Cabochard Eau de Toilette 2019

Yesterday I did a side by side comparison with this edition and the older but not vintage one (the long bottle with a bow in the front of the glass and simple black plastic cap). I find that the 2019 version is a bit harsher, stronger in the beginning and more dominant on leather, while the older version is softer and weeker and not as long lasting either. The older one is beautiful and non-offensive, comforting scent, a weeker sister of the older EDP, while the 2019 formula of the edt is rather differnt from the 2019 edp (sharper and more leathery) and strong enough in this edt concentration. It's class, but not dated, and pretty longlasting. Strong and edgy at first but later it becomes a warmer and more wearable scent that lingers beautifully. I love them both. I would choose the older one for a more discreet, softer and more comfortable result or layering under other perfumes, while the 2019 version is better in it's own, I guess, for a somewhat dark, leathery, modernized classic style. There is a difference in the drydown: the older edt is not as longlasting as the newest one, therefore the drydown is soft and beautiful but turns to only a shadow of itself within 2-3 hours, while the 2019 edt has that somewhat synthetic drydown many reformulated classic perfumes have (the lack of real oakmoss and other ingredients that have been banned), not as soft as the drydown of the older one, but at least it lasts way longer. Both versions are very beautiful, really, and they are recognizable as the two versions of the very same scent.

Blind bought this and just received it today. The bottle is very cute. It looks like it would house a Miss Dior type of scent. This scent, however, is far from a girly little thing. This is a chypre that punches you in the face with leather...so much leather. I do not dislike it, but as a chypre lover, I feel conflicted about this one. This feels like the olfactory equivalent of a cocaine fueled party in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Like the ones in the movie Boogie Nights. Lots of gold chains, lipgloss, leather jackets, cigarette smoke, and unprotected sex. The only place I could confidently wear this is to a speakeasy or in Vegas. The longevity is nuclear. No need to get the parfum. I took a shower and it didn’t budge. I’m about to go to sleep and I can still smell it. I’m anticipating my dreams to be extra smutty tonight. Edit - So I tried this several times, and I have to say, the dry down is pretty stunning. The leather takes a back seat (thankfully) and what’s left is an elegant powder with a smoky background. It’s the scent of a wealthy, well dressed woman of yesteryear....and her ashtray 🤣. It’s also very sultry, borderline skanky like Tabu...even though it smells nothing like Tabu. It has that same kind of aura about it. Very polarizing, vintage scent. I really like it. If Jessica Rabbit had a signature scent, I bet it would be this!

The reformulated version from 2019 is a reformulation of a reformulation... I've known this perfume since my childhood years and the original smells different from the later versions. Currently, there are two versions available, the reformulated stuff produced about ten or maybe even four years ago and the latest version (in a new bottle) from last year (2019). The old version is sharper in the drydown and has more vetiver. It's a bit more leathery, but nothing in comparison to the old Cabochard from the 60's. The vintage stands out for itself, it is a true sister of Bandit and a rare gem... (should you come across it, grab it!). As to the 2019 reformulation: I think it's a very pleasant, light, softer version of the last reformulation. The drydown is more synthetic, probably because of the lack of genuine oakmoss and other key ingredients, but I must say that is is one of the rare satisfying reformulations on the market, still true to the basic idea of Cabochard and very wearable, excellent both on men and women. For the price of approx. 20 Euros you get a very recognisable EdT, completely devoid of sweetness or any traces of fruit salad. By the way, if you are a sucker for the vintage Cabochard, try ARAMIS. It is quite similar to the real thing from the past.

While I'm aware there is no way the current formulation is identical to the original, it's still "Cabochard", and it smells better than I remember even. I bought both the EDP and the EDT because I wasn't sure which was better, and when they arrived I noticed something odd: The EDT is 80% alcohol by volume, (or 20% perfume), which is incredibly strong for a EDT, and the EDP is actually 21% perfume (79% alcohol), so there is hardly any real difference in strength. I thought then why is the EDP darker? If you look in the ingredients the EDP contains red coloring that the EDT lacks, which likely makes it look more intense. The EDT is dryer and a bit sharper, more "square" and unfussy. The EDP is rounder, plusher. I feel like the EDT would be more for daytime and the EDP for evening, if that makes any sense. I sense a bit more tobacco in the EDT, which makes me prefer it most. Both are close to Azuree, but less outdoorsy, a little more "conservative" and more severe, in a good way.

