Tuberosis

After almost using up a full bottle of Carthusia's Tuberosa, I began my quest for the perfect tuberose perfume. I love the white, smooth, fleshy petals of tuberose. But I don't like tuberose when it's too flashy, too feminine (or too sexy), flirtatious or seductive. I like tuberose, which is a dignified fresh flower. So I couldn't help but try Jean-Claude-Elena's tuberose perfume, Tuberosis. Because I'm a fan of his work. In conclusion, this was my ideal tuberose. Tuberosis is like a cool breeze that foretells autumn. There is no gaudiness at all, white and transparent elegant. Still, Tuberosis does not emphasize femininity, it is not sweet, and it is clean, so I think it is perfect not only for women but also for men who like tuberose. Yes definitely unisex. It's not a garden of tuberoses blooming like choking, but a single tuberose swaying in the wind. I was thinking of making this my everyday scent for the hot weather. But I probably won't.... Because I knew this scent before. It was a tuberose (maybe gardenia, I didn't know the difference back then) balm that I bought in Hawaii when I first started learning about perfume. It was a dignified white flower with almost no sweetness. That was the beginning of my journey in search of tuberose. Tuberosis is definitely the scent that could end my journey. But at the same time it's a scent that makes me feel like I'm back where I started. So my tuberose journey will continue...

I’m a big, bearded dude who is crazy for tuberose. And while I don’t typically subscribe to the idea of gendering fragrances, tuberose is definitely a note that is traditionally feminine. It also tends to be an absolute beast, overpowering the wearer and anyone within five feet. It’s a note I’m absolutely obsessed with, but also one from which I tend to shy away. And then I found Tuberosis. I really love this scent. It gives me everything I want in a tuberose fragrance and doesn’t leave me feeling like a powerful 80s business woman when I wear it. The tuberose is not beastly; it’s soft and buttery and sits fairly close to the skin. The spices ground the floral nicely and move the tuberose into a more classically unisex arena. The longevity is above average on my skin and it’s a scent I can wear just about anywhere at any time of the year. I spent a lot of time looking for my perfect tuberose, and this is it. Jean-Claude Ellena and Laboratorio Olfattivo knocked it out of the park. This house has a big fan in me after this.

Initially it’s very similar to Carnal Flower. They both have a strong green/herbal element (albeit from different notes) that is wonderful with the medicinal tuberose. Carnal flower is a lot louder whereas Tuberosis sit close to skin. The difference really shows up about 30 minutes in (or when the melon typically comes out in CF). The green in Tuberosis changes to a more definitive carnation/coriander mix and CF trades some of the green for sweet melon. The longevity on both is great, although Tuberosis becomes a skin scent far sooner and never projects like the diva CF does. They are both beautiful, but if forced I think I like Tuberosis a bit more. She’s a little more elegant and restrained....but real talk honestly I’m just not a big fan of melon and it was always a distraction for me in CF.

Love it, love it, love it, love it! An unisex take on this marvelous flower that has been dearest to me since I smelled Gucci Bloom I love it, I will buy it sooner or later (crossing fingers for sooner) It is a white flower that feels complex: the spices balance the whole fragrance and the musk gives a cleanliness that is wonderful This is delicate, soft, neither warm or cold, but extremely bright; like a beatiful woman smilling at you holding a bouquet, it makes you feel happy and safe, and it is extremely clean If I were to buy it (which I will), I think I would use it only seeing people I hold dearly to my heart. For me it really gives me the sensation of security and tenderness

Opens a bit spicy and green-ish, then gradually becomes sweeter. I'm surprised that tuberose has so many faces and this is yet another lovely one. It doesn't even remind me of any other perfume from my humble, but growing tuberose collection. Also this is a great and successful blind buy with zero regrets. I'd say it's 50% sexy and 50% cute. However, I would like it to have a little bit more strength or sillage, but at least I don't have to worry about killing my colleagues. Only inconspicuously seducing them. 😈 Can't wait for it to bloom in summer.

I really love this, and when I first got my sample I was sure I was going to buy a full bottle, but it reminds me of Fracas and Carnal Flower quite a bit. So much so that I don't feel I need all three, as I've already got Fracas and CF. BUT...if I didn't already have those two, this would definitely be a full bottle in my future of this, and I completely agree with Jeca's review below, it perfectly states what and how I feel about this perfume.

This is my current favourite, I smell it all the time, but this means I have to spray it all the time, because it's as weak as it is beautiful. 😭 Probably the weakest of all perfumes I have, including the cheapest ones. This is so frustrating, I wish there was something this divine but stronger!

This is the best tuberose in the world. NO aromatic noise, no food, no coconut, no vulgarity or simplicity. It is the most wonderful tuberose buds with a tender green hint in the top. Try on skin and enjoy.

This is gorgeous. Somewhat reminiscent of Nishane Tuberoza. The tuberose is somewhat juicy, luminous.

The opening is very green, but not in a harsh or masculine way; slightly herby but very soft, almost powdery, and very very clean. The white florals underneath come out pretty quickly. It’s very smooth as the fragrance goes on, not harsh or screechy at all, and I feel it doesn’t have too much risk to overpower others (if sprayed reasonably.) I don’t really get the spices others mention. I definitely get that underlying fresh musk. It’s pleasant, but it doesn’t do anything crazy for me; I think tuberose just isn’t a note I’m in love with, but I still see the appeal.

