Mallow on the Moor

On initial spray this is a slightly green Insolence. After about an hour, with Insolence on one wrist and Mallow on the other, they smell identical. My bottle of Insolence is the bee bottle and it's the edp, and it's ever so slightly dusty compared to Mallow. Because on the dry down they are basically the same, I don't think you need both. I only bought Mallow because I tried it in store and made the mistake of purchasing without wearing it for a few hours and seeing what the dry down would be like. It's not bad. I quite like it. It's just not necessary if you already have Insolence.

This is a feminine perfume and I'm a man but damnit, this smells so good. It smells like the best bubble bath you can imagine. So relaxing and has pretty good longevity. I'm not sure what is giving me this bubble bath soapy vibe, but if you're looking for something in this genre, I highly recommend you look at this instead of Maison Martin Margiela Bubble bath. Scent 8.8/10 Performance 7/10

Opened with a beautiful violet leaves scent then a sweetish dessert-like scent followed. Heliotrope came in for the finale. This was the first of the collection I tried and immediately fell in love with. It lasted about six hours on skin and well over five days on clothing. A very fascinating record for JML fragrance isn’t it? This certainly reminds me of Joop! Homme.

Gorgeous powdery feminine scent in a just as pretty hand-painted bottle. I wish this wasn’t limited edition, but thankfully the gray market has a lot of this collection available. I like to layer this with other Jo Malone scents to add more orris and violet. Not mature, just like a comfortable baby powder mixed with fresh air out in a field in Scotland.

To me, this is a musky, powdery, marshmallow-y mix that smells like a warm, comforting hug on a cold sweater-weather day. Sits a bit close to the skin but lasts for hours! Out of all the Jo Malone bottles that I have, this one lasts on me the longest.

To me this is a close dupe of Love Chloe, which is discontinued and one of my favorites. Longevity is decent for a Jo Malone scent too.

I somehow managed to stumble upon Mallow on the Moor at my local department store. Last time I went the whole Highlands Collection was out of stock. But there it was: Just sitting there on the shelf, waiting for me. So I got it, and now I'm not sure what to think... It's a powder bomb for sure. And it goes too much - too much - too much - just right - faint. Sillage is great, if that's what you are looking for (not sure I am - not with this). Reminds me of Love by Chloé, which I owned decades ago. Not that it is an exact match. It's just the only powdery fragrance I've had in my wardrobe. Perhaps it's about time I got another? It really does smell quite nice. But it is not what I expected from a Highland inspired fragrance. I think perhaps I was expecting something... herbal? Botanical? Green?

Like Insolence’s more reserved sister; slightly lighter/fresher but almost identical, worth trying if Insolence is too heavy for you but not worth owning both.

Sweet and powdery with notes of violet, very pleasant but not my favourite from the collection.

Honestly, I don’t know what to do with this one — and that’s exactly why it’s fascinating. The very first spray hits with this violet + ozonic wave that’s almost disorienting. It’s powerful, airy, a little powdery, and very purple. Not floral‐purple... more like atmospheric‐purple. It’s a combination my nose isn’t used to, and I kept catching myself thinking, “I don’t know how I feel about this... but I’m probably going to be obsessed in a year.” That’s exactly what happened with Fig & Lotus Flower, and the déjà vu is real. There’s something about this fragrance that refuses to fit neatly into a box. One moment it feels like an evening scent, the next it leans a little vintage, and then suddenly it’s so modern and distinct that I wonder if my nose just needs time to adjust to the blend — and then I’ll crave it. As it wears, the confusion softens into curiosity. The dry‐down lingers in this soft, powdery, marshmallow (but not sweet) haze that feels like walking through a purple‐flowered moor at dusk. It’s not sweet, not floral in the traditional sense, not aquatic in the usual way — just this drifting, heavy atmospheric “purple air” that clings to the skin. I’m still puzzled, still sniffing my wrist, still trying to decide if I like it. But the truth is: the fact that I can’t pin it down might be the very reason I end up loving it.

this smells a lot like those pixi stick candies to me. powdery and sweet, it doesn’t last very long. this is a 6/10 for me.

I personally haven’t come across scents like this often. I can see why some would like it, but to me it’s just soap (reminds me a bit of Maison Margiela’s REPLICA Bubble Bath); a nice old grandma’s home with yellow, floral print wallpaper; and her bathroom candle wax. The powdery-ness is in your face. Oh so strong. If I were to rank the Highlands collection subjectively on a scale from worst to best, it would look like the following (again, FOR ME PERSONALLY): MoM HH WA MT |_______|_____________|__|

Jo Malone’s Mallow on the Moors is a fragrance I hoped might smell a little haunted. Well. It does...sort of? Not really in the way I was expecting, though. More like a parody from someone who didn't realize they were writing a parody, which some might look at as a little unfortunate for their creation (no one wants to be unintentionally funny, you know?), but hey, it could also be fun, right? Imagine you’re a buttoned-up gothic novelist who’s never even taken a lover, and fate has led you straight into the arms of a rakish lothario, a real Bluebeard type. Imagine swoons, sighs, ghosts, old gothic castles, manor grounds, bodies buried in the poison gardens, dead wives in attics, and all that jazz. And then the camera pans out, and this is a Hammer horror production directed by Anna Biller starring Lana del Rey, and it’s trying real hard to be ethereal and phantasmal and misty moors and mossy castles, but somehow it is all high camp and glinting artifice, real Real Housewives of Manderley energy. As to what it smells like, imagine the luminous violet powder of broken, scattered Guerlain Meteorites and the brassy hairspray, champagne-tossed-in-your-faceness of Tom Ford Jasmine Rouge. Imagine all of that sprayed on Dita von Teese in La Perla clutching a guttering candelabra channeling Frau Blücher.

Dupe for Chloe Love but higher quality. This smells like a combo of three perfumes I tried: on initial spray Tallulah’s Camelia by Shay and Blue for top notes, and Molinard Violette for the sharp green violet note, but it’s less screechy and more tolerable than the latter. And then after a few seconds the drydown of almond milk in Issey Miyake Drop d’Issey is achieved. The notes profile on this page looks like the same pastel colours as the bottle! I am not sure if this was a novel addition to my wardrobe but at least the bottle is pretty for collector’s purposes. Since this has been discontinued, spraying from my 30 ml bottle should feel like a guilty pleasure but this one doesn't really feel all that unique and I can easily replicate the smell by layering other perfumes.

At first spray I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it, as it's more feminine and I'm a guy. I almost ended up buying it but very soon I was glad I didn't; it's just too strong and overpowering (I know, shocking for Jo Malone which is known to have super weak scents), headache inducing sweetness. Maybe it would be a great thing if it was more green and fresh than powdery. By far the strongest cologne Jo Malone has ever produced, I could smell it on my hand even the next day!

Not sure about the opening note. It starts green and really reminds me of Aura by Mugler on me. It's less sour/tart than it in the opening but it weirdly has that slight almost artificial booziness to it with the vanilla like aura. It does settle into a very powdery scent after a bit. Sillage and duration is good though.

This is a lovely greenish violet which is not very sweet and not too powdery. It is also a bit watery and earthy, and definitely leans feminine. Sillage is moderate and longevity is about 5 hours. It is what I hoped Dragonfly would be like if there were more water.

This smells exactly like, and I mean EXACTLY, like dryer sheets. Tide? Bounce? I need to check my laundry area, but it’s one of those. Identical.
