Maksim Perfume’s Bestia Sacra is nothing short of a revelation—a fragrance that feels like stepping into a sacred, ancient temple where time slows and the air hums with reverence. This scent is a masterful blend of resinous opulence and primal allure, weaving a spell that’s both haunting and divine. From the first spray, Bestia Sacra unfurls with a rich, smoky veil of frankincense, its sacred depth intertwined with the raw, animalic pulse of civet and castoreum. These notes don’t just linger—they prowl, commanding attention with their unapologetic intensity. Myrrh and opoponax add a bittersweet warmth, grounding the fragrance in a resinous embrace that feels like an offering to the gods. The base of oakmoss, benzoin, and labdanum is a lush, earthy anchor, lending a timeless, almost mystical quality that lingers on the skin like a sacred vow. This perfume is a powerhouse—its projection is immense, filling the space around you with just a few sprays, yet it never overwhelms, only captivates. The longevity is extraordinary; it clings to you for hours, evolving beautifully while retaining its core character. Every whiff feels like a rediscovery, pulling you back to inhale deeply, lost in its intoxicating aura. Maksim has crafted something truly extraordinary with Bestia Sacra. It’s not just a fragrance—it’s an experience, a journey into the sacred and the wild. I can’t stop smelling it, and I don’t want to. If you’re seeking a scent that’s bold, resinous, and utterly unforgettable, this is it. A masterpiece. 10 out of 10.

Bestia Sacra errs far more on the side of “sacred” than “beast.” The opening can certainly be described as beastly with its overdose of bergamot, nagarmotha, and castoreum. It’s loud, and it’s a lot. The nagarmotha and the castoreum roar in concert, harmonizing the animalics. Castoreum’s animalic timbre is leathery and oily, while nagarmotha’s timbre is the smell of sweat, dirt, and decay. But then quickly we all calm down and relax to enjoy what is really just a civet-forward incense amber. Bestia Sacra is properly musky/civet-y in the dry down, make no mistake about that, but it’s not shouting at you and it does not feel lewd. To newer and modern noses it is probably too much, but those attuned to and keen to the old school ways will recognize this perfume immediately. The frankincense accord is beautiful. Its supple and smooth curves keep the civet accord on the good side of behavior. Your standard amberics of mosses, sandalwood, and labdanum are in the mix to help keep things stately and elegant in the tried-and-true manner of woody resins. There’s not much else to say, really. We’ve had a million and one of these perfumes before, and Bestia Sacra is just as good as any of them - but perhaps that’s why it should stand out today. Very few perfume houses have the cajones to make something like this anymore, even though once upon a time it was the most popular of perfume genres. For the bravery to so blatantly pull from the past, to compose it very well indeed, and then shove it in our faces, bravo, Mr. Bortnikov.

Opening with a pleasant but fleeting burst of tart bergamot and piney frankincense before quickly blooming into the delightful musk bomb the name promises, I find this blend to be light enough to have some mass appeal, and musky enough to satisfy some light to mid-weight musk aficionados—though the more heavyweight of the bunch may find it just slightly wanting. Being among the mid-range myself, I find it quite nice and rather deftly blended, with the aspects of each musk showcased while not overpowering one another. I consider the base to be a perfect general compliment to the heart and head with the cypriol, labdanum, oakmoss, sandalwood and benzoin providing just the right amounts of smokiness, mossiness, woodiness and benzoic facets (cinnamic, vanillic, cola-like) to give the base-like heart notes proper contrast and support. Sillage is low to moderate, longevity high. Will my hunt for a Musk Holy Grail continue beyond this? We’ll have to see... Bravo!

A gorgeous beautifully constructed animalic chypre scent, this is one of the finest releases of this year. What makes this scent so memorable is that in spite of its heavy animalic notes, it unfurls like a luxurious tapestry on your skin in each shimmering delicate layer after layer. The scent opens with notes of bergamot and incense and starts transitioning into a heart of animal musks, slight birch tar and cypriol. Finally it settles on a powdery base of oakmoss, sandalwood, benzoin and labdanum. The slight masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong projection and very good longevity. Absolutely must try for incense and animalic lovers, but those afraid of those two genres please tread cautiously. Fantastic!

Oh my God! What is this addictive stench, what a creation of Maksim, this is so animal in its start that you could invoke the devil himself, so different from the other creations of this same perfumer. Beast Sacra is so primitive, beautiful and full of urine, that you might think that the neighbor's cat came to piss you. Without a doubt, the Italian bergamot it claims to have, perfectly weighs this incredible creation. It is not for the weak its use and if for the strong of animal heart, come and receive an animal shower rain. Cheers!

