Patchouli

Nowadays the art of perfumery seems to be easy seeing the large numbers of scents that are released every day. I find a lot them focused much on the opening and the first minutes of the scent as if they were composed only to trick the customer into a quick buy. Obviously an effective way for a company to make quick money. You launch an enormous load of scents of which you know wont last but will sell for a moment for no other reason then that they are new and therefor perceived exciting. Fooled by marketing the buyer however is now left with yet another impuls buy. One that was only useful for that short moment of euphoria in the shop. Soon interest is lost because of the lack of genuinity, personality, artistry, beauty and so this new exciting scent is collecting dust untill you throw it out. There is a reason why perfume shops at airports, from a money making point of view, do so well. People are excited and under time pressure, easily tricked into buying something. Shamefully dishonest really that it became as so many other things this way. Personally it feels I often have to dig through a whole lot of screaming bullshit to get to the thing that is real and actually is worth my attention and money. However the gems are still there and my recent purchase of Patchouli by Lorenzo Villoresi is certainly one of those. It was not perse love at first sight. Patchouli is a difficult one. It has enormous character. It is unruly. It has spikes and it stings. Raw patchouli oil is not easy if not impossible to wear as a perfume. To make it wearable you have to tame or round those spikes a bit. You can do this in different ways. I have seen it done with the addition of a hefty dose of vanilla or recently they managed to fine extract the patchouli to it’s hart, cutting away all the spikes. You can do that and as a supporting note in eg Benjoin Bohème/Diptyque this is probably appropriate. Allthough, if you want true patchouli and you want to name your perfume “Patchouli” then I like to get the whole experience. Not a rose without its thorns and not a cat undone with its nails and teeth. Encaged patchouli is boring. Anything encaged is sad and boring. Lorenzo Villoresi created a Patchouli that stays true to the raw material. It is made wearable with some lavender which brings a little sweetness (on my skin). The tiny dose of benjoin is just enough to calm the patchouli a little bit.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I have loved patchouli since I first smelled it as a teen. All hippie connotations aside, I think it is a fascinating, complex, earthy magical aroma that shape shifts as time goes by. Thus, I have been looking for a fragrance that captures that rawness, while adding a little something to elevate and elongate the visceral charms of patchouli. Enter Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli. It takes a very natural patchouli, and adds little twinkles of balance through it's lifespan that add a warmth and spice to it, without adding any vanilla or sweetness that I tend to detest in other patchoulis. The wet, earthy, primal brilliance of patchouli is there from beginning to end, but the other notes come and go beautifully as during the different stages. Never do any of the notes outshine the patchouli base, but only complement it...it is very well blended to my nose in that way. After I got a sample of this, I immediately got a full bottle from a discounter. Somewhat to my disappointment the full bottle seems a bit more watered down than my sample. It is still lovely, but it seems I have to do 5-6 sprays to get the same performance from my sample. At the less than $100 USD I paid for it for 100ml, still a deal in my book, and the scent is still captured in my full bottle. Just a curious question if the full bottle is a different formulation, or if it suffered from poor storage, or maybe it needs to time to age. Unclear. Either way, the sample and full bottle don't project a ton after the first hour or two on me. However, the same fantastic scent stays with me closely for a full day. It smells nice enough that it could disappear completely after an hour, and I would just respray to transport myself to a different time/place. This is the magic of this fragrance to me: It takes my imagination to places past, present, and future. Like a stream of light pooling through the dusty recesses of my mind.

