Histoire d'Orangers

The more I wear Histoire d'Orangers, the more I love it. At first, I felt it didn't compare well to my memory of Seville a l'Aube, and I allowed myself to be swayed by reviews comparing Histoire d'Orangers to high end hand soap. But then I finally got my hands on another bottle of Seville a l'Aube. It's true, Histoire d'Orangers isn't as complex as its discontinued big sister, but the family resemblance is definitely there. Spritzed into the decolletage, it carries the family legacy well and escapes any soapiness. The wax is there, it just isn't as prominent, and the honey and incense are far weaker, but I don't find this to be a bad thing. Seville a l'Aube can be too sexy and heavy for daytime wear around the house, and at auction site prices it's too expensive for lunch and shopping. Histoire d'Orangers gives me the lovely orange blossom fragrance I want for daily wear. It's beautiful. When I wear it I'm reminded a bit of early spring when the first wafts of orange blossom begin to fill the air of my town, before they take on the decaying scent of spent blooms. I doubt I'll ever stick to just one signature fragrance, especially since Seville a l'Aube is discontinued, but Histoire d'Orangers would be on my short list if I were to choose a signature. Of the newer iterations of LAP, it does a good job, whereas my new bottles of Premier Figuier and L'Eau de Ambre Extreme are weak and disappointing. Even the Tea For Two I bought a year ago (since discontinued again) is less lovely than the clear bottle I bought recently in order to compare. I'm a LAP fan, and I find Histoire d'Orangers to rate well above the other new iterations I've tried in the past few months.

The perfumes you love the most are hardest to write about. I grew up on an orange farm so to me this is very nostalgic. An expansive mix of sweet orange blossom and ambroxan is enlivened by the dry cooling effect of white tea and neroli. White musk supports the clean feel of these notes without coming across as too soapy. Orange blossom is the star of the show but it’s ambroxan that does most of the heavy lifting, and white tea tannin is ultimately what sets this bottle apart from other white floral colognes. Overall it’s very fresh, clean, transparent and mildly sweet. It falls squarely unisex but I think some men may find it too delicate. I get 4 - 6 hours from it but I live in a warm climate and use about 8 sprays. The compliments keep flooding in. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone should own a white floral cologne because they work in any season and for any occasion - they are the ultimate dumb reach. While others can smell like dryer sheets or air freshener, this one smells expensive and just a touch unusual. It is both exceptional and affordable, it could be a safe blind buy if you’re familiar with the notes. I don’t think I’ll ever be without a bottle.

For me, Histoire d'Orangers is best appreciated when not sniffed directly off the inner wrist. I purchased a 10 ml travel size as a tester as I was looking for a musk/orange blossom fragrance but had nowhere to smell it in person. I really didn't like it at first, it smelled harsh, like nail varnish remover and slightly animalic around the edges. It also disappeared of my wrist in no time. I then tried spraying it on the nape of my neck and between the breasts, and oh my, what a revelation, I keep catching heavenly little whiffs of it throughout the day. Very beautiful. I've now purchased a full bottle. Am curious about Sur L'Herbe now. I've owned Neroli Portofino, which I like a lot (bright and citrussy rather than floral, but unfortunately very little longevity), and Mugler Cologne (which I don't like at all).

White florals for me, are a literal crap shoot. Too much sweetness or aldehyde and I’m transported to a porta potty in August. This is most of them, unfortunately. The other hazard is too much musk or amber and I’m in grandma’s closet. Not a bad place, not what I’m going for. But I love them or rather, love the ideal they represent. This one is perfection. It’s green enough on first spray that there’s no heaviness. It dries to that lovely perfection and lingers there, all day. This is white petals brushing past your cheeks and slipping through your fingertips. Heartachingly, beautifully feminine. It is so fresh and so delicate yet heady, as white florals ought to be. I think I’m a legit L’AP fangirl after this one.

