Atlas

I quite enjoy the concept, and the reality, of a fragrance with rum 'n' raisin top notes. Takes me back to the 70s when that was the most exotic icecream flavour available in the UK. :) Tobacco notes always appeal to me, as does hay - I have acquired several fragrances which lean into those. Atlas is quite different from the rest of the Laboratory line, which are greener for the most part, and I am glad to have got my hands on a bottle if it has been discontinued. EDIT: I have been wearing this today and enjoying it - rich and spicy without being heavy. My husband said it reminded him of his grandpop's pipe tobacco, which he says about a lot of things to be fair, but in this instance he was spot on (see the description above of the perfumers' tobacconist-bothering) There will be no living with him now... :)

Wow -- here I am 18 months later, and I'm not sure if this one is going to work out... Yes, it has a deeply royal and smooth boozy element to it, but there is also an off note, herbaceous and piquant, and it is quite a uneven element to an otherwise wonderful scent. I might need to try this one out again, I think, but it's looking like it's heading to the 'catch and release' domain for me...

Wow. Instant intrigue. It went straight to the 'live in' category, even though I blind bought this one. It has a rich, royal, boozy spice combo, with soft, pleasant woods backing the scent. It's quite an intoxicating scent, I must say, and I'm SUPER happy that this blind buy worked out! Even though I already own this, I'm gonna test it again, on its own, and report back on it...

That little bowl of cinnamon potpourri that's been in your great aunt's bathroom for 7 years now. Not my bag.

Fruity, light, even ozonic opening with some sweetness. Smells very "yellow". Best thing I can find to describe it is baked pears cooled in the fridge overnight. Nothing boozy or woody unless flat cider.

Sampled this on skin, knowing nothing about it. First thoughts in first few seconds, like an apple pie full of cloves. Then maybe some plum sort of thing too. All underlying with some slightly dirty edge to it. It then seemed to almost have a burning type smell to it appear, which grew more after a few minutes. Then I read up on this fragrance and the main note claims to be pipe tobacco. That sounds right, but unlike some tobacco frags this one is not just a fresh tobacco in the packet vibe, it has a fair amount of that pipe being smoked thing too. The manufacturer also says "layers of rum, vanilla and hay", I'm not getting boozy rum, I think that is what I picked up from the apple pie reference. Vanilla I can pick up on I suppose but it is not striking, and hay I think is what I had picked up on when saying I thought it had a dirty edge to it. All in all, I keep notes on frags I try and I filed this under the title 'no'. I don't dislike the smell of it, but I just can't imagine wanting to wear it at all. I can however imagine its smell being used for a yankee candle, it would be red in colour and probably smell like a load of the ones they already do and would be bought in those tiny versions and primarily for christmas, as the smell is a christmas one :) So, if you want to smell like a christmas yankee candle, this could be for you. You read below mention of ginger, tonka, orange peel. I understand that as it dries down, but you can see how this is familiar christmas territory too. I think even coconut can be mentioned if you disassemble it. Nobody who meets you when you're wearing it will pick these things out though. I think the christmas yankee candle impression is what they'll get. Laboratory Perfumes do however do some others, Tonka and Amber are both solid offerings, and Gorse might be good for some people if you like a coconut vibe freshy.

Is there anything more fun for a perfume nerd than a discovery set to explore a new brand? I picked up this set almost a year ago and only now am I finding the time to play with it. In that time, it would appear that this particular fragrance has been discontinued (it's not longer listed on the house's website) which is a shame because while it's not something I would wear myself, it's very unique. Atlas (2017), came later than the original lineup of four fragrances (2012). So this is the firth fragrance, but they have cleverly given it the subtitle No. √25 (the square root of 25 being 5). My initial impression was "no, do not like!" but after a few moments I started to understand it. This is a grandpa fragrance, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's incredibly boozy and rich, with spice and tobacco notes. If Atlas were a particular person in a specific room, it would be a distinguished wealthy older man wearing a smoking jacket and slippers in a study filled with books and a fireplace. If that appeals to you, hunt this down now because a quick Google search reveals it's still available at stockists at a discounted price. It would be an excellent autumn and winter fragrance if you want old man and old money vibes. While this isn't something that I would add to my collection, there is a candle version of this that I think I will scoop up while it's available on discount. It would create a very cosy ambiance in the colder months.

I bought this as I really loved this on initial application and moving into the heart notes. However, something went wrong at drydown and it went from sublime to unpleasant (consequently I ended up selling my bottle). The top is boozy and at the same time fresh and ozonic, the middle is warm and spicy but the end just turned (on me) into a cloying, slightly body odourish vanilla bomb that at that point made me dislike it intensely. I was really disappointed as I thought I'd found a slightly off-kilter summer fragrance and the price point is excellent. Don't be discouraged, maybe it was my chemistry that turned it weird; if it works on you I think you'll love it. Hunt it out and give it a go.

It starts out with a very strong spicy smell, the exact scent you smell in the air in a spice market, strong and piercing. then when it dries down a bit, it turns into a Super sweet syrupy, head-ache-inducing type of fragrance. This formula would be great as a candle, but not as a perfume. it's too heavy. But i appreciate that they don't test on animals.

There's something in this that makes me feel nauseous. I can smell the same thing in the drydown of MFK's Grand Soir & Ciel de Gum, as well as Kilian's Black Phantom. If anyone knows what it might be please let me know, thanks!

Atlas was not launched on 2010. This was released just last year,2017 as their 5th and latest offering.
