Sex Magic

Just received this in the mail the other day. I will start off by saying uniqueness is 10/10. Nothing I've ever put my nose on smells like this. In the beginning I get cedar, Oud, pine tree, and leather. The Oud is fresher like hat of Oud Wood by Tom Ford. There isn't a ton of Oud which I like, just enough. The leather is the main player which stays through the life of the scent. It's a very smooth leather and very well blended. After about 45 minutes the pine tree starts to fade and and the leather, cedar, and sandalwood start to come out. Followed shortly by what I can assume is the Buddha Wood and violet. This is what I get through the remaining life of this fragrance. It slowly starts to fade off but the longevity and projection are still there. This was a blind buy for me and did I ever strike gold. Uniqueness 10/10 Projection 9/10 Longevity 10/10 Smell 10/10 Price is always questionable. For 15ml the price is $120 which is pretty steep compared to what you could get for it. But I will say the quality is there and if you don't mind paying the price for this I think you will be very happy with your purchase. After having a few days with this fragrance I can tell you that I think the price and how much you get is very much a good value for me. Now I understand that $120 is a lot and 15ml won't last everyone a long time but please believe me when I tell you that if you are thinking about checking this house out and you have the cash to spend ... take the plunge, it's well worth it. Give it a year or two and this house is going to blow up.

I was looking through my perfume collection and found a discovery set from House of Matriarch that I obviously bought at some stage, then promptly forgot about. Noice!! This set came with Sex Magic, L’Arrivee, Kazimi and Destrier in the mini spray bottles, plus dabbers of Black No. 1, Albatross, Sex Magic and Devotion plus a 3ml bottle of my favourite, Coco Blanc. Sex Magic is all spiced leather and warm woods, with a hint of sweetness from the amber and violet. I did get a faint sharp, green note too. This reminds me very much of the incense the priest would waft around during Easter Mass. The first hour or two, it was very, very spicy, but that gradually settled down, and then I got a lovely softly spiced powder. I really liked the way this evolved. That said, it probably wasn’t the best day to test drive this one – 30C and disgustingly humid so it felt a tad heavy. Still lovely though, once the initial spice blast had calmed down. I have to give this props for longevity – I got nearly eight hours, and that was on a very hot, sweaty, humid day, which included a swim. I reckon this would be a great winter scent though – it would feel very cosy on a cold, crisp winter’s day, so I’m definitely going to revisit this once it cools down.

Right, so I'm starting with this one from the Achtung range because I knew I'd love it judging by the notes listed on frgrantica...and boy was I not dissappointed! In fact it was the publicity and features on this site that even made me aware of the house of matriarch in the first place. So, Sexmagic...what a cool name for starters any fragrance thats named after half of a RHCP album is alright by me! This fragrance is sexy, smouldering even and you can detect the different wood notes which exists in a kind of creamy oud spectrum. To be honest I'm not familiar with Buddah wood, Ghandi root and damiana...they're obviously great ingredients. What I do know is that this is a deliciously well concieved scent and a great start to my sampler from this collection and this house. It's smokey, dark and strong things I'm not usually mad on but this gets it right by striking a good balance. This will be one I'll be getting a bottle of for certain.

Was kindly sent a gift sample of this with an order of Matriarch’s colossal Blackbird, and may, at this point, be leaning more toward Sexmagic. Starts off intense, dry, resin, leather, oud-ee with the slightest smoke & skank edge, then morphs within the hour into such beauty: old book, faint flower (violet?), ash. It’s open in that layered living way. Maybe ‘clear’ is the word? It is not a ‘clean’ scent. Don’t know if it’s sex exactly, but it makes me delicious, it’s spiritual, and what’s finer than that? How I love love love shapeshifting fumes. & Christi Meshell.

Sex Magic is beautiful woody, somewhat sweet leather scent. Nothing too unique, as it does have some similarity to other leather scents, if I did a blind sniff test I would guess The Land of Warriors by The Vagabond Prince, as it has that sweet, fruity leather smell as well. In any case, it is highly enjoyable and easy to wear, I can see it garnering compliments, do check it out. Surprisingly, it projects and lasts better than any other HoM fragrance I have tried. So in terms of scent, I would recommend it, however there are cheaper alternatives out there.

Its definitely woody throughout. But there's still a certain level of complexity to it that makes the drydown especially delicious and creamy. The Oud adds just enough sweetness to the Sandalwood and Amber to keep you smelling yourself every few minutes. My favorite from this house so far.