I’m clearly in my l’artisan era because this the fourth home run for me with them as of late. This is what I had hoped for from Lutens Fleur D’Oranger. Simple, yet also sophisticated and elegant, a breezy, effortless realistic orange blossom. The white tea gently accents, tempering the natural soapiness. Makes me want to put on a big hat and break out the vinho verde, but also has enough basenote warmth that it works year round. Has a touch of malitol sweetness in the background. I’ve read the other reviews mentioning that this is animalic and I concur this is correct. The ambroxan here smells animalic and lived in, like smelling someone’s beautifully perfumed clothing.

This one is excellent. My bf and I love orange but I am glad we decided to buy this one for my mom. It leans more feminine. The perfume is the perfect marriage between Orange Blossom and White Tea. Simple but wonderful. It has enormous projection and it is very long lasting but as the smell is not very heavy and suffocating, it is super pleasant. When I am at my mom's she is like a walking air freshener :) Anyway, I can't recommend it more. L'artisan has many great smelling classic fragrances but this one is one of the stars in their lineup.

This is an instant CLASSIC. The best orange flower in my opinion, such a classy, refined, soapy musky clean perfume. Longevity and projection are huge, when the bottle arrived and first days not that much, but as usually happens with L’Artisan, they grow and grow week after week since u spray them for the first time, like they begin to get more dense and rich... you smell like a 5 star spa soap, such a mouthwatering orange blossom and musk. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, 10/10

I enjoyed it but I personally won't repurchase it. I find it quite non unique and very bland. It's just way too too simple for me. I like neroli and i own a lot of perfumes with this note but it's just nothing too special for me. For alternatives I recommend even Veronique Gabai Sur La Plage (more interesting and more unique) or Jo Malone London's orange blossom version (more realistic).

In my limited experience of L’Artisan’s range, this is by far my favourite. A mouth watering orange blossom accord without being sweet, fresh and crisp it wraps around you for many hours. I get delicious wafts of neroli throughout the day when wearing this, it has more substance than many others from this brand. Love it.

Every time I smell this fragrance I fall in love all over again. Neroli, orange blossom and musk, enhanced with ambroxan - blended and balanced to true perfection. It's exactly unisex, and an easy reach to smell fresh and clean in any time of day or season. Excellent longevity and sillage, backup bottle worthy for me.

I’m so in love with this perfume, but I can’t find it anywhere, and l’artisan doesn’t ship to my country. I don’t know where can I order it. Edit: I found it, I’m using it everyday. I’m so in love with this fragrance. It smells heavenly 🤤🥰🥰

Wow! This is a fresh Neroli & White Tea superstar. Reminds me of a more complete, refined TF Neroli Portifino. This projects very well on me and lasts quite long, especially for a freshie. If you like NP, you’ll love this one.

Actually my favorite fragrance such a nice orange blossom smell that reminds me of blooming jasmine trees. Silage isn't great but the gentle smell adds to the classiness methinks.

Delicioua well blended orange flowers! On me it does not last long but it is absolutely fresh and femenine in a mature way. Great summer scent!

Histoire d'Orangers is arguably a rather simplistic fragrance: a breeze of fresh neroli soon lifted by a fluffy, inky white musk, while ambroxan extends the fragrance further into the dry down. However, there are enough nuances to keep it pretty and natural-smelling. The neroli in the opening is fresh and transparent, with just enough green bitterness to evoke the natural feeling, and nothing sharp or soapy at all. A delicate honey casts golden shimmers to the neroli, just enough to add a touch of sensuality and suavity, and nothing sticky or cotton candy-like, either. The musk is clean and slightly inky, luckily without any connotation of sharp laundry powder to me. Its fluffy texture complements the feathery neroli perfectly, and lends an expansive sensation. The scent as a whole, is like an ethereal white cloud of neroli and musk, shined upon by the golden sunlight of honey. These first 3 hours are my favourite part of Histoire d'Orangers. Afterwards, ambroxan becomes more and more apparent, and eventually dominates the perfume and pushes the neroli to the edges. I usually perceive ambroxan as slightly salty, but mostly musky sweet with a vegetal/mineral nuance. Here, the vegetal facet does link with the neroli nicely at times. But once the ambroxan completely takes over, it's just ambroxan and nothing else, which eventually bores me in the end. Histoire d'Orangers rather whispers its story close to the skin, and lasts at least 7 hours thanks to the extensive dry down of ambroxan. Like many L'Artisan offerings, Histoire d'Orangers is very easy to appreciate and have a certain natural feeling in the opening. As an orange blossom fragrance, it's clean and fresh, but not as bitter herbal green as traditional cologne; it's fluffy and honeyed, but not as sweet as cotton candy or too indolic. It embodies the innocent nature of orange blossom perfectly. However, its overall simplicity and its extensive use of ambroxan may not jibe with everyone. I would mostly recommend it to those who happen to seek for a soft, non soapy neroli fragrance.

