Eau de Cologne du Coq

Eau de Cologne du Coq, or, Cologne of the Rooster as it translates to, is a stunning creation by the great Aimé Guerlain which came just 5 years after the inimitable Jicky. Whilst the two aren’t directly related, there are subtle similarities, and Aimé certainly leaves a signature imprint on his perfumes. This gentle similarity is by way of the lavender, which is sharp and almost herbal in its presence. However that is where the similarities end, for the scent adopts a delicately soapy note of neroli, which is bright and shimmering like a white ray of light, accompanied by a touch of jasmine. The citrus fruits, namely lemon and bergamot, intermingle in a way which provides a tastefully refreshing rush of citrus rinds. It amuses me when people complain about the longevity of an eau de cologne; would you deem a bicycle faulty because it can’t go 60mph? It is light and short-lived by design, and this scent profile was the norm for most people during the 19th century. I think this scent is stunning, the perfect uplift on a summer’s morning (which I believe is what motivated the odd choice of name). To wear this is to wear a piece of history, a formula which is over 130 years old yet doesn’t feel outdated.

Eau de Cologne du Coq is a fantastic, uplifting, neroli, citrusy, lavender dream of a perfume. It’s one of the most beautiful, bittersweet, delicate neroli perfume that goes into a green, grassy, herbal direction, as opposed to a soapy one. The addition of lavender and jasmine gives the juice a more feminine feel. I am not going to lie, I don’t get any of the base notes, for me it’s the top and heart: neroli, a basket of citruses and the florals. If there’s any patchouli in Eau de Cologne du Coq is absolutely minimally present. I have bought this cologne as a perfumed souvenir during a trip to Cagliari, Italy and it was exactly what I wanted for those sunny days in the Mediterranean coast. It has a weak performance, intimate sillage but I didn’t minded because I worn it mostly during the evenings when going out to eat. After days spent in the sun, Eau de Cologne du Coq was a welcomed pick me up to keep me energised for a couple more hours.

A classic!! Eau du Coq is an old school, classic, fresh, fine and elegant eau de toilette in the style of Eau Sauvage, if you take the fruity notes, but in this case, instead of Dior, his majesty: Guerlain. The entrance is fresh, the citrus fruits are luminous and very well measured, the bergamot floods this entrance with that fineness that characterizes it. The lavender is present next to the neroli putting the floral accent, the drying is light, friendly, balanced and you feel the touch of my beloved oak moss. All this set is transformed into that typical aroma of the classic eau de toilette of those that were made before, many years ago, when I was little, that applies to everyone and brings me memories of joyful, sunny days and skies Blues It is a pleasure and a pleasure to put a few drops of Eau du Coq even if it lasts half an hour. Eau de Cologne du Coq est une eau pour la France. Cette eau très citronnée est très virile, nette et élégante. Elle est probablement la meilleure ou parmi les toutes meilleures eaux. Il y a un seul bémol: la tenue. Comme beaucoup des eaux de Cologne, la tenue est relativement faible. La solution: En mettre davantage et/ou plus fréquemment. En dépit de cela, elle a plus de 120 ans, et, il est aisé de comprendre pourquoi elle est encore commercialisée... À se procurer en 250 ml, ou mieux, en 500 ml pour un usage sans retenue! La meilleure preuve de la distinction de cette eau se traduit par le nombre important de femmes qui la portent.

I think I prefer Guerlain's L'Eau de Cologne Imperiale somewhat better, but that's probably because I'm attracted to the whole product (the bee bottle, the Napoleonic connection, the 1860 historicity of it) rather than by a purely olfactory preference. But this is also quite nice. A classic cologne. Fact is, I'm not a big fan of the cologne genre. They all disappear within an hour or so leaving me to wonder, "What's the point?" My wife says, "Just smear yourself with a cut lemon." But that being said, yes, this is another winner from Guerlain and yes, this is a noble scent.

