Iris Bleu Gris

You know those mornings that are cool but damp? The air has a presence. That cold humidity seems to sink into your skin. It's never sunny on these mornings. The light is usually cloudy, overcast, and diffused. That's what this Iris perfume reminds me of, diffused grey blue light, thick air, a quiet morning shaded from the sun. This iris is not floral but rooty and even a bit dry. And flanked heavily with woody notes. In fact I can smell in equal parts the iris, the vetiver, and the oakmoss. The iris may be blue and rooty, but the woods have a decidedly green dried grass cast to them. The woody notes add a lot of heft to the perfume, and give it a solid, thick, radiant personality. There is also the lime note that veers into masculine aftershave territory. In the top notes the lime aftershave accord is especially strong, but it tends to mellow out with the wear. That along with a musk that comes out in the heart are what makes this perfume pleasantly masculine, but honestly, I feel very comfortable wearing this. In fact in a crazy way it makes me feel kind of sexy when I wear it. I'm not sure why. I'm definitely an iris lover, but they are not typically sexy perfumes...this is though. Excellent lasting power with a few sprays, silage dies down after an hour or so but is always detectable. I'm reviewing the older red bottle.

Green bergamot lemon spicy oakmoss earthy iris soapy chypre Iris Bleu Gris is a fragrance i can't quite wrap my mind around. On one hand it's quite bright fizzy and citric, but simulatenously heavy on the earthy moss accords. The two poles seemed to be joined by the soft soapy clean iris accord, i presume emulating both the soft tender aromatic qualities of iris and the darker mossy woody earthy undertones. Don't expect a modern evocation of iris, the overtly baby powder like, make up like elements are not to be seen here. This is a more solemn composition with a full clean and soapy focus and the aforementioned brooding mossy earthy undertones. At the same time there is a strong green citrus flash in the opening, not particularly tart but rather sparkling perhaps a touch aldehydic. Unlisted I get a lot of spice in the opening and some soft sandalwood raw material in the base, but this may be olfactory cross over from whatever oakmoss substitute is being used here. Good stuff, worth looking into.

One of the most velvety iris fragrances I know. Grey velvet to be precise, silvery and pale. It is a beautiful scent, understated, with that velvety, melancholic, misty iris set off against a dash of citrus in the top, a whisper of jasmine in the heart and a carpet of moss in the base. Softspoken and flawlessly elegant, Iris Bleu Gris is poetry in a bottle. I prefer to wear it in the colder months, when the vanilla note is kept in very good check. It can be a bit cloying in warmer weather.

I have tried a number of IRIS scents thanks to LUCKYSCENT.com for their samples... Iris Bleu Gris is the affordable one I chose to purchase has a lush powdery leathery feeling and I love to wear this on a sunny day while wearing a crisp starched blue shirt ....

This fragrance is truly beautiful. It is so elegant, versatile and clean. I can't believe I waited this much to dive into this house. I really love their blending!

Maître Parfumeur et Gantier is a natural-smelling, grounded iris perfume, which I consider to be fully unisex, despite its masculine classification. I was drawn to this creation by a variety of factors which conspired to impel me eventually to buy a bottle blind, going against my current policy. First, I love iris, and having some familiarity with the house, I knew that I'd encounter the real deal in any perfume bearing that name. Second, the name itself is quite evocative to me. I love the connotations and associations of blue gray, and an iris thus tinged sounded irresistible. The final factor was jtd's review, basically confirming what I had suspected, that this composition would indeed feature iris in all its glory. No buyer's remorse here, to say the least. This stuff is gorgeous. Is it masculine? No, not to me. It is not at all sweet, but it also lacks all of the usual suspect notes which mark masculine colognes. To me, IRIS BLEU GRIS toes the line between masculine and unisex, but it never crosses it. There are days when a scent like this is perfect for me. It has a green, almost vegetal quality, as though the iris has been cut and the stems are freshly wafting of the wet inside of an iris plant. There is also a lovely woody aspect to this fragrance, which reminds a lot of the Miller Harris woody perfumes. I'd say that the quality of the perfumes of Maître Parfumeur et Gantier and those of Miller Harris is very similar, especially as regards the dominant use of natural materials. IRIS BLEU GRIS is only for iris lovers, but any true iris lover should not pass this contemplative beauty by. Vetiver shines through clearly in the drydown, but the iris is there, too.