For those who really enjoy a savory patchouli. To my taste patchouli smells best wrapped in a woody, bitter, herbal, acrid, smokey, incense ensemble. It's frustrating to have my favorite note smothered in syrupy sweetness just to accommodate those who don't like the patchouli note's real earthiness. I had to read the notes here to detect lavender but then smelled it again and could pick it out, but it's a subtle feature here in the opening, but becomes more detectable in the dry down. A bitter, herbal, acrid, minty-benzoin it what distinguishes this from other patchouli forward offerings. I had been looking for a long time for a replacement for my signature scent--Tom Ford Patchouli Absolu, which is uniquely fantastic, but also uniquely priced, especially now as a discontinued collector's item. The Tom Ford Brand was always overpriced but I tolerated that because he made my 2 favorite scents--Patchouli Absolu and Tobacco Oud--but it was always aggravating to buy. I don't mind paying for artistic creation but fancy brand hype is stupid to pay for. I am very happy to have this one. Which I like for similar reasons as Patchouli Absolu. And in fact I really like it's differences. It's sharper, more bitter. Thanks to the creator for making somethings so tasteful, distinctive, and comfortably masculine, at a decent price. It would smell good on a woman too. I just mean that I would never wear something flowery or sweet or something for a club-going young man and this suits me as an older man with distinctive tastes. It has elevated to my daily signature scent. And something I can afford to use that often without feeling guilt about a personal indulgence, adding to the happiness of wearing it.

Many times the law of less is more is fulfilled and this patchwork of Villoresi attests that this is so. The fragrance revolves in its entirety to this beautiful note of perfumery, monolithic in appearance, but rich in nuances, it never ceases to amaze me every time I spray it on my wrists and think: "This really smells spectacular, this patchwork is a round composition, it is perfectly elaborated and also has the right measure in its evolution without boredom, without shrillness, since the chromatic richness of the note is recreated and left over by itself . Start with undeclared citrus nuances and a subtle lavender to which spicy notes are added, preparing the soil of the seductive patchouli, the sensation is warm, earthy, deep, full-bodied, which takes you directly to explore the feeling of a lot of oriental woods, woods accompanied by balsamic touches, sweet, smoked facets, and a musk that enhances even more the wonderful roundness of the composition. I find it inspiring and I feel as if the forest is beating, as if I breathed in a subtle way, as if a soft grip of earth were installed in my nostrils and offered me the most poetic of that feeling of the note. Villoresi has good fragrances, but none has seduced my senses as much as this "simple" and so forceful Patchouli. Rating: 9.2

When I try to place Lorenzo Villoresi in my mental board of fragrances I always have it easy to find its own spot as "quality fragrances, premium ingredients, very classic themes done with a high dose of elegance". His one-ingredient named frags (Sandalo, Patchouli, Vetiver) are my best samples when showing friends, i.e. "ok, this is what a good patchouli is". Of course Lorenzo blends with other things and my fellows here have done a super job describing so, but the first impact is "oosh this is the pure thing!!" in a grand manner. So back to this fragrance, you need to love patchouli without "but..." to like this as it is a true picture of this wonderful plant. Very unisex (know you'll be perceived as a film star with this, it is very diva/o style) and timeless although it has an amount of classisism that people who only like modern trends will be too challenged to wear. I would definitely be so happy if more people chose these jewels... I personally prefer Mazzolari's stellar Patchouli although I would definitely reach for this more often.. the Mazzolari is a precious tiger hard to tame.

At first spray the top notes are a little sharp and peppery, there was no sweetness to this as I would have expected from a patchouli fragrance, initially it smells quite masculine, however, once it has settled, the heart of the scent becomes sweeter and that unmistakable smell of musc which works so well with patchouli takes over and this scent then becomes more feminine in its sweetness. The dry down is a lovely woody patchouli aroma which is spicy and a little bit sweet. The blend of this scent is very good and sillage is good, however, it didn't last long on my skin at all and I can't even smell it on my clothes. My conclusion is that this is a wonderful classy perfume which uses expensive and well blended herbs, spices and florals but may not last that long on everyone. If you like patchouli, try this perfume, it's a classic!

Opens as a damp/earthy patchouli (what...really?), and dry downs a bit cleaner (with a subtle chocolate-y facet) and shy support of cedar (and possibly vetiver). In the drydown it calms down, and will become a bit 'cleaner'. Great performance on my skin, with great projection for the first 2 hours, moderate for another 3-4 hours, for a total life of 10-12 hours... rare enough (for me) to be underlined. It is quite linear (don't expect the show of Atman Xaman or Ambra), but why should it be differently since it is so enjoyable as is? Overall a 'hippie patch' fragrance as close at it gets to pure patchouli oil, so if this is what you're looking for, your quest could be deemed complete with this one. A beautiful one,standing in between Jovoy Psychedelique (top) and Zegna Javanese Patchouli (base). Villoresi hits again!