White flowers, I see you. This is a light take on white flowers, and even though it is called history of orange trees? (or is it, it is way too many years since I learned French at school). I don’t feel like the orange blossom is what dominates the fragrance. For me, this is leaning way more into the neroli and musk. This is really clean, but the tea is sweet and the musk feels very natural. All of those together makes for a very clean and slightly soapy scent. But that is how I often perceive neroli, as a clean, and soapy white floral. To those that comment on this being simple and effortless are absolutely right, but that is not negative at all? I feel like it is leaning more towards being simple, effortless and sophisticated. On the negative side though, it doesn’t really last. I get maybe an hour or two, and at that point it only smells like I have just washed my hands with a nice bar of soap. With that in mind I will say that it’s a bit too grown-up for me, but I imagine someone’s mum would absolutely die for this.

Citric-scented shrug. Hoped for great, or at least good, things here, given my general love of orange scents and soft spot for L'Artisan Perfumeur. I still think their Seville a L'Aube is one of the best orange frags ever - but it has a rich and heady quality, with all the wax and incense and extra bottom, that this one lacks. Sadly this Histoire is at the cheaper and more slapdash end of their range. It's just a pleasant but generic orange blossom which dies away in under half an hour, undergirded with clean but slightly metallic white musk, and errr ... that's it. Rather than any of the neroli big-hitters listed above it reminded me more strongly of Atelier Cologne's Mandarine Glaciale, for the weak showing and slightly slapdash 'yeah, that'll do the job, ship it out' feel of it all. Nice, but dull, and undistinguished performance with it. Really not worth the money when there are so many neroli/orange blossoms at every price point which could do more interesting or stronger things for you.

This is a classic orange blossom fragrance, on my skin it reads orange blossom from the very beginning all the way through. It's a very feel good perfume, slightly soapy, and very reminescent of the little vials of orange blossom essence that are used in Italy to add to the neapolitan pastiera. Unfortunately, the sillage and performance are a bit disappointing, but I have to say I've tried this in August with over 30°C degrees outside so I'm sure this has affected the performance, because as my skin warms up it typically "burns off" many many fragrances. This is a shame because this orange blossom is classy, elegant, time-less but NOT old-style at all. Eager to try this in the cooler months and also to try layering this with something more opulent, maybe some oud and vanilla, as the official L'artisan website suggests, or maybe some sandalwoods (could be extremely refined paired with Santal Austral or Santal Du Pacifique!).

Musky orange and neroli. Floral white tea. The breakdown is accurate but the quality could have been better. I’m getting a cleaning product vibe, almost like a urinal cake. The tea note gets stronger toward dry down and that’s really the best part. Overall, this frag is really strong. This stuff is ‘Sex Panther;” it’ll singe your nose hairs. An acquired taste and a decent take...would be better if it weren’t soapy.

This is a simple but beautiful neroli scent. Nothing fancy or convoluted. It’s a clean, fresh scent which would be ideal on a spring day with bright blue skies. It doesn’t last an eternity - maybe 2-3 hours of being able to actively smell it on myself. Absolutely not my usual scent profile and I’m not sure I would fork out L’Artisan Parfumeur prices for it, but if you’re a neroli lover it could be essential.