I love this Eau de cologne du coq, my favourite for a long time. This is the fragrance you can even wear when getting to sleep at night, so refreshing and subtle, a blend of natural herbs and citrus. It but takes skills to develop this as random mixture would be banal while this coq outstands the citrus colognes. I love herbs in du coq, wish it would last longer during the day, so am looking for eau de toilette version of this.

Bloody awesome cologne. Thanks to a good friend, I am trying a swag of citrus fragrances today and this is streets ahead of the rest so far. A beautiful blend of citruses in which nothing is too dominant, they all play nicely together and the sandalwood and jasmine are subtle enough to lend a mild creaminess which makes this at once refreshing and comforting. Straight to the want list.

Spray-on sunshine. As fleeting as that early morning light that bathes the world in gold, but no less beautiful. Nitrus, ceroli, vendelar, sandaloak, woodmoss.... whatever . It's liquid summer. Buy the biggest bottle you can find (ideally at a discounter) and thank me later.

Clean, soapy, neroli forward version of Eau de Cologne Guerlain. Neroli, lavender, and citrus. Very nice. Soft, natural, pleasant, versatile. Relaxing summer strolls in provence. Might consider a bottle. Scent: 8 / Sillage: 6 / Longevity: 6

Very lovely classic cologne that I can *just* distinguish from 4711, though I struggle to name the note that's different - it's somewhere in the drydown. Sadly can't justify a purchase when I'm all set with 4711.

I tried this, and it is one of the very few fragrance that work fantastic with my skin. This is more of a woody aromatic fragrance on my skin, which is what I like.

I dont care what anybody says.. this is AMAZING. Performs as expected. price reflects performance. 10/10 will hit again

Very fresh, yet discreet and deep. Manly and delicate.

I think it's fair to say that the tradition of each Guerlain house perfumer doing an Eau was established by Aime Guerlain following in the footsteps of Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain (Eau de Cologne Imperiale) and solidified by Jacques Guerlain following him with Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. Eau de Coq is an intimate scent from start to finish. Just like Eau de Cologne Imperiale and Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat you can layer it over the classic Guerlains of the twentieth century and it will combine beautifully, adding a little freshness or herbal green touch. That's what it was basically designed for and it succeeds in doing so. The opening gives you lemon, orange, bergamot, oakmoss, sandalwood, lavender and patchouli. Over the next two and a half hours the changes are slow and subtle. The top citrus notes fade away and you have a mix of oakmoss, sandalwood, some lavender, a little jasmine, patchouli, and the tiniest hint of neroli. This is the combination I find before the fade into olfactory obscurity begins and then ends around six hours after application. I find I get about four and a half hours of a perfume I can detect on my arms and then ninety minutes of having to go hunting for the last few remaining scraps. Like all the traditional Guerlain eaux, this is a lovely elegant perfume. It offers you the options of reapplying it, layering it with some great classic perfumes from the oldest House of them all, or you can let it vanish and wear something else later in the day knowing that it won't interfere with your second choice of fragrance. It shares elements of both Eau de Cologne Imperiale and Eau de Guerlain most noticeably. Again, like all the eaux, it's a unisex creation. This suits spring and summer very well as something to wear and enjoy on its own terms, it's much more for warmer weather rather than cold. Either way you cut it, this is for people who appreciate subtlety and gentility and a quiet politeness. It'll still be here in another century.