This is my second attempt at describing Sex Magic. I reread my old review and realized, after wearing it for many months, I no longer agree with my earlier impressions. For me, it has two big noteworthy distinctions. First, it goes on with a blast of that varnish-like woody leather made famous by Knize Ten. It’s less synthetic smelling then Ten as Sex Magic is backed up with subtle vibrations of natural-smelling exotic woods. As harsh and powerful as this initial blast of shoe polish leather is, it quickly latches on to your senses and becomes addictive. I find myself craving the bite of Sex Magic’s glorious intro when I approach my perfume table each morning. For this reason, I believe leather should be ranked first on the note pyramid above. In my experience it is the dominant and featured note of Sex Magic. Second, SM is a quirky and reliable wood scent. For people who like woody leather scents but shy away from “too sweet” “too dry” or “too butch”, it is definitely worth checking out. As the initial blast of leather slowly softens, SM is a nicely balanced, rich, exotic wood blend with mild sweetness and warmth of background amber (bass) and a crisp green citrus-rind-like piney aspect (treble) of Pacific Northwest pine trees. Something, perhaps violet, brings an incense smoke to the atmosphere and the whole thing feels deep, layered, but easy and uncomplicated. It is everything I would expect to smell from a name like Richwood (xerjoff) or Wonderwood (CDG). 4 out of 5.

This smells woody whole the way through. My father sometimes makes handcrafted fourniture made from redwood. He finishes it with a 100% natural beeswax which also contains a little honey. After it,s finished it smells like this fragrance. Or should i say this fragrance smells like that fourniture.. i also get (first wearing also) a slight cola smell from this. Not pronounced really, just slightly. As it dries down it gets a little sweetnes (the cola sweetness) but so subtle i cannot say this is a sweet scent. It,s rather on the dry side but something in it prevents it to be to dry. It is more on the dark side but it is a pleasant dark. Not to heavy and actually for this genre of scents quite wearable. Basically this smells like a wood log that has been dabbed into something before letting it dry again obtaining the main scent of this fragrance, the WOOD after about 4 hours the scent was gone. After 8 hours i can still smell it on my t-shirt and strangely now i,m getting a green smell, more exactly a root smell. Like the smel of a celeriac or the roots from a turnip, something like that. I think it,s ok but i have smelled this before many times. Although this brand is known for it,s use of natural materials i,ll rather stick to gucci pour homme for my loadfix of woods.

Sweet amber, choco leather... I am really shocked that the voting here is pine tree, cedar, and leather? all i get is sweet choco amber, leather, olibanum, & violet! I do sense some European style oud but more sweet amber domination. I get some sandalwood. The pine, & cedar kind of shows after 10 minutes in but remains the domination is to the sweet amber. It's quite an impressive blend with quite an impressive name that kind of describes what i have sniffed! Beautiful blend indeed.

Quality leather, mixed woods and pine fir, mixed with oud. Greenery in the undertone. Nuanced, well blended, mysterious and fresh. Very cool, multi-faceted scent. A little disappointed with the performance, considering the price.

I think the name is slightly misleading; "Hippie Sex Magic" or "Forest/Green Sex Magic" would've been more suiting since this scent doesn't really relate to sex in an urban/modern sense... Maybe simply name it "Magic" :D

I said it a few years ago and I'll say it again -- Duro woods, soft leather and light resins. It's not my fav HOM, but it IS decent. I got a partial of this bottle just because, even though it was an occasional spritz kinda scent for me, but I can actually see myself wearing this more than I would've thought. The woods come through nicely on this, very nicely, and there is an intriguing wood accord struck -- not foresty, not sawdust, not bleached -- it's something else, and I can't put my finger on it. But that Duro accord is there, too, and it's hard to ignore. Nice, pleasant and worth sampling.

i get a lot of woods and some pine at first, then after about 5 minutes, the sharpness of the woods softens a bit and i get more leather and maaaybe a hint of amber-just something softer and richer to break up the woodiness. i can't really pick out any of the other notes. i think my skin amps up the wood notes in HoM scents because a lot of them smell similar on me. this one is mostly just woodsy notes and while there are other notes in the background, they are much subtler and harder to pick out. skin chemistry, so interesting!

i get mostly 'duro' style leather and some soft, dainty woods. No pine (yet) and a little bit of resin and small, microscopic bits of oud. but, by and large, i'm quite taken by how similar it starts off to duro, however, from reading the other reviews, i have a feeling that my own personal skin chemistry is the cause of that. seriously, not getting ANY pine whatsoever!