It tends to smell really harsh upon spraying but it calms down after a few minutes. It's beautiful! But there's this person I work with that can't tolerate the smell. She says it gives her a headache. Luckily for her the scent does not last long, it projects really well til around 2 hours (if you overspray) then gradually fades into skin scent by the 3rd-4th hr. I may have better luck when it gets warmer.

Lovely, fairly simplistic orange blossom fragrance with added sweetness from tonka and musk. I prefer the Lush perfume library Orange Blossom for a more realistic neroli orange blossom but this one is nice also. Could do with some added complexity to keep it more interesting. But perfectly lovely for summer and late spring. I have come to expect more from L’Artisan.

A beautiful floral-centric take on orange blossom, with a good amount of slightly green citrus tartness in the top, entering almost a touch of a ylang ylang like sweet direction as time goes on. A smooth creamy musk underlies the vivid fresh floral adding a warm, fuzzy, feminine leaning foundation. Nice!

At first sniff, this was a beautiful, crisp orange blossom with a bit of creaminess. It smells very much like walking through a flowering grove, very evocative and beautiful. Unfortunately it didn't last more than an hour on my skin, and even when it was on it barely projected.

I've sprayed it 10 minutes ago and I cannot smell it anymore. What I could get before it vanished, is beautiful orange blossom, but something sharp and unpleasant in the back. Now, if I really inhale my wrist, there is something a bit like Fracas.

Tart, clean, realistic orange blossom/neroli. Almost a waxy note towards the back. A absolute BALM on a summer day. I have been toying with getting a travel size for summer and I am still 50/50 but such a lovely scent.

Having seen a glimpse of the label this was not a true blind review, but was mixed in with two others from this house. I got them all confused. This opened with a light floral and green tone, slightly dusty and sits over a soft wave of amber. At times, it leans more toward a fresh, soft jasmine-like impression that avoids anything soapy, staying clean, fresh, and approachable throughout—though even calling it jasmine feels too strong. Maybe best described as a delicate sencha green tea nuance woven in with the floral elements, giving it a gentle, airy freshness. Either way it has a subtle nod of femininity. Looking at the notes, none feel particularly intense. The white tea and orange blossom help maintain that light, feminine-leaning freshness, while a touch of tonka adds a faintly dusty backdrop. Overall, projection was good and longevity was great. While it's refreshing and pleasant, it still manages to provide some depth and solid longevity, but ultimately comes across as a bit too delicate and softly feminine-leaning for my taste. I've been rotating through the three I have and there’s a consistent, mature freshness across them all. However, if you already think Jo Malone is kind of a wuss, you probably haven’t met this (more mature) softy.

A dull sun-bleached day distilled—thin white petals turned to soap, bright and clean, typical neroli’s waxy bitterness unfolding like damp linens drying under a Mediterranean sky. Stripped of colour. Laundry-like white floral freshness edged with citrus bite, while petitgrain’s green, twiggy sharpness flickers underneath, adding a fleeting astringency. Sweetness never quite softens, bitter never fully bites. A muted whisper of tea-laced woods, dry and faintly tannic, slightly anchors it, but it’s really too subtle, too late. The base is barely there, timid white musk a skeletal structure holding up something that dissolves before it can take form. Clean but soulless. Not as bad as neroli can get sometimes, but still one stripped of warmth, stripped of depth, left a sterile ghost of itself. Weightless, like a forgotten breeze through an open window—passable. But nothing more.

100% a posh hotel soap/hand cream set kind of scent. Lovely, sweet, and a crowd-pleaser but ultimately not particularly memorable. The floral notes are very realistic and it feels very clean to wear. It also lasts absolutely ages if you get any on your clothes, which was a very nice surprise!