The only other Guerlain eau de cologne in my collection is Un Dimanche à la Campagne, which is magnificent. I generally don't buy EdCs, simply because I've never much seen the interest in investing in a fragrance that fades so quickly, even if it's divine. I guess I'm just a pragmatist at heart! I made an exception for Un Dimanche not only because it was so transportive, but also because in terms of performance, it fell closer to an EdT than an EdC, on my skin and to my nose, at least. I think it's the subtle white musk that they added. When I found Eau de Cologne du Coq for a very low price, I bought it despite the reports of horrendous longevity—the same reason I'd steered clear of all of Guerlain's older eaux. Sadly, the reports were true. This lasts about ten or fifteen minutes on me as a skin scent, then it's barely perceptible, not even as a skin scent. Nevertheless, it's a lovely little scent, and I don't regret the purchase. The citruses are very well blended, but the bergamot is most prominent. There's some crisp lavender for herbaceousness, and a touch of oakmoss for depth, fleeting though it may be. On the whole, this is an incredibly refreshing classic cologne that never becomes too old-fashioned or acidic. For the time being, it's going to remain attractively poised on my bathroom counter for post-shower spritzing before bed or first thing in the morning. This does make me want to compare it to Guerlain's other eaux, but I wouldn't spend more than $20-$30 on them; it's just not worth it for me.

an interesting eau du cologne. I get a soft orange, with just touch of lemon behind it, some herb - Guerlain lists rosemary, and like a pink bubblegum scent. Guerlain lists lavender, and yeah but it seems mixed into a sort of thicker canyish scent - not just fresh lavender. Maybe its vanilla. Pretty nice though, soft and interesting. It's a pick me up citrus cologne. This one has and herbal scent too though. Guerlain says it's unisex, and I can definately see that. it actually seems to lean a bit feminine, but has masculine aspects as well, so it leans that way. Almost in a Joop kinda way. so to sum up, soft not sharp. Oranges mostly, a light touch of lemon, rosemary, lavender and vanilla. The Guerlain website says it smells like springtime. Not quite to me, but if you have citrus groves where you live, maybe it does. for me springtime smells like cool damp crisp mornings, warm sunny afternoons, grass, dandylions fresh new green leaves and lilacs. --sprayed this again this morning fresh from the shower, interestingly it smells kinda like orange sherbert.

I love Guerlain and added this to my collection in part so I could get my hands on one of their beautiful honeybee bottles. For me, it’s a fresh and fleeting blast of citrus. I don’t pick up much of the middle and base notes described above. Maybe I’ll work on that. In fact, this comes across to me as a more one-dimensional and even shorter-lived 4711. The citrus is much the same, without the floral and other notes found in 4711. It’s also gone more quickly, though I use much more 4711 when I use it given how I use it (large splash bottle to clean up). That said, the Du Coq is clean, pure, and fun. As a result of its fresh and brief lifespan, I use the Du Coq as part of my shower routine—two sprays as soon as I dry off to enjoy for 10 minutes while I groom myself and before I pick out another fragrance to take over. It’s a short-lived indulgence that brings a little of this glorious fragrance house into my daily routine.

From what I understand EdC Du Coq translates to Cologne of the Rooster, with other words an EdC of the morning. Indeed this is exactly that an invigorating morning cologne. What I think of this genre I immediately think of citrus, but if you approach this without preconception you find it is based around lavender more so than the opening citrus. Bergamot to some degree actually resembles a brighter facet of lavender and vice versa (they both contain high amounts of linalool compounds) so you get sparkling citrus lavender explosion in the opening, bergamot and neroli being key imo. Mixed in the bright herbal opening is also a touch of Jicky/MdM which adds some old school Guerlain class. Beautiful, short lived more like a aftershave splash in performance. It does last longer on clothing though. All in all, an elegant lavender bergamot cologne.

I don’t think I am educated enough – refined enough? – to tell much of a difference amongst cologne architectures, more than one or two notes, here and there. Then the fact they last so little also doesn’t help, the sillage is something we can hardly hold on to in such cases, particularly if we keep on spraying... This is the oldest of all Guerlain's cologne waters I think? This is one of the few I tend to feel as less linear and bare, the inclusion of some patchouli and lavender here counts a lot on my nose. Maybe they are of such good quality they simply manage to impose themselves? My 200ml bottle from early 2000 is about to end, and I just cringe wondering where these patchouli and lavender might stand nowadays, haven't tried Eau du Coq on sale in a long long time...

