Hippie Rose

Received a sample a year ago. What a ride it has been! I was quite underwhelmed while simultaneously annoyed by it. The emotional and mental aspect was nonetheless acutely addictive (and not in a "good" way, if one can even label anything 'addictive' as being 'good', but I digress). The crux of the issue, to summarize, was a failure to meet expectations: the reality of what I was smelling, frustratingly, juxtaposed Hippie Rose's lovely, quaint description. Thus it compelled me to almost (almost!) "rage quit" but, oh no, the allure was there, despite finding these early experiences wholly unpleasant; whatever juju that had been worked into its DNA certainly kept me hooked. I believe this is sometimes referred to as a 'toxic relationship' -- you hate each other but then you make up a day later. You hold hands in public but it is purely out of spite. Etcetera. In those early days, Hippie Rose evoked an image of an intoxicated 20-something walking through the halls of a seedy music venue. While not the most pleasant mental image, it did feel a bit nostalgic. To be fair, this image still does come through but it is less in-your-face and more of a distant memory--a lesson learned, in other words. The rose was extremely subtle these first few months and it just only seemed to occasionally escape the musk and incense and crappy bathroom cologne in the immediate dry down. Months had elapsed and, to my absolute amazement, the scent started to evolve. Slowly at first and then all at once, as they say. It was no longer emotionally draining to deal with. As the juice began to mature (perhaps it was my nose, or perhaps we both shared the 'blame'), it grew on me in an almost surreal manner... it was no longer offensive, it no longer seemed overtly dirty and cringe-y. Instead, it felt lush. The greenery from neighborhood trees provide the perfect amount of shade as the days begin growing longer. And while not a note listed, I get orange zest and orange pulp. The patchouli remains discernable throughout but it has mellowed, its sweetness adds to a blossoming array of roses which are increasingly apparent. A slight acidity remains but it is much more subdued and more cozy: everything seems fresh, invigorated, and indeed a bit 'clean' (without being medicinal). The musk transformed into that gorgeous "sun kissed" aspect in its description. Its beauty is in its balance. On one hand, it feels "naughty"; on the other, it is a safe-naughty. It has enamored me for weeks and now I cannot wait to purchase a full size. Intoxicating and (dare I say) extremely sensual.

Bergamot, airy green notes and rose make for a bowl of velvety sweet pink rose petals, Like concentrated rose water -- so pretty! Patchouli in Hippie Rose is fresh, young and green, a little minty and camphorous -- just. The incense smells like clean, musky labdanum. Pink, sweet, and clean. Musky, minty, woody, aromatic rose glinting with a sparkling amber. I keep falling in deeper and deeper as Hippie Rose warms on my skin. So versatile, effortlessly going from hemp bracelets to diamonds without so much as a twitch. Unpretentiously chic and natural. Much 'pinker' and more aromatic than most rose-patch scents. I think I'm in love. Sometimes falling in love happens so unexpectedly, like when a company throws in a random sample with your order. My wardrobe was lacking a rose scent and this is the one I didn't know I was yearning for.

I love Hippie Rose, it's really good. I liked it a lot when I first tried it, but didn't love it, but, I kept wanting to wear it, more and more, until, after about a week, I have fallen totally in love with it! It's a gorgeous, cold crisp rose, beautiful herby/earthy patchouli and oakmoss, soft smooth melting amber, gorgeous dry, musty, smoky vetiver, and a lovely green affair running right through it all. I adore it. It's quite unique for me, and one of my favourites now. I think the rose and patchouli are the best parts, and they're wonderful!! Really enjoyable, and beautiful. And it lasts, for oh, about 16 hours, and has a fabulous sillage of a few feet, which I love, especially that everyone else I come in contact with seems to feel the same, from the number of compliments I get!! I'm so happy!!!