If you're a tuberose lover it's definitely worth a try. It's nearly a win but for that carnation note, which to me, always makes a perfume seem dated. I do enjoy the spicy opening in this, but for a tuberose-centric fragrance, in all it's juicy green glory, I'm choosing Moon Bloom.

If you're familiar with Jasmin de Pays by Perris, you'll immediately notice that Tuberosis is Ellena's tuberose modulation of the same approach.

When reading through Jean Claude Ellena's Atlas of Perfumed Botany, I remember audibly laughing out loud when I read that Poison by Dior (a tuberose bomb) was banned from restaurants because it was disturbing other diners. My experience with tuberose has been similar, I remember a friend who wore Bravi by Thameen when we went to see The Barber of Seville, and I could smell her from multiple seats away. Tuberosis presents a subdued tuberose scent, more polite than it can be in other fragrances. Here's my final verdict: if you like tuberose, Bravi is the perfume for you and if you don't care for tuberose like myself, Narcisse Taiji is better than Tuberosis. I like Narcisse Taiji because it is a beautiful, complex green floral where tuberose plays a critical part.

Tuberose itself usually comes with a very green scent on its own in most perfumes that at least I have tried. But in this perfume the coriander adds a very strong parsley scent that's almost overpowering on my skin and that with the carnation note makes this perfume even more green and herbal smelling. I'm a Persian woman and parsley is a very common scent in Iranian kitchens, I love perfumes that remind me of middle Eastern and Indian spices but for me personally all this herbal scent is unbearable and makes me feel nauseous and light headed. I'm a massive fan of tuberose perfumes. But this one is an absolute no for me. I prefer Carnal Flower and Supreme Bouquet.

Tuberosis by Laboratorio Olfattivo transmits serenity, effortlessly capturing elegance and tranquility. The fragrance opens with a realistic tuberose note, delicately accentuated by pungent coriander. This initial impression bears resemblance to Carnal Flower, albeit with a softer touch. As the scent progresses, it transitions into a musky tuberose accord, maintaining a clean freshness without veering into skin-like scents.

This wishes it was as good as Compliment. This is a tuberose with cumin bomb. Very cumin and coriander heavy. We are not making a Asian dish here. It is supposed to be a perfume. I usually like spiced tuberose but this one is not well blended at all. Smells more like food or a spice cabinet with a vase of tuberoses on the table or kitchen counter.

This smells so bitter and just absolutely awful on me. I think it was the spices or coriander. I'm a tuberose lover but this one is not for me.

Thank you to the lovely jeca (Elena) for sending me a generous sample of this perfume to try. I have loved testing it out on my skin during the warm summer months. This is a pure fresh green tuberose, gentle. A bit round and creamy, not too sharp and green, but still fresh and watery. Think of Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia - it's that type of fragrance. I get a bit of spice, similar to the spicy bite of leaves when you break them open - the zing of sap. And an overall calm effect, rain on tuberose buds. In fact, I smelled the tuberose flowers after the rain in my mother's garden last month, and this is reminding me of that soft, lovely feeling. My husband likes this one, but he does have to come in close to smell it - not a cloying, loud tuberose (although I enjoy those, too!) I think this is the perfect tuberose for everyone to try.

I bought a bottle in 2021 and another bottle in 2024. The new version has a cloyingly sweet note that the old version did not. I’m not sure if it’s ethyl maltol but it smells like some kind of candy vanilla molecule. There is also a more synthetically ‘fresh’ feeling now. The original version was warm and beautiful and far superior. It was my favorite tuberose perfume out of the dozens that I have. I’m not sure why they reformulated — maybe the original had lilial in it and they had to replace it? Whatever it is, I’m sad!

You don't reach for this when in tuberose mood, more like the first Jardins of Hermes mood. A rough, unripe tuberose surrounded by vegetable leaves and some freshly cut garden spices, somehow idyllic, welcoming instead of intoxicating, suggesting flower-patterned dresses, slow life, lazy days, cooking in the summer kitchen. May seem quite odd if you're hunting for another Fracas offspring, but it's at home with other plants, other vegetation.

Usually, I wouldn't say I liked the fragrance's tuberose scent and never smelled the actual tuberose. This fragrance is more on my like side; the flower is tender, not sharp like the tuberose in other fragrances. Also, spices balance it, and it is also slightly salty for me. This is the tuberose for those who hate tuberose. I got compliment from the stranger straight away.

I used to try a sample and finished which was rare case to me, I also got complement from people and myself could smell very sweet but naturally tuberose scent was felt uplifting me and quite enjoyable. I might get FB when I start to often miss that specific scent! (even I have already own several tuberose perfumes which are way more flowery-powdery.)

Tuberosis Overall: 5/10 Projection: 9/10 Longevity: 7/10 Sillage: 7/10 Comments: Tuberosis definitely packs a punch. The tuberose is strong. The carnation and coriander notes are nice. The musk is pretty subtle given all the tuberose. I wouldn't wear this personally, but if you were into tuberose and carnation, I could see how this could be for you.
