Dancing On The Moon

This is my absolute favourite scent in the world, so of course it was discontinued. From the reviews you can see it is NOT blind buy safe, but if you love it you LOVE it. The aldehydes are smooth, if that makes sense? And then it's very creamy and solar/tropical from the frangipani but also powdery from iris, and I detect an anise note, which adds edginess to any fragrance. It's sweet, and both ethereal as well as dense. I can't describe it, but don't let the note structure scare you. It's an extremely delicious and creamy scent. The metallic note is there in the beginning giving it some lunar energy and galactic sparkle, but is gone by the dry down and you're just left with the most delightful creamy, solar, powdery frangipane and iris scent. I wear this all-year round and at any time of day. This is also beast mode. You become anosmic to it, but I remember the first time I wore it, I got into an Uber and the driver said "oh my GOD, you smell incredible". And the compliments have never stopped - I even got them at quite serious meetings at work. I sometimes layer it with Escentric Molecule 1+Iris to amp up that buttery Iris element, and make it a touch more grown-up for work. The only time I wouldn't wear this is during the day in Summer. But Summer nights - solar and tropical perfection. Wintery days at work - creamy & interesting, and Winter nights - sexy, mysterious, creamy! Ps: I don't get the comparisons to Alien, other than the fact that it is exceptionally polarising because of how bold and different they are. This is unlike anything else I've ever smelled. THE most underrated masterpiece. Ps: I think if you love Lolita Lempicka OG or Premier, this is in the same whimsigoth space.

If you want to know what this is or missed out due to its being discontinued, it is Chanel No 5 Eau Première (2015) + Replica Beach Walk. Or if you want to be very precise, Chanel Eau Première (2015) + Armani Sun Di Gioia. That's exactly what Dancing on the Moon is. I bought myself a bottle of the newer Eau Première when it was first released, I was around 18 or 19 at the time. I found it to be so sophisticated, so much more wearable for younger people than the original No 5, but because I was a little too much of a disheveled punk to be the kind of person to wear it often, I ended up selling my bottle to make room for scents that were either more raunchy or more approachable. I wish I knew about this at the time, because it would've been exactly what I was looking for -- the sparkling, lemony aldehydes and creamy ylang-ylang of Eau Première, with the creamy, benzoin-heavy and almost suntan lotion feel of Beach Walk/Sun Di Gioia. The only thing Dancing of the Moon doesn't have is the rose of Eau Première, and that's a welcome exclusion because I don't really like the smell of roses anyway. I don't get any higher longevity than the clear-bottled eau de toilettes, so I don't get what's the deal with the $180 price tag on release. You aren't getting more sillage or longevity for your money with this line. Beautiful, definitely smells expensive despite the disappointing longevity for an eau de parfum. My favorite of the five Replica eau de parfums. But you're not missing out on much for being so hard to find at a fair price, it's just a nice mix of two very well-loved fragrances still widely available at any department store and you can get largely the same effect by layering the two.

UPDATE 2021 : For the superior, ultimate version of the concept of this Margiela please try Marc-Antoine Barrois' GANYMEDE-- now my favourite industrial / metallic / avant garde perfume of all time! For a more floral version of this, try Juliette Has A Gun's Metal Chypre. For a less metallic, more stone-y version of this try Oud Minérale by Tom Ford. 2020 REVIEW (below) : It's interesting. ...Others say its a huggable, vanillic scent but despite having, myself, tried "weird" avant-garde perfumes from CdG, comparing this to the 2011 CdG EdP I own (notes of scotch-tape, industrial glue) it does not smell the same, because the metallic vibe of this Margiela perfume is (especially) weird. This makes my 2011 CdG EdP, while conceptually stronger, smell tame. It smells just like metal, the metal of a handrail, the metal smell of a multivitamin pill bottle. Hints of floral, but I'll definitely buy this for the scent which caught me off-guard: dare I say it's kinda... futuristic. (I give it bonus points for smelling just like its fashion.)

