Some people spend years searching for a signature fragrance. I was fortunate enough to find mine before I was old enough to appreciate what that even meant. L'Eau d'Issey has followed me through every stage of my adult life. I've worn countless other fragrances, explored new releases, rediscovered old favourites, and occasionally been disappointed by bottles that failed to live up to my memories. Through all of that, this one has remained untouched on its pedestal. If Acqua di Giò is the fragrance I recommend to almost anyone, L'Eau d'Issey is the fragrance that feels most like me. I still remember the first time I smelt it. It didn't smell like anything else on the shelf. While so many men's fragrances chased sweetness, heavy woods, or overpowering spices, L'Eau d'Issey felt like clean air. Crisp, bright, uplifting, and effortlessly masculine. It had confidence without arrogance, sophistication without pretension, and freshness without relying on sugary shortcuts. Even today, I struggle to think of another fragrance that captures that same feeling. What continually amazes me is how alive it feels throughout the day. The opening is unmistakable, bursting with sparkling citrus and freshness before gradually revealing a softer, warmer, more refined character underneath. It never feels static. Hours later, I'll catch a subtle reminder drifting back towards me and be reminded why I fell in love with it all those years ago. Performance has always been outstanding on my skin. It projects exactly as much as I want it to, lasts comfortably throughout the day, and leaves behind a scent trail that's elegant rather than overpowering. I've lost count of the compliments over the years, but they've never been the reason I wear it. I wear it because every time I spray it on, I stand a little taller, chest a little higher, and gaze a little more intensely. What impresses me most is that it has never become dated. So many fragrances from the '90s now feel firmly rooted in that decade. L'Eau d'Issey somehow escaped becoming a period piece. It still smells modern, distinctive, and effortlessly relevant. If somebody told me it had been released this year, I'd probably believe them. Every time I buy a bottle I'm reminded me why I keep coming back. Familiarity hasn't bred boredom. If anything, it's deepened my appreciation. There are fragrances that smell fantastic. There are fragrances that earn compliments. There are fragrances that become classics. L'Eau d'Issey became part of who I am. It's my 'ID'. My signature. My panty-dropper. Some fragrances earn five stars. Others earn a permanent place in your life. For me, L'Eau d'Issey will always be home.

Here’s something I don’t usually do: Write another review for something I’ve already gone over. So I’ve been spending some dangerous time on EBay, and randomly went down the vintage formulation rabbit hole just for giggles. Yeah that was a poor choice on my part... but I found a sealed 2010 bottle of this for cheap and thought “why not?” Let’s get some things clear, while my bottle/box was sealed and unused, it’s still been sixteen years since this bottle was made. It’s a sophomore going into junior year in high school. There’s very likely SOME aging here, that said, for a citrus-driven scent, nothing’s turned or otherwise smells off, so this bottle seems credible for what I’m noticing between the old 2nd formulation (per a Basenotes thread) and the current version. First things first, this stuff is STRONG. The famous yuzu note everyone loves in L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme? Cranked way up in the old version apparently, I can see why people had issue with it back then. But it’s not a case of thinking an older bottle of fragrance is stronger when really it’s aged, no, because the citrus + yuzu lasts all day. Not an exaggeration, I put two sprays on at 10:00am and it’s still here after midnight. On a toasty day, mind you. Aside from the yuzu with spine, the aquatic nature is way more apparent here, whereas the new version is softer with more focus on white florals and nutmeg. The nutmeg is present in the old version as well, but is blended in with a lot more bitter green notes and calone. Way sharper, rather headache inducing if you’re not careful. I said the new one is like, a high resolution take on Eau Sauvage, but my 2010 bottle is a completely different affair from Eau Sauvage. Solid stuff, and rather plentiful still on the ‘Bay. To find the pre-2012/14 version, look for bottles with white silvery caps instead of darker grey ones. The text on the front is slimmer and more spaced out on the bottle, while the juice is far more yellow in color. If you happen on a box, this version distinctly has three lines of text down at the bottom on the front, unlike the newer boxes that have one line down there, or have it moved up to the top of the grey portion. Date codes start with the letter that corresponds to year, V = 2014, and just work your way backwards. Now I’m not knocking the new formulation, it’s still very good, but if you (like me) like that vibe but want some more depth or lasting power, try the 2nd hand route. One thing to note is the ingredients lists Lilial (Butylphenyl Methylpropional) which was banned a few years ago, citing reproductive risks. If that’s a concern for you, maybe... don’t look for old bottles of LDPH.

