Furze

Furze is an Old English word for gorse (derived from another OE word from an Indo-European root, meaning "rough or prickly" which refers to its sharp thorns). Furze is commonly found on uncultivated land in Britain and is similar in appearance to broom, which often grows nearby and also bears bright yellow, sweet-smelling flowers, but has no spines or thorns (and which I can testify hurts a lot less when you fall into it. And no, I wasn't drunk). I wish I had £100 for every comment/review I have read on Fragrantica regarding the names of perfumes and their unfortunate meanings or connotations in different languages. Seriously, I would have a lot of money in my bank by now. It really is something we should all get over - come on Fragranticans - we are all adults and we should be better than this! That aside, I bought a small bottle of the EDP today and am wearing it now. I dabbed it on initially, but just decanted some into an atomiser and sprayed it, which causes the sillage to increase exponentially. This is lemony-coconutty heaven, but somehow stays out of gourmand territory. I completely understand the description (above) of "narcotic" (although I'd be hard-pressed to explain exactly WHY?). I love it.

Perfect summer perfume DOES exist. I saw Furze on the shelf in my local Lush store for years and stupidly didn't even bother to test it until I spoke about coconut scents with one of their customer assistants. Can't believe I was SO ignorant for years, this is a holy grail. First of all, these fragrance notes here are completely wrong. There's a lot of gorse flowers and coconut in these. There's some green sharpness here as well making it smell so unique. It's summery, sunny, coconuty and comforting without being too sweet and cloying. There's no sunscreen-like smell here, this fragrance is so unique. I want to drench myself in these and lay on the Aruba beach for days watching crystal clear water and enjoying the sun.

I don’t know why Fragrantica has the only notes listed as Mimosa and Neroli because those notes are almost non-existent in Furze. Furze is a coconut scent. I don’t know what Gorse smelled like. But Lush Furze is a nice coconut fragrance. It is creamy coconut milk and vanilla. I don’t get any other notes - no floral, no powder etc. It is a very nice coconut scent. It is not synthetic at all. It is lightly sweet but not super sweet and artificial. It is just a really nice, creamy coconut-vanilla scent. Perfect for summer. Lushies who are fans of the scent of Sympathy for Skin lotion would definitely enjoy Furze as it is a similar soft, creamy, vanillic scent.

One of the best scents from Lush's Volume 2 collection! Reminds me of the long 90's summers, when i was a kid and my dad would smother himself in Hawiian Tropic bronzing oil - makes me smile every time i smell it :) Furze is a legitimate name for Gorse, It shouldve been named 'Gorse' in Germany. Buy this if you love coconut scents! Great in summer but also in the depth of winter, when the warmth of the sun is a distant memory... Wear this and smell of sunshine!

Straight up playdough scent, but in a good way. It's so unusual, but I can't stop smelling it. Tried it on my skin at the store and it smelled even better. I would consider it a lactonic fragrance. Doesn't smell exactly like coconut, but has the same vibe to it. Very long lasting as well, which is nice. Never expected I would want to smell like playdough, but here I am. Might not be a safe blind buy because it's such an unusual fragrance.

Gorgeous creamy milky vanilla-coconut. Very Christmas-y, reminds me of their snowcake soap. Probably one of the more simple Lush perfumes, the others are really brilliant conceptual pieces which conjure up places, memories and art pieces, but this one is just simply sweet and delicious.

This is a very unique perfume in my opinion. I really like it, but I can see why some don’t. It’s creamy in a weird way. Sweet, but not sugary. I didn’t think of it as a coconut scent until I read the comments on here. I do get vanilla and yellow flowers though!

I liked this way more than I expected as I'm not necessarily into coconut/vanilla scents! But this smells like spring in Scotland and the overwhelming scent of blooming gorse when you make your way to the beach. Didn't get Play-Doh on my skin.

Why is not the coconut note listed? Furze is lovely. I wear it in winter and in summer as well. It smells like Curly Wurly by Lush. Very coconuty. But I don't smell any floral notes in it. Just fresh coconut.

No idea what gorse/furze actually smells like (as in the actual plant), but this is a very powdery coconut/vanilla. Smells kind of like a sweeter version of play doh

Kinda reminds me of the same line as banana co-wash, yog nog, coconut drench, etc. I love it sm, I wish I had the money to buy it though :(

I adore this. Creamy, coconutty, but there's something else there. Like a mix of sun cream and play-doh, but it works.

Smells like coconut oil sunscreen and surfboard wax to me. Very nostalgic beachy smell. I'd buy a whole bottle.