What a non-event! I have to echo msrochambeau's sentiment below -- all I can smell is generic hotel bar soap. I was incredibly surprised, since I love white florals and this fragrance is so highly regarded (at least going off the ratings and reviews here). Soapy, powdery, and superficial, on me at least this fragrance completely lacks depth and interest. I ordinarily prefer perfumes with a shorter wear, since I rarely want a perfume strong/lingering enough that I can smell myself six+ hours after applying. But this was completely gone within about two hours. Like, even if I put my nose directly against my wrist, I get only the faintest, FAINTEST hint of fragrance. Glad I went for a tester before springing for the full-size!

I was looking forward to trying this as it's reviewed very positively by two perfume reviewers I follow and I love the smell of orange blossom irl, which to me, smell quite sweet and a bit like night-blooming jasmine. I was pretty perplexed after receiving a sample because it smelled familiar in a way I wasn't expecting, like something I've smelled in a hospital, or some kind of medical setting. There's a chalky soapiness, due to the musk perhaps, and something almost metallic and medicinal, maybe the neroli?

L'Artisan Parfumeur offers free samples on their site for the cost of shipping, so I picked one up to try. What surprised me most about this one is how linear it is — from the initial spray to three hours later, it smells virtually identical throughout. It's fine, but not really for me. The soapiness in particular gives it an old-fashioned quality that I can't quite get past.

Over the years, L'Artisan Parfumeur has become one of my all-time favourite niche houses. I own so many of their scents already, so being an orange blossom lover I just had to try Histoire d'Orangers. I do like Histoire d'Orangers, even love it, but it doesn't stand out to me at all. It does smell like a clone of Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino, just a little less heavy on the citrus accords. I already own L'Artisan Parfumeur's other well-known orange blossom fragrance, Seville L'Aube and I admittedly prefer it over and above Histoire d'Orangers. Histoire d'Orangers is a really pretty, basic interpretation of orange blossom and neroli. It smells like a dew-kissed, fresh bouquet of orange blossoms with a hint of chemical ambroxan and musk. It has been composed beautifully, but I just feel that it is a little too linear for my personal tastes. I would recommend Histoire d'Orangers for Spring and Summer wear. It would suit almost any occasion due to its versatility. Histoire d'Orangers would also make a beautiful bridal fragrance, especially for those celebrating their nuptials in a garden-type setting. I so wish that I loved this fragrance more. L'Artisan Parfumeur very rarely disappoints me, but with this recent release, they've just missed the mark. Perhaps if I hadn't tried Seville L'Aube my expectations wouldn't have been so high.

This is a perfectly nice orange flowers fragrance on a base of musk, that comes with a spoiler (ambroxan) at the very end. It has a lovely fresh Néroli that starts it off, but don’t get too fond of it because this pop of brightness and intensity doesn’t last long and quickly morphs into a pleasantly musky kind of unisex orange blossom, featuring both a little soap and a little musk but nothing too intense and nothing that reads either overtly feminine or masculine. It’s nice and stays around a lot longer than you might expect or even want though due to the addition of that ambroxan, which is very present in the dry down and lingers on by itself on the skin for literal days, as it usually does. This brings to mind something about fish and house guests. Anyway, in its initial first hours this is a perfect work place or event fragrance as people will notice it and like it but it won’t overwhelm them. The problem is the hangover it leaves you with, caused by ambroxan, which I feel had nothing to do with the actual fragrance. It’s a plus one meant to give the fragrance staying power that lingers on forever after the orange and musk etc has left the building, and you literally can’t kick it out.

