The Veil

Sometimes, when I go back to my hometown, I visit the apartment where I lived for almost a decade with my grandma, who’s now in a nursing home. The apartment has been left vacant for years now, due to family circumstances that have nothing to do with a Fragrantica review. The thing is, whenever I enter that place, I feel many things at once. Nostalgia, sure. Melancholy, even. But also the sense that something is lingering there. While I still lived there with my grandma, a few friends of mine would come over and say that the apartment felt off. That it was like someone had been watching them, that some bad energy was hanging over the place. These friends did not know each other, and recounted these supposed hauntings independently. Me, I’ve experienced a handful of weird things back in that apartment, too. Especially the sensation, the slight change in the air behind you, when you expect someone to enter a room. But there is no one there. This is how The Veil smells: a photorealistic depiction of a haunted place. It is not something I would put on for a night out, but it is one of my favorite fragrances ever. Douglas Little and Heretic, in partnership with the Kunstmuseum Basel, nailed this concept to such a degree that it is, to me, an olfactory masterpiece. You sense the old, almost rotten wood, and this strange musk, as if someone has just left. It is very precise imagery of an abstract concept. It is haunting, ghostly, and leaves a lasting impression. Just like every time I open the door to that apartment. If anyone from the Heretic team is reading this, please keep up the outstanding work.

Love the fragrance itself, the veil is an appropriate name. It feels sheer and haunting and I love it. But it is delicate and disappears for me quickly. If it lasted a bit longer I think I’d buy it. Beautiful things of this nature are often very fleeting, and unfortunately it ghosted me a little too quickly for me to want to buy it. (and I’m very forgiving when it comes to longevity; I cringe at any beast-mode demands).

On my skin this smells insanely photorealistic to fresh clothes from the dryer still warm and I’m obsessed. I couldn’t stop smelling my wrists the whole time.

I really love this perfume. The musk and petrichor notes really come through for me on my skin. This scent is really fresh and kinda woodsy.

The Veil reminds me of L'Air de Rien...they both trade heavily in that rare, super intimate "skin-but-better" vibe that feels more like a personal atmosphere than an actual perfume. Neither of them starts out with those loud, bright top notes you usually get; instead, they drop me straight into this quiet, almost ghostly world of translucent musks that mimic actual body heat and the warmth of lived-in skin. Looking closer at the notes, it makes total sense why they hit the exact same chord for me—they share this matching DNA of patchouli, moss, and heavy skin musks. That specific combo creates a distinct, papery texture they both share, sitting somewhere between a warm hug and an old room, grounded by just enough subtle earthiness to keep the scent from completely vanishing. Ultimately, they both capture the exact same moody, nostalgic energy on my skin—like catching a scent on a favorite old jacket or stepping right into a memory, and I really enjoy both for different reasons. Both beautiful, ethereal ghosts indeed...

This is a guilty pleasure fragrance for me because it smells EXACTLY like a local home and garden store. It’s UNCANNY! I will say that I would add some sort of....I guess synthetic? Note to it, almost rubbery. Would I wear it out and about? No. But I like to spray it on my knees and curl up on the couch and think of shopping for seeds for the flower bed!

The opening has a strong chemical smell that feels extremely cold. In the middle, the woody notes start to come out, and it gets slightly better.

The Veil promised petrichor and forest, but on my skin the environmental illusion never materialized. It stayed a metallic musk where I kept waiting for the woods to arrive.

I'll start by pointing out that The Veil was refomulated in 2026 so Im guessing the woody/smokiness that some are looking for is no longer there. The Heretic website says the current version is Orris Butter, Skin-like Musks, and Patchouli. I bought the Ghosts sample set because I adore the soft and spooky concept. The packaging is phenomenal and the booklet explaining each scent is a nice touch. I knew immediately that Doppelganger and The Veil were my top picks and they actially really favor each other. However, when it came to deciding which would get my full bottle purchase I went with Doppelganger. Iris is my favorite scent note so I wanted The Veil to work so bad but its just so so so light. I had to spray it heavily to be able to perceive it beyond the initial spray. I'd run through a full bottle of it within a month! Its a gorgeous skin scent that perfectly balances sweet, musky, and clean. It starts delicate and then disappears. Im assuming others can still smell it but i buy fragrances for me. I need to smell it lol. Its truly the hazy spectre just barely visible on The Other Side coming back to say a quick hello before vanishing again. I really hate not getting a full bottle but the price just isn't worth it. Especially not for only 30ml. But it IS lovely. Update: I decided to purchase a full bottle of The Veil (2026) instead of Doppelganger. There a musky sweetness to this that I love love love. Its subtle but it does persist. I find this to be my ideal type of skin scent and will likely order a backup bottle in case Heretic decides to reformulate it again. This is how I want to smell when I dont want to smell like perfume. This is what I want my man to smell when we're snuggled up close. This is the scent I want to linger just barely after I leave a room. I adore it.

I wish they hadn't merged the new releases with the 2025 versions on fragrantica, especially since the earlier versions have completely different notes to the 2026 releases.