received my samples of eau du coq edc and eau imperial edc today, i am surprised and pleased: they are all very close to classy 4711 edc, which i learned to love thanks to fragrantica. Eau du coq opens with typical cologne bitter top notes: clear, warm and refreshing zesty lime and orange, beautiful bergamot, nothing sticky or sweet, no flowers to my nose, but wait: is there a hint of lavender? not sure, it's gone... elegant and easy to wear, lasts only a few minutes on my wrists, base notes don't develop because of its short longivety. But sillage is pretty strong, when i came back to my office after lunch break my scent was still in there! I love it, but makes me crazy because it lasts so short... i want it to develop on my skin...

While you find a lot of the components of Eau Impériale in this one too, they smell quite different. I think I prefer Imperiale. It smells cleaner to me. Anyway, these colognes last just minutes on me so I can live with Eau du Coq. It’s something I spray to feel fresh and clean after the gym or going to the beach. It vanishes so fast I can put another fragrance on top almost directly. It’s a costly little treat indeed. More of a concept in my case but a few minutes of happiness are worth it.

Lemon/citrus assault (the good kind) and a gentle floral drydown to a sandalwood base. Light, lovely and fleeting, as a summer fragrance should be. I got a crazy great deal on a 100 ml bottle and probably would not re-purchase for the going price - kind of spendy. If I ever finish this off, I'll go back to M pour Monsieur, which is very similar and longer lasting, though a little less refined and gentle - about 1/3 the price for twice as much (my MpM is a 200 ml jug).

Fresh par none. Similar to Eau Imperiale which is a touch more feminine and has a bit more staying power also, on me at least. Le Coq is a classic, pure cologne, can be worn by men and women alike. No staying power but just so fresh and bright, perfect to spritz on a hot day. Guerlain quality not 4711. Think hot summers midday sun, white sails in the wind, sound of seagulls, lunch al fresco on a table overlooking the sea.

This fragrance reminds me of 4711. It's nice enough, but very poor longevity and projection. It seems like after I apply the fragrance that it's gone in several minutes. I like it's citrusy and floral attributes. It's a refreshing fragrance to wear in the Spring and Summer. "Imperial" which is by the same design house doesn't smell the same as this one.

mandarine citrus and herbs. becomes a bit of an orange sherbert, maybe it's the lavender giving the effect. Smells nice. its a true eua du cologne, it lasts a couple of hours till it fades away. Oranges. and herbs.

It's nice orange scent, very aromatic, with good longevity. I think it's unisex but it leans to a masculine side. It's also a bit teasing, good for day and night.

Wow! An orange BOMB. Just like fresh orange peel at first. Then mostly lavender. As with all Guerlain supremely blended. Guerlain rocks.

Glorious juice and beautiful bottle. As for the longevity to price ratio, like the name implies, prepare to bend over...

This is my after shower/bed fragrance

This EdC is pretty fizzy, with a lot of the type of sappy lemon that doesn't stand up and rub its peel in your face. It goes through a minute or so of surprising weakness right at the beginning, maybe while the alcohol initially covers some of the notes, so be prepared for this. Even after this phase, I thought I hadn't sprayed enough, so I did some more and I now realize that the stuff is just inherently weak, even for an EdC. I like the sharp intensity and brightness of what little scent it provides, but I've encountered plenty of stronger EdCs with beautifully appealing scents. In the end, you're left with nothing. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, and conclude that the weakness stems from their using all natural ingredients, but I could just go buy a $5 bottle of 4711 instead. (Already did!)

I'll have to be the voice of dissent here. I have a 3.4 oz bottle of the stuff that's about 80% full, so I've given this fragrance an honest go and I do not like it...a bit. It's a strange thing too, because I really appreciate neroli in fragrances (Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino being my favorite). There is something in this fragrance, however, that smells old (not like an old person, but like the juice itself is old) - this fragrance actually smells like it was made in 1894. I think Luca Turin was right...that dollop of Jicky just ruins this fragrance for me. I want a citrus to be fresh and joyous, but something in this one just holds it down. Anyway, if any of you lovers of Eau du Coq want to add a bottle to your collection I have one you can take off of my hands.

