Maderas de Oriente Cologne Extract

Maderas de Oriente reminds me of the captivating synergy that comes from neroli as it converges with sandalwood. The chiaroscuro that shapes it, especially when enfolded with iris and carnation, reminds me of the texture found in L'Heure Bleue. Yet, while that is the bluest hour with pastel violet clouds over the silhouette of a Gothic church, this is the sun's rays hitting Mudéjar architecture and bringing into relief all of its ornate detail. It feels simple and forward as the light, but is deceptively complex once I stop myself from any distraction and push my nose forward. My bottle was filled at a time when Mysore Sandalwood was not yet over-harvested to near oblivion, displaying its dried orange-peel allure, its buttermilk skin sensuality, black tea and wood shavings undertones. It progresses with accretions, the neroli at first giving the impression that this could be a light and bright cologne, but no sooner than it appears do I realize that the spiced, powdery layer announces its depth. Another layer, and the volume of sacred wood used here is evident, and I begin to ponder just how much this early 20th century ode attests to how colorful and profound the mythology of our past really had been.

This is an old love. Maderas de Oriente was sold here in Brazil, along with other Myrurgia fragrances, such as Maja and Promesa, in almost all drugstores. Unfortunately, for several years now, it isn’t possible to find these fragrances anymore. A real pity! Maderas de Oriente reminds me my grandmothers house, in the countryside. What a beautiful time! Last year, in a Barcelona visit, I had the joy to find in El Corte Ingles a “Colonia Extracto” and bought it. But as soon as I arrived back in Brazil, I thought that I should have bought more bottles (that’s why I traveled back to Barcelona this year and bought more of it). I also have some bottles with the vintage juice. Wow, it’s just wonderful. I just don’t agree with Fragrantica’s perfume category. For me, Maderas de Oriente is an Oriental Spicy, with carnation all way long. A real Spanish masterpiece!! If you have the opportunity to buy it, please do!!

I finally had the chance to try it in El Corte Inglés in Mallorca. It's the reformulated version but it's still an ode to boudoir. First, you get wrapped in the vintage Maderas de Oriente compact powders fragrance (Magnificent iris-amber-woods combo). Next, comes the lipstick (iris-carnation-Lys), and finally the oriental perfume itself adding the neroli, spices and vanilla. To those who haven't tried it, it's Infusion d'Iris Absolue but a bit spicier, which is really, really nice. I join to Henriette's prayer: Please, make it last longer.

Again another one which I have never tried before being reformulated, so no comparison is possible (I'm glad of that). You must love woods and spices to appreciate this scent: Maderas de Oriente is mainly on woods and spices, cloves most of all. Vanilla is very very distant, just a passing shadow in a fleeting moment, the time Maderas de Oriente lasts on your skin. I detect no citrus even though listed in the notes (are you sure???). I like using it in summer, as it's light but different from the citrus scents one would normally expect. You may feel it's a scent from very long ago: I can well imagine a woman from the early XXth c. all wrapped in a cloud of Maderas de Oriente, perhaps a precursor in a spicy trend that will become so popular in the decades to come. I like thinking of Maderas de Oriente as the mother of Cinnabar, Yoth Dew and Opium. A prayer: please improve the lasting power, the scent is nice, too bad it flies away so soon.

My mother loved this perfume as it was one of my grandmother's favourites. Recently, I've been wearing Kenzo Amour Florale and my mother says it reminds her a lot of Maderas de Oriente. If you loved Maderas de Oriente, but cannot find it anymore, maybe you'll enjoy Kenzo Amour Florale. I've never tried Maderas de Oriente myself, I'm basing this review on my mother's opinion. A mi mamá le encantaba este perfume porque mi abuela lo usaba. En América Latina ya no se consigue. Recientemente he estado poniéndome Kenzo Amour Florale y mi mamá dice que le recuerda mucho a Maderas de Oriente, tanto que le regalé una botella de aquel. No es un substituto exacto, pero quienes aman Maderas de Oriente y ya no lo encuentran quizás disfruten de Kenzo Amour Florale. Yo nunca he olido Maderas de Oriente, estoy basándome en la opinión de mi madre.

Hasta donde yo se, este perfume era comercializado por Mirurguia, que despues compro Antonio Puig. En México no lo comercializan, pero se que en Argentina si, lo mismo que España. alguien sabe algo. As far as I know, this perfume was marketed by Mirurguia, that after Antonio Puig buy. Not marketed in Mexico, but Argentina is that if, like Spain. someone knows something.

It has been discontinued (perfume) for decades in Spain, till two or three years ago, since the Myrurgia división 'Maderas de Oriente' (including Perfume & Make up)owned by Puig Group has been sold to Nelia (a 'Gal' firm división). These new versions have nothing to do with original perfume quality.