First, I love Cabochard. Conceptually, artistically, historically, there are few that compare. That said, I have not found the time of year to wear it that best suits me. Well, last night I finally found it. Spring, evening, 60ish degrees, and only 2 spritzes, because this girl is a purring beast, with soft luxurious fur. The temperate air really brought out the green in this fragrance. And with the modest 2 spritzes, it just enveloped me in its brazen green, ashen and floral leather glory. She maynot be for every day, but is still, with reformulations, an absolute masterpiece.

This was great value (£16.99 for a new bottle!) and it's really well-done, especially for a modern 'recreation'. It's a fairly out-there style of perfume to wear these days, but it's elegant, fierce and earthy all at once, which has to be good. That said, I have a weakness for this kind of perfume and own minis or FBs of l'Eau Scandaleuse, Nudiflorum, Rien and the treasured dregs of a sample vial of No 19 parfum - all kissing cousins - as a result of which I struggle to give Cabotine skin time. Must wear more.

At first you are hit with a pretty synthetic wave of pure florals, which then fades into a nice floral, woody, mossy leathery controlled scent. A very sophisticated scent without as much smokiness as I've seen people claim. The drydown is leather with some supporting rose. For the price an incredible fragrance and a relatively safe blind buy as well. If I had to sum it up in one scene, it would be a clean, waxed leather purse in the middle of a flower field.

I own many vintage bottles in various concentrations and both the 2019 EDT & EDP. This EDT is greener than the EDP, and despite being a reformulation, still Cabochard all the way. I'm as enthusiastic about this version as I am the vintages. Appropriate to attribute this to Bernard Chant, as it honors the original as best as modern ingredients allow. Leather chypre lovers should try both, and for the price, it's not a bad blind buy.

Similar to the other versions. Maybe a bit more gentle. Not as green as the last JM or as dry as Bandit. Not at all like Knowing which is not for me. Closer to magie noire than that. I asked my 5 year old if this smelled good on me or bad on me. She chose good emphatically. Feels sexy. Could be good for layering as well. Into it.

Bernard Chant's first step in his never-ending quest for the perfect chypre. Gorgeous green smoky leather, lighter and brighter than Bandit, a tad more rounded than Aramis (both real gems too), a must try for every cigarette smoker - and for every chypre fanatic.

For comparison's sake, a lighter, more floral version of Aramis. It's very good and I'm glad I bought it...but I have difficulty imaging it would appeal as wearable to most women these days.

Its very unique(old school, not a crowd pleaser). Its similar to the edp version, but its weaker in sillage and longevity. But still its great and I like it.

Too smudgily smooth for a proper man’s wear.

I'm a Bernard Chant man and a certified chypretard. But I will need to submit a follow-up review after more wears. This is the first perfume I've had evolve backwards on me. The top was mildly aldehydic, but plenty of chypre pushed through the mesh of effervescent soapiness. I was reminded, at once, of Paloma Picasso as well as Chant's own classic chypres, Aramis, 900, and Aromatics Elixir. There's clearly a particular DNA to a Chant chypre that's immediately as recognizable as his Walt Disney smile. But this all evaporated and I was left with almost pure aldehydes, smelling like Ivory soap the rest of the day. Not a complaint, as I don't mind smelling clean. But I already have plenty of fougères for that barber shop shaving lather soap smell I need to give this a week, sometime, to figure out if this reverse dry down is particular to me permanently, or if this is just an instance of a similar tempermentality to Montana PDP, which sometimes gives me celery days that last an entire shift at work. Edit: No matter how much I wear this, I want to scrub it. I love Bernard Chant. I want to love this, but I can't. I definitely tried. It must be a personal quirk of my biology, but I swear this evolves on me in reverse, as stated above. The classic Chant chypre DNA is fleeting, as in only lasting minutes on my skin, before it's violently paved-over by a carpet bombing of aldehydic greenness that only builds and builds into a celery Tower of Babel I wish God would smite. I envy anyone on whom this works, because none of its notes are really apparent to me. It's depressing.

