Santal Austral Extrait

High-quality ingredients blended beautifully with each other. This fragrance screams sandalwood and it's VERY long-lasting. One spray on your clothes and it sticks to them until the next day. Woody scents tend to be offensive, however the sandalwood in this is mixed well with the creaminess and sweetness of almond, in addition to the spicy touch of cardamom which makes it extremely wearable and addicting. The sillage is also insane as others can smell mine from across the room. Nevertheless, it is not at all a safe blind-buy and over-spraying may cause headache to others. Rating: 9.5/10. This fragrance keeps the maturity of woody notes but somehow gives it a twist at being youthful and not so overbearing.

This is one of the best interpretations of sandalwood I’ve come across. There’s something about it that pulls me into that dark, magical atmosphere—almost like the Black family’s house in the Harry Potter story, with its mysterious, slightly ominous energy. It’s a wood lover’s dream: smooth, deep, and hypnotic in its seemingly one-dimensional simplicity. In my opinion, it even outshines Encre Noire A L'Extrême. Aurélien Guichard remains one of the few truly talented perfumers working today, and this is another example of his mastery.

I really enjoy this. But I think it smells very similar to BDK Gris Charnel Extrait. But I prefer the drydown of this. Longevity seems great and silage is similar to the other extraits (except radical rose which is a complete beast). I can easily smell it on clothes and skin 8-12 hours after but silage is probably not great at that point. But in its own right I think this is lovely but perhaps not alongside Gris Charnel - they are just way too similar to my nose. Then it would mostly be the collectors gene that would get satisfied.

This is gorgeous. Zero pickles. All sandalwood spa-like comfort and truly a fragrance for any occasion or any person. I wore it in 100 degree tropical island weather last week and 35 degree weather today. This has been one of my favorite fragrance purchases in the past 3 months (says a lot for me). I now have 3 of the MP extraits and 3 EDPs. I truly believe their commitment to high quality, linear fragrances is evident.

Better than the OG. Goes into a dark mysterious territory again as with the rest of the extraits its an improvement with a price tag. However this is significantly different from the OG and I would say is a different fragrance definitely worth sampling at least.

Haven't tried the OG, but wanted to try this one. I do like it, but it's sweeter than I expected. Very sweet and vanilla-like, almost like cookies, and not too woody for me. Doesn't seem worth the price. JPG Le Male Le Parfum almost seems like a cousin of this.

This is sooo good! My absolute favorite of all time is Dries Van Noten Vanille Camouflage. Santal Austral does not smell like DVN however there is something reminiscent of it here that I love so much. So comfy and cozy.

I loved the original, but this is much better and stronger. It's almost too much when you smell it up close, but in the air it's a luxurious, creamy, iris sandalwood. I love it! 😊

Smells so good, the sandalwood is just the perfect touch of creaminess to smoothen out the rough edges. Projects really well too.

Overrated. Not even close to the quality or richness of Gris Charnel Extrait. 7-10

Great fragrance composition, unbeatable longevity. Cardamom addition is noticeable, compared to EdP. The new note and reformulation adds a vibrant green and spiky touch to a composition which was pure smoothness before. As someone was writing it’s more alluring and enigmatic this way, and the dry down feels a bit darker and more profound (remember bois d’ebene?). A bit drier too, just a very little little bit more towards santal 33 territory (cardamom-sandal accord) despite maintaining its original smoothness. Despite its new intriguing inflection, I must say I prefer the original EdP, which is pure creamy sandal with that unique comforting ambery tonka drydown. If you like le labo santal better than the OG edp by matiere, this might be more likeable to you. Very alluring fragrance, mysterious and eternal. A must try!

I have been trying to decide between this one and the OG. I tested few times in store both on skin and paper. Last two times Ive sprayed it both on the skin so I can compare it. It is very weird because the OG version seems more potent, more rich and complex. The OG opening is really beautiful with what I think is that slightly spicy sweetness while the extrait feels super airy and I don’t get almost anything in the opening. The dry down becomes more interesting but definitely doesn’t feel like this is the higher concentration parfum. Both my mother and my wife thought the OG was stronger and more intense. I think thats what happens when they release 5 bottles at ones. Not enough time put into the process.

Never smelled the OG. At the time of writing this, the overall rating on this is 4.06. I agree because this is an ok sandalwood for me. I get mostly powdery notes up top with sandalwood and light spice of cardamom in the base. Smells good. Lasts like a skin scent but there is not much in the way of projection. For sandalwood - Everlit is a more dynamic one for me that I LOVE! There isnt any dill misconceptions with it and it lasts and is so cozy. Ill wear this, very casually or perhaps in a layer. Not bad. Not special.

I think the original Santal Austral is better, but obviously this one is amazing as well. I am a huge fan of the original.

