Matière Noire

I only have a sample of Matierie Noire, but I've used it at the store a few times too. I originally got the sample because I wanted to find a Louis Vuitton fragrance for my now ex fiance. I bought myself a bottle of Ombre Nomade, and asked the nice lady to give me some feminine samples. She gave me Attrape-Reves, Matiere Noire, and Rose des Vents. I ended up buying a full bottle of Attrape-Reves, but I ended up keeping it myself. I layer it with Ombre Nomade or Nuit de Feu. Matiere Noire is similar to when I layer Attrape-Reves and Ombre Nomade, but it's more subtle. The light, fresh top notes aren't as strong as the ones in Attrape-Reves, and the richer oud notes definitely aren't as strong as Ombre Nomade, but it's a really nice fragrance. One of the main reasons I chose Attrape-Reves was that it means dreamcatcher, and my ex has a tattoo of a dreamcatcher on her back. I miss her so bad. Matiere Noire probably would've been a better choice for her, but hindsight is 20/20. I've heard that Attrape-Reves is the scent for when you want to smell like a princess, and Matiere Noire is when you want to smell bewitching. I've seriously been considering buying that next. I really want Etoile Filante too, and L'immensite and Meteorè, and I really want to try the Extrait ones, like Symphony and Myriad. They don't have those at the store near me, unfortunately, and they're so expensive. I'm sure that I'll like them all, but I want to pick my favorite first.

As others have mentioned, this is the fruity and more airy take on LV’s Nouveau Monde. I find it more wearable day to day ie for office, family gatherings etc where I don’t want to smell offensive to anybody. Matiere Noire opens rather aquatic and upon first spray I was misled by this to feel disappointed...thankfully as it starts to dry down it morphs into a deeper blackcurrant-dark rose-smooth oud scent. The oud is very dialled down and not necessarily distinguishable as an oud but rather comes across as a general feeling of darkness that you could also achieve using leather, if that makes sense? The whole composition feels very tamed and no one note really stands out. I actually would have appreciated more oud and that’s probably why I prefer Nouveau Monde overall, but this one here is just so versatile and wearable that I’ll continue to use my bottle lovingly! I do feel it leans a little feminine because of the fruity floral airy touches but a man could still definitely pull it off. Signature scent worthy (it’s my signature scent 💗) Edit: got another bottle for a great deal. Just love this one for day to day wear!

The initial fruity scent doesn't last at all, it could be that blackcurrant is used here more for the color of the parfume than for its scent. That is, unless Jacques Cavalier has put his hand on a kind of special black currant ... a possibility underlined by the very name he gave to this frag ("black matter"). I'd even classify this frag as a false gourmand one, where the initial blackcurrant notes are immediately relayed by the combination of patchouli-rose-jasmin which are the ingredients used by top parfumers to get a glimpse of LOTV. This scent is modulated by cyclamen, and somewhat amplified by a soft oud and encens (maybe a touch of vanilla, too, not mentioned in the composition). Vanni is absolutely right, among the 7 EdP of Vuitton, this is the most mysterious & amazing one, and I don't understand all of it's aspects yet. The balance between the oud and the floral notes is fantastic and surprisingly stable over the time of the lasting effect of this parfume - at least on my skin.

A beautiful dark experience. Matière Noire feels like opening a dusty wooden chest in an attic. It's beautifully strange. It reminds me of the English countryside at dusk. The roses aren't polished or anything but it feels darker, like petals drying in an old farmhouse. The woods are smooth but also shadowy and creaking-floorboard-like. The blackcurrant note of this is definitely not juicy or candy-like in any way. It's pleasurably dusty. Slightly watery. Like crushed berries on soil. There's something rural about it but refined. Like wearing silk in a place you shouldn't be wearing silk. There's just this romantic isolation about this scent, it's elegant but hauntingly eerie. "You don't belong here, but you'll stay anyway." I have the small one from the LV discovery set and it's by far my favorite. Hoping to get my hands on a full size soon, though I do enjoy the sensation of dripping it on my wrists rather than spraying. Lovely scent overall. 9.5/10

