But while those fragrances can lean more heavily into floral or soapy territory, Artisan Pure feels more grounded and organic, like walking through a citrus grove with a cool breeze in the background. I bought an 8ml sample of this via FragranceNet, and I've already secured a full sized bottle of this... After the number of wears I've had, I’d say that this is definitely blind buy worthy for those looking for a cheapie that smells elevated, and deviates away from your typical citrus-blue-floral at this price tier. Surprisingly, with the full bottle, I did have to let this macerate for about 1-2 weeks before wearing. Out of the box, it smelled completely different than the tester that I went through but it settled after some time. I’m a huge fan of the John Varvatos house. I live in Southern California and the brand just vibes here. So when I saw this interesting looking bottle of artisan pure for $40 on fragnet, I thought, hell, it’s JV, I’ll blind buy a bottle. Ohhh boy.... If I had smelled this at macys I would have immediately passed on this, not even giving a thought to sprits it on my skin to see how it settles. The citrus notes bitch slaps like Rick James in the 80’s. I could not get over it. But I had a whole bottle...fug it, let’s wear this, it’s 105° out, at least this is light. This is where this frag took a turn After about 10 minutes, the top notes faded and what was left was this dry, musky, beach sandy scent that was so goddamn enjoyable, I went straight to the store to buy steak cause the scent got me into a pool party mood. I doused myself, sat next to the water and enjoyed the scent of my carne asada grilling and me smelling like summer vacation. What I thought was a huge mistake on my first blind buy is truly becoming my “go-to” or my “relax at home” or “can’t decide” fragrance of my collection. At least for summer especially during these heat waves. This is the best fragrance purchase I’ve ever made, not because this scent is particularly amazing, but because I learned to change my expectations and first impressions of other fragrances. I learned to always buy decants from now on, you just have to wear fragrances for a day or 2 to really gauge the time, place, etc of what colognes can really bring. I have grown to absolutely love this scent, not just because of the way it smells, but because of the mood it puts me in. Edit: experimented with my first layering, this slaps with D&G light blue, 4:1 ratio because Light blue is strong.

So. Time to bust some myths. 1. It's not linear. It starts very green - bergamot based marjojram and thyme is very apparent and on my skin are gone in 15-30 in minutes. Tle citrus/clementine Vibe stays for another 3 hours tops, then it becomes fresh, musky, woodsy masculine skin scent. 2. It's not that bad with performance - it's the sprayer that is shit. It produces like a tiny turberculoid man breath each time you spray, almost no juice - that's why people don't get performance. For a citrus it's completely normal. It's a shit sprayer edt, use more juice people. I'm both positively and negatively surprised about the quality. The collar of the sprayer has the name of the fragrance facing to the side, it's not centered. It's very crooked. The sprayer is shit - distribution is nice, just tiny. You need to spray a lot. The cap is wooden - which is nice, it's just it's the lightest wood I ever had between my fingers. It's lighter than plastic. It slides on, no click, it's friction-based. But the design is nice overall, and the 'basket' thing is natural, not plastic, the bottle is frosted. Repair the sprayer, center the collar and make a better cap - otherwise it's a very nice citrus scent. Summer, heat, daytime. 5-7 (depending on skin chemistry, sweating and temperature). @edit - I centered the collar myself 🙃

I got both the original Artisan and Artisan Pure in order to compare them. Scent-wise, I loved both. The citrusy notes are absolutely off the charts. There’s only a mild difference between the two. To my nose, the OG Artisan is slightly brighter and fresher, while Artisan Pure leans more into the soapy and powdery side. I preferred the original scent slightly more, but both genuinely amazed me. When it comes to projection, there are significant improvements. I sprayed the same amount of each fragrance, and the newer flanker definitely radiates more and lasts longer on my skin. The performance improved from weak to moderate, which is honestly very solid for a citrus fragrance, considering citrus molecules always try to leave the party early. Also, it’s impossible not to mention the bottle design. It’s a piece of art on its own. It feels luxurious and looks like a great gift. Nice scent that’s unique and hard to dislike — check, good packaging — check, affordable price — check. To me, the Artisan line represents niche-quality perfumery with an affordable price tag. Overall, it’s a big step up from the original version. John Varvatos did a great job improving the flaws of the OG Artisan.

