Café Mystique

Review for Maksim Perfume's Cafe Mystique Cafe Mystique is an amazing fragrance. I didn't know what to expect with it and wasn't expecting to love it so much. I'm not a huge fan of coffee fragrances, but this one is a massive exception. You get a little bit of coffee, but definitely the flowers and cardamom, as well as old frankincense and myrrh, all make it a very sweet, wonderful, and comforting coffee scent. The coffee note is present but not overpowering, adding just the right touch to the overall composition. The projection and longevity are very good, as with all of the Maksim fragrances. High-quality ingredients and a really amazing experience wearing this. It's just a comforting fragrance for about any day. I rate it 10/10 and highly recommend it. How It Makes You Feel Wearing Cafe Mystique is like wrapping yourself in a warm, cozy blanket on a chilly day. The blend of coffee, flowers, cardamom, frankincense, and myrrh creates a comforting and soothing aura that can uplift your mood and make you feel relaxed and content. It's a fragrance that evokes a sense of calm and tranquility, making it perfect for any occasion when you want to feel at ease and pampered.

Well blended natural woody aromatic scent that beautifully evokes the olfactory vibes of a Southeast Asian market cafe in the morning. The scent opens with notes of coffee, pepper, bergamot and cardamom. The brief floral heart has labdanum, frangipani and ylang. The perfume settles soon into a woody base of oud, incense, vetiver, vanilla and beeswax. The unisex scent has moderate to strong sillage and very good longevity. Coffee scent lovers cannot miss this. Enjoy!

I have been no less than enthralled by the offerings of Maksim Perfumes in my current and complete exploration of the brand’s lineup, but, now, here, with Cafe Mystique, must I bow down to Maxim Bortnikov: finally a perfumer has delivered a coffee accord for us enthusiasts of the ancient brew. Though, I have to admit, this is not much like the vast majority of coffees I have smelled in my very comprehensive experience. It is far more floral and far more piquantly spiced then the majority of coffees out there, which, generally have fruity, caramely, earthy, baking spice, honey, and/or other such aromas - rarely flowers and peppercorns, which Cafe Mystique has in abandon. In fact, Cafe Mystique is - shock and awe - another oud perfume from Maksim! What?! No way?! Yes - indeed! Though I need to be careful here in description. Though Bortnikov loves his South Asian oud materials, and uses them all of the time and with a heavy hand, they are exceptional oud materials that have very chameleonic qualities. And, to Bortnikov’s credit as a nose, he displays in Cafe Mystique that he fully grasps the subtleties and complexities of his superb materials, and has a hand capable of precise steering inputs to bring those subtleties to the fore or keep them towards the back. Coffee: touches of fruity acids from actual coffee materials, plus the oily and pithy bitter bergamot that Bortnikov loves for more bitter and acidic effects; vanillic caramel; baking spices in the form of cardamom and touches of cinnamon. A touch of cool and sweetened cream to your coffee?: frangipani and yang-ylang give a sweetened, milky, custardy feel while also pushing their tropical floral qualities a bit farther to the fore than would be expected; a slick, pollen laden beeswax note in the base helps this along. How about a quick, tiny shot of vanilla syrup to pair with the custardy florals and baking spices? Here you go. So where is the oud? It’s living mostly in the dry down, only peaking its head out with its fruity and floral high notes towards the upper layers of the perfume, and with a quiet and gentle voice at that. But before I get to that, more evident in the dry down is vetiver with its salty, swampy, and acrid facets carrying coffee’s green-fruity-acid facet from the top. Some resinous and green incense helps with this, in addition to providing greater breadth and depth. Clever, and very well done. The oud becomes more obviously apparent later in the dry down by evoking coffee’s earthy and compost-like notes, and continuing to gain strength to the skin scent where Cafe Mystique ends. Ok, I take it back, this isn’t really a coffee perfume for coffee lovers. However, it is a perfume for those who love the myriad of notes coffee can have. In summation, I’m never truly convinced with the perfume that I’m holding a cup of freshly-ground brew up to my nose and giving it a big, deep whiff, but all of the notes I could hope for are here. And, thanks to Bortnikov’s style, they are given the appropriate amount of richness, strength and muscularity yet supple nuances that I need. I might just make a cuppa right now.

Testing Cafe Mystique gave me a very interesting experience. Opening seemed to be a smoother, blended scent than I would have guessed from pepper and bergamot. Perhaps the coffee note smoothed it out? But I didn't get any coffee scent at this stage. What exactly is Kopi Luwak coffee? A quick Google revealed that it's a special and expensive coffee, the bean of which is harvested from the poop of a South Asian civet. The civet eats the coffee cherries and can only partially digest them, leaving the intact beans in its poop. How weird is that? Cheap coffee brands in the USA (e.g. Folgers, Hills Bros.) are about 50 cents an ounce; Kopi Luwak on Amazon goes for $3 to $9 and ounce. Amazing. But does it really add anything special? I guess one of these days I'll have to buy some Kopi Luwak coffee and try it. lol After the brief opening, I was disappointed to detect the appearance of a strong cardamom scent. Really thought at this point Cafe Mystique was not for me as I'm not a big fan of a very strong cardamom note. But a little patience on my part paid off big. The scent began to bloom. The frangipani and ylang-ylang came in, rendering it more fruity than floral, and slightly sweet. The resins also came into play along with the beeswax and oud, giving it a little subtle funky background. Coffee scent was there, but in no way overwhelming. It just added something extra. I wouldn't call this a "coffee fragrance". By this time, I was freaking out - man, is this good. Maksim has another winner here. Straight on the shopping list. (When I can actually afford to buy it, is something else.) Performance was super. It was still going pretty strong for me as a skin scent and the scent bubble was about 6' out for a good few hours. Towards the end, it had evolved into a plainer woody type of scent. But the best part, where the middle and base notes had bloomed, lasted the longest compared to the other stages. Overall, very impressed.

Chocolatey and creamy with a powdery dry cocoa feel. Smooth, soft oud blends gently with spicy amber and delicate florals. There’s a faint trail of smoke in the background. 23 minutes in: Creamy cocoa takes the lead with a slight bitter edge. Soft, mellow oud comes through, finishing with a touch of light animalic notes and a subtle plastic-like nuance. Gentle florals rise alongside earthy amber-balsamic undertones. 46 minutes in: Dry, powdery cocoa paired with creamy depth. Smooth oud remains, supported by a touch of balsamic warmth, soft animalic hints, and spicy amber. There’s a fresh green-spicy touch, grounded by earthy tones. 1 hour 14 minutes: A rich, creamy cocoa note shines — deep yet smooth. Floral-tinged oud anchors the composition, with spicy, ashy amber in the base. --- Personal Notes: Sweet, delicious, and creamy — with beautiful, easy-to-wear oud. This scent feels well-balanced and harmoniously blended.
