Boss Spirit

I don't know where to begin. Bought my first one just like that at Bahrain airport counter in 1992. My 3rd fragrance after English leather and Eternity for men. Was an engg student sniffing fashion mags to figure out stuff! . But man oh man! I've since then earmarked HB Spirits for extremely special occasions where I need to make a unique and classy statement as a gentleman. Its my numero uno even to this day among my Antaeus, Gentleman, gucci por homme, paco rabbane, Van Cleef, Drakkar, farenheit, chopard vetiver, kenneth cole, Jean Paul Gaultiers etc etc. In one sentence: HB Spirit is the epitome of rare sophistication. Men's perfumes don't get any better than this. This is how a sophisticated man should smell like. Its a shame they just discontinued it, and for what? Other than Boss One nothing works out of the Boss stable today. Best of the best. Very good projection. Amazing longevity. Fascinating sexy yet classy and mature aroma. I would stress on the word classy and distinct. What else would you need? Sparkling clear burst as you start. Citrus, lavender & very strong herbs jostle in the opening. Then becomes very warm and sensual. You have to let it settle. An hour later the play is mesmerizing and just exotic on the skin, with a powerful woody chypre, leather, tea, herb, mild sandal wood and tobacco combo that continue to the dry down. Funny they don't mention sandal anywhere! Dense woods, spicy herbs, mild creamy lavender & sandal, and a very smoky and resinous tenure in the middle that clings on. A whiff of woods and deep forests. Very complex, very warm, very appealing and very rich. A classy connoisseur gentleman who oozes power, style and uniqueness . A First among equals. In his best suit. At his very manly and sophisticated best! Nah! this just won't not go with the jeans, tattoo, tee look. Young or old- its proper attire with this juice. Even today, with perfumes within the grasp of all and sundry, I still have fashionistas eating their pride and simply asking about my perfume. Yeah it stands out like the Eiffel tower amid the watery, flowery, paper ink, fruity, peppery waft of gent EDTs of today. I am just glad that I can still dig it out online in this year of 2016 . Just bought my 8th bottle. Using no 5. 3 in stock !!!!

With all respect to the previous writer I think the notes listed above are true to the smell. Having said that, I cannot find any orange, except for the colour. Since the remaining stock of Boss Spirit has turned at least thirty years old, it might just more or less resemble the original smell. For example I own a few bottles of different size, state and age. The one that reminds me most of how I remember it from the 1990's is a seldom opened mini, while a big splash bottle made in West Germany that has been exposed to oxygene and probably light (color is much darker) has a dull smell with short staying power. With that said I would like to, once again, hail this headstrong and one-of-a-kind masterpiece. To me it smells like the radiance of an evening sun, where smart dressed men are dining at a simple streetside restaurant. Strong, fresh herbs and spices like cumin mix with their collar-colognes and pomades. Ties untied and buttons unbuttoned as the heat evaporates from their bodies. Fresh sweat. And it slowly fades out in a delicate leather and musk, as sun goes down and they make their way to a night club. All that remains is the question how such a connoction can appear so mood-lifting and invigoraring, even thirty years later. Maybe the combination of taragon and wormwood? Maybe paired with aldehydes in the opening? I don't know, but there must be something beyond nostalgia that makes this magic.

Boss spirit is the best perfume I have smelt ever, and I'm very sad to be discontinued. After my large searches to find a smiliar fragrance to it, I didn't find any fragrance match it in the smell and quality togather, but I can suggest some fragrances are close to it, in the top of them are the Aramis brown ( the original ) & Azzaro pour homme, Boss bottled intense edp and Boss scent intense they have the same feel of warm spices ( since they are under the same family ) but in a different way (they are spicy and sweet fruity not green like the Spirit ) Spirit is green spicy and bitter, but for me a I felt the spices are familiar and common between them . Quorum and bijan 1988 are close in smell too but they have a little bit cheap quality of smell. Polo green is also close to it with a good quality. Also (Marbert man pure) are little bit close . But of course Boss spirit is the best of them, it's all time scent and works in all tenses ( past , present and future ).. never dated. Hope they bring it back to the production. It deserves 10/10

