up as a gasoline smell, others get cat urine. I get neither of those. This is a very VINTAGE fragrance. She's green, earthy and spicy. She's not a safe blind buy unless you love vintage florals and chypres. She's not sweet at all. For such an inexpensive fragrance, she's fairly complicated. Definitely not linear though this is often true for vintage fragrances. Even reformulated ones. They tend to have a lot more notes than today's viral trends. I can't stop smelling my wrist when I wear Glorious. And glorious she is. I'm in love.

First impression: very strong and in your face flowers and woods. Gloria Vanderbilt's first perfume Vanderbilt is much more wearable but even so I love this fragrance. The galbanum note is what I was most attracted to. Every fragrance I have owned that contains galbanum smells marvelous. It gives this fragrance an evening elegance. It smells like walking in a backless gown with your hair up in a garden in the moonlight. The galbanum hit my nose right away and it even overwhelms the fruit notes. The green notes are clearly there I would call this a green chypre even. Of the flowers the rose jasmine carnation hyacinth lily of the valley and ylang ylang are all there, welcoming me into their fragrant get-together. The base has a ton of oak moss and cedar. This is an homage to classic chypre florals. I'm loving this perfume but I feel sorry that it didn't get much attention or critical acclaim. It deserves more attention. Buy it! Smells great!

Thank you for your review SmokeySings78!! Now I have to get a hold of some Glorious!! I remember those Avon pins way back in the 70's and 80's. I really loved the way they smelled. My daughter received one from my Avon Lady friend back in the mid 90's, and it was a snowman. My daughter didn't care about it, but I kept it. I take it out every now and then, and smell it for a little nostalgia. I thought it reminded me of Jo Malone's French Lime Blossom and a little bit of Henry Dunay's Sabi. Now that someone thinks that Glorious smells like those Avon pins, I most certainly have to get a bottle. I wore the classic Gloria Vanderbilt perfume as a teenager back in the 80's, but for some reason never tried Glorious. I need to do it soon!! Thanks again for your wonderful review!!
