Poppy & Barley

One of my favorite scents I have ever had. Smells of whiskey, milk, diluted stone fruit, a dried flower with small yet sturdy petals. Like a rich, antique grain. It is all tied together by an extremely subtle soapy base note which becomes more prominent the longer you wear the perfume. The florals balance the powder and the grains and milk balance the syrupy alcohol. I do not really smell any citrus, I mostly smell lactonic barley with a light yet distinct floral. And the tiniest bit of musk, somehow, it makes the scent much more human. This perfume smells the way it feels to have someone look at you and tell you so much with their eyes that can't be said with words. The well-dressed kid in your class with a family secret. The business woman who grew up in farm country and never tells anyone where she's from. On the surface it's elegant and restrained, but there is that little bit of milky alcohol scent that implies something more that you will never know. It's like stepping into another person's home: all the smells that are there on purpose (laundry, scented candles, soaps) but also the smells that are naturally created (warm milk, skin on blankets, the dry field outside the open window). You choose what to focus on. It can be either impersonal or intimate. All in all, this is a very put-together scent, unique, in control, and though most rate it as highly feminine, I find it unisex or androgynous in some way. I would be intrigued by someone wearing this if I had never smelled it before. Sadly, I wore it for two or more years so I have to take a break and let it surprise me again some time in the future.

First Jo Malone purchase--was really torn between Red Roses and this. I smelled both in store this summer, so I experienced the recent release, but I purchased English Field collection instead. It's linear like most Jo Malone I've tried: watery, fleeting rose with just a hint of fruitiness. The violet and greens, soft as it may, definitely played their roles in creating the quite convincing poppy fantasy note. The grains make it more grounded, I feel. It's fresh, it's clean, perhaps not groundbreaking but I adore 'cotton' effect. This is definitely my preferred feminine floral fragrance for daily basis. Relaxed outdoor weekends in a bottle. Not much projection but I do catch whiffs of it as I move sometimes, even after four or five hours. On humid days, I can still detect it sitting on my skin after eight to ten hours.

I adore this. It was my second favorite of the 5 but now closing in on being the 1st.... This juice undergoes a very unique transformation - at first a pretty floral that is Dipqyque style, but once settled it becomes mellow and creamy, which turns into a grainy sweetness that I love. I can not stop sniffing it on my wrist throughout the day. This is long lasting - which is a wonderful thing because it is a limited edition and I do not want to run out of it too soon!

Soft rose and soft blackcurrant jam. Very soft, jammy rose. I'm not getting any violet and this does not smell powdery on me. The barley / bran note sits at the bottom of this fragrance and gives it a warm, comforting undertone. This sits on your skin and doesn't project at all. But I get better longevity on it than a lot of Jo Malones. I'd say around 7-12 hours. Soft, rosy, comforting perfume. Perfect for everyday wear, office-safe, and lovely.

A nice, gentle, flowery scent, not overly sweet. Emanates something clean. The poppy is noticeable but not cloying. Not ground breaking but definitely not your usual perfume. My favorite from this collection and as far as I understood the top best-seller form the five limited edition scents. Longevity is nothing to write home about, but it's a lovely summer scent for those who like it different.

Straight from the sprayer I noticed a white musk scent, sweet and floral. Upon spraying I got a blast of fig with the especial sweetness of blackberry added. I'm getting a little of the cereal notes but only because I'm looking for it. It's quite musky from start to finish, very much a girl-next-door, softly sweet scent. It reminds me of some shampoo from the early 2000s.

Poppy & Barley is not as "sharp" as I originally perceived. It just needed some time to warm up. I smell rose and black currant and something slightly powdery but not the cosmetic kind. It's probably the barley. Anyways, it's warm, spring floral leaning more towards the feminine side.

I tried this on my.today, store sprayer its quite lovely, very romantic, mature and beautiful, old world perfumey. A love for me, dry fruity and flowery..not to sweet.

Maybe Fig & Cereal Breakfast fits more to the name. Sweet fig and musk with nutty undertone that stays enough time on my skin. Smells so unique and out there. Love it

Poppy & Barley is another entry in the English Fields collection that's slightly disappointing to me, even though I like it quite a lot. It's just that I had sky-high expectations of this series (a marketing campaign promising an olfactory trip to an idealized version of rural England will do that for me, I guess), and instead of falling in love as I go through my samples, I just find myself steadily liking all of them. They're just not quite as special as I had hoped. Aside from my skewed expectations, though, this one's really very nice: it's that rare bird, a grown-up fruity floral. The opening especially is great, delicately balanced between sweet and tart without either of them becoming too obtrusive; I'm guessing the cassis note plays a big role in this. As it dries down the barley makes its appearance, at least in spirit: the scent becomes more powdery in a non-sweet way, more like flour than anything else. This complements the fruity-floral aspect very nicely, but by this stage the fragrance's retreated so close to the skin that I find myself forgetting I'm even wearing it, for the most part. All in all it's a good scent, but not a great one, and that means I'll leave it behind without any regrets once my little decant is gone. Too bad, I'll have to keep looking for that really dreamy scented evocation of the English fields in my imagination...