Very natural smelling rose dew rings throughout what I would describe as an elaborate oakmoss accord with a solid green and slightly chocolatey and camphorous patchouli backbone resolving onto a lightly sweet musky base. No powder here, no soap, just a fresh, green, realistic freshly cut rose with the citric and green nuances, but also with a watery quality. It follows Heeley's wonderful modern minimalist style, with a touch of that tasteful retro feel. As someone who is quite reluctant to wear feminine leaning unisex fragrances (as I feel they don't represent me) this is the first time I enjoy a fragrance to the point where I am heavily tempted to ignore public perception and indulge freely in green rose mist.

I'm another fan of HR. A very nice bright rose with a touch of bergamot opening that makes me think there is a touch of palmarose present. The roses eases off a little and then you are very aware of the patch. I do get some incense but it is very low key on my skin. I now get a little vetiver, green notes and oak moss behind the rose. For the rest of its time line this is pretty much what you get. Roses with some greenery and a touch of patch. Its interesting how the incense remains so low key on me. If you love roses like me then this is definitely one to try. Very very nice. A nice fragrance for a sunny spring day but don't apply too much as this hippie is no shy flower. Moderate silage and good longevity.

Avoid Hippie Rose if you dislike patchouli. On the other hand, if you are like me and patchouli is your human catnip, go for it. I can smell the Bulgarian rose and other notes intermittently, but the patchouli is there from beginning to end. Although patchouli can sometimes render a fragrance dark, heavy and somewhat witchy, Hippie Rose is so deftly blended that it's actually sunny and upbeat, perhaps by virtue of the bergamot. As much as I love this fragrance, at about $200 a bottle, you have to be a trust fund type hippie to be able afford it. So much for free love. But that aside, James Heeley seems to have a great deal of talent, and I look forward to exploring the whole line.

I gotta say that I LOVE patchouli in this fragrance. Hippie Rose is a nicely blend of both fresh rose and green patchouli. It's also got something tarty sweet and sour tang as well. It's nicely fresh and surprisingly modern. it is quite uplifting at the beginning til it dries down into something more masculine and very subtle incense. All I have is just a sample vial, but I am sure I will be looking forward to acquire a full bottle in the future. Time to save up $$$

This is such a beautiful true rose scent! Clean concentrated rose water, grounded with fresh green patchouli. The vetiver gives it a clean almost soapy feeling.. The incense is not a smoky incense at all.. more so a small box of incense that has yet to be lit. Completely unisex. Suitable as an everyday casual fragrance but also appropriate for formalwear. Hippie Rose is a mouthwatering fragrance that stays fresh and cool and just might be my new summer scent. Love 💕

I agree with many of the below comments. The rose is dewy and there is a greenness to it that feels almost like the sun coming through after a Spring rain. It is more intimate than I expected, but in a good way. It makes for a great daytime scent that is non-offensive and lovely. The price is higher than I would like, but honestly I will probably still buy another bottle when mine runs out.

I have tested this scent twice and it has grown on me. I am not a huge Rose fan, but the rose and patchouli combination makes this fragrance amazing. Its soft, but last a really long time. I find myself smelling my wrist all the time. I just learned about Heeley last week and I can't believe how wonderful his line is. I recommend everyone try his scents.

EDIT: Rewriting the whole review. This is my favorite rose perfume so far. It is incredibly deep, cozy, sensual, musky, and maybe even *slightly* dirty in a cannabis-patchouli way. At the same time it's airy, architectural, clever, and sharp. Everything is perfectly in its place. Longevity is superb. Great for all seasons and all genders. 5/5

As a premise I will tell that I am not a big fan of rose based perfumes. This one, however, has something that I truly like. It's not very rosy, not soapy at all, not bad rose cheap smelling. As it warms and melts with skin it gains a depth; the rose feeling grows from a little girl into a chic lady. I'll love it, definitely love it.

Great perfume, quite minimalistic, I mostly get a green dry rose surrounded by incense and patchouli. Very easy to wear and versatile. I don't get any similarities with Portrait of a lady, this one is not fruity and is darker. The performance is better than what I expected, if you like rose try it !

