Nectary

Nectary is a rose oud that really tries to do something different for the genre. One way to think of it is as a “deconstructed” rose oud, where the individual facets/notes of rose and oud are clearly and obviously separated but allowed to overlap in parts to make a lightbulb go off in your mind - rose oud...? Another way to think of Nectary, and I believe it to be a more accurate way, is the overlaying of full accords to create a Venn diagram where at the center is rose and oud. The cranberry and peach in the opening are vivid and photorealistic. They act in two different ways, the first being a beautiful evocations of oud’s fruity medicinal facet thanks to the waxy and slightly chemically character of cranberry, while secondarily the peach works in tandem with the cranberry to pull forward the fruity facets that are a part of a rose accord. The castoreum, labdanum, and civet are already reaching up from the heart to bring out oud's woods and animalics with subtle touches of leather, sticky resinous woody notes, and a sweet flora-fecal quality. The Venn layout is working quite well, but where it goes a tad bit awry in the beginning is with the rose accord. The rose remains a bit too fruity, and a bit too gelatinous to be convincing of an actual rose. The Venn diagram doesn’t center all that well, and favors inputs that make the rose smell a bit jammy and cosmetic. These do not take that long to dry down, where the gelatinous fruity aspects fall away to let green stems, ambergris, and a little bit of frankincense pull the rose back into the garden of reality and gentrify the oud. The final skin scent retains the fruity rose sitting on a bed of gray musks. Are there any actual rose or oud materials to this perfume? Yes, the brand says that there are and I have no cause to doubt them, but the interpretative statement that this perfume is not intended to be a simple presentation of an oud material and a rose material is definite. I’m convinced. This is one of the more unique handlings of the rose oud combo I have smelled in quite a while. Very nice work.

Let me start by saying: I love rose fragrances. If a perfume features a prominent rose note, there’s a good chance I’ll at least not dislike it. But not every rose scent makes my heart leap with delight. Nectary by Jorum Studio does exactly that. I discovered it during a trip to Edinburgh in their shop and was instantly smitten. It opens with a fruity rose surrounded by juicy cranberries and a hint of peach. The rose is prominent - sweet, but not sugary. Right from the start, though, you sense that there’s more lurking behind the floral-fruity top notes. Something animalic, something deep. A triple animalic combination of castoreum, civet, and musk emerges, surprisingly not “gamey” at all. Instead, it gives the otherwise innocent opening a cuddly warmth, making the rose feel like it melds harmoniously with the skin, rather than simply sitting atop it. In contrast to this warm, animalic rose, another favorite of mine is Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle, which I’d describe as a cold, dark rose. Both are unusual in their own way, both a bit daring, but Nectary stands out with its warmth and depth. I’m absolutely obsessed with this perfume! It’s probably the most beautiful warm rose scent I’ve ever encountered. The combination of rose, fruit, and animalic elements is unique and executed brilliantly.

Rose, Civet, Oud, Castoreum, Musk and Peach smack you in the face on first blast - and a blast it is, for Nectary is not a shy and retiring type. She is loud and proud and in your face, until she shusshes down just a touch, to allow a literal nectar of rose and powdery undertone to creep to the front. She is still talking quite loudly, but you have to be within earshot. She's not going to shout across the room again, as she did when she first arrived. On my long hair, she sits for days between washes, and whenever I catch her again, I'm sat inside a lush glass summer house, surrounded by orange and red blooms, dripping with nectar, while small monkeys swing from the rooftops and couples meet for illicit times. God this is ADDICTIVE. Not to be worn when trying to blend in. But if you're blending out, two pops will take you anywhere.

I thought I was enough of rose fragrances. Apparently not, because this one is absolutely gorgeous. 'Beauty & The Beast,’ this is a dominant queen with her Cerberus pet. Boozy, deep, intense, fermented, luscious, burgundy rose. No geranium detected, just an unadulterated queen rose, with a hint of succulent red fruits that add some sparkles. It also has a velvety texture and antique quality to me. Strange that the sweetness I get is more from the animalic accord, instead of the others, supposedly (you know it when you exhale). Nectary feels ‘gothic’ – It is indeed a cliché, but I rarely use the term and do not take it lightly. Definitely going to be my next purchase.

