Keep On Moving

Update: I recently picked up Loewe 7 Cobalt and I get a similarity between the two. The Marley is sweeter where the Loewe leans more woody. They got the same vibe but different. This is the hands down the best of the Marley line. It’s perhaps their most masculine one. I’ve had my nose on Simmer Down, Lights Down Low, & Mellow Mood. This one is #1 for me on their collections. I find this to be a blue-green fragrance. It’s not entirely blue (shower gel, soapy) and not entirely green (aromatic, herbaceous). It’s a mix of both. This lends it an ability to be versatile, slightly mass appealing, and slightly designer-y. I get a mix between Maluls newest offerings- Citizen Jack Alpine and the new Ocean Noir (I have both) with a nicer twist. The top is nice. Salty watery and sweet fruity fresh. The mint isn’t in the drivers seat but more like lending a coolness to it. It opens slightly sharp, with a bit of metallic minerality. The pineapple in the mid is soft (technically the description says pineapple water) I can’t sense the seaweed (sometimes seaweed can get funky). And I’m not a big fan of ginger but it’s so well blended I can’t detect it. Outside of the slight spiciness this fragrance carries. Initial opening projection is great and it should last. I just got it, sprayed it on for 45 mins then showered. It was still on my skin after the shower. Faintly but easily detected. If you need something different in that realm of Blue or Green freshies... this one needs to be in your collection. Amazing.

The house of Marley has created an absolutely must have fragrance with “keep on moving”. The suggested wearing seasons are spring and summer. However, the notes are versatile enough for year around wear. The parfum itself does not smell like any designer fragrance on the market and is completely niche. If you’re looking for a scent that smells both professional with a touch of adventure this is the scent for you. The scent is a combination of aquatic, earthy with slightly green undertones in the best of ways. Truly one of the best “freshies” I own.

I don’t know if the powers that be over at Michael Malul actually believe in their product anymore, man. Listen, I own over 30 Michael Malul fragrances, and I genuinely have a heart for this company. I really do. I think Michael Malul has the potential to be a great entry-level, affordable niche house. But I’m going to be completely honest with you: over the past five years, I feel like they’ve slowly started putting out more and more subpar fragrances. This one smells good. I’m not going to sit here and tell you it doesn’t smell good. It does. But there’s no depth to it. There’s no performance. And honestly, that seems to be the problem with a lot of their newer releases. It smells good for about 10 minutes, and then it’s like...where did it go? And then you have the audacity to try to sell this for $140, $150 retail? No. And I understand what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to position themselves like Chanel, like Louis Vuitton—where they control the pricing and stand behind the value of the product. But you can’t charge luxury prices if the juice isn’t performing like a luxury fragrance. Now, I know there are vendors out there where you can find these for reasonable prices. You just have to search for them. But I’m talking about Michael Malul themselves and their major online retailers. These fragrances are routinely sitting around $120 to $150, and in my opinion, they are absolutely not worth that. Honestly, I wouldn’t pay more than about $50 for this. And I think Michael Malul really needs to take a hard look at some of the perfume materials and formulas they’re using, because the performance just isn’t there. Or find better perfumers. Again, I’m not a perfumer. I’m not sitting here pretending I know how to fix the company. I don’t have the answer. I just know what I like. I know what smells good. And I know when something isn’t worth the money. And this one smells good—but it ain’t it. So my biggest caution to you right now is this: do not pay $140 for this fragrance. If you can find it wholesale or heavily discounted around $45 to $50? Okay. Now we’re talking. But at $140? Absolutely not. Because at the end of the day, Michael Malul has some really good fragrances. I own over 30 of them for a reason. I just think something needs to change. Because right now, in my opinion, the price and the performance are just not matching up.
