Rare Eau de Parfum

This is one of those citrus/green fragrances that just gets it right. It opens with a fresh, slightly spicy brightness , driven by bergamot and basil, but what makes it stand out is how natural and effortless it feels. There’s nothing sharp or synthetic here. It’s fresh, but with texture. The green facet is key. It’s not just “citrus fresh” , it has an aromatic, almost leafy quality that gives it depth and keeps it interesting. The vetiver in the base anchors everything with a clean, slightly earthy dryness, so it never turns into a simple cologne. It stays refined, but still very easy to wear. What I like most is the feeling it creates. It’s uplifting without being loud. The kind of scent you put on after a shower when you want to reset, feel clean, and start the day in a good mood. It has that “good energy” quality, fresh, optimistic, and very natural. Completely unisex, and again, genuinely so. It doesn’t lean either way. It’s just clean, green freshness done properly. Season-wise, this is clearly built for warmer weather. Spring, summer, or any mild sunny day, that’s where it shines. Not ideal for cold temperatures, where it might feel too light. But in heat or even just good weather, it works effortlessly. And as you said, after a shower, it’s almost perfect. Performance is moderate, around the 4 hour mark, with a soft, clean trail. It’s not trying to fill a room, and that’s exactly the point. Now, the part people overlook: the brand. La Manufacture is a relatively quiet French niche house, founded in 2014 by Bruno Truchon Bartès after decades working in major perfume companies. The idea was simple but well executed: take classic French perfumery structures and reinterpret them with a modern, slightly more natural and refined approach. “Rare” actually comes from their original line of citrus colognes, later reworked into Eau de Parfum concentration, which explains why it feels more structured and long-lasting than a typical fresh fragrance. It’s also a brand that doesn’t get talked about enough, probably because it sits in that space between classic and niche, not flashy, not hyped, but very well executed. Overall, this is not your typical citrus fragrance. It’s fresher, greener, and more nuanced. Quietly original, very wearable, and one of those scents that just makes your day better without trying too hard.

Under the blistering sun, the summer air hung thick and heavy, making the earth itself seem to shimmer in the heat. He wandered through the crumbling remnants of a Middle Age dungeon, its stone walls cool to the touch, offering relief from the relentless blaze outside. The air within felt different, fragrant with centuries of silence and dampness, mingling with the faintest trace of herbs growing in the cracks of the courtyard. He longed for something to immortalize this rare moment—something sharp and clean that could cut through the oppressive weight of the summer heat. In the heart of the dungeon’s shadowy embrace, he pulled out a small vial, a blend of bergamot and basil. As he sprayed it into the air, the light and vivid scent swirled around him, like a breeze sweeping over a sunlit field at dawn. The citrusy bite of bergamot tingled in his nose, fresh and bright, as though sunlight itself had been squeezed into the dark space. I bought the bottle in 2023. First of all, I thought why it is Rare whereas the note pyramid was so simple! I am using it as perfume mostly for gym, and now the half of bottle left. The bergamot here is so so so fantastic, realistic, and uplifting. I think it is the reason for Rare, but I don’t find the same quality in, such as Torino 21

Both reviewers below missing the fantastic Rhubarb note in this which is strange because it's also the main player and impossible not to detect once it appears. In the opening you get a very natural Bergamot then the Basil kicks in and you think this is going to be quite a herbal citrus fragrance but wait there's another player yet to show their hand as the Rhubarb quickly comes into become the main player in this beautifully simple blended fragrance. In the drydown you get a touch of vetiver that never threatens to take this into anything other than a lovely Citrus Rhubarb cologne style fragrance. If you like Rhubarb scents and see this at a decent price then snap it up because you are likely going to love this.

This is a quality house, albeit too stuck in the architecture metaphors. It’s basically a great citrus cologne, with quality ingredients. It’s easier to understand its structure if you check the entry for the original eau de cologne. It shows clearly the rhubarb note, and also the attempt at a Chypre base. I say attempt because it is almost (almost!) there, but not quite. It is as strange as it sounds, and yet it somehow works. It gives it this bitter, metallic tinge that works oh so well in the heat of summer. I’ve been reaching for this a lot lately. Think of the latest Hermes... It performs like a cologne.