It was a Zen garden made of glass and cold mountain water - sharp, disciplined, and completely un-sweet. PERFORMANCE: NO GHOSTS ALLOWED Unlike the "olfactory phantoms" (like the under-powered Bvlgari Pour Homme) or the cloying "sugar-traps" (like the reformulated Givenchy Pi), this classic stands as a technical monolith: Sillage: Strong. It cuts through the air with a clean, piercing presence. It doesn’t ask for attention; it commands respect. Longevity: Long lasting. A testament to the structural quality of 90s perfumery. The freshness isn't a fleeting top note; it remains a solid, skeletal presence on the skin. CONCLUSION: THE GOLD STANDARD OF CHARACTER L’Eau d’Issey remains the definitive example of what happens when a fragrance has real backbone. A sharp scalpel from a year that changed everything. It proved that "clean" could have a soul, a history, and a razor-sharp edge. In a decade defined by bold new directions - from the gourmand weight of Animale Animale to the aquatic precision of Miyake - this remains the reference point for anyone seeking freshness with a sting.

The father of citruses, a timeless classic. I still remember the first time I smelled it, early in my fragrance journey. That sharp, slightly acidic citrus opening caught me off guard, and I ended up putting it aside. Some time later, a friend told me he loved it, so I decided to give it a second chance and man... on that second wear, I discovered one of my all-time favorite fragrances. L’Eau d’Issey is a highly original aromatic citrus with tons of personality. It opens with a blend of green, citrus, and floral notes, but its true identity comes from the star here: Yuzu, which brings a more acidic, slightly drier nuance compared to other citrus fruits. The opening is bright and refreshing, evoking a clean, white environment it’s a fragrance that radiates peace, confidence, and lightness. As it dries down, the citrus tones settle, making room for the denser base notes. They never take over, though spices, florals, and woods are crafted in a smooth, comfortable way, staying more in the background while adding depth and a solid backbone to the fragrance. Performance is very solid for a citrus of this caliber. It offers good longevity and moderate projection, even in very hot weather, keeping you pleasantly scented for most of the day. Even after hours, anyone who gets close can still catch a soft, airy trail around you. When you consider its performance, note quality, unique composition, time on the market, versatility, bottle design, and price especially since you can find a 125ml for a very good price, this is easily a timeless masterpiece. If you’re looking for a signature masculine citrus fragrance with great quality, solid performance, and excellent value, you really can’t go wrong. 9/10

I do most my fragrance buying online, so they're all blind buys. But I like the excitement of not knowing exactly what to expect; it's like Christmas when these juices arrive in the mail. And this one is by far my favorite, so far, of all time. It has a fresh soapy feel to it, which is great for any daytime occasion. It also reminds me a bit of Versace Man Eau Fraiche, or Acqua Di Gio. But this one is just hitting all the right senses that they don't, and feeling a bit like I'm at the beach eating a juicy navel orange surrounded by lily of the valley flowers. The open is simply citrus on steroids, but wait several minutes and its lush flowery tones start to perk up your 'nosebuds' (is that even a word?) olfactory senses. I bathed myself in this stuff, at first just one spritz, then after that single sniff, this was going all over my body. Yea, can you tell, I'm in lust! I'm still waiting for the heavenly drydown that many write about, and I'm sure it won't fail to impress. If you like, what appears to be a classic fragrance that hits you all over with citrus and flowery notes, which I do, then you'll love this juice. UPDATE: The middle and base notes just kicked in about 30 minutes later - all I can say is wow, it really is heavenly. HIGHLY recommended.

