Romantic by Jeanne Arthes

I bought Romantic based on its notes and ignored its classification here; I tend to avoid fruity florals as I think of them as being a bit "girly" for me - not that there's anything wrong with that - I just tend to prefer quite heavy orientals and "unisex" perfumes, particularly in colder weather (and in warmer weather I love fresh florals and zingy citrussy perfumes). Romantic by Jeanne Arthes though is a very rich, very French perfume, which I think is better classified as a floral chypre. The initial spray bounces out of the bottle, throwing blackcurrants, raspberries and plums at you; this initial exuberance is reined in rather rapidly and the rich, spicy, oriental notes start to take over. Sandalwood and ginger predominate in the middle, there's some powder and a distinct slightly animalic leathery accord coming from the labdanum, whilst amber, oakmoss and patchouli provide a traditional base. I am not getting any white flowers - certainly not picking up rose either, but I think there's a yellow floral richness from the ylang ylang and marigolds. Whilst I am not suggesting Romantic is a dupe for Cartier's La Panthere, its structure is not dissimilar. Sillage is soft, bordering on arms-length and longevity is also moderate. Romantic is a traditional "perfumey" perfume. It's classy and seems to be a largely undiscovered gem; it's a shame it's been discontinued and is so hard to find. I honestly think that if you told someone it was produced by Dior or YSL in the mid-20th century they wouldn't doubt you. Note - I am referring to the JA perfume Romantic in the bottle shown above. There's no information on Fragrantica about when this one was launched, but Jeanne Arthes was founded in 1978; looking at the bottle, it wouldn't surprise me if this was one of the first - if not THE first perfume the company produced. There's another JA with the same name, but with different notes which was launched in 2015. If you love vintage perfumes and see this for sale, it's definitely worth trying. I think it's beautiful.

This perfume is like a true classic, very well blended notes, it contains something of everything, it is fruity, floral, woody, a bit spicy, a bit amber, it is a wonderful perfume!

this is a very delicate fragrance and feminine as Chanel no5, soft and romantically whimsical. not overpowering, just pleasantly noticeable. Now called "Romantic Story". I was quietly delighted smelling this and want to get it.