SO smart of them to bring this back. This perfume is one of the classiest and most wearable perfume I own. classy because it smells high quality, both modern but reminiscent of old school perfumes with florals and aldehydes, but it's super wearable and modern. When I fist got it, I was not impressed and let it sit for a while. After a few months in my collection, I've found myself grabbing it in last min decisions where I'm not sure what to wear, but I know I need something classy/sophisticated. I wear it to creative events, intellectual events, regular hangs. Its nearly as wearable as Matcha Meditation, which is also great for all occasions. Women everywhere stop me to ask what it is. I wouldn't say this is one of the most amazing smells ever, it's innovative and distinctive, but ultimately too safe for me to be one of my faves. I will say I wear this far more than most of my "faves." Just got my back up bottle after they brought it back and the formula is slightly different but pretty much the same.

this fragrance was like a fever dream to me, first scent ive ever smelt that left me fascinated in a different way. i felt like an alien putting this on my skin. extremely unique fragrance thats sosososososo addictive, i couldnt stop bringing my hand to my nose constantly at the mall i tried this at. i was left star struck and loved this chemical creamy porridge, white floral story on my hand. the name seriously lives up to the scent. the white florals are beautifully executed in the scent and the aldehydes made it so delicious, most perfectly unisex scent ive smelt. smells like something a really dirty and bad billionaire would wear in their in new all white interior complex bought by blood money and evil pennies. 10/10 i love this i cannot get enough i always look for this in sephora and pick it up standing in the margiela section for minutes. has crazy performance too.

I can see the comparison to Ghost in the Shell, but Dancing on the Moon is sweeter, less synthetic, and more floral. Both have an inorganic quality to them that I find compelling, but the vinyl aspect (my favorite part) of GitS is what sets it apart. I have to say, I get a lot of frangipani and a pleasantly metallic background, but not much in the way of aldehydes. "Floral minerality" is accurate. Sambac jasmine is prominent, which gives it sweetness and effervescence. It smells "fizzy". Lasting power is great, easily through a workday. Though this one is probably a bit much for the office. I have an old bottle that I got in maybe 2017, and it's held up well. Be careful spraying on light clothes, as it may stain. This one tends to get forgotten too long at the back of the cabinet, but I never regret wearing it.

I agree with @Deutsch100 its hard to distinguish from Alien on clothes. Alien is a bit more in your face sharp than this one. I smell sweet frangipani, mineral notes from ambergris, lovely jasmine and soft cashmeran notes. If you like Alien you will love this one...if you dont you ́ll love this one also... On skin this is creamy, soft and addictive. I think the distinct frangipani notes gives that impression. I can smell some resemblance of beach walk from same MM. Delicious, clean, surprisingly creamy scent. Total and utterlly love. All occasions all seasons all genders. Longevity is great on me, silage is above average

There's this frangipani facet that gives the fragrance its own identity, a floral, sunlit quality unlike anything else in my collection. It's the kind of scent that just takes hold without you knowing exactly why, and eventually ties itself to a specific outfit, to the point where you don't want to wear that outfit without it. The sillage is generous, very projected, and the longevity keeps pace with the same intensity, a scent that marks its passage and lingers well after. A scent that works in every season, and one you love instinctively, without ever quite managing to explain what draws you to it so much.

This is one of those that smells exactly as the label indicates. “Floral minerality” is precisely how I would describe this were I left to my own devices. I definitely get jasmine and subtle violet, and I get a lot of that dusty, soft cashmeran in the drydown. I’d say it leans slightly feminine, but not too much. I’m glad I picked this up, it’s really nice. Dancing on the Moon is one of the few of its type (light florals) that I’ve found that is this versatile. I can see this working well on men and women, day and night, and in hot or cold weather.

