1926 Turandot Puccini Absolu EdP

Very little attention had been given to HdP's Opera fragrance series, and I would postulate that this is because all of them draw heavily on classical concepts: heavy aldehydes, prim powders, baroque florals. 1926, a tribute to Giacomo Puccini's Turandot, was the standout for me, with its orange blossom glycerin soap translucency, Williams pear ester, and surprising juiciness in its initial stages. All the florals seem as though their fats have been saponified, and the end result is this near vertiginous wave of sudsy, frothy dianthus and jasmine in the heart. It feels as expressionistic as the opera that inspired it: it feels like cries of longing, the beauty of desperation. Nothing is fluffy or sweet, it's always one step away from dissonance. In some regard, it reminds me of that tension and resolve we find not necessarily in perfume greats of the 20s but those of the 80s: chypres like Paloma Picasso or EL Knowing. A rapier-green thrusting into ash-flick perseverance wrapped in dusty leather—this is especially so in the incensed Pyralone dry down. This is one worthy of more attention as its been lost in the torrent of HdP releases over the years.

Turandot 1929 has a bit of a vintage vibe but it’s by no means heavy. A beautiful combination of floral notes (daffodil, carnation, orange blossom and jasmin mix) with incense and a touch of leather. Incense is pretty strong in this one. Overall, it’s very unique and lovely. Like many other Histoires, it’s not blind-buy safe! Try before you buy.

Why do I have to fight with packaging at 0156hours in the morning? Because I am a fragrance addict... in the best sense of the words. This was my 2nd Histoire of the evening/morning that I was smelling. At first I felt annoyed that the fragrance wasn’t oriental, seductive, or modern even. Instead I got an IMMEDIATE blast from the past! I felt like I was sniffing something that gave me a 50 year old familiarity. My grandmother? My great aunt? I just could not get that nostalgic feeling away from me. Still... I was drawn to it. I was drawn to the green, soft, powdered, young yet old modernity (yes I’m aware of the contradiction... let me roll with it 😉). I’m literally inhaling this scent thinking of my grandmother. This is the definition of classy vintage. A little Chanel no5 and Gabrielle mixed together. I like it so far.

Do not like this one on me it smells like something I'm not sure even exists but can only describe s grape scented windex. I would love it if I was picking up on the soapy-ness other reviewers are noting but I'm not. It it screechy and artificial smelling on me which is really sad because I normally like HDP and felt safe blind buying this one.