I ordered a sample of this for no reason, just to reach the free shipping limit, I even procrastinating testing it for a few days. I honestly expected a generic, male scent like a head and shoulders shampoo. I expected nothing, and instead was met with everything I love in a fresh citrus perfume. To me, it's citrus blended with woodiness. Bitter citrus peels, mainly a fresh, juicy, lemon. Not sharp or burning and does not remind of cleaning products. The blast of citrus is strong until it settles in a few minutes and the woody base and herbs become a more prominent. I honestly smell aromatic vetiver and just a little bit of thyme. It's unisex in my opinion, fresh, aromatic goodness for everyone. Office friendly for sure. However, the silage could be a problem, it's the only thing making be hesitate to buy a full bottle. It's a skin scent basically. It does last for hours but it does not project. I will buy a bottle when I become rich enough lol.

Very refreshing and hard to dislike (unless you don't like citruses). It reminds me of a more mature and masculine CK one, like if you took Nio and CK one and mixed them; it doesn't have the sharpness of Nio but does have sharpness and it doesn't have the florals of CK one but does have some florals. The part that surprised me was the musky dry down which is like a woody musk almost to the point it smells a little like caraway or cumin. Another thing that surprised me was the projection, after hearing much about performance issues (mostly longevity, but also projection), I was thrown off when it projected really well from my skin for an hour +. Not sure if it's a new batch thing, but from first wearing I'm getting decent performance (for a freshie). Overall I think this is one of the best price to quality ratios for a fragrance when it comes to freshies and I am happy I finally picked it up.

Artisan Pure is a citrus, herbal and musky fragrance. Its opening is fresh, sparkling and citrusy, slightly synthetic, which quickly transitions to a citrusy, spicy herbal sensation that is very pleasant and easy to wear. Once it reaches its drying phase, a musky and woody base is perceived, but the citrus always remains. This fragrance is undoubtedly for daytime use, in hot seasons like spring and summer, I like it to start the day with energy and that feeling of cheerful freshness. Its longevity wasn't bad at all, I expected it to last less, but at least it stayed with me for almost 8 hours. and its aromatic sillage is a little strange, because sometimes it seems like it has already disappeared and suddenly I get bursts of the smell. I bought a travel version that is 17 ml, for now I will continue using it, then I will think about whether to buy a larger bottle, for now I will enjoy it.

John Varvatos Pure Artisan. I love this scent profile. Every time I wear this, I feel energized—mostly due to its beautiful blend of ginger and citrus. There’s an earthy moss in the background that balances it out nicely. It feels like a perfect summer scent—versatile, soothing, and mass-appealing. You can wear it in formal and casual settings, even to the gym. But sadly, the performance is awful. In heat, it barely survives—around 1 to 1.5 hours at best. After that, it becomes a skin scent. Clothes can carry it a bit longer. The sillage is intimate, not really projecting. Overall, it just vanishes in the heat. If you stay indoors or in AC, then you're okay. Ironically, it might perform better in fall or winter, or in night even though it's a daytime perfume. Even though it’s my favorite cheapie, it saddens me every time i put it on due to its poor performance.

It is one of my favorite scents for summer days. Bright, clean, and stylish. It opens with a blast of citrus that feels crisp and energizing, then softens into this unique mix of ginger, herbal notes. The dry down brings in light woods, giving it a clean, masculine base. It’s fresh without being too common. Mature, breezy, and perfect for hot, humid days when most fragrances feel too heavy. I love wearing it with a white linen shirt and jeans. It just fits the vibe. The perfumer behind it is Rodrigo Flores-Roux, who also created Houbigant Fougere Royale and Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, so that gives you an idea of the quality and style you're getting. Longevity is average, but it’s so pleasant and office-safe that I don’t mind respraying. Sometimes I layer it with Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme and that combo really lifts my mood.

John Varvatos Artisan Pure Longevity:7.5/10 Silage:7/10 Scent Profile: 8.9/10 First off, the bottle looks and feels like a 2d PNG image of a high quality easter basket. One of the best bottles in my collection, so bonus points for that. Anyways, the longevity and silage are ok, nothing special, but the scent profile is pretty good. It starts off mandarin heavy, almost sweet, before transitioning into a lemon tree mandarin ginger scent with herbal undertones, before unveiling an herbal but earthy finish that I was not expecting at all. Kind of similar to Sospiro Vibrato's finish. This is a deep, luxury scented fragrance at a good price point, and I could see myself wearing this every now and then, despite performance issues. 8.6/10

I’m in love with this cheap banger. Clean, fresh, airy. If this had a LV label it would sell for 350 with imagination, in fact it shares aspects of imagination. Imagination is an all time favorite for me and this competes with it. I blind bought this based on a Kevin Samuels review from a while back, and I trust his nose, owning a few of the ones he would preach about, RIP. Anyways, this is the definition of a dumb reach. This scent would prosper 60° F and above, and preferably with the sun out. This smells just like being at a Mexico or Dominican Republic all inclusive beach resort, while wearing sunscreen. Fragrances like this remind me that good juice is cheap, the label, brand, and exclusivity are what you pay big bucks for.

