Sagamore

Sagamore is a forgotten gem. It's an 80's scent very nice, refined, gentle and classy. It's not strong, animalic and heavy like many frags of that era; it's a well blended mix of lavender, cinnamon, lilly, geranium, amber and various spicies. I was expecting something more potent but sagamore is very gentle, not weak so the performance is just ok. It's quite rare but there are similar or alternative parfumes to this. For example i can compare sagamore to Tiffany for men(more punchy but more dated compared to sagamore), Chanel pour monsieur concentree( performance slightely better and more oakmossy, so it depends if you like oakmoss) and caron le 3 homme(a bit spicier but quite close). So, the main thoughts are two: first, sagamore is a classy mature scent still wearable today, so not a weird smell here ; second, it's very hard to find but there are similar scents so if you have one of the fragrances i mentioned before it's not stricktly necessary to have it. If you are a collector it's another story. If you are forced to a blind buy keep in mind my advices. Overall, the Truth is: sagamore is great! A me sagamore piace molto, la performance è non particolarmente brillante sulla mia pelle però il profumo merita. Maybe My vote-8, 5 In one word-kindness Alternative - Tiffany for men, Chanel pour homme concentree, caron le 3 homme. The three fragrances are not the same but share the vibe and few notes with lancome sagamore.

I have the later version released as part of a collection, different bottle, and separate Fragrantica page, which I commented on. The note listing in Fragrantica for that newer release of Sagamore is just plain wrong. It should match this original one pretty closely. Or at last the accords I smell seem to match. Sagamore is identified here as a chypre, but a chypre without oakmoss? Lots of designated Chypre these days aren't big on oakmoss. But I think this is far closer to a Spicy Oriental (spicy amber) than a chypre, both in note structure and in actual accords smelled. Lots of spiciness (cinnamon, ginger) and even geranium and carnation have spicy facets (mint, cloves). This has lavender too which gives a nice curtsey to the Fougere without being one. And the floral contribution. Sagamore is VERY nice. A true hidden gem whose scent profile reputedly beat out Pierre Bourdon's formula for what became Creed Green Irish Tweed for Lancome's brief for this fragrance. Sagamore no doubt took inspiration from Chanel Pour Monsieur and inspired the very similar smelling Tiffany for Men. It has some early-in-the-life-cycle similarities to Le Tresieme Homme de Caron, but is much more pleasant in the drydown than the Caron, which turns a bit nasty. I actually would describe Sagamore as sort of a hybrid between Chanel Pour Monsieur and CK Obsession for Men, with a bit of added Animalis. The cinnamon and powderiness strengthens the comparison to Obsession. I wore it yesterday and it had just outstanding longevity. I know why the Green Irish Tweed/Cool Water DNA has been so popular and withstood the "test of time". What I don't understand is why Sagamore and Tiffany for Men have been so readily forgotten. I very highly recommend Sagamore. Maybe I won't be in the market for a $400 bottle of discontinued Tiffany for Men now.

I have smelled so many fragrances that came out of the mid-80s, and I have come to expect a certain character and sensibility. It was a time where masculine fragrance wasn't exactly equated with subtlety, and while there were some compelling and stunning fragrances at that time, they were often those which put a loveable braggadocio above charm and grace. There is however, Sagamore. What a stirring composition, one that makes its presence known, but yields to its wearer. It is not flashy, but it does have panache. A chypre that conjures up the likes of Shalimar, Habit Rouge, Le Troisieme Homme de Caron, but somehow is more nuanced and ethereal than any of these. Take for instance the most dominant note of clary sage, which has subtle, almost tea-like facets that round off the lavender, petitgrain, and bergamot. The spices and florals in the heart are tempered with this styrax, vanilla, and sandalwood, and just when you think Sagamore has dried down to a whisper, its sillage returns and you're reminded of how nuance can help you appreciate the present all the more so, and to use your senses mindfully, moment by moment. A stone cold stunner.

Sagamore is light and sexy at the same time. There is a fair amount of bergamot or petitgrain or both which is lovely. Quality. This is a tiny bit spicy but less spicy than many. Quality ingredients. No cloying musks. Reminds me a tiny bit of Tosca. This can easily translate for a ladies perfume also. There is also a Shalimar sort of quality to it, maybe the mix of lavender, vanilla and citrus. Much lighter than Shalimar though. You can sense the benzoin also in the dry down. I test today a vintage original mini.

A mesmerizing scent of yore. Quite strong, mysterious and masculine leaning. Had I been older than 7 years old back when it was released, I would have probably wore it as my signature. Unfortunately, all I got nowadays is a 5ml promotional bottle which I preciously keep away from light and humidity and only smell once in a while.

I had this scent in the late 80s and I loved it. I have recently purchased a few genuine vintage bottles of this great perfume and honestly it's still as beautiful as it ever was. I love this fragrance so much. Nothing else comes close,for me anyway. Far and away my favourite fragrance. Pity it's so hard to find.

This has been my husband's signature scent for decades and for the last 10 years, we can only find it in vintagae stores. A timeless masterpiece, very rich in composition and so well blended, they don't dare to compose such complex fragrances anymore, unfortunately.

First of all, Sagamore and Programme Homme are NOT the same fragrance --- not even close. I own both, so I can easily compare. Sagamore is a fresh and spicy oriental very much like Chanel's classic Pour Monsieur, and according to H&R's Fragrance Guide, contains many of the same components, although clearly in different proportions. The notes for Sagamore are listed as: Top: Bergamot, lemon, petitgrain, clary sage, lavender Middle: Carnation, jasmine, geranium, cinnamon, ginger, rose, muguet Base: Patchouli, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, styrax, benzoin, musk In contrast, Programme Homme is a green citrus composition that more closely resembles Halston 1-12 or Grey Flannel. Sagamore is subtle and sophisticated, but lasts a good long time on my skin, and works equally well for business, casual, or evening wear. It's a timeless, understated fragrance that deserves to be more widely known.

