Arsene Lupin Dandy

Update: Wow, after trying this again, it may be my favorite in the Parisian collection. Youtube Demi Rawling said, Guerlains are the only "real" fragrances. I understand that statement. I am now getting an amazingly good bitter green note, in accord with the violet. Nothing like that listed? Its like angelica or wormwood... The name Dandy is misleading. It's about the most masculine of the Parisian collection. A beautiful dark floral, with the unlisted violet. Some sites do list Violet as a heart note; and a leather in the basnotes. I do get some leather, but a minor player for me. About the leather: Its in an accord with dark woods; 70% woods and 30% leather. So many will not pick out the leather at first. This does remind me of Dior Fahrenheit, but it's much smoother and warmer, better quality. I never liked violet so much, but this one has won me over. Its unique, and wonderful. I discovered what I love about this. The best parfumers blend contrasting notes or accords. Like Francis Kurkdijian with Lumiere Noire PH, blending light and dark themes. With Dandy, he blends dry and wet. The sage and dryness of the fragrance, blended with a dark violet, reminding us of water in the desert. Wonderful masterpiece here. Guerlain, bring it back!!! It's dark and woody. Then this intense, spicy, Violet floral is incredible and deep. Most masculine with Derby, yet 2nd most floral. Very unique fragrance. Bumping my rating to 10/10. I recently acquired, Voyou, Chamade and Heros, I had Derby, not interested in Frenchy. Wow, they are all great, I love this classic style of Guerlain. These Parisians are well blended, complex, they evolve; great parfumery indeed. This is maybe the most modern of those I have. They all have some overlap or similarities, oakmoss, a bit old manish, or classic vib. This is second most floral after Chamade, but the floral is unique here, I get a great Violet. And I get the bitter orange. Those two notes make Dandy stand out from the others. Also a great spicy cardomom, reminding me of Diptyque Eau Duelle; This is more masculine, but it may be a good alternative. I was looking for a great manly violet fragrance, this will ne my next purchase if and when I can find a bottle at a decent price. That may be hard, as it's been discontinued. A very complex and intriguing perfume. It puzzled me for a long period and experienced difficulty in reading its message. This whole composition is about the game and the game only. I guess Jean-Paul Guerlain wanted this enigmatic. Leather is the most prominent note and it's soft like suede. The opening is an effervescent bitterish citrus blast. Then I get the spices (mainly cardamon) and the violets that give a powdery fresh effect. Frankincense is another star, it is resinous but feels light and clean and adds a sense of mystery in the fragrance. I sense some jasmine too although not listed. In the base lies the beloved gaiac wood with its smouldering smoky nature along with the leather and milky sandalwood. This fragrance is made to intrigue and misguide. Always ahead of its wearer it manipulates him with its elusive manoeuvres. Whenever you think is going one place it goes another, it approaches and then recedes and then comes back again pulling your ear and saying "you can't put your finger on me, do you". I mean the fragrance feels bold but is also light, it has transparency but is also very condensed and balsamic, it is remote but also amiable and it smells classic but at the same time contemporary. It doesn't fit in any particular category and is neither masculine nor feminine. Actually it would make a rather amazingly elegant "fougerish" feminine. The fragrance wears like velvety suede in mountbatten pink, lighlty powdered and strongly infused with frankincense leaving a sort of mysterious, oriental freshness. Mischievous and eccentric as this composition is it may not fully satisfy some, personally I like its game. It is also the last fragrance of Jean-Paul Guerlain and although that alone doesn't add to the scent it certainly says something.

I always wanted this fragrance but was too cheap to actually buy it. I first smelled it in EPCOT Center at the Guerlain Boutique and really enjoyed it (this is around 2010) and now sadly, in 2016 this has been discontinued. Well when I heard the news I made sure to pick up a bottle because this perfume is IMO one of the all time greatest for men. It is not uncommon for a man who is not into perfumes nor fashion to question me about Arsene Lupin remarking on it's masculinity yet softness of the scent. This one works great with my skins chemistry. Initially there is a leather, citrus, (pink?) pepper and patchouli that lasts for about a half hour with a heavy sillage that I pick up. During that half hour it sits a bit closer to the body but MY GOODNESS does it transform. As the fragrance wakes up the frankincense and sandalwood takes the main stage with a long lasting potency. Backed up by cardamom and almost as if leather and fresh tobacco are hiding below the scent as well. It lasts on me about 8 hours and more than 20 hours if you get close enough to where it was sprayed. I also work with many strong non perfume scents around me and this masterpiece stands out like no other. Jean-Paul Guerlain truly outdid himself here on a scent that is truly worth of the house Guerlain and the literary hero it was named for. 10/10