I have searched for something to replace this long gone cologne with, but havent found anything yet. Warm, spicy, almost sweaty, like the aura surrounding someone who has had a proper vindaloo-meal. A smell of heat, that calms down after a while, to something cosy, as the sun goes down. Maybe sunset comes quicker nowadays, as the bottle has aged and the liquid turned darker. This pre-internet perfume reminds me of the curiosity people ones felt for the world, and how bright the future glowed at the end of the eighties. It also recalls a memory of a bottle that fell from my friends washbasin, and smashed into the bathroom floor. She complained that this smell gave her a headache every time she went to the loo. For me it is a long gone time, carefully preserved in a dark cabinet. But sometimes I go there, open the bottle and let the Spirit out.

I also used this fragrance in the late 80's, along with the excellent fragrances that existed at the time, many of which have been discontinued these days. I can not understand the options taken by some brands/designers to discontinue these fantastic perfumes, when (and just observe the comments and the really positive reviews) today, they would remain true successes. Something this young generation of creators, managers and marketeers should reflect. As for Boss Spirit, words for what? I cry with longing for the 80's and these magnificent olfactory memories.

to moawyia: it does not smell like Boss Number 1. Spirit is lighter and more easily wearable yet still very much a child of its age. I call it 80's sunshine bottled in a fantastic Art Deco flask designed by Peter Schmidt. I could cry, I miss Spirit so much. Its overall vibe of uplifting, bright spiciness remains unmatched 'til this day. If Boss would bring it back like Dior brought back Jules, this would be my signature scent for sure!!!

Boss Spirit is by far the most powerful powerhouse scent from the past, besides Rutan tobacco. I compared it to a few different vintage scents. It has huge silage and stays long on your skin. To describe the smell of Spirit, it's like a mixture of Dior Jules and Lancome balafre. Definitely a serious scent. It just might be too heavy for indoor use. Only for special occasions, when you want to smell stronger than others around you.

You've got 3 types of Artemisia in this: Mugwort, Tarragon & Wormwood. What you get is a VERY bitter, VERY herbal, VERY masculine aromatic, green chypre! Behind the bitterness there is something in here that reminds me of Egoiste Platinum. I reckon it's the lavender-geranium combo. But Egoiste Platinum came out 4 years after Boss Spirit? Hmm, intredasting!

80's sunshine in a bottle! To me its spicy refreshing. Incredibly positive and energizing while manly and special. Great performance in terms of longevity, sillage and projection. So sad that it has disappeared. It has a nostalgic touch to it but I refuse to call it dated. Its a proper, mans frargrance like it should be! Perfect!!!

This is for the true Boss Man, wear it feeling confident and ready to close any deal like a Boss. It’s a very distinguished gentleman’s fragrance and hard to find as has been discontinued for sometime. But definitely an absolute gem of a fragrance from the past.

@CGV @moawyia Actually this fragrance always make me remember Boss Number 1 and vice versa. They are not alike but they do evoke the same nostalgia feelings in me. Boss Number One with no reformulations and Boss Spirit in production would make me happy,

Boss Spirit reminds me of Azzaro Acteur except it's much more richer and spicier. This is a typical late 80's aromatic fougere, very uplifting and smells absolute divine. Totally worth it! It is much stronger than the way it looks by the way :)

Used it back in the mid 90s, oh how i miss this one. Has it all, classy, sporty, fresh, masculine, deep. With a distinct and unique smell. Signature sent worthy for sure.

They need to bring back this one, i have great memories With it and a lot of compliments, never have i ever been more popular with the ladies ;)

One of the very best I have smelled, without hesitation. Uniquely good.

Not a green fougere at all --- it's a leathery chypre in the mold of Puig's Quorum or Giorgio Red for Men. Like Red, Boss Spirit is a potent (yes, it's very strong) and sharp chypre with a similar pimento-berry note. Boss Spirit is the stronger of the two -- smelled side by side, the green and coniferous elements in Red are more prominent, while Boss Spirit has a tangier kick, with a solid patchoui-sandalwood-leather foundation along with a liberal dose of oakmoss. Boss Spirit also has elements of the classic men's chypres (Aramis, Braggi, That Man) in its makeup, but the pungent, peppery tang that it shares with Red set it apart into a more modern era. It's bold, assured and commanding --- not for those wanting to make a subtle statement. As a musical comparison, it's a brassy fanfare announcing the entrance of royalty, then something along the lines of an antiphonal brass choir by Corelli or Gabrieli.