I took delivery of my LV Matière Noire fragrance with a couple of samples of the new range thrown in. The packaging is utterly sublime if a little OTT. If you've seen love actually and the scene in the department store you'll know what I mean. But I do feel spoilt. Matière Noire opened with a rather generic and disappointing Aqua note (I detest Aqua frags - sorry) but (and thank God) settled within a few minutes to a floral, powdery yet spicy confection. I say confection because I feel like I've been dusted with icing sugar. This is really really REALLY good juice on my skin. It usually takes me several attempts to fall for a fragrance but right out if the blocks (plus the few minutes I mentioned) and I'm loving it. So the opening is something I dismissed. Followed by a sweet trance inducing aroma that is beautifully feminine. Really classy.

Beautiful combination of rose and oud, done the best out of any rose and oud combination I've ever smelled. The blackcurrant is less fruity and more sweet but ties together the harshness of the oud making it more sombre. I generally don't like oud fragrances but this is masterfully done. The patchouli is also a perfect touch and stands out for the first 2 hours for me, before the fragrances becomes deeper and darker. I would f**k this fragrance tbh. Anyway, the performance, honestly, for £200 is mediocre. I would say for 2.5 hours you get arms length projection, then until 5 hours you get elbows length, then it definitely becomes a skin scent. However, longevity is insane, I get 24 hours from it on clothes, and all day on skin, easily. Conclusion: this f**ks.

Easily one of the best from the house and totally slept on by all but a handful of those who know what’s what. Juicy blackcurrant opening that brings a subtle tartness that softens into a deliciously soft and watery rose. Not in any rush to share all its secrets, it gradually reveals itself as it takes you on a journey from ozonic, almost distant fruity sweetness through to a captivating and creamy base. Not skanky for a moment, but just a super sexy and approachable oud that will have total strangers snapping necks as you walk by. Yes, it’s floral, and yes it treads a line of femininity that some might not feel comfortable with, but its velvety sweetness feels unmistakably luxurious and perfectly unisex for those not afraid to show their softer side.

It’s shadowy, it’s gothic, it’s dry and leathery and funky in the best way possible. Dark matter, indeed. The rose is super present and super dark and woody, I would almost call it a black rose. This is like a cross between Rose 31 and Rose Tonnerre with some extra dark patchouli and Oud for good measure. I personally see very little in common with TF Noir de Noir, that one is jammy and delicious and draws you in. Matière Noire holds you at arms length; she’s that dominatrix in a leather pencil skirt, stilettos, an updo and cat eye glasses holding a ruler she might hit you with. And you might want her to. This is grown up and mature but not old fashioned in the least. Matière Noire is personality and confidence in a bottle.

I got this as a tester while buying some sunglasses from LV. I have ti admit this is the BEST rose fragrance I ever smelled 😍 I am not a fan of rose perfumes as they smell soapy and heavy, but this one is sweet and ambery at the same time. Very non-synthetic and very deep. When I smell it I get this beautiful image in my mind of a warm summer night, breezy, with dark blue sky and red and pink roses in full bloom. It is so sexy and feminine yet strong. It lasts for hours! I can’t wait to buy the full bottle 😍😍😍

this fragrance took me a few wear to love - the first time I sprayed it I was like "what the heck did my husband's money just buy?!?!?!" but I gave it like 2 more wears after that and I fell head over heels. It sweet but very mature. It's in a sexy, fun and mature way. the blend of Rose and Jasmine is so pretty - I also really love and appreciate and enjoy the way Jacques Cavallier does patchouli he does it in a way that it smells so lovely - it reminds me of Viktor&Rolf, the way that they do patchouli!

Just got this beautiful fragrance for my wife today at the Louis Vuitton store in San Jose CA. The staff who served me were amazing!! I tested all the feminine leaning fragrances in the store and this is the one that spoke to me the loudest .❤️❤️. Very sophisticated elegant scent and to my nose I find it unique and longevity and sillage are great 👍🏾. However this stuff is on the pricey side but I believe it's worth it and I don't want my wife to smell like most women.