This as a somewhat fresher, cleaner patchouli. The vetiver, sandalwood, musk and other notes work well together. Other patchouli’s such as Jovoy Psychedelique, Il Profumo Patchouli Noir, Nobile 1942 Patchouli Nobile, Nicolai Patchouli Intense, Reminiscence Patchouli and Montale Patchouli Leaves are all too heavy and sweet in my opinion. I heard that performance used to be better and it does seem quite weak for a patchouli. If you can grab it for under $100 otherwise I'd say it's not worth it due to performance. My favorite is still Santa Maria Novella Patchouli.

One of the 3 best dry patchouli fragrances in the market along F.Malle's Monsieur and Dyptique's Tempo. I had ordered a sample last month.After testing it I immediately ordered a full bottle. Smells as if you have just pulled off the patchouli plant with its roots and soil on it from earth. Makes you feel like you wake up in the morning in a cottage right in the middle of an indonesian patchouli plant and opening the window of your bedroom to a spring dawn inhaling just harvested patchouli damp in the chilly freshness of an earthy spring morning air.

Damn! I spilt the decant while it's really hard to buy either a full bottle or a genuine decant, and my palm and fingers are shimmering with a layer of essential oil and I don't wanna wash my hands! It has the medicinal, woody and earthy (and slightly spicy) characters of patchouli without much sweetness. It's not bitter either. I don't understand why most of the comments I read elsewhere shout it's bitter like hell. On blotter it's more medicinal yet as entrancing. Average logevity and projection.

One for the purist. This was a blind buy as a gift for a big patchouli fan, who even prefers the oil. Well it was worth every scent (pardon the pun). Very authentic patchouli like the old days. The smell is cool, wet, earthy even a fussy nose is happy. The most 'patchouliest' of all patchouli perfumes ive tried. Recommend to patch fans for sure. Scent 9.5/10 Longevity 9/10 Sillage 8/10

Another great masterpiece from the master himself. Get this: you're alone on a chilly autumn night, the wind gently caresses your nose and you can smell the damp and alluring season through each and every particle the air has to offer. Cool, damp, refreshing, moist, green, mouldy, ominous, enchanting, mysterious. It hits your inner core like a vampire trying to steal you in the night.

This might sound overly effusive, but I will agree with the previous reviewer (and not only them), that this might be one of the finest patchouli-centric perfumes out there. It showcases that ingredient in such a way and maintains an aesthetic of elegance and comfort. Outstanding in both conception and performance.

Patchouli by Lorenzo Villoresi is all about earthy vibes with a spicy kick. It’s rich, damp, and a little smoky, like a forest after rain. The lavender and honeyed hints add a soft touch, but it stays bold and moody. If you’re into patchouli, this one’s a total standout.

This stunned me, opening is average patch aroma, same scent as Molinard, but the magic is in the drydown, wow smell of rain! Edit: Rather very short duration and fleeting, almost unusable, 3 points shorter 7/10