I have compared the new edt, 2019 with the last release of Gres Cabochard- the one we can still buy today. And I must tell you, that a lot of things have changed! Thirst, the tobacco is gonne,the vetiver, the sandalwood ( all though listed, theres is dev. no sandalwood in here in the edt), which gives the fragrance a sweet, warm and cosy smel. Just look at the notes of the last version compared to the new edt. There are a lot of notes missing and to be honest, I am dissapointed:-( comparing them side by side, there is just no depht in the new edt and it is harsher and just mehh. I am gonna try the edp version of 2019 and let you know. Shure, it is a bit longer lasting, like a reviewer mentioned, and the leather is more pronounced. If that`s what you want, go for it; but if you aprecciate the complexity of Gres Cabochard, as it use to be and still is in the versions, still on the market, the be warned!

I'm astonished. Perfume is such a subjective experience but this time I get everything people tend to mention with this fragrance. Never had anything like it! I was hoping for earthy and I get that in abundance. It makes me feel submerged in the forest floor. It makes me think of someone putting out a cigarette against tree bark. It makes me think of someone resurrected... at the opening, there is nothing human to it. As such, it feels odd, unlively and harsh applied on warm skin. Medicinal, perhaps alchemical. Green, heavy, dry, dark, sharp, bitter, herbal, vegetal, enveloping (but in a disquieting way). Necromantic is what I'd call it. Edit: Does indeed dry into a wonderful, wearable leather with a floral sweetness. I'm puzzled.

I blind bought this on my journey to find cheaper unisex perfumes and let's say, this is a nice scent for someone who wants to smell like a chain smoker who drenched themselves in cheap body spray. This is - what for me - this fragrance smells like. I looked at the notes before purchasing and was like hey this has all the flowers I love and I doubt the leather can be that bad. Sadly the leather is so overwhelming that it ruins the whole fragrance for me. Leather mixed with aldehydes is giving brushing your teeth with cigarettes. If you love strong leather and cigarettes, go for it. Sadly, this isn't for me.

How in love I was with the idea of this one. I bought it years ago, blindly, enamored by the bottle. It was insulting to smell. It had an unnatural quality to it, like dishes left in the sink for days in polished perfume form. Agressive, masculine in a toxic, musky and overwhelming reading. I could have imagined the alcheid elements blended with softer, less contradictory elements forming something interesting and complex, but it was a far cry from it on my skin. Insult to injury, I smelled something exactly like this on a man I was seeing at the time, which too was a mistake.

Dry sharp full of leather and impossibly strong. Made me assured I dislike leather in perfumes.

To me, this smells like cigarettes. I almost died.

Creamy, even balmy. If you could say this for a leather fragrance, this would be it. I have the previous version and also Bandit, and this is better than both. Don't get me wrong, when Bandit was revived some 10 years ago, there was nothing like it in the perfume landscape. Aramis would be more connected to the 80's powerhouse masculines, and Cabochard back then would be a simpler drugstore version of it. But part of Bandit's charm has always been its historical importance: it's still amazing that it was released in 1944, the post-WWII years and so on. Both Bandit and Cabochard have their historical aura, their context, well known to the aficionados: a true conversation piece, including the bold French names, the rebellious/thrashy nature of Isobutil Quinoline implemented in a supposedly feminine fragrance. And they both had the olfactive marks of times past. The new version does not rely on history. It's a totally contemporary creation, yet at the same time still Cabochard, no doubt. That's what's stunning about it and not the historical context anymore. They removed the retro parts, polished the edges that smelled obsolete. It's not so punk anymore, but it is a real pleasure. Of course, if you think of the mainstream trends, Cabochard might still look hardly outdated. But if you look at the bigger picture, with all those niche brands releasing great retro-influenced complex compositions with just the right few drops of modernity, this fragrance fits quite well the zeitgeist. I'd say, MFK or Papillon or Tom Ford would release this in higher concentration.

Let's start by saying that the 2019 Cabochards, both EDP and EDT are, to my nose, great improvements on the previous versions they have replaced. Less screechy synthetics certainly and the thinness seems to have gone. When put against a real vintage EDT, yes, you can smell the difference that the oakmoss of the former gives - I'm not sure anyone post - IFRA restrictions has solved that perfectly. There again, the old EDT can often come off as quite thin and reedy. I think the magic of vintage is really in the parfum, which I've smelled, but don't own. [Update March 2021 - I own a couple of bottles now - superb stuff, and any lovers of this modern version should treat themselves to a small bottle] Between these new 2019 versions the new EDT leans slightly more to the lean, green top notes and leathery base, and the EDP is perhaps warmer with more patchouli base and rose/floral notes. Smelled against Aramis, also by Bernard Chant, you realise quite how close it is to the EDP; Aramis adding a dose of spices to the brew essentially. I've always treated Cabochard as a great unisex, and I think these new iterations really underline this. Which one I would pick up would depend on the mood of the day, but both smell so far ahead of what currently passes for generic male perfumery that I wouldn't want to be without them. Though I love the EDP, I think the EDT is perhaps a slightly easier everyday wear for a man. But come the evening, then I'd grab the EDP. Of course, now the battle between this and No. 19 is just about to begin...

