Preston

Middle aged Georgia cowboy here: Just got in my fragrance sampler (10 samples in just 3 days across the country - impressive) and Preston is the 9th one I'm trying. Impressed with this one. Similar to Tyler below but a bit stronger on the open with a sweet leftover tropical flower scent and some aquatics too. For me 7.5/10. Of those in the sample I've tried so far from fave to least: Palmer (9/10) (piney/woodsy) Primo (8/10) (smoky/leathery) different from the others so far, very manly Jefe (8/10) (orangey then oceanic with clean hot linen) different from the others so far, very beachy JP (7.5/10) (limey/woodsy/classy) Preston (7.5/10) (citrussy/tropical flowery/aquatic) Vince (7/10) (limey/woodsy) Marra (6/10) (limey/woodsy) Tyler (6/10) (citrussy/coconutty/woodsy) Mikul (5/10) basically Jefe without the citrus in the open but weak.

Out of the 10 Guy Fox fragrances i purchased the sample kits for. At first sniff, I knew Preston was one that wouldn't make my purchase list. Not because it's a bad fragrance. In fact, it almost made my top 5. The only reason it's a no go for me, is i thought it smelled very very similar to Nautica Voyage, which I absolutely love and own. It's been a constant in my collection for over 15 years. For me owning both just felt redundant. If you like Preston, I would still recommend Nautica Voyage over it, as you can grab a 100ml for around 20 bucks, hell they even sell an 200ml bottle for $30 vs the current $78 price tag for a 50ml of Preston. Very nice release for Guy Fox, but a pass for me, as there are better, similar, cheaper options.

Very pleasant, very good longevity, be careful of overspray as my wife and I agree that the sillage is potent. I definitely get the apple and ozonic notes before it softens into a bit floral for my tastes. Kind of reminds me a bit of Nautica Voyage. For $68 you could do a lot worse than this soft easygoing scent.

Preston starts out with a strong apple scent but dries down into a generic fruity-floral freshie, with an emphasis on fruity. At this point, it smells pretty synthetic. There's nothing unique here - there are plenty of fresh/fruity/synthetic fragrances out there which lack a strong aquatic component (which can be good if you don't like aquatic fragrances). I got a similar impression to Chrome Aqua and Maritime Journey. The question then becomes, why buy a generic fragrance at this price where there are similar and much cheaper designer scents available from discounters. Preston has one huge advantage - its longevity is much better than similar designer scents I've tested. I still had a mild but noticeable scent bubble out about 2 to 3 feet at the 12 hour mark, which is very good for a freshie. If you like this type of fragrance, I recommend you give Preston a try if you are also looking for better longevity. UPDATE (1/18/2025): I've completed testing all of the Guy Fox fragrances available in their two sample sets. One set is for the "Founder's Reserve" Collection while the other contains all their standard releases. Here's my ranking of all of them, with a few notes: First group, ranked in order of my preference. These are the top Guy Fox fumes in my book - full bottle worthy, with Nightcap being the best: 1. Nightcap 2. Fairway 3. Vince 4. Nelson Second group, no rank or order, just grouped together. Nice scents. I like them, but not enough to buy a FB: Aspen Primo Mikul Jefe Preston Third group, no rank or order, just grouped together. OK, somewhat generic. Mediocre performance for some: Palmer Tyler Marra JP Fourth group. Just plain awful. Was almost a scrubber for me: Riviera

Sampling Guy Fox Preston, a blend with a prominent apple note and some bits of greenness and powderiness. The other main notes are listed as pink pepper and tonka, and I get a little bit of each, but the apple is most prominent. A little sweet, a little spicy, a little fresh; it’s the intersection of a few categories. Additional supporting notes include various florals and woods, fitting as it’s not much of a gourmand despite the apple being so prominent. Perhaps it’s a bit of a multifaceted apple salad. I definitely prefer the other apple-led fragrance in the line, JP, but this one is decent, also. Preston, like the rest of the line, is EDP concentration and is priced at $68 for 50ml, sold through the house website as well as retailers like Ministry of Scent, and it performs decently well. 6 out of 10

My girlfriend smelled this on me and immediately said, "I like that. You should make that your everyday wear and save the fancier ones for a night out." One of the fancier ones includes Santal 33 by the same perfumer, Frank Voelkl. I'm sold. I'll probably order the big bottle of Preston for my starter-set winner. EDIT: I've been testing the others. They sent 7 vials including Tyler, the newest one, but yesterday I went ahead and ordered the full size bottle of Preston. Honestly, 7 is too may scents to wrap my head around and make a decision. They all smell good. None bad. But none jumped out above and beyond the others. I'm going with Preston because Frank Voelkl is the perfumer and I assume there are nuances that will reveal themselves to me once summer rolls around and I wear it in the heat. But I'm really into the heavier stuff right now like Amouage Interlude Man, TF FF, TF Eben Fume, etc., and the Guy Fox scents are much lighter.