Mea Culpa V Canto = Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli

Patchouli is one of the most amazing natural notes found in nature. It's complex, earthy, medecinal, chocolatey, boozy etc. That's why it makes sense to make a patchouli dominant fragrance such as this. I also just received "Classic Patchouli" which is a great, rich, sweet and earthy patchouli. Lorenzo is embellished here with nice supporting notes of lavender and benzoin resin, and musk is a main player. I like Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli better, but both are very good and worth having both, as they are quite different. I just sprayed this generously for the first time, and I got many more facets, and was able to pick out more notes. It does have a boozy chocolatey vib, and I picked up on a great smoky facet of the patch here. Wow, I am becoming a patchouli fan, it is so multi faceted and deeply earthy. This is more truly niche. Meaning it's not going to please most people or even some Patchouli lovers. It is more camphorous and medecinal, more minty, herbal and green than the way most patchoulis are. Someone said it smells like a dank musty old attick, cold. My first impression was, that's right-on. There's much more to it than a musty attick. I am discovering something new and wonderfull about this complex and multi faceted fragrance/ Patchouli each time I wear it. This is fresh, and goes soo we'll with my skin. I never said that in 400 reviews, but I get that now. It's like I'm smelling my skin and it's making a very nice and personal fragrance accord with my skin, feeling very comfortable with it. I've had this for a week, and I find myself reaching for it a lot. I like medecinal fragrances, like the eucalyptus in Creed Royal Mayfair, the Oud in MFK Cashmire Oud. This has a rich, wet medecinal patchouli aspect. All the other notes are just nuances that embelish the quality patchouli, and add to it's complexity. Wheras Classic Patchouli and many others balance the strong earthy patch smell with sweetness and vanilla. Lorenzo Villoresi does it with a hint of lavender, and a nuances of benzoin resin. The musk and rooty vetiver blend seamlessly with the herbal patch, but don't distract from the Patchouli being center stage. For a great patch dominant fragrance, that adds other notes in a good way, I have Diptyque Tempo. When I just want to enjoy a great, pure patchouli, this is the best ! I'm not a big patchouli fan but i really enjoyed this Opens with a rich spicy aromatic patchouli that come off very thick with honeyed nuances It soon develops earthy qualities but it also remains spicy and aromatic Vetiver and oakmoss in the base accentuate the already present earthy notes (from the patchouli itself) and make them damp, as if the fragrance was reating on damp soil As it's drying it's gradually becoming less spicy but it remains thick almost stickey with the honey undertones and aromatic with accompanying lavender

Earthy, damp, wet, dark and rich. These are the words that can be used to describe how PATCHOULI smells. It indeed is a true masterpiece for those who enjoy earthy-hippy patchouli in their fragrances. Lavender and musk are used perfectly to enhance patchouli and make this perfume a bit more complex. Perfectly unisex as there is dryness and masculinity from the vetiver and musky sweetness for the females. It did last only 6 hours on me though.

No need to explain that If you hate patchouli this is your sworn enemy But to the patch lovers especially dirty patch it’s a very well made scent The only problem I faced is it come and goes and after a couple of hours my nose gets used to it What I can assure is the quality here It’s as good as the more expensive patchouli dominant fragrances If you like earthy patch it’s a must try although I must warn you it is nothing unique

First impression: I get the same sort of patchouli as Profumum Roma Patchouly, with a hit of aromatic green lavender, this one is lighter, i get the chocolate cake vibe, but it has a fresh, elegant woody twist to it.

A good, honest blast of patchouli slightly mellowed by other notes ( a la Santa Maria Novella).

Naked dry patchouli. Definitely for hippies. I'm not a hippie and wear this conservatively.

Lovely, pure patchouli opening without being musty or dusty. The drydown is magical though Edit: this comment was made in regards to a sample I have been testing. Having bought a full bottle I have to say that whatever is in that bottle does not resemble the sample I had in any way. It's a cheap, thin patchouli scent, no added notes distinguishable and it lasts for about an hour. I guess this has been reformulated quite dramatically. Judging from this and also the poor quality of bottle, label and box I have to strongly recommend to stay away from this perfume and don't waste your money. It's a shame because the sample I had was gorgeous

I've ordered a sample of this perfume thinking: "i like patchouli, i like vetiver, oakmoss, cedar, musk and lavender. What could go wrong?" Well... everything! I am sorry to all people that enjoy this fragrance. This is MY point of view based on MY experience. It is so sharp and pungent that my nose almost bleeds. On my skin it smells like mold. A thick and nauseating mold. My skin almost fell off after scrubbing my arm 3 times and this fragrance is still on my arm, mocking me. Bravo to those who can wear this perfume (and smell amazing on them)!