One of the most magical openings of a fresh citrus scent ever, for me its niche quality. Yes, its synthetic but smells natural - a high quality blend, masterfully done. I don't know Xalapa but do know Amalfi Coast and Italian citrus groves and this is what this makes me smell and feel like - citrusy, clementine, ginger heaven with a masculine woody dry down finish. Fantastic alternative to the popular sweet/blue boy summer scents. Highly versatile, I wear it to the office occasionally but it's best in the sun (weekend/outdoor, beach etc). Longevity ab. 6 hrs, 3 hrs projection but gives a nice sillage bubble and pleasant whiffs. Different, unique and definitely one of my favourite scents. Worth consideration .

I love neroli, petitgrain and citrus fragrances. Have quite a few in my collection. This is definitely a unique scent amongst them all. It's fresh and clean, but sexy, modern, and youthful. I have to be careful where I wear this juice because I don't always want to smell that attractive in a professional setting, rather just clean. Would make a great day-date or vacation scent in the spring and summer. With juice like this, I'm not really concerned about performance as I always decant and respray when I feel the need. It's cheap on discounters, so spray away. Nice presentation too. Cap looks cool, but it fits a bit loose compared to their metal caps. 10/10 would bang again.

This is funny fragrance for me because my wife goes bonkers when I wear it but I don’t typically like this style. Artisan Pure is a dry, almost parched neroli and cedar fragrance. And it does that act extremely well when you consider the price. The cedar base is what sets this apart from most rivals. I own Xerjoff’s Renaissance and AP has a better cedar note than the Xerjoff. AP is an evocative fragrance that makes me think of route 1 along the California coast with the sun baking the cedar tress and herbs of the gardens. Once we get into the 90’s I pretty much wear this daily and though this style is not my favorite, it gives me pleasure to know my wife loves it.

This might the best JV fragrance so far. It starts with sharp sweet and bitter citruses but after a few minutes it develops into this Zen-like almost airy vibe that reminds me a bit to Imagination from LV. It's basically a citrusy-airy-musky fragrance and the smell is very addicting. As with many JV fragrances this one has weak sillage, it last about 5-6 hours on me, mostly skin scent but is safe to overspray as the smell is very inoffensive. Definitely worth it to have in your collection, I got a bottle for like $35 at Jomashop. I got this several months ago and just didn't like it. Tried it twice and put it away. Smelled rindy and synthetic to me. Now I love it. Not sure if the scent changed or I just perceive it differently but it's such a clean fresh citrus scent. I have a lot of fragrances and none of them smell like this at all. Glad I gave it another chance. Will be wearing this as my daytime fragrance for the rest of the summer. I need to spray this on thick. Atomizer doesn't put out a lot of juice also. It seems that this smell is a skin scent 3 hours in yet I passed someone about 6 hours in and he knew I was wearing. I think I might be a little nose blind to this.

Fragrance Journal Entry #54 This is easily the best John Varvatos fragrance and if you're debating picking this up..just do it. This fragrance as a mental image is beachside in a fold out chair planted firmly in the sand, shades on, sunscreen lightly applied, sipping on an iced cold lemonade with a little umbrella on the glass rim and some herbal garnish. Crisp, refreshing and quite possibly the best 90°+ hot weather fragrance at this price point. The quality is phenomenal despite the poor performance, spray heavy and enjoy! As a side note this smells nothing like Xerjoff Nio, thankfully. Rating: 8.6/10 Blind Buy Safe? YES

This is the type of fragrance that I borderline hated right when I first smelled it but it immediately started to get better. The first blast is filled with clementine/Mandarine orange. After like 15 seconds it dries down to my least favorite part. I think the petitgrain takes over and it is not an amazing smell. But then right when you think you wasted your money... it turned into a woodsy aromatic citric dry down that is stunning. For the 38 dollars I paid for it is is a deal. This doesn’t really matter but the bottle looks great and it really does a good job matching the fragrance, the color white vibe

Fantastic take on a budget friendly citrus fragrance. It doesn't come off as your average citrus fragrance at all. It has this nice bitter scent with a hit of ginger. It's very refreshing and the sillage is very pleasant. It doesn't have the best performance but as I walk around, I still get these hits from it from time to time to remind me it's there. I easily get 4h on average so I use it for the gym or just a dumb reach for every day things. Since it's a cheapy, it won't hurt you to reapply. GREAT for layering as well. You can literally get 125ml for like 40usd on discounters online, great deal!