The name means Gorse (Tojo), which is a natural plant of Europe (ulex europaeus). Furze hit the market in 2013, as part of the line of fragrances called "Volume 2" (released in 2012) and was inspired by the shrub that grows in the gardens of Simon Constantine’s house, who is the perfumer of the brand. It is a sweet perfume of optimistic concept since it aims to lift the spirits during the harsh winter in Europe, by which time the plant blooms. In its composition, we can find notes of neroli, mimosa absolute, vanilla, and coconut, as well as chemical compounds like Geraniol and Farnesol, which enhance the floral aspect, Linalool, which gives sweet-floral aspect and Amyl Cinnamal, with its nuances of jasmine. As a result, Furze is a true floral-vanilla, which does not have many facets, remaining fairly linear from start to finish. When touches the skin, the mix of flowers + vanilla + coconut predominates, with an aroma that, often, remember the smell of caramel. Only after about an hour, jasmine nuances begin to appear with more power and continue until the fragrance disappears completely. Oddly enough, it's possible to imagine the yellow flowers and its scent, as if you were in a big field of Tojos. According to the company, Furze is slightly sweet but never cloying. And I agree! However, cannot be applied in excess, because the spell can turn against the wizard. During the testing period for this review, my sprays were contained and lasted long enough to show the power of this perfume, in EDP concentration, which exudes and lasts in a sensational manner. About the target audience: within the concept of High Perfumery, the Gorilla Perfume brand fits well into the category of Natural Perfumery. And as usual, this type of product is made for use by both genders. However, it is worth saying that, in my opinion, Furze is the kind of perfume with more feminine appeal.

@bearbearina, Liked your review especially liked the playdoh top note comment :D, I'm happy to say that I haven't had that tho, and at one point you could actually buy playdoh scent which is no more crazy than some of Lush's scents I reckon. This is my second foray into Lush scents I like that they steer away from traditional perfumes and go crazy. I bought Furze in the small bottle, and like my initial smell of 'breath of god' I get the single notes of Neroli and Coconut which isn't two notes I'd mesh together but what do I know, unlike B of God, it didn't end with the warm floral notes just stayed around for a good length of time. I didn't get any other note. However I feel it's a good coconut smell. It smelled lovely on me according to my step daughter and she hates going in fragrance stores and holds her nose but perversely adores Lush shops! I'll be keeping it for spring/summer or a cold sunny day, I like it but need to wear it more to be friends with this perfume, if you blind buy, well it is Lush after all and it hasn't the shock top notes of Breath of God (luckily).

When you open the bottle, the first whiff you get is just darling. I found it hard to pin-point the notes but it just smelled so fresh and clean, light and airy - like freshly laundered sheets blowing on a clothesline in a garden in springtime with the sun shining down on it. The shop I was in did not have a tester but I was so smitten that I purchased it anyway. When I actually applied it onto my skin, I got a completely different scent; gone was the fresh, springtime laundry and instead I got a whiff of a freshly opened tub of PlayDoh. It was such a peculiar scent that I had decided to return it to the store. Who wants to walk around smelling like PlayDoh? But then I decided to layer it with Lush Sun and that is a winning combination right there. I still get a whiff of PlayDoh as the top-note but after about 15 minutes, the orangey scent of Sun grabs Furze by the hand and they run off to the playground giggling together. In short: Furze is not my cup of tea on its own but is lovely when layered with Sun.

My first impressions of Furze is a slightly sophisticated, coconut-like lotion, powdery yet creamy in ways that feels similar to playdoh. It's staying power has lasted multiple hours & a couple attempts trying to wash it out of my skin... Reminds me of what I would think what a kitten would smell like if you turned up it's kitten fur smell up x2 and sweetened it with warm milk; it's a very alluring scent overall that I (personally) feel like would be best used within a public space (as it shines better around other scents, compared to when alone or in 1-on-1 situations it may come off too sickeningly sweet IMO) in situations where you want to be formal but not *too* formal to a point of regal aura. While personally not my flavor & wont be joining my shelf anytime soon I definitely think it's a smell that's intoxicatingly reminiscent of some sort of coconut gourmand without straying too far into a childish-sweet or too-casual fragrance.

Playdoh opening...but then, it gets better. Not coconut, but creamy...something floral peaking out, not sure what, the longer it dries down. Powdery, creamy, muted florals... I smell chocolate in this. Not cocoNUT, I smell COCOA. That smooth chocolate, not the bitter dark chocolate. A strange mix, but for me, it works. A gourmand perfume, even though it isn't described as such. I wouldn't say that this is a safe blind buy, (although I did that), simply because this perfume ISN'T typical...but I would try it if you appreciate the unusual. It carries that unmistakable Lush DNA..if Lush isn't your thing, you won't like this. I'm a HUGE fan, but it's not for everyone. I would say that it reminds me of warm skin, inside a cashmere sweater...soft, barely sweet, creamy, muted floral...really nice. It grows on you.. The longer it's on, it just...melts into you. Deffo unisex. A man would smell delightful in this.

