JD Scatamalis Base

Sampling this one. Scatamalis reminds me strongly of an earlier era's men's fougere, like Z-14 or the green Polo. It smells like Irish Spring soap, with something gorgeous and skanky masterfully mixed in. I can't tell where the clean, green soap ends, and where the funky undertone begins, which signifies quality to me. Scatamalis leans more masculine, but I'm loving these notes in combination with each other, and the entire composition on my (37f) skin. Despite leaning masculine, it doesn't feel uncomfortable or out of place when I have it on―in fact, it seems a rather polite perfume, sillage-wise. I can't pick out one note over another, really, but I would've expected oakmoss (or at least evernyl acetate) and some kind of suede leather (alpha isomethyl ionones?) to be in the listed notes. It does not smell fecal or urinous, but skanky, the way the leather/iris/tuberose accord in HdP's Tubereuse 1 Capriceuce is. This is nothing like I expected, but then, Muscs Koublai Khan (a gorgeous vintage-style musk perfume) wasn't either. TL DR: Love the classic soap accord juxtaposed with the dirtier base.

This is such an interesting fragrance! I got the oil roller ball to use as a base layer with other scents, but find myself reaching for it to use alone. A tiny dab brings the funk of animalics to the forefront. I get compliments on it, which has never been my motivation for wearing something, but it’s nice to know others like this controversial accord. On occasion, I’ve dabbed too much and it smells like soap? Like the Ivory soap clean musk scent so many Your Skin But Better fragrances aim for. My favorite ways to wear this are under earthy, resinous vanilla concoctions like Shalimar, and with indolic white florals like Dame’s Linden Blossom and Gardenia. But the Shalimar? This is how to bring back the sophisticated funk of yesteryear, before civet frags were neutered.

Vintage Jicky, or anything with civet, proves that fecal animalics add a radiant warmth to fragrance. Words can’t really describe it. but I tried using this base and various fragrances from Amber Orientals to Chypres, and it indeed adds a radiant warmth. I don’t understand how that could be repugnant to anyone. But then again I prefer animalics to clean fragrances.

Supposedly base for layering with JD Juste Filthy. In actually, stands well on it's own and is a more complete fragrance than Juste Filthy. Whereas JF is mainly a civet blast, this is deeper and woodier. The fecal/civet blending with the cedar, vetiver and musk evoke the stinky but also happy/comforting aura of a warm barn with animals, hay and wood shavings.

Scatamalis Base has that deep, primal richness that feels both raw and refined. I love using as a base layer for other fragrances. Absolutely amplifies animalic and leathery fragrances. Pushing the buy button on a full bottle of this soon.

This is not meant for solo use, it’s made to be layered. And yes, it does smell like shit, but in a earthy barnyard kind of way.

Tested Scatamalis layered as a base with Juste Filthy on top, both from samples purchased from the JD website. As the note votes show, skatole is the number one note and it provides a noticeable poo note. However, it's not the only note and Scatamalis won't fill a room with a dirty diaper, full bedpan or porta potty smell. That said, I think I'd have a hard time wearing Scatamalis by itself. Using it as a base for Juste Filthy (which it was designed for as its six base notes are the same base notes used in Juste Filthy), it really makes Juste Filthy shine. While Juste Filthy is nice by itself, it's awesome when layered this way. It would also be useful layering with other perfumes to give them more animalic punch. I can't see it being worn by itself by either men or women, so I rated it as unisex. It can be used as a base under pretty much any perfume (masculine, feminine or unisex) to amp up the animalics. Having it available separately gives the user complete control on the amount of punch but it does require the purchase 2 bottles (that is, Juste Filthy and Scatamalis).

I just got this today in the mail. JD always sends the most wonderful mix of sundry samples when you order something. Even if you don't love the scent you paid for, you are almost for sure going to love one of the two or three other items they send as a surprise! Anyway, this is pretty much what it advertises. If you are an animalic lover, then you will likely find something in this to love. I don't think it smells gross (but my kids did) which goes to show that there are different strokes for different folks. I get a strong animalic with a good dose of metallic notes and musc. Not offensive to my nose at all and quite interesting. I like to smell interesting but I know others may want to smell classy or sexy. I am not sure I can call this sexy. For $18, get the rollerball and enjoy all the other stuff you get. Where are all the reviews of all the people who got this for free in his giveaway? I had to order it cuz the freebies got snatched up in less than 4 hours.

I got this as a sample when I bought Juste Filthy. If you smell it off the sprayer, it's honestly poopy, however... If you try it on and give it a chance to dry down, it's a sexy, interesting animalic fragrance. Definitely indolic, which I guess comes from the scatole. It definitely adds an oomph to Juste Filthy, but I layered it with JD Musc Neutre and Oh la la! Sillage is moderate, but it lasts all day. I ended up buying a full bottle, which I don't regret.

Layer this with ~Keora~ by Jean Couturier (preferably the 80s vintage) for the FILTHIEST, smoky leather, boozy vanilla, animalic amber Elixir you've yet to experience...Heaven! Helpful Hint: Scatamalis in its cream form is a lot more user friendly than the EDP, as it is less intense, plus it creates the perfect emollient base on which to "lay" whatever other fragrance you're layering it with, the cream base will also augment their longevity.

