Blazer

Blazer smells clean and green, with a powdery wood finish. It reminds me of Marilyn Miglin's Pheromone, but much more demure. After about 4-5 hours it becomes a skin scent but still detectable. Not complex by any means, however, it is a light, clean, rather conservative fragrance. Where Pheromone is bare shoulders, red lips, and a statement necklace, Blazer is a simple silk blouse, single strand of pearls, and black-rimmed glasses.

You can trace the lineage of this fragrance back to the following FiFi award: Fragrance Foundation Fragrance of the Year 1977 Women’s Prestige Blazer – Anne Klein by Helena Rubinstein These "green aromatics" (as labeled here on Fragrantica) or "chypres" were of another time when ingredients and sensibilities were very different. It's nice to see people are still passionate about them. I agree that the squared-off "current" bottle of Blazer for women that is made in China is a sort of tribute to what the fragrance originally was. I see Blazer is listed as being similar to Marilyn Miglin Pheromone for women on this site. I can see that. I have several bottles of Pheromone for women and Clinique's Aromatics Elixir for the chypre floral experience. These two fragrances seem to be holding on to some semblance of quality while remaining widely available for purchase. By the way, the men's FiFi prestige winner in 1977 was Halston - Halston Fragrances.

This is a curiosity: I have a bottle of Anne Klein's 'Blazer' that looks like it would be from the late '80's or early '90's. On the bottom label it says Helen Rubinstein... so, I might assume that Klein picked up the perfume to distribute on her own label? Opens with aldehyde blast, similar to 'White Linen', and I'm sensing an accord in the chypre-ish base centered around galbanum that reminds me of that used in 'Nude' by Bill Blass (also, along with White Linen, a Sophia Grojsman frag). So... I am speculating that 'Blazer' is a Grojsman creation by way of IFF, that was transferred from Rubenstein to the Klein label in the late '80's. Either way, a clean, reserved, and starched daytime fragrance with a woody-green, chypre base. It's lovely if you enjoy this type of fragrance.

This version came first and the Anne Klein version followed!! They are nothing alike and if you want the latter make sure you buy the vintage with the red label! I have two reviews for the Anne Klein Blazer which is a vintage powerhouse!! I will have to revisit this one but I know it was not as unforgettable as Anne Klein’s!!

According to The Perfume Vault blog, the picture is of a later bottle. The original was rectangular, by Ann Klein, and had a lion head on it. Also, it seems that the earlier AK is the one most sought-after. I should be getting some in the mail soon, so when I do I'll provide a reviewer here.

One of the bottles I have, a rectangular "perfume" splash of 15ml, even has the Anne Klein "lion" logo, but no mention of Anne Klein! The maker noted solely as Helena Rubenstein. The mystery continues...
