Cuir Cavalier

So cuir Cavalier is a no holds barred leather. A modern, twangy, patent leather, jockstrap of a thing. Masses of saffron adorn this fragrance and pretty much dominate and having used saffron extensively I can attest that real good Iranian/Spanish Saffron tinctures are quite fleeting things, despite their power they are true top notes. This is a carefully constructed and realistic saffron accord, perfectly complimented by castoreum and oud (I suspect) which are fixing and giving similar dense, yet transparent qualities. The tingle that this gives to your nose is quite something to behold. It's not woody particularly and animal-like rather than truly animalic. I detected a faint, wet floral in the opening too, freshening and giving a marginally more classic direction to what is essentially a pretty modern fragrance. Immediately I described the aesthetic as 'floral leather' in the same way I would with Cuir de Russie (Chanel) or something? Not that they smell anything alike. I look forward to wearing this for it's bite and it's purrr and because I love saffron, but I've a feeling this might polarise. Update 11/02/26 Well six years later and I find my review above not comprehensive because I glossed over the rose in this perfume and the vegetal, tomato leaf sort of facet which kinda comes with saffron in a strange way. All of this conjures a leather accord and the rose is clearly a big player, the saffron more so in the opening but they go together like peas and carrots and revisiting this again today I'm taken with how much it resembles some slightly crude fumbling's into perfumery I had attempted myself. This is not me besmirching a talented, professional perfumer but perhaps speaks to my reckless overdose of extremely expensive natural saffron and rose absolute materials. Clearly this has more refinement but has a rawness and visceral immediacy which I respect but don't necessarily love.

This opening is reminiscent of Histories De Parfums 1.3, but done better. Into the heart and it's starting to remind me of Kilian Rose Oud and by default, Gold Oudwhich I love. This has the additional note of leather, and isn't quite as fruity or rose dominant. The drydown reminds me of Kilian Musk Oud, but I prefer this as musk oud can give me a migraine. I love the way the orange, saffron, rose, cypriol, musk and leather work together here. It smells so deep, luxurious, and expensive. This would pair well with a Tom Ford suit. Cuir Cavalier is seriousand polished. It feels like a sleek black luxury car. I love all the fragrances I've mentioned, and if you're looking for a rose oud saffron, MDCI Cuir Cavalier should 100% be on your list to try. When I run out of these other fragrances I've mentioned in the coming years, it will be on my list to buy. I feel like this is a modern interpretation of the painting. Rather than a horse this man rides a racing bike, wearing a perfectly tailored and polished black biker jacket with metal accents glistening in the sun like they are a part of the bike itself. A smoky black leather dominates a light but persistent sour rose. I really just get back leather and rose, a touch of metal and smoke and with a bit of vanilla and oud creeping in at the late dry down, although it never becomes very sweet. There is a heavy dose of saffron here but it’s very smooth (not the fuzzy saffron of Oud for greatness) giving the impression of polished leather, the rose adding a kiss of romance. Performance and longevity are powerful, four spays will last all day and that’s the aura this gives - powerful, a bit dangerous, irresistible on the homme or femme fatale type.

There's a natural tanginess to rose that Nathalie Feisthauer has accentuated by adding lots of saffron to it; and of course rose blends beautifully with leather. This opens very sharply, but then smooths down to something genuinely softer and romantic. MDCI Parfums are too expensive for my blood; but for those who can afford it, this is a lovely and unusual choice. Just a few drops (or one spritz) fills an entire room.

Do you remember those plastic beach balls we used to play with as kids on the beach? That's what this smells like to me, it's strange, but very nice. Cant wait to see how this develops, and what my nose picks up after multiple wears

A wonderful mix of saffron, leather and roses. It smells sophisticated and has a linear aroma.

Loads of saffron, a green natural smelling rose, and polished smooth black leather. I find the saffron to be way overdone here and a bit overwhelming. A pass for me

I don't know with this one, it seems so different in style than what I normally associate with MDCI. Their later releases, the 'paintings', seem to be way more mainstream oriented than what I've grown to love about the house. This particular perfume probably is the biggest case in point. Yes, it performs amazing, but I just don't think it smells creative or original. If I want to buy good quality oud/rose/saffron inspired perfumes I prefer houses like Rasasi who do it so well for a tenth of the prize. And it's even more frustrating because Cuir Garamante by shows that MDCI really does know to do amazing stuff with rose notes.

Strong rose, bit of leather. Leaning more towards that Turkish delight type of rose. I feel that the rose clashes a bit with the leather base. Not harmonious like the rose oud in MFK oud satin mood. Smells like someone had dropped a bottle of rose scented perfume on a leather handbag. One could argue that the leather brings an interesting niche aspect, but I don't expect this fragrance to be setting many trends for this note combination. Especially since I think mdci has captured it rather well-- its just not an endearing combo.