Utterly narcotic. This is a clean, silky, opulent scent. Looking at the list of notes you'll notice a few animalic ingredients (namely ambergris and musk.) It's not that these notes are hidden behind the obvious florals and aldehydes so much as they are expertly interwoven into the total composition in such a way that their quality gives off warmth rather than heat, sensuality rather than libido. Stereotypically it comes off as feminine, but a particularly confident or idiosyncratic man could certainly pull this off.

Interspersed narcotic florals, fizzy minerals hinging on the metallic. Aldehydes. Hidden-away animalistic musks and ambergris. The extraterrestrial, avant-garde predecessor to Ganymede. Deeply sensual and "gender anonymous" as they like to call it, a linear but wildly sexy perfume that is so under the radar that there'd be no one who smells like you in the vicinity! and in a good way. Easily the best synthetic frangipani scent money can buy... truly a great iteration of the (dark) white floral theme.

WOW! What a beautiful floral aldehydic perfume. I don’t usually blind buy fragrances but I have not yet been disappointed in any of Margielas fragrances and I am so glad I decided to buy this one. It’s such a beautiful floral, I get the frangipanni right away and it’s breathtaking then a very clean jasmine pops up. I can’t get enough of smelling my arm. I just may buy a back up. I love it that much. And yes I do get the Alien comparison, I love Alien so it’s all good 😊

Dancing On The Moon: this scent is so warm, rounded, feminine, dense and sweet in a perfect and sensual, not too cloying way. I fully understand when some of you write, that if you are an Alien fan, this one is very easy to like as well. I really do like both of them :) The jasmin in this one is really juicy, dense, charming, powerful and seductive, I think, and the lasting power is okay. I can smell it on and around me for several hours (6+)

I was immediately hooked when I smelled it for the first time, even though I do think is leans feminine smelling but I just love it so much that I would wear it. In terms of smell is quite unique unlike anything I've smelt before and imo suits the name Dancing on the moon alot, it's like this airy like space smelling floral scent, very clean and suitable for all season.

I’m really surprised this doesn’t get more love. Now, I realize the name is misleading a bit as “Dancing on the moon” is not what this evokes in me. However, the scent itself is very pleasant. It’s a pretty white floral. Nothing more or less really ( to my nose) but I do really like the floral blend. If you like white florals give it a try.

This is stunning fragrance. Words cannot describe it. Try it on a sunny day and you will never forget it. I haven’t found anything similar to it. Feminine, euphoric and unique. Ethereal, out of this world beautiful with a very fitting name dancing on the moon. Available again at Harrods.

Beautiful fragrance, disappointing bottle. Mine leaked during air travel despite being taped. I hope this issue gets addressed because the scent deserves a better bottle.

TL;DR: if you ever wondered what the love child of Alien + No 5 smells like, get you some of this. I've had this silly irrational fear that by posting my review of this scent, the last few bottles on Ebay would disappear. I need to pull my head out of my booty and realize that most people don't give a rat's ass about my opinion. That being said, this reminds me a lot of what I remember the pre-reformulated Alien smelling like, but mix it with some big No 5 aldehydes, and throw some powder from No 19 Poudre in there, while you're at it. It's a lot going on, but none of it clashes. I ordered 3 carded samples on Ebay, and I'm still on the fence on whether or not I really want a full bottle. If you had asked me 3 months ago, I would have Added to Cart without a second thought. Now that my wardrobe is filling up (quite literally) and my wallet is dwindling, I'm trying to be much more deliberate with my fragrance purchases and only buying full bottles of established "Loves" at great (30% off or more) prices. Longevity might be what sways me away from making a full bottle purchase, as is with most of MMM Replica creations, I only get about 5-6 hours of wear with this. That being said, I still have acquired many of the scents from this house because of their beauty and novelty, and I understand that most of the the scents are EdT. I find it immensely interesting that this is supposed to be an EdP, but has the longevity of an EdT.