I imagine the strength of this fragrance perished long ago, over many years of storage . I am using a vintage sample of the EDT which provides only the ghost of a perfume: a very subtle array of opening citrus, floral heart and musky dry down. (Caron's Pour Un Homme does it better). I would probably have to bathe in it to experience its impact beyond the skin, but at least it provides a fresh, clean sensation and a frisson of nostalgia for the derring do of eighties perfumery.

Instant flashback to the 80's. Miami Vice, Magnum PI, mustaches and excess. Opens with a blast of animalic musk mixed with 60 other notes. Not my favorite part of the experience but bearable. The magic is in the drydown. Sandalwood, vanilla, amber and styrax. Wonderful basenotes and solid quality. Would I pay full retail? That's a stretch, but in the 70 dollar range it's worth the plunge for the high quality base alone. Scent 7/10 Performance 8.5/10

This isn't the worse scrubber I've ever tried (that would be Paul Sebastian Fine Cologne) but it's not far from it. Holy Mackerel! On me it opens with an intense cat pee/bitter pungency and dries with an overbearing jasmine soapiness. I could only take so much of it before I ran into the bathroom and scrubbed my arm down with soap and water. Wow. Haven't had that kind of response in a while!

The following is for Programme Homme, which some claim is the same fragrance: This starts off as a fairly traditional aromatic fougere of the 1980s, possibly closest to Azzaro Pour Homme, but with a touch of Kouros as well. That lasts for a couple of hours. What sets it apart is how nicely blended it is, relative to others of this genre, because it has that "manly" quality without becoming irritating in any way. After a couple of hours it gradually transitions into a a superb base that clearly has some castoreum. There is also dry/dusty patchouli and a spice element. Other notes are the "supporting cast," with a clear floral aspect. The lavender (from the fougere type opening) lasts a long time and there is a subtle woody presence. It's definitely not especially sweet. A couple hours later, it smells a bit like Acteur at the same point in development, which is dry, woody, slightly powdery, floral, and with a touch of sweetness. I prefer this to vintage Antaeus, for example, because I view that as more of a "mansweat" fragrance, whereas PH has more complexity and dynamism. One Man Show, on the other hand, has more distinct notes, but is far cruder (especially up top), with inferior blending (and likely inferior ingredients). Some have said this is identical to Sagamore. The notes to that one are listed as: "Top notes are lavender, clary sage, petit grain, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are carnation, ginger, cinnamon, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, rose and geranium; base notes are sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk, benzoin, vanilla and styrax." However, if Sagamore does not contain castoreum, then I can't imagine these two being identical. Also, PH seems to have an anisic quality in the top notes. Otherwise, the notes could be the same. It certainly seems that PH has patchouli, a wood note, geranium, and florals. Ginger and cinnamon seem right as well. So, PH goes from being a little rough (for a couple hours), in the typical aromatic fougere way, to being a kind of fougere/Oriental hybrid. There is a bit of a "cream" effect but not enough to make it boring. Projection ("sillage") varies, from being strong at first to being moderate/good several hours later. However, that is with one or two sprays. Longevity is excellent.

I’m rocking the thing this evening. Must be 30+ years since I actually owned a bottle (gift from my brother for Christmas and can’t have cost more than £15 for 100ML at the time). I chanced upon one of those coffrets and couldn’t resist. The opening is weird - Antaeus lite IMHO but when it settles down boy it’s own thing. I smell all the advertised notes but there’s something else going on - some kind of rich grape note which persists. Becomes earthy but much less animatic than Antaeus. It’s also more wearable also - people will comment. Like a bottle of Bruenlo Montelcino - I guess it really depends on vintage and May improve with age.. Honestly it’s that good.

Hidden amongst the discontinued lancome fragrances may be the best masculine chypre ever conceived. Sagamaore is a beautiful fragrance. It highlights the raw chypre accord beautifully with perfectly dosed little accents of flower and herb. I received what may be the best compliment possible for a chypre while wearing this. When I presented this to a female friend, she remarked "all I smell is a man's skin." Glorious perfection - no masculine chypre is more wearable than this. Perfect sillage and longevity, this one is absurdly sexy. Highly recommended!

This seems like a fragrance from the 70's more then the 80's. It is simiar to Balenciaga HoHang and Guerlain Habit Rouge, but with the citrus toned a bit; this does not have that oldmanish citrusy zest, it gives you a more darker and updated feeling. Sagamore seems more devoted to the color of it's bottle, darker Brown. Quite powerfull performance. All in all, a very good solid fragrance. This one I can wear and enjoy, while ho Hang not. P.S. Got a lot of compliments on it, one factor being that it is so freaking strong...other then the smell itself.

I can only think that wesleyhclark had some Sagamore that had 'turned' or 'gone off'. Sagamore is one of the most beautiful fragrances for a man I have encountered in over 25 years of collecting. I have always received lovely compliments from this confirming what I already knew- Class and beauty in a bottle. Made in a time when the synthetic market was exploding Sagamore was severely overlooked. One of the greats IMO. Wesley- Do try and find some more Sagamore!

I own a bottle just like the one in the profile picture. It’s the truck version of Chanel Pour Monsieur. Heavy duty masculine chypre of yore.
