Lignum Idealis

Polished woods... I’ve been wearing it for two weeks now and found it amazing and then... a warm printer vibe appeared. I wasn’t sure, but I’ve come to love it. It truly is “polished woods.” I believe it’s the Dreamwood, a note produced through fermentation. It resembles genuine Mysore sandalwood, but with an intensely polished character. For a moment I thought it might be something synthetic, but it isn’t that at all. Lignum Idealis is crafted using the newest technology available in perfumery. And what I also find genius is the use of Somalian olibanum. This variety has something slightly abrasive, something sandy, which perfectly balances the polished Dreamwood accord. Really beautiful.

Nice release by Gucci. You get wood, wood, and more wood. There's a touch of other things in the beginning but it's 95% wood on my skin and I dig it. Wonderwood is an apt comparison but this one is upstream from the CDG imo. This could be the one and only wood fragrance and potential signature scent for someone that loves this material. I'd got a full bottle of this one. 🪵 🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵 Scent 93/100 Performance 65/100 🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵 P.S. Yes, there's a mysore vibe in the mid which is awesome, but I think my vintage Kilian Sacred Wood handles that particular note with more consistent presence.

The best thing about this is the sandalwood. It actually does smell like Mysore sandalwood, which it can't be since there are so many restrictions around that now since the trees are endangered. Otherwise this would be even more expensive than it is! On first sniff (and I was testing this on my husband) I was mostly getting cedarwood, but within ten minutes a very warm and radiant sandalwood dominates. So in a sense this isn't the most unique idea of a man's classy scent. But, the sandalwood is velvety, deep, calming. It's just like an actual sandalwood powder I had nearly twenty years ago that was the real stuff from Mysore. I get a similar scent profile from Lignium Idealis - it's nutty, almost milky and sweet, but with a slightly tanic, sour edge like tree sap. The texture is velvety, and warm brown comes to mind, colour-wise. There's a musk added of course and that's giving this its radiance and sillage. All the other stuff is there I'm sure, but that's my main impression; radiant, real sandalwood. Persistent with musk, very Gucci in its power and statement, even though sandalwood is gentle. Big like. but not love due to strength of synthetic musk, so I'd say - wear it subtly, one squish in summer, for work or more intimate scenarios, more if you're making an evening statement in winter.

My first Alchemist garden perfume. A soft spoken, spicy, woody, airy scent. I didn't know what to expect but this is good. At the opening it's spicy and peppery. Once it dries down it settles nicely. Overall, it's an enjoyable daily woody fragrance. Nothing ground breaking or exciting. Unisex maybe but I find it masculine leaning.

The opening is similar to the note pyramid; peppery woods, brighten by juniper berry. Very pleasant. The mid and the dry down were different for me. The mid is where I started to get a great sandalwood note instead of olibanum, "sequoia" or "dream wood" (whatever that is). This was also very pleasant and if the remainder of the fragrance was similar to this, it'd be bottle worthy for me. The sandalwood smells truly woody and not "milky" or like a "pickle". The opening, mid to dry down, lasts about 30-45 minutes for me. Smells very smooth and high quality. The dry down and remaining life of the fragrance is where it went left for me. This fragrance is extremely loud (projects across a room) and very long lasting, past 12 hours. The dry down is not what the note pyramid suggests (sandalwood, cedar, vetiver), I do not get any of those notes. The dry down smells like a designer oud or whatever mix of notes are in Louis Vuitton's Ombre Nomades (Amberwoods? Not sure). Nothing against Ombre Nomade, I think it's a good scent, but Ombre Nomade is sold as a dark, smokey, loud, leathery, rose oud type of fragrance. Lignum Idealis (which translates to Ideal Wood), from the note breakdown and reviews I've read, was said to be more of a dry, dusty, woody fragrance and I did not get that after the first 45 mins. A couple similarities on Fragrantica so far (very early, this was released in December 2025 and isn't very well known) are "Chanel Sycomore" and "Gucci Love At Your Darkest". This fragrance couldn't be more different than those two. No similarities whatsoever in smell or performance. With that said, this is a no go for me. It's not a bad fragrance if you like that Ombre Nomade scent profile, but this isn't what I was looking for.

How does this one compares to Timber by Amouage ? I am surprised because both of the releases, within a few months, are in the same monolithic wood approach. The Amouage one seems more aromatic, but did anyone smelled both ?