Adore this perfume! Originally purchased in Scotland on a study abroad in college and wore it all summer, so it's associated with beachy, carefree memories to me then and now. I purchased another big bottle, the largest kind, for about $150 USD about two years ago in Prague and didn't really use it too much for a long time. The truth is that while this is a light coconut/vanilla/neroli type of scent, it does smell more biting to me in dry climates and is softer and gentler in humid climates. For example, I wore this in Cancun a ton and it was a great scent for summer, warm, beachy energy, but didn't like wearing it in the winter in the New Mexico desert at all. Definitely not a winter or a night time scent. However, it is strong, lasts all day, and just may make you a little bit happier.

I think this perfume is quite fun but a bit difficult to wear. I first get a blast of coconut with a green note, then comes a little mimosa and something reminicent of marzipan in the dry down. I get the play-doh vibe others are mentioning (which I love!). I honestly think it smells yellow and I love that. Natural and yellow. I have a conditioner that smells almost identical which I love, but I still never find an occasion to wear this perfume. Too weird for work. Too daytime for parties. Weird in the winter. Weird indoors. Generally weird. I imagine wearing this in the summer, outside, somewhere in the nature during the day. Maybe good on picnics or campings/hikes? Eh. Still love it though :)

This is a gorgeous mimosa scent. Furze is a very creamy and faintly powdery mimosa sprinkled with sweet coconut. Yes I know mimosa is not listed here nor is it the highlighted note on Lush's website (I'm sure that will be corrected soon enough) but mimosa absolute is among the top ingredients of this gorgeous perfume! Furze is my new mimosa love outside of L'Occitane's. I am so happy! This is MUCH better than Caron's Farnesiana! Yes, I said it. And it has great longevity too. It is only available in 15 Lush stores in North America and I believe also on their website. If you love mimosa like I do, you owe it to yourself to try this beauty!

I was torn between 2 lush perfumes and bought this based on the following vibe... you're walking along a beach on the Mediterranean coast with a slight salty breeze in your hair, wrapped in a towel eating coconut ice cream as it melts in the blazing sun. It has a slight marzipan/coconut smell to it. It can be a little nauseating depending on the weather. It's best to wear in summer when your skin is warm, as this makes it sweeter for me. Otherwise if it's cold, it can come off synthetic. Not a perfume I wear all the time, but definitely in summer. Perfect for anyone who loves the combination of coconut & salt...

After dabbing one drop on my wrist and rubbing it together Furze unravels itself like a warm coconut rice cake from its banana leaf. Soft, creamy, and decadently edible. I smell a dominant coconut rounded out with vanilla, in a gourmand genre which I find inspired by Lush Vanillary. As I already own and love the latter, I might not jump ahead with this offering, being in oil form and softer in sillage. I would recommend trying this, it has already inspired a craving for ethnic desserts for me, and I sure want to nibble on my wrist! :)

Haha wow, I hope they aren't marketing this in Germany!! LOL. I like this scent because it's got a nice sweetness, but hardly gourmand. It reminds me a little of almond. I see what you mean by popcorn butter note. This perfume is quite strange, but not in a bad way at all. I bought the small size because I found it so unusual and I don't really have anything like it (although I do own a million vanilla perfumes, I find this to be completely in a different category). It's at least worth checking out!

I had this one for a while and I never reviewed it.. maybe because it is really weird. First, I cannot believe there's only 2 notes in this one. It's quite complex. It's like an intense white floral mixed with bitter coconut and something like plastic ? but green plastic. It's bizarre and last forever. I like it but it's definitely not for everyone. It's still relatively easy to wear in small amount though. Blooms in hot temperature.

With Furze, I get an initial and very brief neroli blast, then it's straight up vanilla play-doh... But only for a while, because when it settles and warms up on my skin, it turns into a buttery vanilla sugar cookie scent. Delicious! I've discovered it's a warm weather scent - the warmth brings the gourmand notes out beautifully. In winter, it reminds me of coconut scented sun lotion and I find it a bit cloying.

I blind bought this on ebay to try as I love all things Lush. It reminds me a bit of play doh but in a good way, or maybe a bit like the smell you get in your kitchen when you're baking. Sweet, almondy, marzipanny, coconutty (are those even words?) but I don't find it too sickly. I really like it though. It's very unique and I can still smell it on my skin a good few hours later which is nice!

I hate mimosa, but it's just baaaaarely detectable here. It really does smell a bit like Snowcake with coconut added. Kind of a shampoo-y smell in a way. Sorta pleasant, but coconut isn't really my thing. I'm not a sunbather. EDIT: Ah man, if this had smelled like the "Big Calm" shower jelly I'd be all over it. Now THAT is how coconut should be handled.

Such an interesting and unique scent. The coconut mixed with the floral notes (which remind me of the stereotypical Lush bath bomb scent) combine to create a playdough fragrance. You may enjoy this for the nostalgia factor or if you work as a preschool teacher, but personally I don't think this would find a place in my collection.