People on here need to dial back their expectations of what a citrus fragrance ought to acheive. Artisan Pure is an amazing, inexpensive and very natural smelling "cologne" type fragrance. I wear it fresh out of the shower- spray numerous times - go tho the gym or running errands. Lasts longer and performs better than what people on here are saying. Spray more and spray more often - problem solved!! - It's inexpensive. I went ahead and bought the Artisan Blu blind because I'm absolutely impressed with Pure. Cost, beautiful bottle design, quality of the scent- hard to find anything negative here.

This stuff is amazing! I have a lot of fragrances - designers as well as niche but none of the captivated me like this one. Its not groundbreaking but immediately upon smelling it, it took me to a nostalgic place and gave me an unimaginable comfort. i love it but sadly after and hour i couldnt smell it anymore. My friend said he smells it but i couldnt and it also has a weak projection. If you planning to buy, dont hesitate but you have to like citrusbecause this is a citrus bomb. 9/10 for me - it would be a complete 10 if longevity was up to par.

Too synthetic, too herbally smells, you'll like this one at first, very impressive, very unique, you'll buy this one like me. but then once the honeymoon is over you'll feel it is very offensive, bitter and annoying, the bottle has been collecting dust for 6 years. Recently I got my nose on LV Afternoon Swim and it is a very elegant, naturally uplifting smelling orange, and by finding it my search for the best citrus scent is over. If you don't want to spend too much, Paris Corner North stag expression 4 Quattre is very close and much cheaper.

This fragrance is so beautiful and one of my absolute favorites. It’s a blast of lively citrus, particularly orange, that smells like it’s straight from an actual orange garden. It also has a creamy white floral and slightly powdery iris scent, which makes it even more gorgeous and adds to the airy nature. It’s complex yet mostly linear from opening to dry down. It is easy to get nose blind, but this does last, especially if layered with a musky scent or in high heat.... It really comes most to life under these conditions.

Finally added this to my collection recently, after all these years. When I first sprayed it it was ok, nothing too special.. but the more it stayed on my skin, the more I found myself sniffing my arm. There's something very addictive in the drydown, can't explain it. Haven't felt like this about a new fragrance for a while (new to my collection, that is). Projection wasn't super good, but I could still easily detect it 6-7 hours later and got some whiffs, so the longevity is pretty good. I'm glad I finally bought this.

Suitable for any occasion, from a quiet evening at home with friends to a formal night out on the town. Classy, yet not presumptuous. Refined, yet not stuffy. Brilliant in its accessibility and being easy to wear, Artisan Pure is in a class of one.

Smells like a high quality bar of soap, very clean citrusy in the vein of fragrances like neroli portofino or dolce Gabbana pour homme, maybe even ck all, very pleasant, has a Mediterranean or tuscan vibe to it. It is weak unfortunately but most varvatos frags suffer from this ailment, though overspraying on clothes should help with that. If found at discounters or plenty below retail, it is easily recommendable. Scent: 7.5/10 Longevity and projection: 5/10 Personal score: 8/10

For me this was a blind buy in my collection, overall I don't really like fresh fragrances. (but in summerheat I need them..) But wow! This one is actually really good! I also have Issey Miyake's "l'eau d'issey" to compare and I think I like this one even more, it also has some really good projection/sillage and even longevity (for a citrus edt!) Opening is very citrusy and after an hour it starts to become sweet.(I really like sweet) So for a citrus scent I give this an 9/10

Citrusy, woody, herbaceous and floral. It has a bright neroli-like smell, without actually smelling like neroli. I can see the comparison between this and Neroli Portofino (which smells like refined 4711) This gives the vibe of a stylish man in the summertime, playing tennis. Or an attractive man in a white linen shirt and sunglasses walking down the street in Beverly Hills. A true gem that smells at least twice as expensive as it actually is.

