Poussiere de Rose

(A review originally posted on MakeupAlley in 2005, I wanted to re-post it here now because I do not use MakeupAlley anymore [but have many fond memories of using it] and I am trying to get back into writing reviews, using old 'work' as inspiration...): Known here in Amsterdam as the only rose scent that might last on a man by my favorite SA at Magna Plaza's Shu Uemura Glamour Shop, this is a plummy, mysterious rose. I see where some might find it potpourri-ish, but on me it is spicy and especially plummy--a strange mix that somehow gives the effect of being a purplish red rose. Something perhaps to reach for in an introspective mood, perhaps for artists in search of inspiration, something to catalyze expression on a fresh white page. All the Rosines seem to have a vivid otherworldly quality about them, very visual, like Victoire Gobin Daude's creations, and I love the history of Paul Poiret's 20's fragrances inspiring them, I can almsot see the feathers, sequins, and velvets of an early bohemian dressing room. Poussiere feels contemporary and at the same time nostalgic.

Yum yum yum!!! I found it! A Beautiful gourmand jammy Rose. Sweet, fruity, balmy, can really get the apricots, plums, cedar, cinnamon touch just the right amount. Not too spicy, not too much incense, not too powdery, its just right for me. I want asap!

I can't believe they discontinued this one. Such an inviting, warm, comforting scent. What comes to mind is having a cognac next to a fireplace on a cold fall evening.

A beautiful yellow rose. It is well-balanced, delicious and not too sweet. Perfect for all seasons. Another favourite of mine from this perfume house.

Such a lovely rich spicy rose. A lovely perfume. Gorgeous. ladylike and warm, erotic and sensual. I love it.

I've been spending the last few weeks going through my perfume inventory/hoard and pulling out stuff I haven't worn in a while. I started the day with one no one has worn in awhile: Laura Ashley No 2. It had to have discontinued as early as maybe 1999. I bought it for the first time at the end of its run, only to determine the scent was really quiet. Well today, probably 19 years later, it's not even there. It might as well be yellow water in an understated round bottle. So on to Poussiere de Rose. I must have bought this around 2005, probably soon after it came out. I love Rosine scents and bought nearly every one of them in that era, largely because there were hardly any samples ever for sale on eBay and stores didn't have them here either. So if you wanted to smell it, you bought a bottle from NYC or wherever online. And the notes are me all over: I'm all about rose, cinnamon, tea, incense, cedar, amber. Opoponax, and benzoin, sure why not. Well as we all know or will learn soon, what can be a dark rosy woody bomb with those notes can also be a frothy fruity powdery confection that nearly makes your teeth ache. That's the realm of possibility, the spectrum. General opinion: it's way too femmie for me. Way too much fruit and way too sweet. The powder effect keeps it from being a gooey cloying scent, and it isn't chalky but it's just a frou frou scent. I was expecting all that incense and cedar to give me a rosy incense bomb, but the incense just precariously holds everything together. I was expecting a dark rosy incense bomb and instead got a light rosy fizzy sparkler. Huge projection though, good if you like the scent. And it clings to your skin for 6 hours at least. Edit: It's at least 8 hour now, and it's still there. It's not horrible though. Lots of women like sweet frothy fruity scents with some rosy notes, and this is just the thing for them.

This “rose dust” EdP is certainly rose-based, at least when first applied. However, it almost immediately takes on a note that to me is green, slick and oily, like a barrel of snakes slithering around, not dusty at all. At that point I thought that it was going to disappear entirely, but it got a second wind and came back with a lot of fuzzy rose sillage, a little more like what I expected. It then takes on a pronounced fruity note, becoming something like a fruit compote flavored with rosewater, “green tea” accord and violet. Then something strange happens. The violet swells up to monstrous proportions, producing a powerful cloud of lightly rose-scented, slightly powdery, old-fashioned violet sillage. So it’s not rose dust, it’s a violet-scented powder once it shuffles through all of its disguises. The violet sillage is absolutely amazing in its strength, and it lasts and lasts. This is the first Rosine perfume I’ve tried, and I have to say that it’s quite an introduction. I'm not sure I'd ever want to wear it, though.

This is really a quality perfume. While I am not a die hard fan of the rose note itself - I love it combined w/ other notes - I like powdery fragrances. This is a powdery rose, but it has enough depth to get you addicted! Mind you, this is nothing like these joyful fruity maistream scents. Poussière de rose is not a "ready to wear" to my opinion. It is a fragrance that deserves a minute of tought and consideration before wearing it... As others have noted, this is a spicy rose, smells like these Christmas cookies with cinnamon and candied fruits, and a lot of powdery iris. It is easy to visualize a huge, full blossoming vase of English roses near to a tray of pastries and cookies - just waiting to be eaten - and a cinnamon flavored freshly brewed tea. And the English lady hosting the party is there as well, in her pleated skirt and pearl necklace, elegantly sitting. This perfume smells traditions, conservative elegance, style and a certain severity. I like it a lot. Pity that they discontinued it.

