Un Dimanche à La Campagne

This is such a beauty. Underappreciated by Guerlain fans and undermarketed by the company itself, this gem can be kind of hard to find. Indeed, it's one of the few eaux de colognes made by Guerlain, which has built its legacy on opulent refinement. Being an admirer and collector of many of their eaux de parfums and extraits, I was quite skeptical of Un Dimanche à la Campagne when I first heard about it on here. Based on the comments about its lack of longevity, I didn't even search it out in stores. It wasn't until earlier this year that a Guerlain consultant had me try it on. I immediately knew it was something special, not just in itself, but in how it worked with my skin. This was one of the fragrances that felt like it was just "me" in that paradoxical way where it's as though it's both expressing a part of me I've always known was there and revealing something about myself that I hadn't considered before. I was utterly enchanted, and smitten. It's true, there are some similarities to other EdCs, both by Guerlain and other perfumers. The citrus-orange blossom-musk triad resonates with la Cologne du Parfumer and the Eau de Cologne Impériale by Guerlain, as well as with Mugler Cologne and 4711 Original Eau de Cologne. I would argue that Un Dimanche is better executed than all of these and has better staying power. The musk and water notes are much stronger here, relegating the delicately sparkling bergamot to the back seat and suspending the orange blossom in a fluid luminescence. It is less acidic than many other EdCs and therefore less volatile. It certainly won't last as long as a Shalimar, Mitsouko, or Angélique Noire, but it will run laps around a Mugler. Rich yet refreshing, light yet comforting, Un Dimanche could be anybody's go-to warm weather scent, young or old, male or female. Slightly more on the casual side, but there is a class to it that you just can't miss. This is the Cologne du Parfumeur's more stylish, wealthier cousin. The bottle is simple but beautiful. My only complaint is the lid/sprayer situation. The faux-wood lid with gold top is actually quite pretty and goes perfectly with the bottle. However, you can only use it as a splash bottle. The packaging also includes a screw-in sprayer that works well enough, but you can't put the lid back on the bottle with the sprayer attached, which is a shame. Full marks on everything else, though.

I wanted to try Un Dimanche à la Campagne as soon as I learned of its existence - with a name as enticing as that, you don't even need to tell me anything more to peak my interest, but the note list looked straight up my alley as well. And now that I've gotten my hands on a big decant, I'm happy to say the scent is just as lovely as I hoped it would be, and just as evocative as its name. I've been wearing it all week, which is rare for me, and I'm really falling in love. I'm not sure whether it's because we're at that most depressing stage of winter where the holidays seem long ago but spring is even further out of reach, or because lockdown is really starting to get me down, or because it really is that special, but this breath of air of a scent was just what I was craving: it's late spring in a bottle, or a mild day in early summer when everything's still green and fresh, and every time I smell it it makes me smile. It's fresh but soft, very green and uplifting but super well-balanced, just very harmonious. I get fresh-cut grass or new hay, a lovely sparkling bergamot that's not too dominant, and lots of fresh floral herbs (I'd guess chamomile instead of orange blossom, but I can believe there's some of that as well). If this isn't how a Sunday in the country smells, it's definitely how it should smell in a perfect world. Longevity isn't great, but then again it's not so bad for an eau de cologne, and re-applying is such a pleasure that I don't mind doing so a few times a day (and while it isn't cheap, it's not expensive enough to agonize over each extra spray either). And of course, as with all scents as natural as this one, it's totally unisex. I definitely see a full bottle somewhere in my future!

It smells nothing like Hermes Jardin Nile . I own both and love both . Just because they are both green oriented garden type of perfumes doesn’t make them similar. This Guerlain is gorgeous but very ephemeral . Sadly the lasting power is pittyful with a decent silage for a few minutes. Given that it comes in a huge bottle, I guess we shouldn’t complain and just spray and spray and spray some more. It’s extremely relaxing, fresh , natural. There is no hint of anything chemical in this juice. some delicate flowers mixed with garden herb, mainly thyme . The citrus never takes Centre stage as usually in Eau de cologne. In some ways it reminds me of Roses and Elephant from Maria Candida Gentile, but without the barnyard flavor. This is sheer , aromatic , beautiful, delicate and very relaxing. I cannot get enough of it, it’s a masterpiece that I wish it would last longer. Why such a poor concentration for something so beautiful ? In conclusion: if you can justify spending a good chunk for something that doesn’t last long but smell like springtime and innocence than it’s definily worth it. I adore it .

This is probably my favorite scent in the world! It really smells like a sunday in the countryside. Green, sunny, it even smells of straw at the beginning. I wish my life would smell like that everyday! That said, I would not choose it as my own perfume, because it smells too much like a place and not a person. Nothing wrong it it, but I find the beginning to be too masculine, even though I love unisex scents. As Nicole5678 said, give it some time and it develops to be more soft and comfortable, but still keeping its character. By the end I can feel more the wood notes, it gets gentle, delicate, but never sweet. Love it!

Oh dear Lord, I love this one. Thierry Wasser, you are a genius! Absolutely exquisite aromatic, the opening is an uplifting blast of bergamot and orange blossom. I get the references to both Sur le Nil and the classic eaux but this is less sharp than the former and lasts longer than the latter so if I could afford it, I'd be splashing on a bottle of this in a heartbeat for summer. LOVE.

Perfectly evocative of a lazy walk along the shores of the Epte or Seine in Giverny (Normandy) on a Sunday in springtime : here we have a nice translation of a Monet painting into a scent, with all the greens and freshness. Fabuleux... or should I say, impressionistic !

Fresh yet rounded scent. Great for casual wear and outdoors. Lasts much longer than any other of Guerlain's classic eaux scents. A bit pricey but different.

The opening to this one is a little strong, like a pleasant smelling cleaner that's just been overused. But give it a half hour and it mellows into a beautiful springtime cologne, green, fresh, herbal, perfectly balanced and unisex. Soft without being sweet.

On my skin I get Herbal Bergamott - that turn male'ish on my, sorry to say. I have a problem with citrus-notes turning male'ish almost always. Fresh and clean scent, perfect for warmer weather.

All I get is hey. Also I sense a high similarity to 'Un Jardin sur le Nil'

I have smelled it on a friend, maybe 5/6 years ago. I really loved it. How lucky I was, she had the whole bottle with herself in her purse. And was also sweet of her to allow me to spray it on myself. So, I had a beautiful companion, a wonderful dinner and a new fragrance to consider. I am not a fan of greens and citruses, the colognes are not my cup of tea. But what I smelled there was bergamot (and I was surprised by how much I liked it), along with musk. The scent was a very well and soft blend of freshness and a warm embrace of something skin-like and seductive. A beautiful fragrance which disappeared from the market before to be united with me.

Beautiful unisex Neroli musk- just a touch of astringency. I have a 30ml cube of this and while I really like it, it’s not at all worth ebay prices- especially since Herbes Troublantes is nearly identical and perhaps an improvement. 45 minutes in both are projecting well but HT seems to be a bit denser. HT is slightly more orange blossom heavy whereas UDalC is a bit more “green” comes across as Neroli to me. However this is if I really focus and pick apart what’s presenting on my skin- the differences are subtle. If one were looking for this fragrance, I would purchase Herbes Troublantes and save a few coins.