Hard to explain this one. Very unique , very Japanese and minimalist. Strong yuzu note, it’s one of those everyone should try. I find it unisex. I am fortunate enough to own a modernish (2018) bottle and a vintage first formula bottle from either late 90s or very early 2000/2001. It still has a sticker instead of batch code engraving. The first thing is the new bottles are very respectful to the original formula and they still smell like issey miyake. People have been saying it’s not the same since 2013ish and the truth is there’s a ton of hyperbole. However there is a difference - the original formula is a lot more herbal and has more depth in these earthy / herbal notes. I suspect it’s because those base notes are just less restricted in the original formula. I get great longevity from modern stuff too but the older stuff does seem stronger. But the difference is not night and day like some reviews would make you believe.

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme is one of the few fresh fragrances that really last long on me, along with Un Jardin Sur le Nil by Hermès and Kenzo pour Homme, so that's a big plus! Well, when I first smelt this fragrance, I was very intrigued by the smell: I smelt ice. Dry ice. It is icy, pure, crystalline, cold, breezing, spicy, flowery, watery, oriental and refreshing. It's a blast of fresh energy that you receive, and that you walk with all the day long. I felt immediately in love with this perfume, and it's one of my summer signatures. Its longevity is insane for a fresh and summery fragrance, and so is the sillage: everyone will notice you, principally in the first hour Girls find this perfume extremely seductive and sexy, so it's a compliment getter, for sure! Issey Miyake did a great job creating this masterpiece, that still remains super actual in these days, and it will remain for many more. A legend.

First impression from spraying a tester on paper: extremely fresh explosion of lemon lemonade. As a redditor said: "it felt like getting punched in the face by a lemon". Sharp in the best possible way. Faint trace of spices underneath. I knew it smelled familiar, but I had a shower gel with this scent years ago. The spices/herbs get more prominent after a couple of hours. Edit 27/5/2026: revisiting this gem once more. I still love it. After 10 minutes it smells like citrus and cinnamon in a flower shop. It has that airy plant-quality but is also very spicey. This and Acqua di Gio are two sides of the same coin. Both fresh and citrusy, but going in entirely different directions. Edit 27/7/2026: A shotgun blast of bright citrus that mellows into slightly sweet, bright, airy, and watery herbs. Some cinnamon in the background. Bright, packs a bit more punch than Acqua di Gio.

So many reviews talk about the reformulation of this fragrance. Some say it is better now, but most remark on how much weaker or worse it is now. "It's just not the same as it was when I was in high school". Has anyone considered the fact that WE are not the same as we were? Our body chemistry has changed. Our sense of smell has changed. Our opinions are based on different criteria now. This smells better on my uncle Joe than it does on the guy I don't like at work. When I was a kid, the county fair was a shiny. bright, wonderland of colors and smells. Today, it's a dusty, loud, ordeal I am required to endure for my kids. It is not always the reformulation! It could be US! Oh, the horror, the horror! Bottom line----Reformulated or not, L'Eau d'Issey pour homme is one classic, sweet smelling, long lasting, Summer Scent! I give it an 8 or 9 out of ten across the board!

Since this is my favorite perfume, I thought it was going to be easier to review L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme. Well, I was wrong! I’ve been delaying this review for many months now. I just couldn’t find the right words to describe how much I love this fragrance. L’Eau D’Issey isn’t just another citrus fragrance among the many available out there. Yes, it has a very citrusy opening, but the way it develops is unique. In 32 years, no other perfume has been able to replicate the sweet tea-like scent that this fragrance has. It smells so mature, so natural, so comforting! If I could, I would probably wear it even to bed. However, since nothing is perfect, the only flaw this perfume has is its longevity. It barely reaches six hours on my skin, which is a shame, since I absolutely love the smell of L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme.

I've been hesitant on getting this fragrance or not, because it was my stepdad's signature scent. And although we do not get along now, a lot of great memories come back to me whenI smell this, because my whole childhood was spent with him. He always put it after his shower before heading off to work at night, and it honestly is very comforting. It's not a complex scent at all. It's very simple, easy to wear, office friendly (which is where I'll be wearing this most of the time) and completely inoffensive. For an EDT, the performance is great. It projects really well, and it can last up to 7 hours on skin, while maintaining most of that same level of projection. In the end, I bought it not only because it smelled good, but because it feels like home to me.

