Green Wheat & Meadowsweet

Lately, I have gravitated towards simple and comforting scents, and Jo Malone has a great many in their catalogue, but there is this one from their English Fields Collection that embodies the feeling of repose I so desire. I was initially drawn by its featuring meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), an aromatic and herbaceous plant that favors marshy meadows that has been used in flavoring beers, wines, meads, and desserts. It has also been historically scattered onto floors to give rooms its distinct scent, as a "strewing herb" much like sweet flag, hyssop, southernwood, and lavender. I own its essential oil—a curious profile of almond, cooling mint, wintergreen sweetness and herbal camphor. In this Jo Malone composition, it does feel apparent that this oil is used, or a magnificently rendered accord has been created. Meadowsweet is paired with indeed a certain vibrant green grassiness and a nutty, hulled barley effect, punctuated with a bright grapefruit at the top and underlined with the most nuanced of woods. Its initial crispness after an hour or two mellows into dry down so tranquil that I just want to don the softest pajamas, wrap myself in the comfiest blanket, sip on some tea, and read some pastoral poetry until my eyes grow heavy and I fall asleep. Alternatively, I may want to apply some and take a walk in the nearby glade and admire the waning summer wildflowers, the swaths of goldenrod, until the sun sets. As always, your mileage may vary, but I for one feel like this is just the remedy for when my weary mind is running on empty.

This is the first time a scent has made me say "wow" out loud. It's unbelievably delicious, just fantastic... but I also find myself a bit conflicted by it. It smells great, but feels like it's meant for someone else. My skin tends to absorb green and fresh smells while amplifying sweet ones. So on me, the sweetness of the wheat is the primary scent, with just a hint of freshness between the grapefruit and green notes. It smells like a slice of rustic brown bread fresh from the oven and drizzled in honey. There's an open window bringing a hint of a fresh breeze, and you're wearing a long white dress with lace. It's peaceful, pastoral, borderline cottagecore. Almost like if Wood Sage & Sea Salt took a cottage vacation. The longevity is also really good on me, I get about 4 hours of light projection, then a further close personal scent bubble for another 4-6 hours. I can even still smell it the next day if I press my nose to my wrist! The reason I feel conflicted, however, is because it's totally not my vibe at all. It doesn't go with how I dress or see myself, and it's not quite right for a playful, purposefully clashing thing either. It puts me in such a weird headspace that, so far, I've mostly been wearing it to bed. About ten years ago I was very much into the whole twee Laura Ashley look, and I find myself wishing I'd known about this perfume then. I would have loved to put this on for a picnic in a field. Now, I'm just not sure what to do... except take another deep whiff of it.

Wow! When the JM English Fields collection was widely available, I wasn't that interested in trying Green Wheat & Meadowsweet. Then someone gave me a sample and now I'm in love. To my nose this is something special. It opens up with grapefruit and green herbs, but the wheat note is already underlying. It's fresh and sweet, but also a little savory. Hard to explain, but on the one hand I get a sharp, almost woody note, on the other hand a hint of sweetened cereals. In the drydown it gets more grainy and sweeter, but not as sweet as Oat & Cornflower from the same line. A natural smelling scent that is rustic, but refined and even a little romantic. It makes me think of sitting on a plaid picknick blanket next to a cornfield, wearing a white cotton sundress. An idealized version of country living. It's a soft fragrance, typical for Jo Malone, but I don't mind at all, I don't think this kind of scent would work with a loud sillage. Just a warning for those who are looking for something bolder. I really hope I'll be able to obtain a partly used bottle for a decent price, or for JM to bring it back one day. Some of the listings I currently see on ebay.de look like obvious fakes, so be aware that fakes of this Limited Edition exist.

I discovered this through a sample grab bag from one of my favorite (now defunct) decanters and immediately fell in love. I'm a fan of soft, green fragrances and Green Wheat and Meadowsweet has just enough sweet wheatiness to make it stand out from my collection of greens. The longevity really surprised me as well - I still caught whiffs on my clothes hours after spraying this. I hope this makes a return someday, whether through Jo Malone or a dupe elsewhere.