This smells like a very pure sandalwood to me, pure in that I've smelled this kind of sandalwood in a couple of scents already. It's very raw, like you're smelling the base component of sandalwood in perfume but dialed up to 7 (not 10 exactly). What that's like, it's a sweet-ish aromatic ambery wood scent. I don't pick up a lot of the sweetness or smoothness. It's sandalwood alright! But as an extrait and for the whopping price I don't know if it's worth it. It's an honest scent though, I mean the approach Matiere Premiere wanted to do with their extraits paired with their approach to perfume of letting raw ingredients shine their brightest. I haven't smelled normie Santal Austral, but I got to compare the two Encens Suaves. On those, I think the intensity of incense is deep and interesting. Here, though it's dark and rich, it feels incomplete to me! It's like isolating the vocals in a song. Like you have the acapella version, and it sooounds good, the singer really sang their heart out, but I'm not sure it's what I'll keep coming back to.

Way too strong for me. I dislike the synhetic base that I find overpowers the good notes that it has like the sandalwood, cardamom etc. This nasty base remains on clothes forever. Like my eyes would feel irritated and have trouble seeing in a room that is overlit with artificial light, my nose gets overwhelmed by the base of this parfum. It is not worth 600 euro to me. There is nothing in it that makes it this expensive and it definitely is not a great artistic work. It is an average scent which is put on steroids with too much synthetics. The price tag must be merely branding.

First off, to me this is heavily masculine leaning. Secondly, I feel you can find the same if not better heavily cologney wood scent at any Bath & body Works in their men’s section. It is headache inducing, and not a safe blind buy at all. Sample first.

Out of the five extraits, this is my least favourite. It smells quite "designery" to me. With that said, the EDP isnt for me either. It is nice, and I did receive a compliment from one spray on my hand.

The iris feels slightly bitter, but the pickle-like quality of the sandalwood eventually comes through. The notes that it gives off seem to get more and more sour as time progresses. Like all other extraits from this house, good longevity, bad projection. This is a hard pass for me.

It feels like I’ve smelled a poorly made clone of Gris Charnel Extrait — yes, that’s exactly how it is, honestly.

Maybe it's me but I can't get any traction with this or the EDP--epic fail.

Unpleasing fragrance : harsh bitter and acidic opening with woodiness, very synthetic. You have to wait 40min in the dry down for it to start smoothing out and reveal the creamier aspect of sandalwood. Imagine a cheap loud screechy dupe for gris charnel. I would absolutely not recommend it by any means. It smells cheap and doesn’t deserve the price tag. The best creamy sandalwood on the market remains Zara Red Temptation sandalwood.

The common ambroxan base this brand uses is unbearable - very difficult to scrub this ugly cousin of Tom Ford off.

Florentine iris absolute, Siam benzoin absolute, Venezuelan tonka bean absolute, Nepalese black cardamom absolute... Sorry, but where exactly? As some ppl below have already noted, every interesting, quality component the company claims to have used in Santal Austral Extrait gets drowned in the bog of woody ambers. This stuff is loud, obnoxious and absolutely unbearable. "Creamy and smooth"? Guys, REALLY? 😂 My boyfriend is immensely tolerant towards my hobby and rarely complains no matter what I decide to put on. Figment, Night Flyer or The Night? Bring it on! This thing however almost led to us sleeping in separate rooms. Fortunately, love (and good taste) won in the end, as we both agreed this stuff is vile and had to be scrubbed off ASAP.

Is it similar to Gris Charnel Extrait? Not exactly the same scent but definitely if you love Gris charnel extrait then this going to be a love for you. The differences to me are clear, GC has heavy tea note and vetiver note that make it slightly heavier and more complex, maybe more daring for some people! Santal to me is more about spicy sandalwood without the black tea note and with nice creaminess, nuttiness, saltiness and slightly mineral feel in the drydown. Santal definitely more simple and less daring! Longevity is good, 7- 9 hours. I give it 9/10 to me it’s perfect! Not cheap!

This is definitely a million times better that the original Santal Austral. I am usually torn between the regular MP fragrances and their Extrait versions. I usually like both versions but with Santal Austral, the Extrait is far superior than the original.... this version is milkier and sweeter. It’s also classy and clean in a way but It still left me wishing it was still even more sweet.

Very nice Sandalwood and Iris combo but it’s extremely weak and a $600 price tag for 50ml is just robbery. I’m sure you can get a Sandalwood and Iris fragrance for way cheaper.

This smells exactly the same vibe as YSL 6 Place, only milkier. It would be redundant to own both. I'm deciding which one to keep and which one to sell.

Wow, I love this. It is so creamy and comforting, lasts long, just so beautiful. A definite winner for me, ideal.