Nose Note #1043 This DNA has been reused so many times it's unbelievable. I wouldn't be surprised if every other person would recognize this scent as... a toilet air-freshener. It's not to devaluate the scent, it after all it wouldn't be duped in so many air-fresheners if it wasn't good. You know the ones named something like "Spring Flower" or "Fresh New Day" or something with jasmine or lily. I'd say this is actually almost gender neutral. If I try to detach from this image it does smell somewhat masculine and a tiny bit old school, just like a freshy from the 90s. It has a very loud start. Overall smell naturalistic, it has realistic florals, though I can't help feel that it has something from an air-freshener 7.5/10

There's always morons who compare any citrus fragrance they don't like to bathroom / cleaning products. Same idiots who compare any sweet fragrances they don't like to candles. It's the default opinion of anybody with room temperature IQ and a nose that isn't used to anything that isn't a fruity sweet bomb or imagination dupe. Funny how the same people will go on to glaze Imagination or Pacific Chill without realising that the same master perfumer made this masterpiece too. Kids will be kids though xD. Either way this is one of the greatest and most unique summer cheapies, performance is not great but just carry a decant around and spray throughout the day, it won't put a hole in your wallet afterall!

Smells like luxury at designer price. One of the best releases ever. A real composition. The citruses last also into that vibrant green crisp grassy vetiver. There is florals in play also, but they are blended very well so as to not reveal what they are. It's much more citrus and woods. Lots of herbs also mixed in so smooth too. Some bitter metallic zing. I get a hint of smoke. Juicy and mossy. Designer luxury. It's a bit shower jelly. You will recognize this smell. It's been everywhere and in everything. 8/10. There are some good smelling natural ingredients in here but this is Ambrox 10% base for sure. Leaving only so much room for everything else. And yes, CDNIM shares a big resemblance.

I met this perfume back in 2004, and it was love at first sniff. To date, this is always in my collection and I repurchase the moment I run out. This pretty much summates how great a perfume this is. Its a very unique scent and a pure definition of a manly aquatic, salty perfume. An absolute compliment magnet during the days I lived in Miami. On my skin, this lasts an easy 6-8 hours with a great scent bubble for the first 4 hours, and then some more as a skin scent with a good projection, still at arms length. On my clothes, this will last until its washed off. This is one of greatest freshies ever, a timeless classic while still being modern, and an absolute must have. A solid 7/10

This is just incredible. Probably one of the best quality-to-cost ratio out there, you can get it for basically free on discounters. The scent itself is unlike anything else. It's a freshie, but an incredibly complex one: Yuzu fruit, citruses, airy spices and sophisticated florals. Great mass appeal, very soft and well blended, all combined with exceptional performance for an EDT - I got up to 7-8 hours from a heavy test wear, and could smell it on clothes the day after. It has solid projection at beyond arms length for the first hours of the wear. Blind buy safe, suitable for warm weather or indoors, and made by one of the best perfumers out there. Juicy, clean, AMAZING 9.5/10

This is such a fresh and uplifting scent. The floral notes in this one make it fresh, dewy, and slightly powdery. The yuzu helps it stand apart from other summer freshies. It does not smell dated, synthetic, or like a budget summer fragrance. Once dry and the citrus notes dissipate (after 3 or so hours for me), you get a nice dose of woods including a prominent, earthy vetiver note. The result is a fresh, clean, dry woody masculine fragrance. Longevity and projection are great too...I get over 7 hours on skin with arms length projection for the first hour and a half/two hours. 9.2/10 - At roughly $40, this should be a summer staple in any gentleman's fragrance wardrobe.

To be honest i used a lot of timeless and New scents, Just to find my signature scent for all year long, for any occasion. I had some cheaper, some dupe, some designer one but when i find a true one it became reformulated or too pricey. After Kenzo pour homme (the original) and Carolina Herrera 212 i finally find a cheaper but even more preferable and reachable scent that i can use as my signature one. Fresh, citrusy, unique. Not the usual one. I have never been in Japan but this is how i imagine those japanese gardens. Performance and sillage is really good and strong for a fresh summer fragrance. Highly recommend but dont be too popular haha

Everyone chasing LV Imagination and its clones today... But this is the real ancestor! While the world was wearing heavy spices, Issey Miyake gave us water in a bottle. That Yuzu/Mandarin blast, the water lily heart, the musky woody base... This DNA created an entire family tree. L'Eau d'Issey is the undisputed grandfather of every citrus-themed fragrance you love today! I've been wearing this since 1997 and it has been my signature summer scent ever since. Yes, longevity is kinda poor. But who cares? One of the best summer fragrances ever made. Before there were clones, there was this. The king never dies. (R.I.P. Miyake-dono!)