A wide-open-spaces sagebrush and leather scent with a smoky galbanum note. (Sagebrushes are artemesias, which is why artemesia notes evoke sagebrush.) It starts very soapy, but quickly warms up and becomes pleasantly salty. It crackles with flint-and-steel sparks (that's probably the patchouli). Some relative left me a bunch of unwanted samples of this scent during my teens, and I wore it for years without knowing it was meant to be a men's scent. I was so sad to find out it was discontinued. It smells of a warm, sunny day in Big Sky country. It will be much missed.

Overall unique, classy and sophisticated. A true Niche. Pleasant to wear. A great gentlemen fragrance fro grown ups. Performance: 9-12 hours Sillage: Within 6ft noticeable For whom: Gentlemen >40 My background: I only write reviews about scents I have worn already (until the bottle is finished) or are in current use. I'm a Gentlemen - middle aged - predominantly in an executive office environment wearing suits and representing with many official gatherings.

Also interesting, more fizzy than usual. In my opinion very barbershop-like, shaving foam, very successful in that respect. Actually strongly Drakkar-like, with less of the Nobile vibe or anything like that. Maybe Duc de Vervins, maybe Kipling or Smalto... so we’re moving close to Nobile but there are differences. It’s unoriginal, but very well done — a brighter barbershop scent without the heavier base, rather lifting upward, fizzy, just like Drakkar.

Hugo Boss Spirit was my first "real" fragrance and my transition from Brut, Old Spice, Pino Silvestre etc. I've purchased in the 1990. and I remember it like it was yesterday, because I purchased it at the opening event of first perfumery shop in my hometown with all leading world brands... namely, I was born and raised in the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and until that time (end of the 80's) we had to travel abroad, mostly to Italy, to shop all luxury goods, smart clothes, etc... however, I can remember that girls were wild about Boss Spirit... it become a huge competition to Azzaro pour Homme and Kouros which were already long time in game.

Wow! With such nice top notes I iniatially couldn't believe anyone would dislike this fragrance. It's a solid green/aromatic fougere where its green notes remind me of Paco Rabanne pour homme, but It definetily shares a spicy sweet drydown with Aramis. Less pungent, as an updated version. There's also a nice boozy/cold note that is tangled up with the rest of the composition and amplifies it, really nice effect, similar to the one found in Giorgio Red. To sum it up, It's a skin scent and its longevity and projection is weak. maybe that's the reason It wasn't appreciated as It deserved, although It's great while It lasts!

Tried many classic fragrances. Azzaro, kouros, dior, cartier, polo safari and a few more. But nothing, absolutely nothing comes close to this beast. I still have half a bottle left from the 90's and it rarely use it because I fear that I will never get it again. I don't understand why this was discontinued. Nothing from boss comes even remotely close to this.

Really Tonic. Balsamic. yes balmy, warm aromatic. In some way it is fashinating, so alpha male with Cadillac. Is the resume of an Era: the 80s. But in another way remind me a calssic After Shave a cheap italian 80s fragrance... a rich cologne. can't say. notes very well orchestrated. I like. but hundreds similar. Classic no revolution.

Defenetly LOVE THIS COLOGNE IS STRONG AN SOPHISTICATED perfect for winter,,it reminds me of safari sometimes but this cologne will squash safari anytime of the day,its better in everyway this is a mans cologne good with suits an formal wear,,

Salvador by Salvador Dali (1992) is Boss Spirit without the orange note which is the main player here. Overhyped, the dominant orange is too synthetic smelling, nothing special. 6.5/10

i simply love this frag..but too bad its discontinued. can anyone tell me where can i get this in singapore? Ive been searching for it for ages.

When they stoped this fragrance they lost a customer. I have found nothing like it. What a shame !! Now they make cat pee.