This kind of rose is my absolute favorite. I have no idea how people dont like rose, its got to be one of the best notes in perfumery. This is a piercing, icy rose similar to that of neandertal light and especially ELDO's exit the king and eau de protection. That rose is definitely the main player, but its balanced by the bitterness of the cranberry, the slight oud and musk base, and a vintage twinge from the peach. It doesn't evolve very much because it doesn't really need to, the image of the overgrown garden filled with broken pots and spilled flowers is absolutely on point. I can't really say anything more besides, if you love rose, you HAVE to try this.

What a beauty! I can't pick any particular note, but the combination is smooth, ultra feminine and very elegant. Floral - creamy perfume, truly enchanting. It is not loud but is persistent. Great longevity. I was expecting something difficult, too much 'niche' from the line, but they all are very well made, very wearable and somehow with a twist in their development - all of them keep you involved during the time of wearing.

Not your average or tamed rose scent, this floral-fruit wine medley has a bite and naughty side that takes a little bit of patient aging to fully meld together, but once it does, you're under its seductive animallic spell and there is no turning back or putting this bottle down. The vivid wild picture Nectary paints is one you can't wait to escape to.

A Mapplethorpe floral with a pistil hard-on. Musk and gasoline, a juiced up rose in the teeth and the creak of heavy biker leathers. Animalics that are a purr underneath delicacy. Superb. Makes me huff my own skin like a chromer. Sillage is significant. Wear to art openings, dinners with a stocking foot to the crotch, or drunk in a trusted bar. 9.5/10

Whenever I revisit this I am reminded why I bought it. There is such a dirty depth to this that takes it much further than other rose oud combinations. Not for the faint of heart, but once on skin it is undeniably magnetic. Warm, syrupy rose wrapped in smoky musks and woods. Seriously a masterpiece from this house.

This is a dewy, dirty, fruity floral of the highest order. I normally stay away from animalic notes and oud, which are frequently overdone. In this composition, everything--rose, berries, ambergris, oud, animalic musks--are balanced to perfection. I'm swooning! It's pure, unadulterated "nature in a bottle."

Very similar to POAL but I prefer this. I feel like the only person who doesn't find POAL that good. This does the same thing but without the relentless, droning basenotes. As a result, this one has less push, but that's not a bad thing, I find POAL obnoxious and overbearing.

We all know where we were the first time we heard Fiona Apple sing the lines “I’m amorous but out of reach / A still-life drawing of a peach.” Apparently Euan McCall was in the lab, and thus, Nectary was born.

Simply brilliant. It's in a class of its own as far as dirty roses go. The animalic hum that cuts through the fruit and flowers is inspired- it's like rolling around in romantic, sexy dirt.

This is a unique fragrance that falls into a category I call Gourmusk-Floral. It's dirty delicious - a big, wet fur opening with sweet peach, tart grape, and lots of animallic musk notes. Despite this, it smells amazing to me - reminds me of that dirty macerated strawberry liqour notes in Sadanne with the salty, musky ambergris minus the wine... the grapes here aren't liquored but help brighten the opening with a tartness that is needed to balance the other richer notes. The oud is also blended expertly and complements the fruity/sweet/musky notes adding a woodsy, 'oudness' that isn't too loud or jarring, or seem like just piling ontop; it serves to deepen and balance the other notes. Likewise, the rose note becomes strongly present early on, and adds a beauty and elegance to what could be an unruly list of big notes. Longevity and sillage is medium+ and overall an artistic composition of densely fragrant, high quality ingredients.

Wonderfully layered floral with a...juicy element that appeals to me. I think that juiciness comes from the cranberry, which gives a slightly tart berry center to the multiple flowers on top of it. It does evoke nectar in that way. Sometimes the florals can read powdery - I would usually find that less appealing than I do here.

Normally I’m not a fan of rose scents but this one is so good! It has a dark drydown and a woody undertone that makes it bold and modern and keeps you wondering. Absolutely lovely!

sweet, fragrant rose petals pressed between your fingers on an Autumn night. Whimsical, nostalgic, innocence with a creeping, subtle bodily funk on the horizon.