Very fresh orange, lemony type of shower gel. It's smooth, very amazing price it was like 30$ for 125 ml. Honestly might be my gym scent from now on, it's amazing not only for that but for the office or in general warm weather. Bottle does feel kind of cheap but at least it looks cool, atomizer not that big of a problem as others say, should definitely be in your collection as a freshie. Can't wait to try the other stuff Varvatos has to offer

imagine you're on the balcony with orange trees of the fancy hotel laying on the clean and creespy bad cover contemplate picturesque scenery of the ocean. and enjoing the freshness of the air. It's summer and you're in the middle of your divine vacation. The scent is very unique and invigorating. Longevity is not so bad for citrusy scent. Sillage more a skin scent which very pleasant and doesn't irritate yourself during hot summer.

I have to say the hype is real witrh this one. I love it. It smells exactly how the name says and how the bottle looks. If white and pureness had a scent it would be this. It is a citrus bomb that's why it reminds me of a very refreshing lemonade on a hot summer day. The herbal aspect can be offputting, it pust me of fas well the first time but after you get used to it it is soooo good. Absoulutely love it.

I have had two bottles of this beautiful juice, and I will buy another. I'm not into spotting individual ingredients, but this is a fabulous and totally different fresh fragrance. I smelt it once and had to go back and buy a bottle immediately, and it's also the only frag other than Aventus back in 2010 that a male friend has made me tell them where to buy it as they had the same reaction to this. I’m really impressed! This is not what I think of as a citrus scent, it’s more herbal aromatic to me. I actually tried it to take the piss, thinking it would be generic and pungent. Sniffed the nozzle and said “I’m buying this. I can Afterpay $60 no problem”. Put it on this morning and I’m loving it! I expected an Issey Miyake knock off, but I got something I’ve never encountered before. Well done JV

This is an orange garden in a bottle! Smells sooo relaxing. Very light and inoffensive scent to wear when it's boiling hot. The only downside is that it's not long-lasting and doesn't project very well. Well, everything has its downsides, right? One should definitely try this if you like citrusy, fresh fragrances. Oh, I almost forgot to say, it's dirt cheap everywhere too, easy to reach.

Didn't like at first sniff just because of how different the opening is to anything I've ever smelt.. Sharp herbal citrus on top. After a few wears I've fallen in love with how this wears and how much it stands out from all the freshies and typical summer frags I've worn. Dry down smells almost nostalgic, something akin to a fresh opened bag of froot loops lol. Absolutely gorgeous scent.

For the first minute or so, it doesn't seem to be a pleasant citrus scent. After a while, it becomes soft and gives off a clean, luxurious, and comfortable scent. I thought the scent didn't last long, but when I couldn't smell it, other people could. Spray it on your clothes about 5 times 30 minutes before going out. Then, the soft, pleasant scent stays on your clothes for a long time.

I love this fragrance and it’s perfect for summer! It has a refreshing feeling made to be worn out in the sun. I picture myself at the beach in a loose, white, airy button-up shirt. The clean citrus and musk are just wonderful. The only thing is, it doesn’t last very long on me. I’m always having to reapply or spray it on my clothes, which seems to help make it last a bit longer.

Helluva fantastic fragrance. Much closer in construction to TFNP than to Nio. For the price, which is very, very good, buy three of the 4.2oz bottles. That is about how much you'll need for a summer season worth of daily wearing. Yes, performance is pretty poor. You'll be lucky to get an hour or two. But at this price, who the hell cares.

Fresh lemon and orange citrus opening. The citrus opening smell natural going into middle and base note. After 1 hour opens into middle note that smell like lemongrass and ginger. Drydown at about 2 hours into citrus woody note on the base. Total longevity at about 4 hours. Sillage and projection sit closer to skin. Great for summer days.

It's fresh and citrucy but what I really love in it is how dry and bitter it is, so different from other springsummer daywear scents. It's kinda like oldschool aromatics but it doesn't smell oldschool at all. I find it a nice change of pace when i have a mood for it. Also, bottle looks and feels gorgeous, but the sprayer is dog ass.

Perfectly balanced bitterness. Very citrusy, bergamot and orange being most prevalent, and ever so slight powderiness and musk, although they really only serve as a pedestal and base for the citrus, very minimal. Pretty linear in my opinion, however the airiness really makes the difference here. Unfortunately doesnt last or project.

comparing this to jv artisan. both smell different, this one is louder and the other more pleasant. this one is bitter while the latter more citrus. artisan pure dries down to woody while artisan dries down to spice (ginger). overall this one comes off to be unisex unlike jv artisan. this smells better than jv artisan.