What a fantastic fragrance. Smells great. Each note projects equally. I am getting citrus, earth, musk and spices. I can’t speak to performance yet as I have only been wearing it for a short time. I got this in a mystery box from the perfume guy. Everyone should smell this. I feel like I have stepped into a perfume museum. This is absolutely lovely. A real Time Machine this. “Can you believe they passed the Married Women's Property Act? Outrageous! Well sir it is the 80s after all. Balderdash, the next thing you know they will want to wear pants, vote and have bank accounts. Utter folly, they are far too emotional to be trusted with such matters. Best they stick to what they know. Looking pretty, smelling good and running the household. Now Jeeves affix my spatterdashes, and avail me of my monocle, gloves and walking stick. Then bring around the penny farthing for it is the ideal way to peregrinate this eventide. Ah, what an effulgent moon. I have tarried long enough, mustn’t be late for the conclave.” End scene. I've just bought a bottle second hand and it leaked a bit in the package, so when I opened it I had a full on exposure to it. So I can testify that both sillage and endurance are exceptional - the whole house smells of it, despite keeping the windows open for hours. And having handled it, it is practically impossible to wash off. But setting aside this mishap, the fragrance is quite interesting and original in its treatment of the iris within a strong citrus and oakmoss envelope. There is a hint of a floral undertone that ties in with the iris, which gives it an ever so slight feminine edge. The overall feel is quite retro/vintage, but in a good way.

52) This little brand is a institution (like Guerlain), they own the best Vetiver (close to Vetiver Extraordinaire)they own the best sandalwood (without rival), they own the best Amber, they own the second best Iris (behind Iris Silver Mist) and much more... Jean-Paul Millet (with Jean-François Laporte) is in the Panthéon of the perfumery. A pilgrimage in this brand is an ogligation for each perfumista.

I like it for old school aspects of the perfume, it’s not something I could wear today,

The "overture" make me think of a what could be a bar of soap in the 1800. Yes a creamy oily soap made with iris root powder. This Iris oily natural sensation of violette persists until the end (almost days!) but must be obviously synthetic. At the end it turns in something green and light fruity. If i should guess the elements that compose this scent I could say there is a large amount of white sandal and woodsy note, plus raspberry and a teaspoon of melon. Sometimes in the heart i feel that sandal side you find in Samsara (Guerlain), Nocturnes (Caron), the vintage version of Via Condotti (Lancetti),the drydown is almost identical to Yendi de Capucci (the fovourite fragrance of my mother) or the sister Babe (Revlon). I mention all these scent for women in part to say that I.B.G. really make me think of a sandal oakmoss white flowers based perfume, and in part to say that this is a scent for man as Coco Mademoiselle could be (I did not mention it by chance but cause it is one a bit masculine as scent). When I like a fragrance: I wear it (maybe just at home) and I don't mind if is for man or woman. Just I don't want to encourage a blind buy with this cause son man could be embaracced in wearing it. Even if it is quite dry The Dandy fence is not enough to contain this transexual frag. Or unisex as you prefer. I like this fragrance. Is very unusual. So warm white.

What does it mean to be blue and grey? Perhaps a little bit melancholic, that Romantic desease that want us to long for something outside our league, yet believing that is reachable. Iris Blue Gris opens with a blast of hyper-realistic and earthy iris root joined by bitter - and I mean VERY BITTER and "wet" green notes, accompanied by a good quality citric lemon. Outstanding, magistral and even challenging for it's extreme bitterness. It turns then to a more conventional, yet absolutely compelling middle phase where iris plays its main part. This is reminiscent of Hiris, that very nebolous feeling. Unfortunately, the bitter green aspect of the opening that in this phase has morphed to a soapy "cleanness" softening the initial austerity. Gentle, suave and well refined (too much for my taste), but after the promising opening it leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. The base is classical moss with earthy aspects and some musks. For those who think that Dior Homme is the first iris targeted to men, should revisit their history book ;) IG @alexolympia6

It turns then to a more conventional, yet absolutely compelling middle phase where iris plays its main part. What disappoints me is the bitter green aspect of the opening that in this phase has morphed to a soapy "cleanness" softening the initial austerity. Gentle, suave and well refined (too much for my taste), but after the promising opening it leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. Overall this is a very good fragrance highly recommended to anyone who loves iris root but also to the ones of you who simply want to releate with a master composition. Rating: 8/10