I usually buy my perfumes blind which gives me such a rush of adrenaline. On a day when I wanted to pick up something completely different from what I already own, my eyes caught this one. I’ve always found agarwood (oud) to be charismatic, and here it’s beautifully crafted alongside watery, fruity notes. It honestly makes me feel as sensual as Léa Seydoux in the promo campaign. In fact, I'd say it has a sophisticated, sensual vibe. Definitely one of my top favorites!

Probably the most underrated LV? Dark and elegant blend of Oud and florals this is probably the most Oud dominant LV other than Myriad to me obviously there’s plenty of others that have it but the opening to this is raw and unadulterated but the drydown is rosy and elegant, the oud is always there but takes a backseat and lays in a bed of flowers I’ve heard maybe nobody ever talk about this but is seriously nice!

Very nice fragrance but I have so many in this vein. Similar to a few other LV frags, just reworked the rose and Oud levels and adding a tart blackcurrant note. Smells like so many other things but a little fresher and better done. Definitely similar to Noir de Noir but fresher from a more pinkish rose and strong blackcurrant note, could be a NdN fraiché spring/fall flanker. Performance is good.

top notes: powdery, strong, vanilla, white floral middle notes: vanilla, powdery, warm, woody, well blended rose base notes: same from middle notes This is very strong fragrance. Very nice fragrance overall and has great performance. Good for rose lovers though. I had it but didnt use it as much, overall 9/10.

Soft suede (wood/benzoin combo smells exactly like this for me) with a subtle sweetness from dried fruits and a bit of warm spices. It’s very well balanced and makes a beautiful cosy cocoon around. This scent kinda reminded of Narciso Rodriguez perfumes for her. If you hate the heavy patchouli in Narciso perfumes then you’ll be ok. It’s a fruity floral but the rose and the tame patchouli and spices stood out for me. Overall it’s nice perfume but I feel like I have smell this already.

I absolutely love this. It remains my favorite scent for years now. Such a warm, beautiful, deep scent. It's sugary while not being overpowering. The black currant and oud is stunning and complex. To me, there is nothing like this fragrance. It is stunning. Gourmand but not overpowering.

will it be discontinued next? I'd like to know that. I've heard that it'd be discontinued due to bad sales...well, LV literally has bias to advertise each fragrance...Spell on you is absolutely disaster compared to this, for instance.

I do love it! And I can not believe the comments below Like it's cheap scent bla bla. Do not hesitate if you like woody, fruity, rose scents. Longevity is really good and the sillage is moderate.

Starts like B.O., then it's a bouquet of sumptuous roses with a gaping anus in the middle. If you like that sort of thing, it's a good perfume. It's skankier than Ombre Nomade.

Beautiful rosy oud with a restrained sweetness. Tried side by side with Gucci Guilty Absolute pour femme and they are quite similar. Unisex, yes, but feminine leaning.

I like this one a lot! This is a more fruity and floral version of Nouveau Monde, it is like a feminine version of it and could be unisex.

it reminds me of expensive suede boots, I love it. It makes me feel mature, well dressed and intelligent with a dark side.

I do not like roses in a fragrance very much, but I love this one. It is a masterpiece. You have to have it.

To me it's more than just a rose scent. It smells elite and rich, and has good longevity.