This is the "King among the Thieves", for me really the best so called Men's fragrance on the market nowadays. This is such an overrefined and classic scent..some say it s between Mitsouko and L'heure Bleue. But for my nose it s utterly unique! The Guerlinade reaches out to you the instant you spray it on..but not so in your face like Shalimar or L#heure bleue ..much more subtle and nevertheless great.. The fruity notes of bergamot and bitterorange come next and a beautiful violet bedded in soft suave leather steals your heart right away..If not, wait until the heart notes of pink pepper (never sharp)and soft cardamom play their finesse..and finally (by me after about 20minutes)the base notes take over..a creamy-woody sandalwood of supberb quality and warm sensuous patchouly. Clearly not the deepness or power of L'heure Bleue or the demanding Chypre peach of Misouko, but a sneaky floral woody thief..that captures your nose and hopfefully your heart. You already guess: I m in love with the thief Arsene Lupin! Bravo, Guerlain!! Never stop trying to create another treasure

I'm going to start out by saying God bless Jean Paul Guerlain, this is modern masculine masterpiece level perfumery. Its dry initially but doesn't stay there completely. This counterplay between a citrus and violet help uplift and soften the profile a bit while adding support to that smokey nature. Again the violet though, oh man... it steals the show and gives anything lavender a class on how its really done and to keep its day job as an essential oil! The cardamom and sage add a spicy freshness as well. When it comes to leather I don't really pick up on it in terms of smell but texture at times. In my experience with it its not so much labdanum but olibanum. Like that of raw frankincense and sandalwood before its set ablaze. Very unique and elegant with pretty good projection and longevity. A man's man type of vibe with this one. Its what I'd imagine a James Bond, Bruce Wayne, Denzel in American Gangster and all those "bad mf" on his wallet kind of guys signature fragrance to be... or even more fitting, Pierce Brosnan in Thomas Crown Affair.

I am addicted to this perfume atm. It's basically an elegy to Frankincense/Olibanum. The whole composition is stark and minimal, it has smokiness and woodiness, dryness and earthiness all in one. The opening notes combine to create a smell very akin to that released by the cutting back of rose bushes on a crisp autumn day, with deep, rich, dark greeness accompanied by the smell of the dank earth and the bitterness of plant sap and freshly cut green wood. The dry down is intensely incense based, there's a dry tang throughout and elements gather around the central Olibanum note like smoke or mist in a dark, forested valley. This smells so otherwordly it's positively hallucinogenic. I adore this, it smells sacred and spiritual and yet luxurious and attractive. If you like Terre d'Hermes then you will love this completely. As I do. Ten out of ten on every front, longevity, sillage, etc.

I get a fresh smoky violet, followed by a strong orange-y isobutyl quinoline note (aka old school leather) supported by labdanum and patchouli. No cardamom, or incense to my nose. Just beautiful, and sad that this one is now discontinued. After wearing it on a side by side with Un Air d'Amour by Dorin, I can tell that they are nothing alike, and cannot think of a single valid alternative to that one (lucky who owns a bottle!). Possibly some (very remote) Fahrenheit-ish vibes, due to the violet, but again, that's just a vibe. The pyramid is off, here is the correct one (not sure how the violet note could be omitted, since it is the main player, together with leather): Top Notes: bergamot, bitter orange, pink pepper Heart Notes: violet, cardamom, olibanum Base Notes: patchouli, cistus, leather, sandalwood

This is simply a brilliant execution of a masculine scent. After my first wearing, someone who smells colognes all day long as part of their job greeting people commented, "What is it you're wearing, it's wonderful!" Longevity is a full-day on me, and as if the above comment didn't say enough sillage is enough for people to notice and pay compliments. I happened across this find, and understand it will be a rarity from here out...but oh what a creation this is. This is not an ordinary masculine wood, but there's an "x-factor" to this that puts it just a few steps over the line between greatness and brilliance. This is superb in every respect.

JP Guerlain's last masculine fragrance for the house - the note pyramid here is completely wrong, Andy the Frenchy and others have it correctly - it's a violet leather at its heart, veering from chypre to oriental - there's no oakmoss, patchouli stands in for that in the modern chypre formulation, there's a big dose of labdanum giving it more than a whiff of Shalimar but without the vanilla, and towards the dry down there's certainly something that pushes it more towards an oriental, possibly frankincense and sandalwood - it still stays dryer, though, in a nod to its chypre upbringing.

