ROSA ATARAXIS IV: Gold Rose - THE ART OF RESTRAINT Every now and then I come across a fragrance that reminds me why first impressions can be so misleading. Gold Rose reminded me of that once again. The first time I wore it, I immediately liked it. The rose felt refined, natural and beautifully balanced, wrapped in a soft sweetness that never became gourmand. Everything smelled elegant and harmonious and I honestly thought I had understood the fragrance within the first 15 minutes. As it turned out, I had only seen the surface As the hours passed, it slowly began changing its language. The rose that had first appeared soft and familiar gradually became greener, drier and somehow quieter. It stopped feeling like the center of the composition and became part of something much larger, woven together with herbs, woods, honey and an aged citrus note that gave the fragrance a completely different personality. Chen Pi completely fascinated me. While I've experienced many beautiful citrus materials over the years, this felt entirely different. It doesn't sparkle or refresh like a typical citrus note. Instead, it brings warmth, a gentle bitterness and the feeling of something beautifully aged, as though time itself had become one of the ingredients. The honey surprised me as well. Rather than adding obvious sweetness, it behaves almost like warm beeswax, smoothing every transition until the entire composition flows as one continuous movement. The Hainan oud revealed itself much later and perhaps that is exactly why it impressed me so much. Had it arrived with force, it would have changed the entire character of the fragrance. Instead, Adill shows remarkable restraint. Many perfumers would have allowed a material as precious as wild Hainan oud to dominate the entire composition simply because they could. Adill does the exact opposite. He lets it support rather than overshadow, adding quiet depth without ever stealing the spotlight from the rose The Nanmu wood follows the same philosophy. Neither material seeks attention, yet together they create the invisible architecture that holds the entire composition together. To me, that's one of the clearest signs of maximum confidence as a perfumer. Then something happened that rarely happens to me anymore. I kept coming back to the back of my hand (that's where I always test fragrances, not on my wrist) throughout the day. Not because I was chasing another hidden note but because I was trying to understand this masterpiece. Every time I thought I had finally grasped its character, it quietly showed me another facet of itself. It felt less like wearing a fragrance and more like having an ongoing conversation with it. The more time we spent together, the less I cared about identifying roses, lotus, oud or honey. They slowly stopped existing as separate materials. They became one atmosphere, one continuous breath where nothing felt louder than it needed to be. I started this review thinking I understood Rosa Ataraxis IV. I finished it realizing I probably don't. And perhaps that's exactly why I already know I'll keep coming back to it.