I am allways on the lookout for a great fresh orange blosom or Neroli cologne. I have tried many my favorite is MFK Petit Matin. From the notes listed I thought it would be something like other Neroli cologns I've tried, but I was very surprised when I tried my sample. It's extremely feminine for one, then it doesn't smell remotely like any Neroli or orange blosom I have ever tried in 300 reviews. It is very floral, a white floral, more like magnolia than orange blosom. Some aldehyes used well here. It smells very fresh and slightly fruity, the freshness doesn't feel citrusy. It smells very distinct, well blended, high quality. My girl friend may love this. And woman if you looking for a unique fresh white floral fragrance, that is substantive, give this a try. L'Artisan Histoire d'Orangers is the very gothest orange blossom. If you could distill all the words in every language for "melancholia," capture the essence of a flick of heavy black eyeliner, or bottle the resonance of a sorrowful minor chord, that would sum up this perfume. It's the poetry of abandoned orange groves at twilight, their spectral blossoms an incense of Saudade, Sehnsucht, or Mono no aware. For those moments when you long to wrap yourself in a tremulous sublimity of sadness, to revel in the exquisite pain of being achingly alive in a world that's always slipping away. I'm aware this is the biggest, corniest cliche you've ever heard, but as a Florida goth awash in perpetual summertime glooms, I don't know what else to tell you.

Ok this is a funny one for me. I dabbed this on my t-shirt in a couple of spots and on my scalp. For the first 6-7 hours it smelled exactly like expensive hand soap. I love smelling like soap but for some reason this soap was slightly annoying me. It reminded me of a bar of soap that has been used for a long time and it smelled slightly chalky and bitter the way soaps do when there is just a small piece of soap left. Okay so after the 7 hours it transformed into something super sexy. Like ridiculously sexy. And I smell it just as strongly as I did 8-9 hours ago. I am sure this will make my pillow smell amazing in the morning.

Sultry and darkly inclined with a luminous wash of neroli and orange blossom giving it a lit-from-within radiance. It gives me the impression of being within a sumptuous velvet-draped room with one golden beam of late afternoon light shining onto a steaming cup of tea, grand curliques hypnotising me into a quiet, trace-like state. It's a night-time creature in a perpetual spotlight; a contradiction of luminous and shadowy. It's Ambroxan-Orange Blossom dominant, linear over it's 2 - 3 hours of life and remains interesting and beautiful throughout. It is a special sort of person who can smell those wonderful orange blossoms. I think i can smell them in Houbigant's Fleur d'Oranger or Serge Lutens, but maybe it's the tuberose that i smell more in those. And when i smell the blooming citrus trees (i have five of my own) and purple flower bushes and greening trees that waft across the air in Arizona, it smells heavenly and i want to wear that fragrance. But In the case of L'Artisans Histoire d'Orangers, i smell a big nothing. So the search goes on. :)

No-Fi's and StellaDiverFlynn's reviews below already say everything I wanted to say about Histoire d'Orangers. It's a beautiful dry orange blossom scent without the cloying sweetness neroli can have if not handled carefully. Neroli and ambroxan linger in the drydown. Scent usually gives me a good 4 hours of pure neroli/orange blossom heaven, very realistic. The green notes are perfect from the white tea. Surprised they did not use petitgrain. Absolutely beautiful and full bottle worthy indeed.

I’m new to perfume and trying very hard to single out the individual notes so I understand what I’m smelling. I love neroli and white tea but there is something very unpleasant underneath this I can’t put my finger on. It sort of muffles the high energy neroli down into something dull and oppressive. Some reviews say there’s something animalistic in it, maybe that’s what I don’t like? Maybe I don’t like ambroxen?

I so wanted to like this as I've always had good and great experiences with anything from L'Artisan. However, on me, this just smells of regular bathroom bar soap and goes nowhere until it fades, which is rather quickly. I get no tea or tonka just flat soapiness. I'm beginning to realize that Neroli may not be a note that works for me.

Wow, this is the perfect neroli. I had to look up what makes neroli different from orange blossom, considering they come from the same tree. Then I had to look up petitgrain and it became a whole perfumery rabbit hole. Anyway, this L'Artisan offering is divine. The perfect mix of tart and sweet, zing and softness.

very lovely, gently sweet, extremely subtle white floral with musk. it is not an orange blossom bomb by any means, but it does have a sunny, creamy profile. all of the comparisons to lotion/soap are spot on.