The staff told me that this is the most popular one among the wheat collection so I chose this one as there was only one left and I may not be able to buy it later. However this is not the most unique one among them. If I have some more time to smell it, feel it and choose it, I may not go for this one. Yes, it is very good-smelling, it is very popular. But usually popularity means typicality and ordinariness which are not the elements of a 'good', 'successful' and revolutionary fragrance albeit its smash hit in the market. Its opens with obvious green notes, which are said to be created as the poppy scent, and the smell of barley is not as strong as its fellows. Rather there is an intensive violet note when the opening settles. I like the scent. It is really like poppies dancing in the wind, an image created by the greenery notes, but there is nothing to do with wheat in the picture. Instead of poppy & barley I would recommend you to try green wheat & meadowsweet, oat & cornflower and primrose for a stronger wheat scent. They do smell like wheat and depict a view of English field. I'd probably buy one more with a stronger wheat smell as it is more special compared to other fragrances.

Simply a fruity floral with a somewhat earthy powdery dry down that smells fresh, clean yet somewhat grainy in the way it exudes off your skin. lasts at most 5 hours with a very soft close to skin silage, not one to wear for compliments but merely one i wear on hot days when i am just lazing around or going for a quick trip to a store and want to smell good and clean without smelling too unique or power projecting. overall rating is a 6 out of 10 for me, as its quite a nice scent that does not impose and serves its purpose for me on the moments i need it.

Tried it for third time. I now get the powder that Ms. Cherie mentioned. Not a powder fan but here I don't mind it- almost like it with the gauze-y linen and the dry toasted grains. This smells good with Basil Neroii. Daxx! Now I am toying the idea of getting FB of both Poppy Barley and Basil Neroli. But let me remind myself I didn't want to get sucked into buying a $70 bottle of 30ml Jo Malone again.

This is my favorite among the five in the Collection. It is also the least ground breaking (and has the lowest rating so far). Red rose with grains and wheats, in a linen dress. Oh the creator was going for cotton? Okay, a late-spring cotton-linen dress. It should be very pretty comes warmer weather. Leans a bit on feminine. I also like Honey Crocus in this line.

Within my limited experience of powdery-forward fragrances, so far, this is one of the only ones I like. Although it leans slightly feminine, my husband enjoys using this one as well. The scent isn't anything extraordinary as there are similar ones in the market, so it does seem like a safer option.

I like it, even tough I don't love it. To me, it smells like a sophisticated, more tender version of flower by kenzo. It's pretty but I prefer other scents from the collection, wich appealed to me because - in contrary to this scent - I found them more extraordenary.

Based on initial notes and description this one was my favorite from the collection but totally failed me. It is unbearable, headache inducing.

aesthetic: #bucolic #cottagecore #countryside #freedom #hope It's a really smooth, tender, dainty and sophisticated creation. The pale early morning sunsine abive the wind blown, devy light green and beige colored fields. It's really similar to Jo Malone Scarlet Poppy, but this is a bit more dewy and light, wet green toned and slightly(!) 'sharper'. But it also strongly contains from scarlet poppy dna: that mild lactonic softness and silkiness of cream and beige colored fields with that 'fruity, popping red ' which paints dainty poppies between the wheats onto my inner eyelid.

Initial impression: this is a fresh barbershop-type scent. I have a bottle of it, but so far I have not been able to pull it off. It's not a bad smell, but it reads too masculine for my liking. On the other hand, I've had several female strangers compliment me on it. Every single one of them said it was "very clean". I was standing in line at Starbucks and the lady behind me asked me what I was wearing, and even took the time to write it down to purchase it for herself. I hope she has better luck with it than I did.

This is lovely! At first sniff it is like a fresh watery rose scent, so nice !! It doesn't open up much, I don't detect woods, or barley..it remains on me a soft floral...so pleasant, easy to wear, and feminine...i might get a bottle, as this is so lovely and fresh..it has in the drydown that warm aura, I really like this..thank you Miss Cherie for the decant !! Update: I like it, but won't buy a bottle...it is a bit light, and in the end not the most distinctive perfume

Very natural, fresh and transparent scent, all notes are blended well together. It has good longevity for such a subtle type of fragrance. Ideal for spring, and for me it is strongly associated with the London countryside. For those who want more depth and sillage, I would recommend to try other perfumes from English fields line, because this one is the lightest and the most inoffensive in it.

I understand Mathilde's comments ... the era of judging a fragrance by sillage and longevity is passing. Today's fragrances have a sensitive delicacy that is more intimate. I love her image of tall poppies in the barley field. So English, so courageous ... A fragrance for your sense of self, with a modesty aching to be discovered. Thank you for this gift.

Probably the most approachable of the English Fields Collection, probably because it smells the least like a grain or cereal. In fact, I can only smell a very soft, slightly powdery floral. A heavy hand of violet with some sweetness from black currant. Nothing revolutionary, just inoffensively nice.

I like this! I get super green violet, reminding me a lot of Novaya Zarya's Red Poppy, spritzy green leaves, some bright citrus. I don’t get the grain notes at all: it’s primarily violet on me. But I like it a lot!

I don’t understand what rose people smell here and I cannot understand comparison with baccarat rouge (rose scent) it doesn’t have one And “poppy is noticeable ” how? That flower doesn’t have scent!