I saw on another site, there is Violet in the heart, as well as sage. The color of the bottle and juice fit the fragrance. Dark, dry woods and sage, black pepper, with a watery bright violet. This is the only Guerlain in my top 5. The sandalwood is magnificent with touches of cardamom and bitter orange. Then the stand out note the that makes this so unique and the best of the Parisian collection, the Violet! Some get this mixed up with Lupin Voyou, this is Lupin Dandy. Arsene Lupin Voyou from the Parisian collection, has been reformulated and renamed as Guerlain Epices Volees.

A gorgeous modern woody chypre from Guerlain, Dandy opens with fresh citrusy burst of bitter orange and bergamot before moving to a aromatic spicy heart of pink pepper and cardamom. The perfume settles into a lovely aromatic powdery base of olibanum, patchouli and sandalwood. The perfume exudes a classy charm from start to finish, is beautifully blended, unisex (masculine leaning) with moderate to strong sillage projection and sillage and good longevity. A beautiful creation. Enjoy!

I remember testing this one with it's twin brother Voyou which turned out boring and similar to many other designer fragrances. But DANDY is different than regular woody perfumes, it's very unique and worm. The uniqueness of the woodsy and cardamom note in this perfume reminds me of Solo Loewe, not similar at all, but just unique and outstanding, yet soft and unisex. Also, not like any other Guerlain outdated fragrances. This is must try for youth and smart persons. overall: 10/10

Found a sample on line. I liked it a lot. Reminds me a bit of Eau Savauge EDP before the reformulation, although this is a little more balsamic. Too bad this has been discontinued.

Got Arsene Lupin as Valentines present. I really like it. Not powerful or offensive but remarkable and sophisticated. I recommend Arsine Lupin for day time use.

Another masterpiece by Jean-Paul Guerlain. To my amateur nose, I'd classify Arsène Lupin Dandy as a leather/green/spicy modern masculine chypre. I get these notes (in descending order): lots of leather and sandalwood, then patchouli and cardamom, a light dose of bergamot, then incense and musk. For all these heavy notes, this fragrance is transparent and uplifting. It is impressive and formal with nice sillage and good staying power. It's understated and elegant, but energetic and modern. The signature Guerlinade strain reveals itself in the dry down, linking this newer work to Guerlain classics like Habit Rouge, Derby, Chamade, and Héritage. Arsène Lupin Dandy doesn't scream its presence, but it surrounds you with a dignified restraint. Jean-Paul Guerlain is an artist! A magnificent addition to any masculine collection!

I didn't read the notes pyramid before testing it, and here is my take: First I got citrus, and a crisp, raw "bean-sprout"-like (“生豆芽”) opening (pink pepper? and galbanum?). Then before you know it, the perfume discreetly slides into a soft, enveloping leather : it leaning toward indistinguishable spiciness , mingled with an old tea-leaves tone . I read it somewhere, tea leaves absolute can be used to create a leather effect, so perhaps that's why. Sometimes I can also sense a hidden rose , but they're buried deep, only here to provide depth, never manifest itself. I'd say the perfume moving toward a mellow, old woody side , in its own slow pace. So as you can imagine, I'm thoroughly surprised after reading the notes listed here. No leather?! And what's that sandalwood?! and cardamon?! Did I miss the whole party?!!

a very classy scent by the real nose of guerlain no mistake this is a genuine guerlain! a well balanced scent and truly good! although remind me a bit ricci club!

Difficult to get, and once I had it, it was a disappointment. Although it started out very, very nicely, soon an unpleasent undertone emerged. I think that either it doesn't fit with my skin, or perhaps it was even rotten - both things actually do happen. My advice is therefore to check it out carefully before buying, especially when considering the price. **

A soft fragrance, powdery/woody. At first comforting. I'd say it's a first or second cousin to Stetson (which costs far less), except there's a pungent element that enters into things - the bitter orange note, I suppose. It gives it added interest. But by the time seven hours or so have elapsed this scent - on me - is all sour. Pfew. I don't like this stuff!

Being a big fan of balsamic scents I thought I would love this. The problem is it takes too long for the olibanum to appear. 4-5 hours is just to long to uncover the greatness of any scent IMO. As mentioned the opening is very harsh unlike the citrus notes mentioned in the pyramid.