First of all, Rosine is a great house for roses leaning towards the more traditional vein of perfumery. Pousierre de Rose is a beautiful and strange creature. On my skin (no underlying lotion) the it is a sweet jammy rose and wood but on my clothes it is a spicy and rosy powder. It has a decent sillage and longevity on both skin and clothes. I would recommend to test this first since this scent on me at least, has two different faces, though both beautiful.

As all the Rosine perfumes, the rose note is predominent and clear. However, this fragrance quickly develops a softness and a larger floral bouquet, less of a "soliflore" note that some of the others in this collection. The dustiness of the name does make itself felt, but not in that "old" dusty library way; rather, the fragrance retains a clarity and a warmth that I had not expected. A soft, delicate floral, rose rounded out and dampened.

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with this scent - from the beginning (slightly crisp citrusy scent) to the heart (floral, powdery and slightly spicy) to the drydown (spiced musky floral and cinnamon scent with a hint of powder). And the staying power is amazing!

This is Lutens' Feminité du Bois combined with a very opulent rose. Not a bad idea at all, but to me (I adore Feminité du Bois) this feels like a quaint mixture. Sillage is good, staying-power also above average.

As is often the case with perfumes from the house of Rosine, I was caught off guard a bit by POUSSIERE DE ROSE. In this case, it just does not seem very powdery to me at all. I must have been expecting something closer to Jean-Charles Brosseau L'OMBRE ROSE. Instead, what I found was a fruity rose, which honestly smelled to me more like black currant than plum. The important point is that this is a nice-smelling fruity rose perfume. It's not the most vibrant fruity rose (see MPG ROSE MUSKISSIME), nor is it the most lush presentation of rose (see Keiko Mecheri MOGADOR), but it's certainly a lot better than the mainstream pink juice being marketed as rose perfumes today. To my nose, POUSSIERE DE ROSE is a high-quality fruity-floral perfume featuring sweet berries along with black currant and rose. It could be violet which is imparting sweetness to this composition, but the overall effect ends up smelling to me like a sweetened black currant rose perfume. I like this creation and would definitely recommend it to younger fruity-floral fragrance wearers looking for a more natural alternative to the mass market options currently available.

I also experienced a slight medicinal note in the opening of this, but it quickly faded into what smelled like soft powdery and faintly sweet rose pot pourri. As someone on whom rose based scents never seem to work, I was ready to write this off, until a short while later this morphed into a subtly spiced rose, with all the notes others mention (tea, fruits incence and cinammon) softly combining into a more interesting scent that I first thought it would be. It's a lovely Rosine, and I have tried a few others which I hated, but I still wouldn't buy a full bottle, not enough wow factor for me. In the very late drydown I swear I can detect a hint of cocoa in this! Which makes it even more interesting, but still not FB worthy for me. UPDATE: OMG what is going on?? the longer this dries down the more pretty it becomes, it is now a beautifully sweet, cocoa-y gourmand rose! It is soft and no longer smells like potpourri. WOW!

Hmm... so, this is a no. To be blunt, as I"m wearing this I feel like Richard Simmons is dancing around me in a mankini. It's that annoying. There is something really harsh here; I don't think it is a note issue (although it is sweet). But it's sweet and abrasive. I can't describe it, but when I take a whiff I think "Ooh Richard, get that hairy chest out of my face" I see some are praising this as a gourmand, which might be why it doesn't work for me. I do get patchouli, yea; and the warmth from sandalwood and amber. My guess is the cinnamon is throwing it off, which hasn't worked before with me.

Jammy, fruity, delicious. Initially rose with berry jam, but not too sweet (thankfully). Later on the cedar and violets kick in. Juliette has a gun mentioned the similarity with Lutens FdB, and I second that. I have FdB myself, but feel the need for Pousierre de Rose as well. Late drydown, this is even more beautiful, when the musk starts to whisper it ́s seductive phrases. Soft like-your-skin-but-better. Definitely FBW, for me :)

The best 20 euros I have spent lately is on the sample pack (20 x 2 ml) from Les Parfums de Rosine. Trying them all out and giving them scores out of 10 has kept me occupied for two months. This one, however, I only scored at 6/10, there is a medicinal top note with, obviously from the name, a powdery dry down that I didn't really like, though worn to the full Latin mass on Sundays, I found an occasion to suit it.

I wish I'd gotten more of the notes in this one. It was very very cloyingly powdery on me, almost like baby powder, a scent I dislike intensely. So this didn't work for me at all.

Specific boldy and rosy scent. Didnt love it. I have a feeling that not all the notes are listed. Creator is keeping a small secret whats actually in it.