The rose here smells quite fresh, like rose water. Unfortunately, its combination with the saffron and leather notes gives it a sort of plasticky smell. The dry down is calmer and you can sort of smell the citrus, but that doesn't rescue it for me. There are more intriguing rose fragrances out there!

Sour rose, leather and saffron makes it palpatable, not really breathtaking or clever combination. Lasts long though. Blended well.

Needs to be checked again, because it wasn’t bad — leather, darkness, but elegance and some depth.

Mr. Marchal, owner of @parfumsmdci, chose several famous paintings from museum collections, guided only by his own artistic taste, and invited several perfumers to create fragrances based on the emotions that they (the perfumers) feel in front of a certain canvas. The painting behind uir Cavalier is Théodore Géricault's "The Officer of the Imperial Horse Guard Charging, depicting a liutenat at Napoleon's time gallopping his horse ready to fight. As I see it, Cuir Cavalier is an excellent juicy and bright perfume made of an interplay between a berry-fruity rose and saffron-leather bitterness. As the perfume developes, M.me Feisthauer works her magic and the profile becomes less and less berry-like, while the tart saffron part grows bigger As a result, the fragrance darkens, becomes sharper, tobaccoish and earthy, and finally becomes a deep oriental leather. With a good projection and nice sillage, this perfume i for mundane events, a very elegant soireé at an embassy. You won't pass unnoticed while leaving an inviting trail that whispers pure luxury. واقعا فکر میکردم دیگه دنیای عطر سازی از این ژانر اشباع شده باشه و کسی دیگه خیال ساختن این سبک روایح رو نداشته باشه . اما ام دی سی آی گویا دوست داشته تو آرشیو هنریه خانه عطرسازیشون ی عطر بشدت عربی و حرمی هم داشته باشند ‌ . کویغ شوالیه با طوفانی از رز و زعفرون شروع میشه هیچ خبری هم از شاخص بودن بوی عود و چرم در شروع نیست تو قلب کویغ شوالیه بواسطه نت عسل حس بوی رز و زعفرون شیرین‌تر میشه بازم اینجا خبری از بوی عسل نیست فقط حس شیرین و سیروپی میده تقریبا بعد از نیم ساعت با حفظ فضای حرمی کمی حال و هوای عودی مشهود میشه که اینجای کار رایحه کلی به سمت روایح فاخر و گرون عربی پیش می‌ره و حس حرمی کمتر میشه رایحه کلی کویغ شوالیه کاملا بوی محیط اتبات عالیات رو تداعی می‌کنه . بویی که ایرانی ها ازش فراری هستند درای داون عطر هرچی میگذره بوی عود نفیستر احساس میشه کیفییت عطر مثل همیشه فوق العادست رایحه زیباست ولی نه برای ایرانی ها(چون این سبک بو : با بوی عطر مشهدیه) پخش بو تا ساعتها ادامه داره و ماندگاری به راحتی از ۱۲ ساعت روی پوست میگذره نکته مهم تو این عطر حضور نت عود بسیار باکیفییت و زیبا تو قلب عطر تا زوال عطره

Cuir Cavalier is an oriental floral leather. The fragrance starts with a beautiful rose note, the rose smells like turkish rose. The rose is combined with a sweet leathery saffron note in addition to hints of mandarin to give some freshness to the opening but it doesn’t last for a long time. The saffron note is present throughout the life of the fragrance. As the fragrance moves to the heart, a familiar combination of iris and cypriol starts appearing to give green powedery nuances, I don’t detect white honey but I think it adds some sweetness to the saffron. As the fragrance moves to the drydown, it becomes more leathery, the leather here is smooth and the combination of leather, saffron and rose is really beautiful. Oud is listed in the notes but it is just in the background. Overall, Cuir Cavalier is really a beautiful and unique fragrance which combines rose and leather, the saffron note here is really beautiful and realistic.

Opens up large with saffron. Give it 10 minutes to settle down. In the beginning the saffron butts heads with the rose a little giving it a metallic sour edge. The rose and citrus emerges and a camphorous menthol peaks out too. I love leather fragrances but this is pure and simple a saffron leading fragrance. It is interesting because of the opening being so assertive and curious. Does give you a bit to think about. The dry down is hard to pick up but a cedary wood lingered.

WHOOSH! Saffron bomb. Need some more wearings, but so far saffron dominates this big time. I may have some biological pre-disposition that in saffron heavy scents, saffron is all I can smell. (Same thing happens to me with NEW YORK OUD.) Nose pressed to flesh two hours after applying and it's all saffron all the time No vanilla, leather, musk, rose. Nothing but saffron. I hope others have a better experience with it.

Saffronic syrup with European style oud, & mandarin. It's more saffron than roses, and i believe the roses used here are Turkish because of the sweetness that it held. after a while a sweet leather comes up but the syrup saffron remains the conqueror. It's cute, and i think it's a variation of "Cuir Garamante" somehow! Nice.