Just got a bottle of this today and I'm blown away I own most of the Guerlain mens fragrances and this is up there with Derby, LIDGE, Vetiver etc IMO As others have said - this manages to be both very complex and multidimensional without being to heavy and yet still have great spillage and duration Pleasant in all the phases - the middle is dominated by violet notes which stay just the right side of masculine but have that feminine edge that makes a mans fragrance interesting and daring The dry down is, as you'd expect from JPG, just masterful Dominated by incense/ labdanum but with balsam, sandalwood and restrained subtle Guerlinade - it's subtle, intoxicating and utterly wonderful An evening out wearing something sharp with someone special? Look no further £150 a bottle - worth every penny - 10/10 JPG - bravo

تست امشب ❤️ ارسن لوپن دندی . حیف که گیر نمیاد . یکی از آخرین ساخته های ژان پل گرلن که روح گرلن و گرلناد توش دمیده شده . ارسن لوپن بطور کلی فضای رزینی یا صمغی داره که آکورد سیتروسی و فضای اسپایسی ملایمش کرده . کندر نت غالب بوی این ادکلنه . لابدانوم حس چرکی بهش داده و صمغ درخت قان ماهییت چرمی ... تقریبا بعد از نیم ساعت این ادکلن فضایی رو شکل میده که عطرهای نیش چند صد دلاریه امروزی سعی در نمایشش دارند . کاملا چرمی ولی از نوع روسی. مثل بوییدن الوار های چوبی که رگه های صمغ توشون هست . این ادکلن رو امروزه دیگه راحت نمیشه پوشید بوی کهنگی و کلاسیک تو بطن عطره . شاید مناسب افراد مناسب و شیک پوش مثل خود ژان پل گرلن باشه . ولی ی عطر خوب همیشه خوبه ‌ . آرسن لوپن دندی هم یکی از اوناست کیفیت عطرهای گرلن اصلا قابل ارزیابی نیست بر هیچکس بلندینگ زیبا و یونیک و کیفیت بالای عطرهاش پوشیده نیست .

My very first review here and on my signature scent, I think very appropriate so! Arsene Lupin is in my opinion one of the best masculine frags on the market. It is heavy yet light, rich and opulent yet very wearable for every season. It is a very nice high end natural smelling scent with great longevity and the silage is just perfect. It does not feel the room and overpower, but rather has a great scent trail that travels very well in the air. I get 10+ hrs with this one, a wonderful violet leather woody very creamy( drydown) fragrance that must be in every collection Jean-Paul really saved the best for last, my favorite Guerlain by far. TRY IT!!!!!!!

I actually like the somewhat harsh opening on this one, but i can't stand the drydown, which is powdery and woody and frankincense-y but lacks a certain punch and as a result ends up sort of cloying (but not sweet! just kind of stiflingly soft). It just feels like it needs something sharper or spicier or...something. The pink pepper and cardamum notes just aren't piercing through enough for me. Underwhelming. If you really love olibanum and sandalwood, it might be worth a try for you! Just not my thing.

Has the same milky/creamy/woody/leathery scent that Bond Brooklyn has to me. It's not bad, and it's not as overpowering as Brooklyn, but there's definitely a relation to me. Guerlain's an awesome company though, I got this as a free sample and just gave it a slight wear on my hand. I'm not sure if I'd wear it fully, and it's not totally FBW to me, but I do have respect for their company and I do detect a level of maturity in their fragrances, this one included.

On the opening I'm getting strong notes of cardamom and citrus with pink peppers and powdery violets. This is surrounded by a soft ever-present sandalwood. The opening is a little overbearing but it soon settles down to a powdery violets and woods accord with a dash of incense. A rough opening that settles down to a very pleasant fragrance.

I rarely wear this, but I found it is particularly suitable when going to the theatre. It is subtle and wears like fine leather gloves. I suppose going to the theatre is the closest many of us will come to "aller dans le monde" as the character it is named after did, and this is perfect for the occasion.

A nice sophisticated clean light woody scent with a powdery finish. Perfect for work, a wedding or Sunday brunch. Only flaw is how light it is. It practically floats away when applied. Too bad.

I have had this fragrance a year and I defintely wear it sparingly since it is now discontinued....Very masculine and good...Smooth and spicy...like the pretty purple color of the juice...!!

That's not the one under the new L'Art et la Matiere colletion. According to Guerlain website Épices Volées is the new name of Arsène Lupin Voyou.

Not impressed, this is a masculine locker room mess not Guerlain's standards at all you could find this for 20 quid in superdrug perfume aisle.