Layer the rollerball oil of this with the New Musk oil and BOOM! Smell like a million bucks. But seriously, I bought this on a whim to "dirty" up other perfumes I own and enjoy, and I must say it's the best eighteen bucks I've spent this year. It's pretty amazing under florals.

A true, challenging niche experience. I've actually layered it successfully with Ricardo Ramos' Knus. I wonder how it would go with Kanon's Desert Soldier or Conde Parfums' Cuir Vert. I've been to wild places in South Texas and this evokes certain animal spaces there, in a truly photorealistic and vaguely overwhelming way. A genuine fulfillment, albeit one in a position within the "challenging" category of scents. I'll continue to play with combining it with other scents I'd like to swing in more of an animalistic direction.

I like indolic perfumes a lot and I realize this is supposed to used as a layering base but this will be going in the trash. I got it free w/ my Jeffery dame order of a full bottle of Duality and samples of his 3 rose perfumes. Here is what I think Scatamalis smells like, cat pee that was unsuccessfully cleaned up w/ lemon cleaner. The cat pee and lemon cleaner combined to create a mutant funk that is imbedded in your carpet fibers. I doubt a professional cleaner could get rid of it. My mind goes to the Jerry Seinfeld episode where Jerry's car is funkified by the stinky valet and even the professional car cleaning couldn't get rid of the smell. This is bad stuff on its own and I don't trust it enough to layer w/ it. My husband thinks it smells like shoe polish rubbed into a rug and you tried to clean it out w/ a lemon cleaner. I get cat pee, he gets shoe polish and lemon cleaner. A hard no.

This literally smells like animal 💩 It's the only fragrance I've tried that simultaneously PMO and made me nauseatingly ill. I've never had such a visceral reaction to any fragrance like that before.... Clearly I have to draw a line with certain artistic/niche scents ..,with THIS being at the top of my list of BIG FAT NOs.

This one is very, very interesting, and I mean in a very good way. I'm a Dame fan already, because scents work well on my skin. My last order earned me a bonus sample set that included this, and it's so intriguing. For some reason, when I smell animalic scents, I don't get the full fecal factor (omg, did I just write that) that a lot of people seem to get. I own a vintage bottle of Van Cleef and Arpel First (which has real civet in it), and there are so many similarities, though, obviously, First is so much more. I'd try layering, but First is already a big punch. I did test Scatamalis under a bunch of my Guerlain scents, as recommended below (Shalimar, Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue), and it does add that extra oomph to the fragrances. I had a harder time with Juste Filthy, and it may well be the extra note of cumin combined with the civet/skatole notes, but this, just worn under a musk, would be the perfect dirty-clean scent. Obviously, this is not for everyone, but it is definitely for me. I mean, I tried, but I just don't really get or like Baccarat Rouge or any of the dupes because they just smell like synthetic aroma on me, or straight from the bottle on paper, but I'm pretty much anosmic with respect to that rather hyped scent. Get this if you are a fan of animalics. Edit: It just occurred to me, this would layer beautifully under my vintage My Sin and make it last longer. So many possibilities.

You need a fondness for strong animalics to like Scatamalis, the name says it all. For me it's barnyard right out of the gate and turns the civets loose, with the rest following along. A pleasant muskiness arrives later. I bought this because I figured it would be more versatile for layering than Juste Filthy, which I also have and enjoy. I find that it provides an animalic oomph to some of my less-than complex fragrances of mine, and helps extend their longevity. The layering tempers the barnyard quite a bit too, it just blends in as a nice animalic background. So far I've had very good results layering Scatamalis under Milton Lloyd's Kantali (has similarities to vintage Opium), and Revlon Charlie Gold. Next I'm going to try layering with Jean Patou's Chaldee. So if you like animalics and enjoy layering your fragrances, I recommend giving Scatamalis a try.

Jeffrey Dame was nice enough to give away 100 samples of this and Juste Filthy to Fragrantica users and I just got my samples today :) If you happen to read this, thank you very much for the samples. The sprayers he uses put out a good amount more than I was expecting, so my two sprays may have actually been around 3, and those 3 sprays put me into olfactory fatigue. To answer the question on everyone's mind: yes, this definitely smells dirty. It smells fecal within 10 seconds, but not comically fecal. This isn't a Sombre or Secretions Magnifique, it's the kind of dirty I imagine vintage fragrance fans would like with a little extra. It's my first day wearing this by itself; tomorrow I'll edit this post to review it as a layering scent.

A unique animalic layering scent for a niche audience. Not urinous or "catty", more general barnyard and teetering on the edge of truly fecal. I personally would test in combination with other fragrances in the privacy of my own home and maybe on family members first before venturing out in public, but I can see how this scent could complement other fragrances in a positive way.

This is stinking great for what it is! It's poop but without the unhygienic downsides. JD offers an awesome Scatamalis skin cream which I got as a free sample with purchase of the fragrance. This company is the sh*t! I'll definitely explore more offerings from this house: very affordable and seem appreciative of customers.

Don’t act like you like this. Just don’t. You can appreciate that it is unlike any other bottled scent. But you can walk in an alley, get in a fight with a raccoon, get shit all over you and still smell better. It’s pure poop. Just poop. 2 girls, 1 fragrance.