My father wore this every time and gifted a bottle to me which I wore all year round at my first office job. I must say it’s a timeless classic and great worth for its price point even holding its own for freshies out there it leans more of a summer fragrance the yuzu is a very sharp yet pleasant distinct note and blends with the sandalwood and cypress. It’s a great workplace wear and can really be worn all year round. I work in a clinical setting with patients it’s still to this day an easy pick that doesn’t offend noses. While it’s silage is decent it does suffer from not so great longevity as many freshies do.

Just tried this with a bunch of other samples I'd be meaning to try, and L'eau d'Issey was my favorite of the bunch! So fresh and clean, and a lightly floral mid. An extremely likeable scent! I usually have a difficult time with scents that have citrus notes (they tend to smell like overripen fruit on me), so I was shocked at how good this smelled. I would consider this more unisex (given floral mid) as well. I will say the longevity is on the weaker side and it didn't project as much as other scents. But for a refreshing, likeable scent that stays close to the body, this is a great pick.

This is a scent that doesn't try too hard and is professional, I don't know how else to put it. Starts off as a nice citrus, then slowly fades into a floral scent with a clean scent profile - think wearing freshly ironed and laundered white shirt after showering, that sort of vibe. Lasts for a moderate amount of time, nothing mind-blowing. It's a pretty good value for money. The only con is the shape of the bottle - the cap is kind of annoying (it is tall), but the sleek nature and the iced finishing on the bottle makes it look clean and sleek. ~8/10

Smells like heaven. I love fresh fragrances, and citrusy ones aren't the exception. This is the special one. Between generic fresh perfumes, this one stands out as something extraordinary. It doesn't have that weird note that ADG and other fragrances have. It doesn't have that explosive, boring lime and water DNA other colognes have. Lotus, Yuzu, Orange... it's just pure perfection. Incredible sillage and durability too. Smell: 9.5/10. Greatest of all time. Sillage: 10/10. Durability: 9.0/10. Likeability: 9.3/10.

So unbelievably fresh and clean. Really makes this fragrance unbelievably versatile. By no means is this fragrance trying to do anything innovative but the scent profile is so pleasant, I just can't help but keep going back for more sniffs. This is a perfect example of getting the basics right. Super unoffensive and light but not in the way that it's lacking in presence. This is a no brainer you can always reach for on those days where you're not trying to think too hard.

The dry down is where the magic happens—smooth, masculine, and incredibly refined. It's easy to wear, versatile, and stands out without trying too hard. If you appreciate classic fresh fragrances, this is one that deserves a place in every collection.

My absolute favorite floral and warm-weather fragrance rolled into one. The floral notes are truly beautiful in this, and the blend has a nuance that allows a man to wear this confidently. To my nose, it has a slightly aquatic undercurrent, but primarily it evokes images of rainforest foliage and bromeliad florals. I appreciate the lily of the valley note in this blend; finally a fragrance where it is detectable.

Got this one as a sweet gift, I do see why this has been in production since the 90s. It's a fresh citrus bomb, I'm a big fan of the Yuzu and lemon, decent performance in the heat. Amazing fresh smell that gives you the confidence to power through your day. Often found at a good price, I say get it. I plan to get the 200ml bottle once my 75ml bottle is over also planning to get the recently launched EDP

This fragrance still hits right even though it's over 32 years old. It's still sold at department stores even after all these years which tells you something. IMO this one has always punched above its price point. It's also complex for it's price bracket without breaking the bank. Even with formula financial constraints, Jacques Cavallier really built a great fragrance that put this house on the map.

This is not your ordinary, boooring, citrusy fragrance. Very UNIQUE fresh, soapy feel. This fragrance has its own evolution. The beginning is strange, the end is heavenly. Top notes: Sharp, sour, bitter citrus and cat piss like opening. Middle notes: Intense soapy floral and citrusy, very BRIGHT and FIZZY!!! Drydown: Aromatic and woody Acqua di gio, more interesting ADG. This is the best part.