First, let me say that Sex Magic is a very nice fragrance...but that's it, a nice fragrance and not what I would classify as being sexy. Sex Magic opens wrapped in a very blanket of warmed-spices, smooth-oud and some pine resins. A forest of cedar wood and smooth leather quick forward, along with lightly mossy and powdery accords. Very smooth (did I say smooth enough?) and comforting but, again, now what I would classify as sex magic. If it were me, I would rename this fragrance to Smooth Comfort or something similar. Performance was good in that it lasted 8-hours on my skin and projection was moderate albeit somewhat on the softer side. Overall, I was disappointed with how this fragrance performed - it should perform a lot better given the price-tag. While there is no doubting that Sex Magic is a nice fragrance (smooth, pleasant and a likable oud and leather perfume)...there is nothing is this one that warrants its sticker-price. A very likable fragrance for the fragrance in the $2 per ml range, but I dislike it strongly since almost $7 per ml is way overpriced IMO. Your mileage and opinion may vary.

My favorite in the House of Matriarch line, this is a somewhat animalic woodsy offering, that evokes the feelings of being in a forest surrounded by trees and animals. The main notes here are a variety of woods (cedar, sandal, oud, pine, gandhi root, buddha wood) with some other exotic elements (damiana, choyas, oakmoss, amber) and a prominent leathery note. I think this should have been called Forest Magic and not Sex Magic, as the animalic element in it only hovers in the background among all the woodsy notes. The perfume is beautifully blended, perfectly unisex, and has a prominent sillage/projection without being overbearing. is it worth of the price being asked for it? Perhaps, no, but it is very unique and luxuriously blended, and you live only once. So splurge on it if you can. Enjoy!

Sexmagic goes on herbal and fierce with a faint bitterness that's akin to leafier, coniferous scents. It's somewhat dirty upfront, even a little sweaty, borrowing the semi-sweet leather note from Blackbird to construct a thick, heavy incense-type experience (of the non-smoky kind). It settles into a pairing of accords that feel a little like cumin over a complex, woody base, but cumin's not listed. Rather, the effect—dirty, but not fecally so—seems to be rendered through an incisive merging of Choya Loban (a difficult, smoky material) with violets. Oud's present, but sits calm, lending the composition a subdued familiarity. Oddly, given the scent's combining of wood notes that usually display creamy, buttery aspects (Mysore, Buddhawood), upfront I detect more of the pine and cedar notes than anything. But once it settles down, you're left with a wood blend that seems to get dirtier as it progresses. The overall composition is thick, but also notably rugged. For me, this is a logical development of Blackbird without serving as a replacement. Both are dense walls of fragrance that sit heavily on the skin; and both invoke faint head-shop atmospherics through the merging of leather, ouds, and resins. But Sexmagic is dirtier (increasingly so) whereas the animalics in Blackbird are a little sweeter and more heady due to the cannabis note. So differences between the two are quite pronounced, but they're scents that clearly grew from a similar frame of mind. As with most of the offerings from this line, the use of natural materials makes for unpredictable wearings. Matriarch fragrances tend to open strong, then go into hiding only to re-emerge in various forms throughout the rest of the day. Sexmagic stays fairly prominent throughout much of the ride, although it does taper off after a few hours to play hide go seek. Ideally this would be well-suited for those who prefer their fragrances to a be a little fuzzier and less disciplined than most, and it's one that I—being drawn to darker, heavier scents—enjoy immensely. If you liked Blackbird, some of the Nasomatto line, or even Amouage (although this isn't nearly as well-behaved or polished as an Amouage despite some connections to Fate Man), this one's definitely worth looking into more.

Im not a fan of this house, every perfume I’ve sampled has been very watered down and weak. This one I actually like very much but again it doesn’t last, and that makes me sad, I wanted more of it than just half an hour. It’s a very nice cedar Amber sweet perfume, I get more sweet cedar than anything else. It’s interesting and it makes me want more but then it’s gone . I’m not asking for 12 hrs here, I’d be happy with just a few hours. This one completely disappeared after about half an hour. It’s a shame. House of matriarch needs to reformulate their fragrances to make them last longer than half an hour. Sadly they all are the same.

This embodies the word Niche..not just someone that decided to open up shop and put some accords in a bottle. Meshell delights us with a beautiful modern fourgere moving us forward in perfumery. So many times I hear..nothing new..already so DONE. Well here is a great example of twisting things from the past into a new beginning. Woods,leather, pine, amber and moss dance together to add a grounded sexyness. Its a base note type driven scent. I look forward to adding a simple floral on top to femme it up. Its well done if you are a wood fan looking for something new. Great on a man.
