Expression

From the shimmering of aldehydes in its opening to the haunting ambergris leather base, Expression would very well be a feat if reconstructed today. It's fused by musks, fixatives and various materials that may today be restricted, banned, or prohibitively expensive. I cannot decide if it is magnificently of its time or has a cool, poetic timelessness to it. Some might scoff at it, roll their eyes, "I've smelled this before," "what's so special?" "A 70s chypre? Those were a dime a dozen in their time." I, however, sense something different. Perfumer Raymond Chaillan added something mysterious here amongst the bitter galbanum shifting to metallic-rose and then into somber orris. Its amorphous quality makes me pause and pay close attention. The devil is in the details, and I am enjoying the challenge of deciphering while simply "feeling." That dichotomy of cerebral and intuitive: I at first want to know technique, then in another sniff, I just want to lean into wonder and abandon any desire to "figure it out." There is a beautiful humility to Expression. Released in 1977, the same year as Opium (of which Chaillan also contributed his talent), Expression doesn't seem to be built to impress disco dollies and gregarious hedonists. Its luxury is understated, lucid. Yet it penetrates, courtesy of an apiary in its heart and base: the mildly sweet, yet peculiar animalic tones of honey and beeswax. Peeling back the layers, the chill of crisp bergamot + green and aldehydic sparkle are softened and warmed up, making it feel more pliable (more intriguing amorphousness). There is a suspended phrase that smells like a just snuffed candle in a room of wildflowers and earth. Then another phrase that is more melodic, amber-like, woody, and serene. Forward we go, and it's an impasto-thick musk with heavy, globular molecules that feel like a weighted blanket to ease anxiety, with the whisper of dried flowers, distant salty funk and dusty oakmoss clinging to time-worn bark. Expression captures the melancholy of winter and the promise of the early spring thaw.

I dont understand why in our database only Anais Anais marked as his creation. He did plenty of masterpieces, including Boucheron homme, Opium, Ho Hang, YSL pour Homme, Parfum d’Hermès, Carven Monsieur Carven and many, many others Expression is not very well known, its a mystery fragrance, its the best that I have in whole collection possibly. Expression opens at once – lots of honey, wood, amber and leather, then..it melts as a wax, burns on your skin like most expensive candle, its so passionate and..tender, heavenly and yet earthy, you trapped in a place which does not belong anywhere else, place that you never been before. Very warm ambergris, wild carnation, which can only grow on top of mountains, as high to the sky and sun as possible, smells like heather as well. Expression also smoky-mossy based, its a little bit tarty, acerb, like the smell of immortelle, animalic, - be it leather with flowers mix or certain way of honey reproduction, it has everything within you can only wish for. I can go on for ages. Expression is a right name for such unreal perfume – you can not put it into words, but your face expression while you wear it – says everything.

This is a fantastic fragrance and one I wear sparingly because it's no longer in production. I am lucky enough to have a bottle and I love it so much, it's like no other perfume. It does resemble soir de lune as Rossiniopera mentions, there are certainly similarities. I love SdL too. However this is rich, sweet/spicy/peppery but understated and subtle so it's not a spice bomb or a sugar explosion it's a sexy, grown up, feminine fragrance that I first bought in 1981 when I was 15 years old (I know, right?). It formed part of the "French Quarter" set of perfumes lauched in the late '70's that also included Guy Laroche's Clandestine and two others I unforntunately don't remember. All in all, this was by far the best of the four and is hands down amongst my top 10 perfumes of all time. Divine.

This fragrance is absolutely superb so rich and strong woody green aromatic I am totally in love😍 I fell so lucky that I was able to find it for reasonable price. Sadly they don't make these kind of fragrances any more. After sniffing it for a while I finally realised that on my skin it is identical to Fendi classic edp. I sprayed one on each hand and after a while i couldn't tell much difference. I love them both, sadly they are both discontinued and I have to guard my bottles like a treasure.

The production was apparently discontinued..... But it lives on in Knowing by Estee Lauder thank good, and Estee Lauder.