This is quite a unique scent that works well in both summer and winter. In warmer weather, it brings to mind a creamy coconut with touches of green leaves. In cooler weather, it feels more like a soft, cosy cotttony perfume. The best/worst part is that Furze means "farts" in German (I live in Germany)!

Smells of the English spring. That is if you're someone who likes to walk through fields of oilseed rape (canola) wearing a mild amount of coconut suncream and chewing a little bubblegum. Strong, unusual and challenging yet wonderfully different!

After a few minutes smells like realistic coconut+vanilla, great beach scent, as it kind of resembles a good smelling sun lotion.

I'm not sure what this is (where are people getting coconut?), but I like it, it's great for summer.

On me, this is almost entirely heliotrope (think this is the gorse but smells like heliotrope) on the Lush salty vanilla. Was hoping for more mimosa, which is one of my favourite notes. Beginning of the scent is better, fresher, almost magical, fairy kingdom when it first comes out; sadly that goes away within minutes and very soon it settles down to the powdery heliotrope/gorse. Not getting any coconut or neroli. Still, an interesting scent that I like to wear from time to time. Will figure out something to layer with this.

Warm Play-doh. It’s not bad, but I don’t want to smell like play-doh.

This has to be one of my most disappointing fragrance experiences ever. I love the smell of gorse (which is called furze in southern England where Lush is based) and I was so excited when I found out that Lush were releasing a gorse perfume. Honestly, who could say no to smelling like warm coconut vanilla custard? But unfortunately Furze smells absolutely nothing like the real smell of sun-warmed gorse flowers which is one of the best smelling natural experiences you can get living in the UK. I cannot see how Furze is supposed to smell of gorse, it just doesn't, it's bitter and screechy and I really don't like it.

Out of all the ones I tried in my local Lush store, this stood out as resembling a decent attempt at making a perfume. So I tried it on skin. I really appreciate fragrances that have a contrasting welcoming warmth and cool freshness about them, and the opening of this fragrance has that. Unfortunately, an hour later the whole thing just collapses and it smells like plasticine with a sprinkling of sugar, which is kind of Lush’s signature scent with a lot of their products, not just the perfumes. I think my short venture into exploring Lush fragrances has come to an end. 1/10

on me this came out as straight up Play-Doh, plain and simple. most others rave about how coconutty and tropical/vanilla it is but i unforuntately get nothing but that nostalgic salty powdery clay. not a bad smell, i just don't want to pay money to smell like it. based on description alone, i was in for a shock at our initial perfume training session. it does smell a little better on others (used to work at Lush, so had the opportunity to experience it on many different bodies). might just be my nose. though not an offensive smell by any means, Furze is a sad miss for me.

I have this in a body spray format and it just smells like coconuts to me. I'm surprised it's not listed in the notes. It's overepoweringly coconuty and almost greasy for my taste. There is also something in this that doesn't quite sit well with me - something that stings my nose.. maybe its the neroli? I don't know if the perfume smells the same way but I'm sorry I bought this on a blind buy. 2/10

Ignore the listed notes. It starts with an utterly overwhelming burst of marzipan, and what is best described as a sour and sweet apple candy. Almost like cypress, that penetrating, very sweet and citrusy note, hurts your teeth just smelling it. Quite linear but becomes more powdery and more Play Doh-y and plasticy as it dries down. Also, furze means fart in German. I have no words.

This is a powdery, marshamallow-y, coconut/vanilla scent with an undertone of what smells like the juice that comes out of weeds pulled from a garden. On my skin it quickly turns to a fuzzy, mega-powder scent with hints of vanilla, coconut and sunscreen. Fragrances go powdery on me anyway and this eventually fades to a dusty, vaguely sweet powder. It's a bit too old lady on me.

I really disliked this and so did all the people I tried unsuccessfully to give it away to. It's the only perfume that I ever threw in the bin before it was fully used up. I adore coconut and vanilla scents but you should NOT necessarily believe the notes claimed above. This smells of chemicals and rotting wet vegetation on my skin. Definitely try it before you buy it.

On my skin I get thick plastic note?? Weird. Maybe the coconut that makes that? very strong, thick and overwhelming. Not for me. På min hud får jag en tjock plastig doftnot?? Kanske kokosnöten, tjock och lite obehaglig...Väldigt stark, tjock och överväldigande. Inte för mig.

This is horrible. I don't know what Lush is thinking, I haven't liked any of the 2013 scents and this is terrible. It smells like vinyl and sickly coconut, with a kind of bitterness like cleaning fluid. Very bad indeed.

This would be pretty if it were not for the popcorn-butter note I smell the whole way through. Bonus points for tenacity and longevity: when I wanted to get this off my arm, nothing I did worked!