I received a sample of this yesterday and I'm going to need a full bottle stat. This is a sweet floral to my nose, the frangipani and jasmine are intertwined beautifully, while the cashmere type note kind of rounds it out, no sharp edges or spice here. Underlying is a fresh, clean base, not really crisp or soapy. If you're looking for a heavily layered classic, this is not going to be your perfume. If you just want a clean, soft beautifully done floral with a decent lasting power you may want to give this a try. (over 5 hours on me! That's insane, I never have perfume last that long!) If I were to compare this to anything I might compare it to Jasmine Rouge by Tom Ford, but frankly I'd prefer this one. It's got Tom Ford beat in terms of sillage and longevity, especially for the price point. A previous reviewer said it was more feminine than masculine (paraphrasing), and to my own taste I would agree. There's not much here that I would consider a "masculine" type scent, not sure why it's even marketed as such. To each their own though. :)

I am confused by reviews describing it is metallic and cold, alien, mysterious... This is what attracted me to sample the perfume, I was enchanted by how others experienced it, hoping for something otherwordly and unique. That is the only reason I am disappointed: I like this perfume but it is almost opposite of what I was expecting. Opening note is sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. I was confused if I was just smelling my own sunscreen on my arm at first. So tropical!! After the sunscreen there are nice floral notes, vanilla. And, a powdery aftersmell that sits in the front of your nostrils by your nose tip. Boyfriend says closing notes of liquid Elmer's glue, but I couldn't smell it. I would only wear this in the summer and to a casual setting, somewhere it would be appropriate to smell heavily of sunscreen. I'm not sure it is worth buying as a full perfume, depend on your price, but definitely a good addition to a collection of light, summery beach scents. A great scent for someone young and carefree.

Dancing on the moon? Nah, more like dancing on the beach. At most I can picture myself lying on a tropical beach at night, looking up at the moon while sipping on a sweet, fruity drink. The scent of the sunscreen from earlier in the day, still lingering on my skin. The description says "floral minerality", but I'm mostly getting sweet, tropical flowers from this. Coconut, caramel and sweet flowers. I expected something way more cold and dry smelling. I mean, the aldehydes do cut through the sweet flowers pretty much from start to finish, but the mid and base notes really take over the show pretty early on and stay as the main players throughout. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice scent ,and I really like it. Just for different reasons than what I had imagined. The projection and staying power are both very good, and it does feel more like a niche/luxury type of scent. It is pretty expensive though, so it actually should perform well for the price, but in my experience it does, so it's all good.

Despite what I would consider a somewhat misleading name, this is a good fragrance. It was wholly unexpected, but I really enjoyed it. With its name and dark bottle, I was expecting something quite ethereal, deep, perhaps even effervescent. I knew from card I got with my sample that there was jasmine in it, and that's all I knew. Needless to say, I was very surprised to find this to be a frangipani scent. It's definitely one of the nicest frangipani scents I've smelled, but I would never have thought that would be the dominant note. The jasmine and cashmeran make the frangipani even more warm, rich and full-bodied. It's like a hug in flower form, but not one that's overbearing. Frangipani fans, definitely try this. It may quickly rise to the top of your favorites. I don't think I will need a full bottle of this but I'd be quite happy to wear the scent if I owned it. It's simple, yes, but charming and sweet.

I really like this perfume. It's a soft powdery floral, slightly tropical (from the frangipani) with a aldehydic chemical undertone which can be borderline piercing depending on the temperature. It is a little plasticky, yes but I think that adds to the vibe of the moon- a cold, bleak, remote place that only science can touch rather than us on Earth, who can only gaze at it in wonder, considering our own place in the stars. One of the reviews says it smells like those hippy 90s -esque shops and I totally get this. This actually works on my skin which is honestly a rarity as my skin chemistry really isn't the best. Definitely NOT a safe blind buy; if you are in UK, most John Lewis stores have testers out so please use that to check; it's such a gorgeous scent in concept but is very expensive and can be incredibly plasticky on some people.

