Eau de Parfum de George Sand

Chopin is soundtrack to my childhood. I don't exactly know why - it might be the ballet classes, my hair in a tight bun, pointe shoes and the incredible bliss and desperation of being 6 that evoke that time with Chopin playing in the back of my mind(useful note: I’m married to a classical composer). I don't understand or know how the olfactory notes of George Sand perfume have this organic tie to Chopin playing in the background of my childhood - surely it must be a trick my mind is playing - but I love this fragrance as I love my childhood. It is everything I want to remember from that time. My aunt used to have this coffret of Opium, I loved smelling not the bottle but the coffret itself, this one reminds me of that exact smell. I have also found that smelling the boxes of Niki de Saint Phalle and Miss Dior and Byzance gave that same feeling of transport back in time. Is this a helpful review of a fragrance who wants to know about this perfume? Probably not. But if you love all things old world, you will like George Sand somehow.

If you're familiar with the character of George Sand you'll probably realize that this composition by JF Laporte is a real homage to an unconventional lady, responsible of memorable novels as well as being one of the first women to fight for women's rights. Uncompromising yet classic, resolute yet romantic and absolutely unforgettable. And that's exactly how this perfume smells. A dark opening with a threatening patchouli note joined by rose and contrasted by a strident - yet barely perceptible - bitter citrus. Scary, mysterious but absolutely compelling and somehow familiar. It quickly turns to a very classic sandalwood / patchouli / musk drydown of rare perfection. An incredibly solid composition that's classic in the structure but masterfully orchestrated to perfectly pay homage to one of the most controverisal writer/personality of the '800. Rating: 8.5/10

I tested this before I read harlequin1572's review. I guess I must be one of those "I am woman, hear me roar." type of folks, then. This perfume ensnares me, enraptures me......it IS me, only better smelling! J'adore. I immediately tried to buy it as soon as it hit my skin. Alas it was no longer for sale...anywhere. But, luck smiled, I happened upon a private source, and bought all that he had - 40ml. I am NOT going to hoard this one. I shall wear with abandon as often as I like. Fortunately, this is very potent and one dab will do you. I am not educated enough yet to discuss notes. My source did call this a "wonderful chypre" and although that's not how it is classified here, his description may add to review reader's understanding of this WOW juice.