I love patchouly, but I feel this one misses the point. It starts with a blast, it is as strong as the oily stuff we used to buy in the '70 from "oriental" bazaars. Here, though, instead of flowers in his hair, your hippy wears leather overalls and brass knuckles. Sadly, my untrained nose does not get the musk, the sandalwood, or my beloved vetiver. I get a cold menace (funny how the innocent lavender can be tweaked to be cruel) that luckily retreats closer to skin after 40 minutes and then fades drily, insalutato hospite.

I will be unfair here, reviewing a patchouli scent even though I do not like patchouli unless it is very clean: this perfume here is dirty and nasty and awfully strong. Thanks but no thanks. Now having tried even the "best" and "purest" patchouli scent, I believe I can confidently give up on the genre altogether.

Very nice. And I concur that it's similar to Santa Maria Novella's Patchouli. It's as if Villoresi bought a keg of the SMN and used it as a base. This one has many additional nuances that hang like a perfumey haze around the tart, green, very natural smelling patchouli. It smells to me like patchouli and palo santo smoke. Or if you're familiar with the smell of pinching ground sandalwood for incense, then imagine you have picked and crushed patchouli leaves with your fingers and then taken a few pinches of ground sandalwood. Then you smell your fingers. Performance is actually quite good, and although the patchouli and sandalwood/palo santo seem to me equally weighted, when I've worn this my partner always comments something along the lines of, "Mmmm, you smell like our house after burning the wood sticks." What he means is the smell of burned palo santo in a hundred-year-old-house. And I realize he's right -- some hours after spraying this, I smell as if I've fumigated my closet and then picked out my clothes.

Les contes noir. If I wrote a book about this perfume, I would name it "Black stories" (Les contes noir). The perfume as its made of blackness. The perfume is magical. The strongest and sharpest patchouly that I have tried so far. The perfume opens as it has mint in it, something very tempting. It is actually a lavender which gives unusual opening mixed with patchouli. After fresh opening comes the patchouly which is hard to describe. Dense prickly refined mixture. The patchouly stayed until the end. The perfume is linear and does not change much. This perfume needs a personality which can handle him. This is the patchouly in its "Black" issue with notes of lavender, which is only nominally here because it spreads like a dried mint. Vetiver is only sensible when the perfume has fully developed on the skin. It is used dry vetiver which is also strong as the patchouly. I will not talk about longivity and projection because I think that everything is clear... And so the black story ends..

مثل بقیه عطرهای ویلورسی، یه عطر با سبک کارهای قدیمی، که ازش لذت بردم. ساده، آرام، نوستالژیک، یه تفسیر درست حسابی و سر راست از پچولی. اینجا به اندازه کافی رو این نت کار شده تا بسادگی قابل پوشیدن باشه، مقدار مناسبی هم حس طبیعت خاکی و ارگانیک به همراه داره. دیگه چیزی که بخواد آکورد پچولی رو قوی تر کنه یا تعادلش بهم بزنه اینجا نیست، این عطر چندین منظر از آکورد پچولی رو نمایش میده، از حالت خاک/خزه مانند تا بُعد تنباکویی اون. یه نسیمِ بالسامیکِ ظریف به همراهی گل ها، اون خشکی و خشونت ذاتی پچولی رو فرو مینشونه. بیسی ملایم از چوب صندل داره که مقداری چوب سدر اون رو همراهی میکنه. ساده، سطح بالا، همچنین مقداری خامی و نپختگی نت ها بطوری حساب شده و بی نقص تو این عطر است. به سبک کارهای قدیمی، از نوع کاملاً خوبش. و ویلورسی یکی از بهترین هاست وقتی درمورد این نوع عطرها صحبت میشه. بعنوان یکی از علاقمندان رایحه پچولی، این کار رو یکی از قابل اعتماد ترین و خوب ترین های موجود در بازار می دونم. یه عطر امضای ویژه نیست، بیشتر یه رایحه ی راحتِ برای "دل خودت" تو یه عصر جمعه ی بیحال.