In essence, the first hour of Matière Noire on my skin is a sugary, fruity red rose, but the interplay between secondary and tertiary notes makes an intriguing exercise: streaks of rubbery oud, a handful of green, earthy, dust-like patchouli and cassis, the later even provides a touch of warm animalicness and some jamminess of natural ripen fruits, even a fleck of fizzy incense woodsiness or ginger-like watery spiciness occasionally popping up, all handled with elegance and translucency, a recurring pattern of these new LV fragrances. Unfortunately, the dry down on my skin doesn't seem to inherit the dynamic of the opening. The peripheral notes soon die down, leaving only ripen yet sharp cassis and clean patchouli to assist the now dusty sugary rose, which then soon turns fruity jammy and swallows the patchouli and cassis whole. The overall effect is of the dry down of conventional, friendly, even limpid rose patchouli. The sillage is soft, and the longevity is around 9 hours. With the addition of oud and its manifesting in the opening, Matière Noire does seem a bit darker than the rest of the collection, but overall, it's still relatively bright and translucent. I thoroughly enjoyed the lively opening and would recommend it as an pleasant, modern fruity rose patchouli, but I can't help thinking that, there are also other fragrances with a less steep price, having more character or offer a similar understated elegance.

Somehow both light and dark, like a shadow on a sunny day. I'm not normally the biggest fan of the blackcurrant and rose combo, but this has a lovely depth that stops it feeling too sweet or young. There's an almost suede-like or soft leather note, perhaps from the very toned-down oud giving it a nice grounding feeling. Watery, crisp rose and lightly smoked woods, with a touch of tart blackcurrant. Would probably work best in transitional seasons, as it might be a little too aquatic to shine in very cold temps. It's elegant, but quite laid back such that you could easily wear it to the office or for day time events. Very classy but doesn't take itself too seriously, radiates quiet confidence. A real winner from LV. I have to admit it's not to my personal taste, so I won't be adding a bottle to my collection but I really appreciate what a lovely scent this is.

The opening of Matiere Noire is off-putting....like a blast of blackcurrant, rose, oud, and patchouli all at once. However, I find that the initial 15 minutes of a fragrance are misleading, and once the fragrance dries down, you're left with something that smells like a more mature version of Black Opium (mixed with all the aforementioned notes along with coffee) and also like a more feminine version Tom Ford Noir de Noir. I'm glad that this fragrance is distinctive, as you should get something unique for the price. I just don't like it enough to actually spend over $300 for it. If this were like an expensive Tom Ford fragrance where you can get a travel spray for $50-$70, then maybe it's worth having around for a cold night when you want something unusual. But you'll have to test it for yourself to see if you actually want to invest in a full bottle.

Straight up smells like a blackcurrent candy at first — sweet, fruity, but with something romantic and dark underneath. A little sexy, a little mysterious. With a hint of something slightly musty and off putting. Around the 20-minute mark, I caught a subtle smoky undertone that gave it a moody twist. Still very feminine but with an edge. You might get a whisper of rose, but it’s not too floral. After nearly an hour, any weird muskiness is gone. Now it’s just this elegant, dark berry-wood vibe, like blackcurrant meets candlelight. Has a sensual, gothic-feminine feel. It’s surprisingly smooth for something with oud — and I usually don’t do oud at all, but this works. Projection is decent. Rating: 7.5/10 – Very pretty and intriguing. Vibe : 🍇🕯️🌹🌌🖤🌙

It’s a surprisingly clean scent, almost a skin scent. I’d even have guessed it’s an EDT that soft. It’s very clean and light, I get the rose, cassis and patchouli. I don’t get the oud much but I guess it’s role here is to warm the base, which it does very well and gives a slight impression of amber. Does it smell like “black matter”? No, it’s not that otherworldly. Not to say that this closely resembles anything, but it reminds me of Gucci Guilty Absolute For Women, without the sweetness, of course. If you’re curious of this one but it isn’t available in your area, go smell the Gucci, this is a tamer, more natural and elegant version of that.

Off the bat you get watery rose; light, airy oud; and, an inoffensive incense note. Leans feminine, if that matters to you. But overall it's a beautiful scent, regardless of gender. Would I wear it? No. I don't think it fits my style. It's quite an elegant scent. My mother wears it really well, though. Think: strong, independent, semi-conservative woman in her 60's, works in politics. I do think it's worth getting a sample of if you're new to exploring oud scents.