The Sacred Beast. Yes, a kind of beast which is not tame, but projects a well blended scent of civet, catstoreum, oud and musk. It may sound frightening, but it is not. Compared to other animalics, it is well behaved, and I feel comfortable wearing it in public. It is long lasting and dries down to a masculine skin scent.

What Hyrax could have been Oh, man. Bestia Sacra (sacred beast) is toe-curling-ly awesome. It opens with a blast of bergamot and incense, the citrus being very sharp. That doesn't last long and as it quickly recedes, the beautiful animalics present themselves. While they are strong, I didn't get any barnyard or fecal type smell. Just, well, a great blend of civet, musk and castoreum. As the base notes appear, the animalic scent goes down a notch and it's smoothed out mainly by the labdanum, sandalwood and benzoin. I didn't really get a strong woody component. It's this end point (which doesn't take too long to arrive) that is absolute heaven. Miles ahead in scent and quality from Zoologist's Hyrax. Bestia Sacra is strongly animalic, but smoothed out and totally wearable. Stag from the House of Orpheus is a similar fragrance. Stag is stronger than Bestia Sacra and a more difficult wear. Stag also has a rubbery and even metallic component which is present but much more subdued in Bestia Sacra. I'd say that Stag is Bestia Sacra done with a heavier hand. While Bestia Sacra and Stag both have good longevity, Stag has much stronger projection making it less versatile. Besetia Sacra is an intimate scent - it hugs the skin. It's also what I'd call a masculine body scent - the skin smell of a guy or his t-shirt after a long day - but not pit stink. Similar idea as Zaharoff's Signature Royale XXXL, only Bestia Sacra is much better and stronger in animalics. I'm going to have to get a FB of this baby. First Maksim fume I've tested. Looking forward to the other three samples I have. If you're a guy who hasn't tried animalics before, proceed with caution. Also, while Bestia Sacra is great for intimate moments, if your woman is only used to her man smelling like candy and bubblegum, Bestia Sacra will present quite a challenge to her as well.

By far one of the most interesting fragrances I've tried. Bestia Sacra is quite an unusual fragrance to my nose because castoreum has a distinct brand new tire-like rubber smell, and such a scent being the most prominent aspect of a fragrance and said fragrance being so likeable is very surprising and commendable. During the early opening there's a light citrusy note and a soft wood surrounding the castoreum, it smells extremely refined and very likeable. Part of it also reminded me of Chypre de Grand, which I wore yesterday, but obviously they're fragrances that are worlds apart overall. Up close the castoreum takes on a much softer and sweeter characteristic, surprisingly, it's almost velvety and with a light leathery facet. As it dries the rubber smell from the castoreum surreptitiously morphs into a frankincensey note, more alike to something you'd smell in Amouage's fragrances. In the end Bestia Sacra was unexpectedly an extremely nice wear and quite a unique fragrance among the ~500 or so fragrances I've sampled so far but this scent profile doesn't resonate with me that much. My biggest gripe with it is that, despite getting a light and non-invasive sillage from this I did feel it in my throat during the first two hours or so, and naturally it's not pleasant wearing a fragrance that'll irritate my throat. Definitely worth sampling, and it's up there with Oud Indochine as one of Maksim's best.

First time I sprayed this on, I sat in a car with 5 coworkers.. 😁. One of the coworkers said " What's that scent?" "Has somebody been to a yoga class"? My reply, yeah that's me! But, No. I don't do yoga, what you're picking up is the frankincense, that association with the holiness, temple smoke! Shortly after the beast arrives, like somebody has used smoke to summon a beast. Not a Stinky beast but a raw beastly animal scent. Not the wet furr, not piss, but just raw leathery type. A challenging beast? Make no mistake, yes indeed!

Bestia Sacra opens with a gradually thickening carpet of dusty beige musks and straight-up zoo animal smell. I usually like animalics, but this is aversive to me. We are literally in a lion cage. Gradually, the stank calms down slightly and I get some faint tendrils of sweetness underneath, and a plush, creamy texture. But it's still very, very stinky at this phase; just stinky like perfume rather than literal animals. It's starting to get satisfyingly dank, like Oudh Infini, another barnyardy animalic, though, as i'm realizing, Bestia Sacra leaves Oudh Infini in the dust as far as stinkiness goes. By about the 1-hour mark, a sort of creamy-shining note predominates and the stank is more of a background hum. There's also a faint prickle of dry smoke. This phase is quite lovely. Bestia Sacra is clearly designed for the most intense animalic aficionados. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who's not a stank-fiend, and even if you are, it's a tossup. I love strongly animalic scents like Bal a Versailles and Muscs Koublaï Khan, and I still found Bestia Sacra too much. But if you're that outlier-level musk-lover, Bestia Sacra is a quality perfume. The plush texture is fantastic, the soft smoky drydown quietly beautiful.