Surprisingly, it actually smells like wheat, porridge, green grass and a bit of cannabis. It also has pleasant citrusy notes and some warm nutty undertones. Lovely!! This fragrance is an absolute gem. I frequently layer it with Poppy & Barley - beautiful combination. Simultaneously fresh and earthy with a slight sweetness

I love this so much. I bought poppy & barley today but I am kind of changing my mind when I smell them again on testpaper as I bought it a bit rush in the afternoon and did not have enough time to let them settle. At first I did like poppy the most when I first smelled them because it is probably the most acceptable one (in other words the most mediocre one) due to its predominant greenery notes which make you think of poppies in fields dancing in breeze rather than wheat smell. Not everyone likes the smell of wheat and it takes time to adapt the odour. Once you get use to it you will love the aroma of wheat since it smells so fresh and clean and warm at the same time. It reminds me of the limited green almond perfume, which I love so much (though I did not buy it as it did not come in a smaller size and it is very unlikely for me to use them up even until the end of the world). But it is not as fresh and sharp as that one. This one, by adding the ingredient of wheat, creates a warm and a bit woody atmosphere that makes you relax and feel comfortable.

Green Wheat and Meadowseet is true to its name, and to the "note from the brand": wearing it, it's very easy indeed to imagine myself among fields of young, green wheat or stalks of grass with some flowers strewn in. The opening especially is almost unsettlingly green, and very sweet in a botanical kind of way: I don't get any grapefruit, just the same kind of startlingly wild, sweet green as in Zoologist's Elephant (although it's a little more "English" and subdued in this one). My favourite part comes when the scent settles down after an hour or so: it loses the wild aspect, and turns into a more comfortable, mellow version of itself. For the next couple of hours, I regularly get lovely whiffs of spring fields - very enjoyable! All in all this is a solid like for me, nothing more and nothing less. I don't think I'll ever need more of it than my little decant, but I'll return to that with pleasure next spring.

Funny that I said I would buy 'a million others before this' in my review below because I got a rare gift of perfume from my significant other today for valentines. This was it and it's actually one of the less cloying of this line and the fresh, greenness is actually a welcome relief. Don't get it twisted I love the milky, sweetened and wheaty texture of many of these but as much as I like them at first they start to get a little hard going after the first hour or so and this doesn't. It's not like they are beasts and last anyway but still. I will definitely wear this, I don't know where I got vetiver from in my initial review? Anyway I like this and I'm noot just saying now to appease the missus.

Very nice and a good mixture of the citrus vetiver of 'normal' fragrances, with hints of this creamy, grain theme of this limited edition line. The opening is sharp with grapefruit transitioning into not entirely green notes, but something a touch warmer. I felt this was the most unisex and borderline masculine of the bunch. Not bad but if I wanted a fresh green fragrance I'd buy a million others before this.

Not as great a scent as the others in the English Fields Collection that I own. The opening spray smelling strongly of grapefruit and green notes and then the green and wheat notes coming together in the dry down with a sharp musk and almost spicy scent. Very masculine and reminds me of Old Spice but a weaker version of it. I still like it but is my least favourite of the collection.

I’m not really sure what meadowsweet and wheat are supposed to smell like, but this fragrance feels like it’s in the same direction as D’Annam’s Harvest Season. Grapefruit combined with a grassy note that’s a bit tea-like, plus a bunch of light floral scents. The top notes are quite fresh

Jo Malone really means what they say when they slap a sticker on a bottle that says 'limited edition'. Limited this English Fields collection most certainly is. I nearly blinked and missed it. Thankfully I purchased a bottle of Oat & Cornflour, (one of my favourites), before it disappeared off the shelves forever. Green Wheat & Meadowsweet is also very pretty. I don't love this fragrance as much as Oat & Cornflour, but I wouldn't be disappointed if a bottle happened to fall in my lap. This fragrance is one green citrus scent that I really enjoy smelling. The top notes are very crisp and green on my skin. I get a pleasant, summery burst of grapefruit and bergamot, almost as refreshing as a jug of chilled water with slices of lemon floating delicately on its surface. The heart is more mellow and soothing with notes of wheat and meadowsweet which captures the concept of an English field beautifully. Calming is the best word I could find to describe this entire line. Had they not been so expensive I would have happily purchased them all. The sales representative at the Jo Malone counter was also telling me that they are designed, (like the rest of the Jo Malone line), to be layered with one another. I tried Green Wheat & Meadowsweet with Oat & Cornflour and I must say that it did create a rather interesting, crisp blend. If you happen to love any fragrances from this English Fields line I would highly recommend purchasing them now before it's too late. Jo Malone really outdid themselves this year with this stunning collection. The longevity and projection of Green Wheat & Meadowsweet also surpasses many fragrances in their permanent line-up. The price is also quite reasonable for what you get.

