MCM Success

I got a bottle of this based on the review of Ramsey, where he was effusive in his praise, along with another 1980's honey fragrance, Pacoma Gatsby. Well, I've had a couple of bottles of Gatsby for a while, and its become my holy grail Honey fragrance. Success is much lighter than the deeper, denser, heavier Gatsby. There really should be a "Fresh" accord in the listed accord stack above. As a matter of fact, I'd put 'Fresh' where 'Floral' is listed in the and move the Floral down the stack. The carnationmanifests as spicy cloves, the jasmine is very subdued for such a powerful Floral note, and the rose is very subdued as well. Its like the thick honey has been diluted with water. I ended up spraying quite a bit of Success on, trying to get better performance. I get natural wafting of Gatsby to my nose long into the wear cycle, whereas I struggle to achieve that with Success, althoughits very nicely persistent in the drydown. I was having flashbacks of my struggles with the more modern Cartier L'Invol, which is even far more lighter than Success. Success spares us the pissiness of both Givenchy Gentleman EDT and Boss Number One, but at least the juice in my bottle of Success doesn't offer the full bouquet of notes that the Givenchy and Boss do. Boss is especially beautiful after the soiled diaper facet subsides in the drydown. In scent profile, the lightness and freshness of Success perhaps seems a bit closer to the Givenchy than to Boss Number One or Gatsby, but only in that quality of freshness. Perhaps Success is a better, more vintage approximation of L'Invol. Success is a nice vintage scent, better than modern Honey scents, but I generally prefer my honey scents thicker, denser, and with more wafting power, altjough Luciano Pavarotti Pour Homme is another fresh scent with honey, and also fantastic like Success. Its great, but Gatsby is better for me. Gatsby is a better non-pissy vintage alternative honey scent to Boss Number One and Givenchy Gentleman EDT also. Update: 2nd wearing and performance is somewhat better with 12+ sprays. Very nice honey patchouli into the drydown, where Im catching those natural wafts to the nose. Still a light honey patchouli. But overall this has grown on me. Bought a second bottle, splash 100ml this time. 5/5 now.

This is attempting to be the embodiment of money and power. That, in itself, brings a certain level of achievement. I like this way more than givenchy gentleman, incredible honeyed floral patchouli.

MCM Success smells quite nice and all, but it really is just their take on the honeyed animalic patchouli that started with Givenchy Gentleman in the 70s and reached peak popularity with the original Boss for Men. The really is no need to search out this scarce release, it falls under the category of "also ran." Vintage lovers should know about the many "also rans" of the past; there were just as many then as there are today in the perfume industry.

As for me, I had to wear this over a period of years to "get it". At first, I was bowled over. I have owned numerous bottles of this and the first one ( that left the biggest impression ) was by far the strongest. Don't ask me why and I still have a small atomizer I saved of it to compare with all the others. Regardless, it took persistence on my part, but I now hold it in regard. Success opens with an alcoholic blast that quickly morphs into an offbeat citric rose. The honey, that is evident in the entire composition, also is exposed here and it's more gritty and resinous than feral. At least to me, there aren't animalics present. There is, however, testosterone abounding. Tobacco is next to assimilate. Together with patchouli, vetiver and wood, they raise the decibels of the tobacco note and the effect is masculine, powerful and confident. This really is boardroom and I wonder if The Donald wears this in secret while trolling the El Cheapo bearing his name to the public. The drydown of Success is everything just explained at a slightly lower volume while turning more and more leathery. I like this fragrance quite a bit, but I cannot see anyone but a mature male donning this. Honey, Tobacco, Leather and Wood accented with edgy florals and earthiness. "Sound like a recipe for Success? I won't stake my reputation on it, but it sure smells like one to me. Thumbs up from Aromi from the house no one knows about and its C.E.O. of Success." OK, this is absolutely amazing. i was curious about it, having read mention of it somewhere, and got lucky. Someone had 15 Minis for sale. Bought them all. After wearing twice, i went strait to the computer and found 2 100ml bottles and bought them. I absolutely love this. it is hard to describe as Ive never smelled anything like it. It is clearly from a time when Fragrances were made with great care as thee are what , 19 notes listed? i am sorry my nose is not articulate enough to accurately describe this, i feel like i'm cheating you. Take this assessment with a grain of salt, as i'm reaching, just to give you an idea. Take Herod, have it fall for HdP 1740, but not a 1740 whose parents were both 1740. a 1740 whose dad was a pure 1740, but whose mom was half tobacco vanile, half Knize ten. then take that baby, have it grow up and get involved in a polygamous marriage where she has 3 different husbands. Have her get pregnant with a baby, but she has no idea who the father is out of those three.That baby is McM Success. That's the best i can do. i just know this stuff is aptly named. wear this, and it screams man, screams serious, and screams successful. longevity 10/10 silage 10/10

Considering when this was released and the notes, it sounds like it's similar to Boss Number One.