Corporeal incense An incense not of stone, but of flesh. A brief lift of bergamot and frankincense gives way to a dense core where myrrh and opoponax merge with civet and castoreum, producing a warm, distinctly animalic effect. The incense remains present but secondary, threaded through a composition defined by an almost unsettling sense of bodily proximity. As it evolves, the intensity softens and a subtle leather facet emerges, shaping the dry down into a more enveloping, balsamic warmth where the animalic presence becomes tempered yet still perceptible. A carnal and deliberately challenging incense perfume that reimagines sacred ritual through animalic intimacy.

Really smells like an animal. Great job. Gives me an impression of deep warm dark fur. What sort of animal is it? Do I dare to pet it? Do I dare to become it? (I have the perfect occasion to wear this sample next year during the Power Animals theme week on the Gourmands board.)

I liked this when I tested a single tiny drop from the sample dabber but now that I've tried putting on a larger amount it oddly gave me an off plastic accord.

The Keepers: a Netflix series about a murdered young nun in the 60s. She was gonna expose horrific abuse in a Catholic girl’s school involving pedo priests and government black hats. She was in star-crossed love with a seminarian. They were planning to run off. He becomes a suspect. Months later, these shady CIA types interview him, and during they toss a folded up piece of newspaper at him and he says to the camera, with utter sincerity, that in the folded up newspaper was the dead nun’s vag. Screen memory! I thought. LSD! MK Ultra! Someone else apparently thought I wonder what that smelled like.

Phew, this is a tough one. Full on barnyard smell that didn't calm down on my skin at all. I eventually had to wash it off. This is the first fragrance that I've ever had to do that with. It might be someone's cup of tea but it's not mine, unfortunately.

I used to really enjoy animalic perfumes and smelling like a civet cat's butt was a delight, but I feel I may have changed my mind because putting this on this morning, even immediately after a shower, felt like a horrible bad idea. I smell filthy dirty, not in a make-you-blush kind of way, but rather a nasty unclean dirty, like I am soiled. The more the day goes on the less horrified I am by it however, indeed it does have a certain compelling quality to it, but indeed many people are compelled to sniff their fingers after scratching their arse so I'm not sure if 'compelling' is redeeming enough for me to give this a thumbs up. My colleague's eyes, however, rolled back in her head. She rubbed her forearm against my wrist to steal the scent from me, and proceeded to disassociate in bliss. It smelled much nicer on her than on me. So I would say I feel mixed about this, maybe it lacks 'top' and would layer well with something floral, or frankincensey, and this could be a very successful base layer for someone who likes to build themselves form the ground up with different scents. I will say, that IMHO this would only work in very very dry and cold weather - it is still humid where I live now, and even hot during the height of the sun despite the radio playing Christmas carols, and this is not a scent for such a warm climate. If there is snow on the ground and you're wrapped in fox furs and sheepskins this may be just the ticket, and though unisex I think this is better on a lady than a man. Mind you, the more time passes the less soiled it smells and the more it becomes sensual. Definitely needed time to breathe, either way it is definitely NSFW or office, admittedly it is sexy but more like a slattern than a coquette. After the shocking first few hours it becomes quite something...now compelling has turned to addictive.... though I'm a bit self-conscious wearing this nevertheless. So if you like unashamedly animalic fragrances this might well be your cup of tea, but people will talk about you shamelessly behind your back and may not say the nicest things about your character or your cleanliness.... though may secretly envy your confidence and prowess.

Such a beautifully blended scent. You get a lot of amber mixed with animalic notes, but the labdanum and bergamot helps brighten it up. Frankincense is the star of the show for sure. It is very powerful and straight in your face. I’d say it’s more recommended for the colder seasons and I totally enjoy it at every occasion. But be careful, this is not your tipical woody fragrance; it uses high quality ingredients so definitely smells different than others, and some may find that appealing and some won’t. I surely see that in a good way and trust me, it helps the performance a lot; it is extremely powerful. So if you want a smooth woody-amber fragrance with some musk as well and also want to smell unique and powerful, this is the one.

For true animalic lovers. Bestia Sacra is a sacred beast: raw, resinous, musky, and deeply primal. The opening glows with incense, but the heart is where it roars — musk, civet, castoreum fused with myrrh and balsamic resins. Wild, intimate, almost spiritual The drydown wraps the whole animalic storm in warm sandalwood, oakmoss, and labdanum. It’s dirty, elegant, addictive — a refined beast in a bottle If you crave real animalics, this is one of the most impressive releases of the year

This smells like my yorkie mutt Rufus when he curls up next to me in winter time. He’s got this soft long fur, and smells unbelievably good when he gets cozy. It’s a strange smell to be smitten by, but here I am.