This is a classic "men's scent" which I have taken for a couple of test drives anyway because I like the citrus lavender lift that seemed promising. This is certainly very fresh, zesty and citrusy, with lavender playing a low-key but complimentary role. I have to agree with redbeard that this doesn't last. It just effervesces away so quickly. I can't say I would love to wear a lemon-lavender all the time, but on this particular warm-end-of-summer day, I needed something refreshing before work; however the silage is nil and the longevity is just double-nil on me, so not worth the money. Not a scrubber--just not worth such a fleeting pleasure.

I absolutely do not like this. It opens exactly like Portofino by Dior; lemon candy. To my horror, Coq also has a urinous note. I went looking for Eau de Cologne du Coq, and that is what I found. Apt name for this cologne by the way.

A classic citrus masculine. In the same vein as Armani PH and Eau Sauvage but a less concentrated version. No more than 2 hours of longevity so if you don't mind carrying an atomizer with you then that solves that issue.

Old fashioned luxury... This is one fragrance that I appreciate very much. A classic by Aimé Guerlain , the man who created Jicky , a milestone fragrance in the history of perfumery. Many have remarked (including Luca Turin) that Eau de Cologne du Coq is an Eau de Cologne with Jicky mixed in. I don't quite see it as that. Because to me Jicky is famous for the introduction of vanilla into Guerlain perfumes, and there is no vanilla here. Instead, to me this one is similar to Guerlain's Eau de Cologne Imperiale with it's classic "Eau de Cologne" formula of herbs and citrus. The only real difference here is the prominent lavender and musk combination, which can give it a slight "dirtiness" as perceived by some, but which in my opinion fixes the fragrance and gives it a greater longevity than the former. It's one which I enjoy wearing, and which smells pleasing to others. Overall, I would recommend it over Eau de Cologne Imperiale purely for the reason that it lasts longer on my skin, and I would repurchase this one over the other. It does smell a little "old fashioned" but I have never had a problem with it, and the people around me have also liked it enough for compliments. The name references the national animal and symbol of France, the cock (i.e. rooster). It is very classic and very French, what more would you expect from Guerlain... Arguably the best house in French perfumery? Good stuff!

I own both du Coq and Imperiale by Guerlain; mine are standard modern formulations and come in the same type of oval shaped domed bottle with bees reliefed on the glass. Naturally I decided to test these two old Guerlain refreshing colognes side by side, one on each arm. The similarities are overwhelming, the diffrences between Du Coq and Imperiale are smaller than those between Coke and Pepsi. For a while I got the impression that Du Coq lasted longer but then Imperiale suddenly made a come back on my skin while Du Coq took a walk - so I would say they are roughly equal in longevity as well. Du Coq seems to project better and be more full bodied somehow during drydown - but again - it's just speculation on my part. If you are tired of fragrances and only seek a bit of honest old fashioned refreshment courtesy of long gone epochs then Du Coq (or Imperiale) could be the thing you are looking for. A good cologne is in a way a fragrance that ends your interest in other fragrances as it almost always feels more refreshing and relaxing.

SUMMER LOVIN' HAD ME A BLAST. SUMMER LOVIN' HAPPENED SO FAST. With comparative mention of 4711's fleetingness & indictments of "a butch 4711". I was wondering if this was/is/should be available in a big bath foam & a soap bar; as 4711 is indeed? With the fleetingness & freshness of the juice; capturing the frag in a bath gel &/or soap might greater yield the personal spa-type enjoyment which I fully understand this EDC genre to be. And that's where my appreciation of this frag begins & ends. All the citro-centric wonder-zest, plus the hinted Guerlainade as alphairone notes below, And yes! A whispered smirk/giggle/wink of Jicky-filth......so fleeting...or is that just my willful imagination too? A wonderful, high summer grab-n-spritz. ...... Do that. ...... Enjoy that. Just wish I could bath in it.