Jammy black currant, rose opening. I get rose, heady narcissus, and minty, watery, aqueous woods. Dry down is sensual and cool; effervescent is the word I'm looking for. Watery and fruity oud, without the heaviness of oud. I imagine this on a contemporary woman who is charismatic and magnetic, and is also very comfortable with her femininity. Distant, yet at the same time, familiar.

I like this, I don't love it. I layer it with other fragrances a lot, so it's a great mixer for me. I am wearing it mixed with Amouage Reflection and it makes for a clean warm weather day time fragrance. I don't think I will repurchase it but enjoy it for now.

Unisex/leaning feminin, but to me it is Unisex! Got a bottle for cheap. Its like a fresh sweeter tom ford noir de noir. Dont know about longevity yet. But its pumping of my arm here.

One would think this is another rose & oud fragrance, but don't be alarmed.. This is not even as good as that lol

For a moment this was a nice & cozy Oriental rose scent, but quickly ruined by the smoke & rubbery "oud."

I’m still trying to figure this fragrance out. I think, because it’s summer, I may not be enjoying this as much as I would if I were testing it in autumn. To me, it reminds me a bit of Jo Malone Velvet rose and oud with a touch of sweetness. However, the oud definitely takes on a suede or leather type of feel. The rose is also more delicate. In fact, the entire fragrance is subtle. Not that it doesn’t project, it definitely does. However, no note is loud or overpowering. It definitely smells high end, but if I’m being honest, it reminds me more of a room spray or candle. To me, it smells like a high end furniture store or hotel. It’s a beautiful fragrance, just more of one that adds ambience to a space. I am not sure I would like it on my body. I’m conflicted, I think it smells really good, but I don’t necessarily think it smells like a fragrance to wear. I will have to revisit it in the fall and see if I’d be more comfortable with wearing it. It’s perfectly unisex. I think a man can get away with this in any season. The oud is not overpowering in this, but still woody enough that I personally would only wear it in cooler weather.

I feel conflicted about this one. It's a sophisticated woody rose, and the performance is excellent. The rose is the central note, but even though this is a deep and woody scent, there's a freshness to the rose which prevents it from seeming old fashioned. Then in the drydown the amber comes through and it's actually really pleasant. (I don't usually like strong amber). After writing the above, I'm wondering why I've marked this "okay." I think it's because the scent to me was overwhelming to the point of being oppressive, even with only a tiny bit sprayed on. I was going to keep it initially, but then I realized I would actually *never* reach for this scent over the others I have... So, a really accomplished scent for someone else. But you might just want to apply lightly!

Ok, so I blind-bought it after hearing and reading some great reviews. I won't be lying that when I smelled it, I smelled money. But it's old money of a well-dressed elderly lady, who is perhaps a bit reserved, and adores classical music. Blackcurrant and petrol-like smell in the opening, then it becomes more oud-y and musty when settled on my skin. To compare it to some other fragrance, I would definitely say: Jo Malone's Blackcurrant Bay mixed with Pomegranate Noir vibe. It's not pretty-pretty, it's not sexy, it's not even meh. But it is definitely intriguing (I do keep sniffing my forearm). I don't think I will be wearing it, but I do understand that some people may like it, a lot actually.

Intriguing, skanky patchouli oud. Strange, mature, a bit dark, gothic even. Not sure I’m getting the blackcurrant, but definitely getting the oud (the Western version). And some wood...a dead tree w/ urine-saturated trunk. Dry down brings the watery notes, quickly becoming wholly aquatic. If there is a rose, it’s a ghost. Yeah, no. This would have to macerate for a least a century before I’d reach for it.

To me this leans a bit more on the masculine side because of the oud, I don’t really like it on myself. The most prominent notes are oud, blackberry syrup, and rose. For some reason the combination of the notes created sort of a playdough-like smell which I dislike.

Initial spray was skanky, barnyard oud. A scrubber. But after five minutes it was fine. Still very mature with the patchouli and rose, but it got much softer and more pleasant. But wow that opening was tough

Oud, gasoline, and more oud. One of the worst fragrances I've ever worn.