This was the biggest surprise of the 5. At first I thought "ouch it is challenging!" But you just wait, wait for an hour and your heart will sing. This particular juice reminds me that patience is a virtue! The initial blast of loud green grapefruit/green moves aside and the juice becomes a complex mix of 20% fruit/10% flower/30% green/40% wood unisex heaven. It is so unique and not like anything else I have (I have a lot). More surprisingly is its lasting power. It literally lasts 6 hours at the same concentration (without fading) on me. Many of my EDPs do not last as strongly or long! The "strong" characteristic of this fragrance means you only need a spray or two and it will last a long time. I am glad I did not let my first impression to count it out!

This is fresh at first but leans a little masculine for me. It's very green, a tiny bit nutty and then an hour later, it transforms into something that reminds me of wheat, earth and old spice. I bought this blind, so will have to do some fragrance combining with Basil and Neroli to get through the bottle. It's not my favourite from this line. Primrose & Rye, however, is beautiful. I can see a guy really enjoying this one to be honest. It's not a bad scent, it's just not for me. The projection and lasting power is stronger compared to the softer Primrose & Rye and Honey & Crocus.

Of the English Fields Collection, this is the most commercial and mainstream. It does conjure up feelings of being in a wheat field on an overcast windy day. Natural and light, yet vague and subdued. This has very little impact but not bad if you don't want to feel overly perfumed or wear something everyone will notice. If this were sold as a mid-priced range body spray, I'd like it. As a niche expensive fragrance sold in a tiny little bottle, not so much. If you see it on sale get it, but not worthy of a full price splurge.

This perfume starts out green and sweet. It dries down to warm grainy, a little smoky and nutty perhaps a little vanilla and just a hint of the first notes. The last smell on me after 5 hours or so is milky, nutty with a little grain. I love this perfume! I am always attracted to perfume with vetiver notes and this one has it So different from the sweeter things I usually wear. I see it as a unisex perfume without being too masculine. I want to buy another bottle before they are all gone!!

Really nice! The wheat is present but not in a foody way, more of a soft flour-like texture behind the floral. I don’t get pronounced grapefruit, but there’s a nice suggestion of clean lotion that is probably aided by it. The meadow sweet is a note I don’t recognize, but I do get a sort of tulip/clean spring floral feel with green leaves. Nice!! I like this a lot. Warm, soft, also cool. Such a pity it costs the absolute Earth. I don't think it's worth $350 for a bottle.

A really fun surprise when I first smelled this. It kinda reminds me of the brown loaf of bread at the Cheesecake Factory. Whole wheat sweetened with honey. Similar to @AoiUsagi though, it's a very specific vibe. I could see myself wearing this to bed with like a cozy cotton pajama set, but it doesn't suit my wardrobe and so I will have to pass.

Its fresh opening made it my favorite among the five, for a few minutes. (Overall, I prefer Poppy Barley which has the lowest rating so far and Honey Crocus.) But it loses its freshness quickly. I get grass, smoky wheat, tea leaves, incense, woods. A sliver of lemon in drydown. Too masculine for me. Long lasting for a Jo Malone.

So beautiful. It's very confortable and cozy. Starts with a dry aura, and the wheat makes it so unique. Kind of a rich old brother of Jeaux de Peau. On my skin it lasts all day long. It would be wonderful to have this as a regular collection.

i really enjoyed the initial scent of this- the green and wheat notes reminded of iced hojicha or barley tea. The smell it settled into was a little cloying masculine for me though (weirdly like a lot of scents in this collection?).

Green, fresh and somewhat manly. It had some nice facets to it but generally not a very enjoyable scent. Overall I'm reminded of many other scents made for men, and sadly don't get anything special from this one.

This was my (least favourite) even all of them are beautiful, this is very strong in the citrus more masculine and less feminine of all the range, completely unique nothing like this on the market.