I have smelled many rose fragrances but to me Hippie Rose is the best one full stop. Edit A coulpe of months later, the fragrance seems pretty weak in terms of sillage. I still enjoy it immensely but the truth is, as much as I am into unisex fragrances, it leans more feminine.

I feel instantly relaxed wearing this. I love the subtle notes in this - rose, patchouli and a light papery quality. Comfort, ‘slouchiness’, cheerful, time spent with friends, flipflops & jeans, everyday, feeling at home. One of my favourites.

an amazing bewitched rose, seductive, attractive and mysterious .. i gave you uo there similars to it and frim the same family as well as pherose by realm but pherose is the most similar to it .. end of story

A soft rose and subtle patchouli beautifully blended. Very wearable. I didn't like Hippie Rose when I first smelled it -- maybe it needed more time to cure and mellow.

Hippie Rose is a straightforward but satisfying patchouli-rose with a mossy chypre base. I have a weakness for rose perfumes, and this is a high-quality, aptly-named airy yet rich rose dosed with a cloud of patchouli. The rose is dewy and green initially, becoming jammier as it progresses. It is a fresh, pink rose, complemented to perfection by the patchouli-forward chypre accord. There is a lot of greenness in here. HR opens with a dewy, rosewater-like rose note, freshened by light, tart bergamot up top. There is a green undertone from the beginning, paving the way for the patchouli note that permeates this scent. The patchouli emerges quickly, an earthy cloud that adds a nice underlying dirtiness, enhancing the rose beautifully. There is a lovely mossiness to this scent too. The chypre base is present from the early stages, becoming deeper and richer as this scent develops. The rose-patchouli accord remains king throughout, but woody and musky notes creep in as it begins to dry down. It fades to a musky, earthy skin scent with rose remaining until final fade. Sillage and longevity are moderate. Feminine-leaning in my opinion, though unisex based on taste, HR is fresh rose scent, best worn in spring/summer. While this is not the rose profile I typically choose (I like dark, rich, spicy roses best), HR is a great example of a rose-patchouli scent. Aptly named, it is bohemian, evocative of 1970s hippies. Relaxed, undone elegance, immensely likeable. 4/5.

The name of Heeley HIPPIE ROSE led me naturally to expect that this would be a patchouli bomb. (I'm probably still reeling from my experience of Lush KARMA.) In fact, this is an exceptionally well-blended and well-behaved patchouli rose. In contrast to Malle PORTRAIT OF A LADY and Juliette has a gun VENGEANCE EXTREME, this creation, HIPPIE ROSE, despite its name, is a patchouli rose perfume which I would be able to wear comfortably in public settings without worrying about drawing unwanted attention to myself. The difference lies in part, I think, in the sweetness level. I do not detect vanilla here, and it is not listed among the notes. I also find that the rose is more important than the patchouli, so although there is a touch of hippie here, it's more like a trust-fund hippie who studied classical piano and was trained by a benevolent nanny or governess to abide by the mannered conventions of good society. This hippie is not wearing dirty jeans. Maybe they are jeans which have been dyed to look dirty, but really they are clean. A very nice perfume, probably misnamed.

Hippie Rose is rather well-named. The immediate olfactory association I get is to be taken back to a long forgotten shop called The Bead Machine, which used to sell incense and candles. The smell of Hippie Rose reminds me of that rose incense smell before you burn it. Hippie Rose is rather powerful and has quite heavy sillage and lasts a very long time so be careful when you apply it! It can give you a headache if you overspray. As the name suggests, the dominant note throughout is the rose. The patchouli is there but it is blended well with the incense and the oakmoss and a touch of vetiver so it remains prominent rather than dominant. The bergamot makes it a little sharp at the start but it gets better as some vague green notes take its place after an hour or so. But it is always the rose that is the star player. Nice, but I'm not sure about paying 125 Euros for 100 ml. I'd be happy with it as a gift but I'm not sure that I would spend that amount of my own money on it.