Great treatment of iris root. It's there at all times; in the green soapy topnotes; in the rootlike yet powery heart; in the dry double root base of iris and vetiver. We tend to compare iris fragrances. The scent of iris root and the aromachemicals used to recreate it comprise such a particular yet complex set of notes that comparison is almost inevitable. Dior Homme, Chanel 19, Iris Silver Mist, Ferre by Gianfranco Ferre. Yup. The most directly comparable perfume, though is the wonderful and underestimated Bas de Soie from Serge Lutens. Iris Bleu Gris doesn't have Bas de Soie's metal cum hyacynth notes, but otherwise the heart and base, and the trajectories they follow are very close. We speak as if Dior Homme created the first masculine iris. Jean Laporte thought to release an iris-centered fragrance in the early 1980s and it's still with us 30 years later.

The bitterish presence of oakmoss is upfront and around in this juice, and I believe is what contributes to its "retro" feel. It is beautifully enveloped by a coming and going iris, that sometimes feels rooty, sometimes feels lipsticky. The fragrance feels green to me, but not herbal, as the iris definitely keeps its presence. I do not smell any vetiver and maybe a minor presence of citrus. This has a wonderful 70's vibe without feeling it came from the 70's. You could say that Grey Flannel may be its "disco" cousin, however, Iris bleu is more refined and definitely less harsh than GF. I found a resemblance to the iris in Cuir Ottoman in the drydown of Iris bleu... Maitre is a marvelous brand whose juices, despite the reformulations, evolve beautifully versus today's plain and linear offerings.

This is one I break out for special occasions. It feels too classy to wear to work or for normal days. It's in the style of many MPG fragrances by Jean-Francois Laporte. There's one or two dominant naturals as its centerpiece with other notes supporting it. In this case the natural is Iris/Orris but it's not supported by what you'd expect. It's got green notes (leaves) earthy notes of vetiver and moss & there's a touch of vanilla in the background as well. When I put it on, especially if it's been awhile, I'm reminded how special it is.

Yes, it's a bit like Grey Flannel initially, but that doesn't last long. There's an interesting contrast between a dry, dusty quality and a sharp, citrusy one. It's almost industrial smelling, so I can understand that some would not find it especially pleasant (it's got no more than a hint of sweetness). And it's not especially dynamic nor complex, though it does smell natural. All that said, my main issue is that it's not strong enough. At a considerably lower price it would be a buy for me (I obtained my bottle in a swap).

Do you remember the smell of that old bottle of vintage perfume that had lost all it's top notes and left only the classic chypre bottom of green soapy galbanums and dark oakmoss? This smells like that on me. It morphs a bit as it dries to give me some aldehydes and smooth florals, but mostly it reminds me of vintage perfumes that I don’t really love. My sister adores it, though; she does like those oakmossy green chypres of the long past.

I’m very glad I bought samples from Luckyscent - enough to try spraying and dabbing. Going by descriptions and reviews, I’d expected this to greener, with a more bitter, irisy bent. Alas what I get is the far drydown of long spent chypres, nondescript but vaguely mossy, clinging to a blouse that's been hanging in a forgotten spare room wardrobe for years. This is very much a “base” scent, it doesn’t smell finished/complete to me.

Kissing cousin of Grey Flannel - except done with Iris rather than violets & with less of the synthetic sandalwood and more vetiver for the woody base. Either way, just like GF (and related ones like GIT or CW), a very fine fragrance - but unlike those which play in just cool tones, this is wrapped in the opulent softness of the iris accord that brings it a thin veneer of warmth. Fantastic, especially in fall/winter times!

This is a straight chypre. Not sure why it's marketed as an "iris". Even calling it Chypre Bleu Gris would have made more sense. It's closer to Balmain's Ivoire and even Jacomo Silences than to Hermes' Hiris. Definitely not an iris soliflore. Wonderful chypre, just the naming is strange.

This is from 1988!!! I should have read that date first, but yea here we are in 2026... Smells like something from that era, clean, expensive soap. Unfortunately, it's very outdated and simply has no place in today's world. No offense to whoever is over 95 and wears this!

i want to revisit this years later after having an experience with iris silver mist. i recall this MPG iris being more leathery? even reminding me of grey flannel for some reason. powdery dry not necessarily floral but interesting

Very nice chypre scent, green, mossy, soapy. The Iris note here is very subtle. This is a handsome men only scent.