I must say it's only my first try, but I'm somewhat dissapointed by this fragance. I like it, but I am by no means as blown away by it as I expected. I feel the citric smell, which leans more to sweet than acid, is a bit too forward. I like the overall smell, but I expected a different profile. Let's see if it grows on me, but so far, not very impressed.

The best EdT on the market and my go-to high-heat/sport scent. The floral notes lean slightly unisex, and women absolutely love it. This blend is simply beautiful. It could be one of Jacques Cavallier’s greatest creations—personally, I think it’s better than most of his work for Louis Vuitton. It also has surprisingly good longevity for an EdT.

Amazingly unique summer scent at a fairly reasonable price point. And it's unique without giving the impression that it's trying too hard to be something that it isn't. It feels like a slightly mature fragrance in the sense I wouldn't picture it on a 20-year-old, but someone in their 30s would be right at home wearing this one.

Aerial, ozonic and fresh sea breeze that radiates from your body. You don't really smell it but people can feel it (in a moderate/close range) but it is absolutely perfect whenever you need to have a discreet fragrance and yet something that is really pleasant for people around you to smell. Absolute masterclass since 1994.

One of my favourites and it is is a classic. I love everything about it, the harsh yuzu opening, the excellent drydown, the subtle herbal notes. It is elegant, classy and yet completely safe. It is excellent and will remain so for years to come. It is unique. 9/10. A Legendary staple for your wardrobe.

It's clean, fresh and timeless scent. Price is very good on this one. Yuzuu note makes it more unique than Aqua di Gio which is similar (but l'Eau d'Issey projects a lot better). I will keep buying this. I hope it will never be discontinued. 10/10 - a masterpiece.

Juicy yuzu with a clean soapy undertone. Its actually crazy how juicy this scent smells I cant even explain it. It borders the line of being a edible scent, but I say borders since its still a freshie. Sillage is eh, but cheap enough to reapply.

Huzzz (male ones at least) compliment it. Fresh , yuzu scent with a peppery opening that gets more pleasant as it dries. Sillage and projection are minimal but it’s better that way. Like walking around a rainy lime forest in Japan or sum shit

There's something so beautifully green but wow the yuzu is one the best and clear top note i could pick out and the cypress I don't get overly strong woods but I do get tobacco thats not overpowering it quite nice i don't even like tobacco

This is my partner's signature scent and I can smell it on him from a room away. Every time he wears it I just want to be CLOSER to him. Great, clean smell. Like taking a shower after spending the morning walking through an orchid.

It's just timeless, it doesn't need any upgrade. Sharp, sour citrus, there are some watery accents in it - i can smell fresh flowers putted into cold water underneath these citrus, and it's absolutely pleasent. Overspray required

In the 90s, this fragrance was everywhere. Workplaces, nightclubs, restaurants, etc, you name it. The chicks loved this stuff. It’s considered a classic today but it’s better than almost all the shit getting released today.

There is a reason this Perfume has been there since 1994. It's a great muscline clean summer perfume. I wish I knew this perfume earlier. I give it 9/10. If ur thinking of getting it, go ahead. It's a safe blind buy.

I heard somewhere that it's an oriental Aqua di Gio and couldn't agree more; the first time I smelled it, I thought it was the odor of a flower shop: romantic, fresh, and sophisticated, great for spring and summer.

Love this on my husband but longevity could be better. Smells refreshing clean and exciting! It's definitely good value for such lovely perfume. I know quite a few people who use this one and are very satisfied.

Kinda like a softer version of imagination. Not as soapy, more floral. You get the citrus and tea but they're not too prominent. EASILY my favorite dumb reach. And the performance isnt as bad as people say.

Super fresh perfume that is timeless. Gives you that "clean" smell and is perfect for day-to-day use. Lasts very long on skin, and can feel it the day after on my clothes. Good projection aswell

Fastest I've gone through a 125ml. Its such a clean and sophisticated herbal citrus. I don't know why but it smells like a cool sunny and windy day in a tall grass plain next to the ocean.