I dont follow the Gender attributes in perfumes, so added this to our collection anyway. For me, it certainly has the effect of coming across more feminine due to that sweet floral vibe, but theres a light undertone which is holding the entire scent down from floating away. Perhaps that is what confuses me, makes me want to wear it. For me, it feels clean, fresh and airy, but not in a SOAPY way, (probably not explaining this how i want to) Ok, lets put it this way, if youre into manly scents, then this isnt one. But it IS a sweet gorgeous scent, with hidden hues that i enjoy trying to decipher. Still think by the fireplace outranks it though.

This is a nostalgic smell of me. It reminds me of being a teen in 90’s in a good way. Someone mentioned it smelled like 90’s indie shops, I get this. It reminds me of incense burning and happy vibes. I can’t pin point what else it reminds me of but it’s a very comforting and relaxing mix. I can smell the jasmine. I personally love this one and have bought a full size bottle. It’s Lou Lou Blue! That’s what this reminds me of! That was my signature scent in my teens & early 20’s. This is definitely similar. Love it!

This is what Lux Lisbon in The Virgin Suicides probably smelled like. This is silky soft aldehydes with florals (iris/jasmine/frangipani), settling into, again a very soft powdery musk. It's the baby pink rubber from the 90s that's supposed to smell like strawberry ice cream. It has some melancholy about it, I don't think I've ever smelled anything similar in a perfume. Not for me to wear, but interesting and memory-inducing.

Initially I absolutely loved this fragrance after testing it, but have since changed my mind and feel this just isn’t me. It’s a unique scent and I do feel it lasts. I’m selling my full bottle, new in box if anyone in the UK is interested. Selling at a good price. I guess it all depends on your compatibility with cashmeran. I don't feel anything harsh or chemical. No metal, no dust, no plastic. I was eager to smell those declared on the label minerals, but on my skin it's frangipani. Natural pure frangipani. It's not exactly what I expected, but I like it.

Another great fragrance from the replica line. These notes seem confusing, and the name makes you wonder, "How could this possibly be encapsulated in a fragrance??" and then you smell this, and you realize, yeah... this is it.

Interesting. It’s very summery, bright, floral and fresh. To me it’s somewhere between TF Neroli Portofino, SL Datura Noir and Zoologist Hummingbird. I think if you like any of those three, you’ll like this.

Smells like negative space, like a vacuum. To me it smells like the aldehydes play the lead role with the iris adding weightlessness. I’d also argue that it’s unisex

Not a blind buy. Enjoyable but on my skin comes through a little sunscreen. Really impressive complexity and smoothness.

A powdery yet tropical frangipani with brightness from the aldehydes and a clean soapy musk. This was not a love for me but I managed to get through a whole bottle for its sheer wearability. Airy, sunny and somewhat ethereal in a way that matched the otherworldly extra terrestrial theme of this collection. Uplifting and office appropriate. A shame that Margiela discontinued their longer lasting EDP range, in my opinion, they seemed more interesting and with stronger performance than their fleeting EDTs

so dry and sharp on the opening, like sheathes of thesis or divorce papers thrown at your face. cold, astringent, almost hotel room-like, or a luxury boutique with an unimpressed, snobby employee staring you down. immensely powdery at first, then a heady, seductive floral on double take. starry night sky above a snow-covered field; empty but dazzling. unreal, very intimidating, powerful (also.. intense cough syrup opening phew but it mellows into the most powdery floral)

I tried this once during Autumn, and it just really smells like a generic soap or hand wash to me, from the opening through to the dry-down. I can definitely see this being more of a summer fragrance and I’ll need to try it then to see if it smells different, or at least less soapy

Smells absolutely nothing like Alien. It does smell like Chanel. Y’all’s sniffers are broken. I can’t see myself wearing this, but it’s not at all bad.

The soapy aldehydic opening blooms into creamy Frangipani florals, then fades to a powdery musk dry down. Very light, crisp, and delicate.