Very similar to Hollyrose by Room 1015 which I already own. The oud comes off like leather, brue cranberry like black current. A fruity animalic, leather rose.

Soapy without being reminiscent of VERSACE's Bright Crystal. It's a predominantly rose-themed fruity fragrance

This is what Persephone (goddess of spring) must smell like. Definitely a "brutal floral bouquet" as phrased in the blurb. It's everything that spring is. Will be triggering to anybody with seasonal allergies.

not for me but i can still appreciate it. a more mature take on rose, a layered showing. she has lived a life and has stories to tell.

Second ever sample of a Jorum Studio perfume. Awful. Got a huge whiff of the grandma plastic-wrapped couch and couldn’t get it off fast enough. This is one of THOSE florals. I’m starting to understand that I hate animalic. There’s an inherent stench. Jesus, deliver us. Also, what fresh hell is cranberry and civet in the same bottle?

I truly love this one but suspect my husband may not, as he has an aversion to another rose perfume I own, Ce Soir ou Jamais by Annick Goutal. What to do??? Hahaha probably buy a bottle anyway. Where Ce Soir is pear, red wine and quite a dusty rose, Nectary opens for me with a burst of wet, utterly fresh rose, followed immediately by a hit of oud as though it were just torn from the bush. I got scared at this point... Oud is very forward on me and often overpowers everything else. I typically shy clear of it in perfumes, especially after working in Dubai a few times where it seems obligatory to pipe it into the air ducts of the malls. But right after the oud came a tantalizing peach, very slightly tart initially, that paired itself to the rose, and then a salty yet rich scent, I believe the ambergris which isn't something I've been able to experience before. I love it! The peach/rose, oud and ambergris all wove in and out with each other for hours in a kind of counterplay, anchored by the animalic notes that added a dirty and earthy texture. The peach got sweeter as this continued and made the salty/sweet contrast feel especially lush. Some perfumes seem so well balanced that you can't pick out individual notes. With this perfume it felt like those four notes continued to dance, none dominating but each taking place of precedence from time to time, and with the base notes gradually peeking through and humming along. Out of the Progressive Botany Collection, this and Phloem are far and away my favorites. They're all fascinating, but this and Phloem are the two that I find wear the most nicely on my skin. They all take quite differently to skin than they smell on a tester, so I would encourage people to do as I did and get their hands on a sample set!

I get a rubbery civet and oakmoss upon opening, leathery, wet, but it morphs into an oriental, chewy, tart rose-fruit turkish delight. Turns completely gourmand, with orientaly woodsy and resinous undertones. Definitely a bomb perfume a little goes a long way, good staying power. Not in love with the opening, the drydown is nice. I have several oriental balsamic rose gourmands however so won't be a buy for me. Rose overload!🌹🌹🌹 This is a very powdery, floral that unfortunately can age someone when they wear it. There is that sweetness in the fragrance that I wouldn't say is fruity, but more like sweetness from the blossoms of the fruit. In some ways, it reminds me of a older ladies bathroom where you can see their jelly candle caked with dust. Like I enjoy clean fragrances but, I try to keep them more up to date. I'll still give it credit for tickling my brain's memory🧠 Zodiac Trio ⬆️Virgo☀️Capricorn🌙Libra

To me this is A Lipstick Perfume. I don’t know if that means I’m getting a powdery note similar to the scent of a perfumes lipstick, or that my minds eye is conjuring an image of a woman wearing bright red lipstick when I smell it. Very Portrait of A Lady

Ooof this one does not sit right with me- I’ve been enjoying sampling this line, however nectary smells like roses and rotten teeth breath to me... I usually love animalic perfumes but this is sickly sweet breath and roses- a big no!

love this one on me. perfect balance of fruity & animalistic. powdery but juicy. slightly leathery. i wore it out when i went tubing and it felt perfect. love her.

Buttery rose rose rose, rubbery animalics, clotted cream, plastic peach and powder... Something faintly tonsil stone-y about this but not offensively so.

Wildflower honey, cedar cigar box, sharp rose. Quite nice and I really don’t get much animal funk at all.