Lavander, Sandalwood at max then comes the patchouli and the sandalwood as the background, but above them all there is something weird in here that takes control of my head! something freaky, something medical, and something drug-full! it makes me kind of numb and relaxed allot out of my league! it's not something that calms me down but something strucks me and numbs me down! i hope it's not a drug cause it surely appears so. all i can say it's a plant but not sure yet wither if it's Weed, Joint, Marijuana, or whatever. and to put it clearer, it's the essence that i smell each time im visiting a patient in a hospital, specially the hallway to their rooms.

Great patchouli, one of the best I've tried, with a natural feeling. It smells like old wet wood, like moisture in a closed basement. Good performance. Unfortunately I don't love the lavender opening, it's somehow old-fashioned and lack anything original or special. It's a pity, because the base is one of the best. This perfume deserves a renewed version and would be great. Good price, though, good for daily use. EDIT: Bought a bottle and was far more camphorous than the decant, overwhelming and covering up any nouances. Maybe it gets better with aging, maybe just different ingredients...

I have a recurring fixation about patchouli. Here it comes again... To be honest, Villoresi was always my least favorite patchouli scent, mostly due to the sharp, cold and slightly wet [like in a cellar] beginning. But recently I gave it one last chance and I... soaked in so badly ;] Forget about the beginning, for how it changes later! THIS is the note I always loved and waited for in perfumes: the dry, sandal-woody, herbal patchouli - found in many bases, now strong, dominating and in one bottle. I must have it. Must soon.

Rooty, earthy and dirty patch but I find there’s also a breath of fresh air somewhere in its drydown, something marine and salty as it evolves on my skin. This is not a plain or boring one and that’s good. Basically it reminds me of the powerful smell of camphor and lavender sachets that lingers on some high quality linen bed sheets, leaving me with the idea of a rough pureness. This is something I could fall in love with as soon as I finish debating with myself if this is too manly for a girl. For now it’s a big like.

I bought my bottle years ago, and I'm finally getting around to reviewing it. Like any great patchouli, Villoresi's is damp and earthy, but there are also some woody notes in there to add sparkle and stability to the fragrance. It starts out woody and herbal, but it gets deeper and darker over time, leaving you with the smell of fresh soil. If you only want to buy one patchouli fragrance for your collection, this is the one to get. Plus it's nice and strong, and lasts all day. A perfect A+ from me!

Shit. Im not a patchouli fan at all but this here is something else. I get raw patchouli and lavender. Im gonna get comments like wtf are you smelling but this wears really clean on me. I get nothing dark or damp. Right out of a hot shower this feels really cool on the skin and is extremely embracing. Im loving this. Performance is perfect. Not too overwhelming with 3 or 4 sprays but people will smell it on you. Im diggin this a lot.

Wow! Impressive composition! I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect patchouli scent since my fave Tom Ford’s Patchouli Absolu was discontinued. Villoresi’s Patchouli is earthy, woody and comforting. The lavender brings a little brightness to the overall woodiness. The oak moss provides more depth while the benzoin and musk give a little smoothness. This is likely on my top 3 patchouli centric scents now. So happy I found it!

This is quite a " dry " patchouli, with no sweetness and quite a peppery note at the beginning, and although the dry feeling stays with it throughout, especially when the vetiver kicks in, a musky, earthy, herby sweetness creeps in gently in the mid tones and allows the patchouli to shine, making this one of the most refined patch fragrances in existence.

Dopo una buona partenza in quinta marcia terrosa & cioccolatosa (le caratteristiche proprie del patchouli) rimane un non so che di resinoso, direi, molto simile al lucido da scarpe. Ma che nota è questa? Il benzoino? Mi aspettavo un patchouli più presente e persistente (il Sandalo di L. Villoresi è un altro pianeta, secondo me)

It is very similar to Psychedelique Jovoy but Psychedelique is happy and this cologne is mope. I prefer this cologne to Psychedelique. I love it's mope. A masterpiece absolutely. 8.5/10

As a patchouly lover I must say this is the best I've ever tried! wet and bitter, somehow mysterious, perfect for a warm interesting evening....

A beautiful Patch fragrance this is. IT has the same Patchouli aura as Santa Maria Novella Patchouli, another masterpiece.