Stunning. A surprising blind buy. I know it's leather but my nose translates the backbone as 'smoky'. Cabochard is a wonderful replacement for La Fumée, which I passed on before it was discontinued. I totally agree with VenusDoom in their review, below! This fume is complex, masterful. There's the lively heart, the smoke, the interesting sum/trail greater than the parts. Cabochard is a tweedy equestrienne, buttoned up and leather booted, galloping through the cold aired green. Although I don't like L'air du Temps because of its spice edge, the 'stern' aspect of Cabochard brings it to mind, so if you enjoy that and haven't yet smelled Cabochard, give it a try! The UK price is currently unbelievable! I'm not a fan of the currently fashionable chunky bottles, the tall bow one was so elegant, shame. I saw yesterday that it's now been done to Ysatis too, just as I was getting round to loving it and grabbing my first lean angular, glass gem, pah. If this is a reformulation, and I've not smelled the vintage, I think it's a good 'un and this stuff has staying power too!

Get your swamp witch on! This is leather moccasins, stepping on fallen, moss covered trees, wet earth, wood smoke and big pollen filled flowers! There's something quite pure, fresh and clean in the dry down. Like the way one might smell having left a damp forrest and the sun has warmed and dried your skin. I'm in love. Today is the first time I've worn this fragrance, I haven't tried the original, any other reformulations or the edp...honestly, I don't think you have to to appreciate this fricken stunner of a scent. Unisex: yes. But I can't get swamp witch out of my head while wearing this, which works for me :-) Edit: When my husband smelled it on me he said " Mmm, you smell like a spring shower"

I have had a beautiful flacón of this edt for a few years now and although I rarely wear it I think this may be my favorite chypre of all time. When I first bought it, and it is ridiculously affordable, I thought i could catch a whiff of cigs in it.. a badass bitch fragrance for sure. It needs time to be understood really. Sure, it has a lot of mossy green going on- the chypre! It also has some rich floral components as well, though, that round it up nicely. It is so remarkable and sort of dramatic. I could see this being a hit in '59. Statement fragrance for sure. It resonates, never smells cheap or synthetic, could easily be considered unisex. ✨

This edt version is somehow a little less pungent and a tad bit sweeter than the original version, which I did own and ended up getting rid of. Therefore it's more enjoyable and appealing, so I'm keeping this for sure! First spritz is aldehyde with sage, then in comes a little bit of rose and bergamot, but the drydown is mostly oakmoss and leather, a lot of notes are hiding but pop-up unexpectedly. I think it's really-well composed but at the same time a little dated and unisex scent - and yet, to me so appealing..

Nimeni nu la apreciat, iar eu, îl urăsc. Cum poți să denumești parfum, un miros de țigări stinse într-o scrumieră udă. Totul amestecat cu frunze ude și putrezite. Dacă asta înseamnă vintage, mai bine lipsă. Iar dacă simt acest miros la cineva, voi crede că nu sa spălat de un an. Nu merită nici acei 15 dolari. Mai bine iau un deodorant Axe

Extreme oakmoss. Dry, unsweetened, seriously crunchy moss and sage. Internal florals balance it out but are barely perceptible. I can imagine a chain smoking, circa 50's boss bitch wearing this. She takes NO prisoners. Very inexpensive yet still quality juice. Very nice, angular Lalique bottle with signature grosgrain bow. Nice sprayer. Wears on the skin as a fairly linear leathery chypre and After a few hours it is reduced to a light powdery scent. Updated version of a 1950's classic. ✨

Mossy and leathery is what I get, and a lil cigarette smoke. Also dry and not really sweet at all, def unisex. I like it but I have a hard time wearing it, because i feel like it needs a certain kind of attitude and confidence to go with it.

Beautiful chipre, gentle and elegant. This tobacco gives a direct touch of decadence, and I love it. Performanse is good. I order and edp too

Compared to Zara Jardin Leather, this one is more harsh, maybe because of patchouli

It looks like the person using it smoked 150 cigarettes and went out to a party.
