Canasta

This one is a difficult to find vintage perfume, and finding any accurate notes for it are difficult as well. It definitely is a fruity chypre with a peach note, but it's not the sort of peach that's in Mitsouko, which uses aldehyde C 14 to give it its peach scent. The peach in this is not as lush and fruity. It's even more bitter and non-sweet than Mitsouko, dark and almost acrid at times. I have a bottle of EDT, so I would really like to be able to get a bottle of the parfum, because I don't get any "cherry liqueur" note as is attributed to it. I found another site that said it's a woody musk. It has some woody notes to it, but I wouldn't say it's a musk. It's a definite chypre with the crisp dryness from oak moss. This perfume was brought out in the early 1950's, and it has that feel of being worn by a woman at that time with a crisp white blouse, a day suit that women wore in that era, and high heels, and a fine hat. Something to wear during the day for luncheon with gloves and shopping in couture stores. I can't say that I'm in love with this, but it's an interesting experience perfume. Wish I could find a well preserved bottle of the parfum, but from the '50's a well preserved chypre is tough to find.

Pink chypre. Linking Canasta and kirsch liqueur is, in my opinion, an interesting and subtle description. Not fresh picked cherries that are purple and red, but canned green cherries, red cherries, and sweet almonds to decorate the cake. I agree, when I smelled Canasta, I did briefly think - there might be a vaguely echoing relationship between the two. The original peach aroma must have come from peach aldehyde C-14. Distinct heliotrope, jasmine, violet and orris root, all ground to a fine powder, orris root with a prominent suede feel, spread evenly on a dense base of patchouli-musk resins (amber, labdanum) superior. There should be a touch of vanilla and tuberose, but very little.

My bottle is a mini with a gold cap which I wear sparingly. I wasn't too impressed the first time, but it grows on me. Its bright fruity herbal opening gives a fun and naughty vibe. It turns a little earthiness from the patchouli and oakmoss. There is a violet flower undercurrent. The peach is a little musty because of the patchouli I think. It was reviewed to have a cherry liquer note which I cannot find even after wearing quite a few times. Overall, it is a glamorous 50's perfume but doesn't take itself too seriously.
