Impressive, spicy and sweet. Opens with sweet lime, bergamot and jasmine ... joined by a big blast of spices and impressive cinnamon ... and the hot/cold interplay runs for hours ... then a warm, inviting dry-down with cedar, vanilla and musk. A rare, zesty, fantastic evening/date scent!

This is for Le Copains Homme (1990). What we have here is a curiosity of sorts, as Les Copains decided to release a pine-artemisia-castoreum chypre a la Yatagan and Devin with shades of modern ozonic elements courtesy of a couple newer aromachems that hit the scene around this time. The result is quite lovely; sort of a vaguely seaside variation on this theme. There is less density than the other two classics, with more of a hesperidic top note that gets drier and leafier as time progresses, with that ineffable "furriness" of sorts coming into the fore. A cool maritime-like ether sort of 'hovers' above the pine-like artemisia and thyme, and there is an ever so subtle white floral undercurrent. Then there is this balsamic base that is ever so nuzzle-worthy, a chord of peru balsam, styrax, and that castoreum. A winsome wear and virtually unknown.

This review if for Les Copains L'Homme (1998). The opening of cardamom and lime together somehow gives me the impression of grape-flavored Pop Rocks. Fascinating. The spicy sweetness verges on overwhelming, but then settles into this synthetic orange blossom that I recall smelling a lot in the air in the mid 90s. I'm almost getting flashbacks of college classmates in Abercrombie and J. Crew who played lacrosse and soccer. If my memory serves me, some of them wore frags that smelled sort of like this. The vanilln and Iso E Super really began to grate me and I had to wash it off my wrist. This definitely is not as good as the 1990 Les Copains Homme.

This is a review for Les Copains Homme, which was released in 1990. The Estonia fragrance site has the notes for that one as: Basil, thyme, artemisia, bergamot. Laurel, carnation, coriander, peru balsam, geranium, jasmine, rose. Amber, castoreum, leather, moss, patchouli, incense. It's very similar to my "semi-vintage" Yatagan, and my guess is that vintage Yatagan was like this, as it comes across as deeper and richer than the Yatagan bottle I have now. It's not exactly the same but it's so close I wonder how many would care; some may prefer this one to any formulation of Yatagan! This is really strong stuff, so don't let the floral notes fool you, as these are rather mild compared to the other notes.

This is a review for Les Copains Homme to contrast a bit with the esteemed and prolific Bigsly's below. It's definitely very similar to Yatagan, but I find it decidedly worse, as it amplifies the synthetic underpinnings of Yatagan while downplaying Yatagan's interesting sharp edges. Decidedly inferior in every way, imo.