Eau du Coq (interesting name) is an AWESOME classic eau. It takes the classic formula (think 4711 or Chanel Eau de Cologne) and gives a more herbal, peppery character, but the citrus and big fat neroli are still right there. It dries down to a a nice mossy/woody base that stays close to the skin. I actually really like this Eaux, because it lasts a few hours on me before finally dissipating. Although, it doesn't beat Eau de Guerlain in my book. Luca Turin calls Eau du Coq, "A good cologne with a drop of Jicky in it". I don't smell anything animalic (perhaps a very slight piss note), and I don't smell any lavender or vanilla. Anyway, if you like Eau du Coq, buy a couple bottles and douse yourself in it because that's what they're meant for :)

I love Fleurs de Cedrat - perhaps the ‘cleanest’ fragrance I have ever smelled - but it literally only lasts 10 minutes on me (15 minutes on a good day) Enter du Coq. Lasts all day (subtly) on my skin. Very similar to 4711 but if Luca Turin described du Coq as a “good cologne with a drop of Jicky in it” then 4711 is a “good cologne with a dash of Jicky in it”. Seriously, du Coq is nowhere near as funky as Jicky, so don’t be put off sampling it if you’re not a Jicky fan. Du Coq differs from 4711 in that is more citrus and less floral. So.... get du Coq if you want a cleaner version of 4711 (check), prefer more citrus and less white floral than 4711 (check) and/or you’re in love with the Guerlain bee bottle (check and mate!)

Fresh out of the shower, I spray on Eau de Cologne du Coq and it serves its purpose completely and wholly; an eaux that serves as a sensory enhancement rather than a bold statement. While EdCs such as this are ephemeral by nature, du Coq isn't as fleeting as others might suggest, at least not on my own skin. It is a panoply of bergamot and other citruses ushering in neroli and lavender. Of course the dry down is classic Guerlain, with a smidgen, just a smidgen of that Jicky profanity in the dry down. Don't be alarmed if Jicky is too much for you in that department, here it's subtle and provides just the right sort of "ooh" to the "ahhs." It's great to freshen up with du Coq.

My favorite from the Cologne Collection. I consider this one of my forever colognes. It is a cologne, mind you, so do not set your expectations high when it comes to performance (projection and longevity). But strange enough, whenever I spray this lavishly, after relishing in a temporal, sparkling moment of decadent neroli/citrus and lavender freshness that stays for an hour or so, it tends to leave a rather delicious fresh, clean scent on my skin that literally lingers for hours -- the smell of skin but better (and more cleansed and purified). It's the skin-scent fragrance I've been searching for. A perfect pick me up and antidepressant in a bottle.

Ugh, I love this. It has officially become my "refresher" scent when I'm at home. It smells so good with the neroli with almost a pepper spice behind it (I know that's not in the official notes). It's zingy and happy, and I spray liberally super frequently, which also makes me kind of happy when I'm just at home. Don't spend a good bit of money on this, however if you find it cheap like I did, definitely grab it. After shower scent gold right here.

Although this is marketed as a masculine fragrance it is also an excellent classic eau de cologne for women. Exceptionally clean, crisp and light with intimate sillage and poor longevity. After an hour the faintest hint of scent remains. Perfect as a “refresher” in not weather. Citrus predominates throughout. Much softer than 4711. This is a fragrance which would be agreeable to those who abhor “in your face” scents which make a statement.

How noble scent it is! Aromatic green citrus notes, with chypre sharpness, very comfortable and not so retro at all, for those who loves citrus fragrances.

Agree 1K % that this is an eminently UNISEX fragrance- super refreshing. Hard to believe it was created over a hundred years ago, it is so very TIMELESS.

I will admit that I am not a big fan of floral citrus perfumes for men, but I could live with this one. It would go well with a cold gin and tonic.
