Whip (2014)

I love traditional French perfumery and under the radar (in the United States) houses with deep French heritage like Le Galion and Galimard peak my interest, particularly vintage. I'm testing a 10 year old decant from a friend and my first impression is that the quality and construction is great. Adjacent to Eau Sauvage yes, ingredients sourced from and made in Grasse in smaller batches. Although Dior no doubt uses good quality ingredients (lavender from Vaucluse, Egyptian jasmine, etc,.) it feels a little less personal and artisan than Galimard. Both are great, but this vintage has the edge.

Whip is an absolute delight! It’s like wearing the most delicious lemon sorbet......refreshing, mouthwateringly lemony with herbal green notes cutting through for balance. It has a pleasant, vintage vibe to it, sharing a lot of its DNA with Eau Sauvage. Long lasting for a citrus fragrance, at least on my skin. I wear it year round and with great pleasure!

Beautiful green fragrance. Not my type of scent but it's a nice work by Galion house. I can smell the lemons notes and the green notes like vetiver, tarragon and lavender. Perfect for hot and humid seasons. Intended for men but women can make it their own. It's a true lemon btw 😉 💙 More Male 🔥 Hot & Humid Seasons 📌 Personal Note: 8.5 / 10

Beautiful classic "eau chyprée". Icy freshness on top, then complexity enters with flowers, spices and woods until the mossy dry-down. A bit vintage but quite timeless and wonderful with a white linen shirt. Compared to Eau Sauvage : more complex, less smooth, more messy and less minimalistic.

It opens as a fresh citrus. Very reminiscent of perfumes like Monsieur Balmain. The other ingredients kick in after a while but by that time it becomes very weak. I have tried several Le Galion fragrances on paper and it fades faster than the others. It smells very nice but longevity seems quite poor considering the price.

the resurrection of this French brand is the best news of the year. All their perfumes are really beautiful creations, delightfully classic. They compete with Guerlain quality or Rochas. Here in this case is very similar to Eau de Rochas. For me it's even better.

The initial blast of citrus reminds me of the original YSL Pour Homme. This is followed by a combination of lavender and vetiver, all quite soft and subtle. This lasted a dismal 4 hours on me despite spray both wrist, chest, neck and back of the neck. I tend to lean towards stronger lavender and vetiver scents such as Caron Pour Un Homme or Chanel Sycomore or Encre Noir by Lalique. Given the niche price and its misleading name "Whip", one would expect something long lasting that smells animalic or leathery. None of that! It is simply fresh and soapy. There are certainly a million options out there for half the price.

This is my second review of a selection of perfume from the wonderful Le Galion house. This one, for men and women. Slightly masculine, but interesting. The initial opening for me was a really bright citrus, and the same intriguing sparkle that I noticed in my first try at "Special for Gentlemen". Lemons peek out as an elegant lavender nods it's head. Cardamon and lavender join in as the fragrance warms on my wrists and neck. After 5 minutes or so, I start to notice a zesty, spicy note and the fragrance changes again. I am surprised at how quickly this joyous perfume morphs into telling me that, "I am a strong woman who means business!" It has a similar airy note like "Special for Gentlemen" and smells slightly salty - like clean sweat from a good workout. Now the spices are warming up - tarragon, faint, but insistent. A very quick change again. Now it smells like a brand new, fine leather bag that I have stored away for better days. There is a tiny bit of sweetness to the very clean leather scent, but thankfully, nothing like the modern, sugar rush garbage that makes a popular bottle on our beauty store shelves. At this point I went to work in the garden, pottering about for a few hours. The luscious scent is still on my wrists, despite washing up, washing and re-washing my hands and arms! Dare I say this... at this point, it is reminiscent of spending a few hours in the arms of a very handsome man - naughty! Not a lot of imagination needed. A beautiful creation. I did not expect anything like this when I spritzed this morning. How amazing is that?!!!

Whip has an opening that's just like a refreshing citrus cologne (citron, bergamot, lemon verbena). It's like splashing myself with lemon sorbet, just slightly greener. This citrus opening lasts about half an hour or so. By then, the woodier herbal notes of thyme, tarragon, and vetiver have come to the foreground, capturing the smell on your fingertips just after you've run your hand through the bushes of a typical herb garden. Whip is well made with good quality ingredients. It smells fresh, herbal and not muddy at all.

I tried three of the re-introduced Le Galion fragrances recently and of the three Whip is possibly the one that I was least impressed with. Don't get me wrong, it's a refined citrus-powder progression, although I was less enamoured of the soliflores in the middle and I found the lemon burst at the start slightly overwhelming and one-note. It's a tad old-fashioned, maybe, and it feels sort of... unnecessary, like nothing we haven't seen before, and a bit meh - but still a solid and respectable effort, I guess.

I am surprised that this is being compared to Eau Sauvage... the current version of this smells next to identical to Chanel's Pour Monsieur EDT once the initial citrus opening drys down. I have an official 2 ml sample I got when I purchased my bottle of Le Galion Sang Bleu and I also own Pour Monsieur EDT. Side by side they are almost identical the only differences being that this is slightly more citrusy acidic whereas Pour Monsieur is more soapy neroli. This is also a heck of a lot more lemon forward
