Le Barbier de Tanger

I hate reviews which go completely against the trend and off on a tangent comparing the subject fragrance to others, of which it bares no resemblance. So I apologise in advance but hear me out. I think barbier has one of the most exciting openings I’ve smelled for sometime. It opens with juicy punch of citrus and tangerine peel, then starts out on this rive gauche like, barbershop affair and you think okay, I’m feeling this. Then comes a Dior (or should I say Christian Dior?) Fahrenheit type accord lurking through this powdery Fougere. I thought there has to be Violet listed in the notes and combined with a dirty, oily, diesel smell which wouldn’t be out of place in a Xerjoff fragrance and somewhat of a signature of theirs I think. These two elements conspire for a brief moment to conjure up an old formula Fahrenheit, with non of the vanilla sweetness and dumbing down that has crept in to recent batches. Call me crazy but Thats what I get . I consider myself somewhat of an authority on the older Fahrenheit and I can honestly say a smidgen of it’s spirit graces this fragrance. Can someone please tell me they smell it too and I’m not just imagining things? However, As it settles after the first 20 mins or so this fades completely and the majority is a dazzlingly well rendered mix of green notes, lavender, oakmoss, cardamom, all of which was there to start with but caught up in that opening it gets a bit lost and jumbled. Le Barbier de Tanger is lovely, really lovely and a preference for me over Invasion Barbare. (Which is also very nice) It becomes more and more powdered and less distinct very quickly indeed, retreating down to the skin with a warmth of resins in the base. This composition has been given some thought and although the resulting fragrance might be a touch disappointing when all is said and done, I like the brief but thrilling ride it gave when first applied. This sadly applies to the performance and silage as well, becoming a skin scent after less than an hour and not projecting very much at all. When it’s really settled I get the modern aroma chemistry, and something salty and of the sea. I know what Calone smells like but I wouldn’t of necessarily thought that was it. I need to wear this again properly to give a better appraisal, because it is one them but I’d say on the whole shows promise but doesn’t quite deliver. It might have gotten away with it too but when you’re paying top wack, expectations are sky high for a reason. UPDATE 14/05/21: When I look back at reviews like this I'm staggered by how similar my thoughts are (rather than how much different) because I largely stick to what I said above, there's nothing 'wrong' with what I'm saying here as such. However, I hadn't tried Invasion Barbare in a while here and it shows because that is WAAAYY superior to this, it's the best of that style of fougere, end of conversation about that! Barbier de Tanger starddles the wonderfully natural feel and the incredibly hollow, sensation of woody and ambrox base materials. The brilliance shining through on occasion but I'm not that taken with this fragrance, it's good, complex all the stuff I said above and I like it but I'll never love it.

Fresh mediterranean elegance, very classy scent! Love the use of tangerine and calone along with the fougere accord (strengthened with vetiver) to make the olfactive representation of a barbershop in Tanger. The lavender and citrus opening is so beautiful that it keeps me smelling my wrist every few minutes and, while I don't find the drydown as engaging and some may even consider it dull, it does satisfy my cravings for a quality fresh fougere. Le barbier de Tanger vaguely reminds me of the once gorgeous Loewe Pour Homme (now a much weaker fragrance), with MDCI's being richer, fuller and generally much better done, though with weaker performance. I love this fragrance and it's in my opinion an excellent fougere, with very few I'd take ahead of it. However, when taking price into consideration, I do think there are better value options in the market. If price isn't an obstacle and you're looking for a fragrance of this profile, this is definitely worth sampling at least.

Oh, this is amazing! I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer this one to Invasion Barbare. Le Barbier de Tanger is simultaneously retro AND modern. It's clean, crisp and classically masculine, with pineapple and apple notes to modernize it. I love barbershop fragrances, and this is a great one. Where Invasion Barbare goes very powdery and reminds you of the soothing talc that a barber places on the back of your neck after a haircut, Le Barbier de Tanger calls to mind the amalgamated smells of a wet shave: Spicy, sweet shaving cream, the clean metal of the straight razor, the calming aftershave tonic and the smell of the barber's leather strap and case.

A fresh fougère, built around the classic structure of oakmoss and lavender. It leans on the greener side, supported by herbal notes, woods, and citrus. The composition feels well blended. Opening could come across as a bit harsh to some, but I would not dismiss it too quick. It does settle into a smoother barbershop scent with a texture that reminds me of shaving foam. In terms of fragrance comparisons, what came to mind was a combination of Chanel Platinum Égoïste and Creed Aventus. This one, however, feels a bit more natural and has more depth. Performance is above average, especially in terms of longevity. Lasts almost a full day for me.

Love this. Criminally underrated due to the brands own astronomical success with Invasion Barbare had this been in any other brand would’ve been huge. Classic barbershop fougere yet feels up to date even if it was reloten years ago. In my opinion if your looking for something in this category of fragrances this is a MUST try. Extremely elegant office fragrance so much so you could even wear this to a special occasion. Exceptional creation. Scent 10/10 Sillage Office friendly Performance could last the whole day but respray for your enjoyment Value 6/10 Great scent. Difficult to find discounted and retail is pricey for a fougere.

Genuinely does smell like a clean, refreshing barber shop. It's deliciously nostalgic. I really like this scent and plan on using it on days I shave. The lavender, oakmoss, and patchouli are evident to me. I wish I got more of the pineapple, haven't smelled that yet, but perhaps after some aging it will become more prominent. This is more herbal than I expected, but it's not earthy, its, as mentioned before, clean.

This perfume is highly underrated. I don't think it is 'uninspired' or 'safe' at all. It is a very sophisticated interpretation of classical fougeres with insane lasting power and good projection. The dry down is where the magic really starts to happen, I am a chronic wrist sniffer every time I wear this. As is the case for all MDCI fragrances, here too the blend really is much more than the sum of its parts.

A perfectly executed aromatic fougere, brought into the 21st century with lovely pineapple and apple notes in the heart. I can genuinely detect these and it makes me feel that I'm not just wearing another run of the mill barbershop scent. Performance and sillage excellent. I really love this. This is in my top 3 from the house along with Chypre Palatin and invasion Barbare. Overall: 9/10.

I love this because I get more woods off skin than something like Beau du Jour by TF. I actually like it more than Invasion Barbare even though that vanilla is really nice. Fresh, uplifting and puts me in a good mood every time I wear it. It is much less linear than other Fougere fragrances. Beautiful evolution and scent

Le Barbier de Tanger is a citrusy, herbal aromatic fougere. In the dry down, you pick up some earthy tones. Perfectly inoffensive. However, it is not worth the asking price. Update: This is so easy to wear. I keep reaching for it.

After smelling this, I finally understand the appeal of the "barbershop" genre. Smells just like shaving cream. If you wear this, expect your test levels to increase ten fold.

Parfums MDCI Le Barbier de Tangier is a more agreeable barbershop scent than Invasion Barbare, in my opinion, but lacks the daring elements to which many are drawn by Invasion Barbare. The easiest way of classifying the difference is to say that LBDT is lighter and cleaner, and therefore less potentially offensive than IB. LBDT is more citrus-intensive at the opening and fresher in the dry down, contra the heavy dose of patchouli I get out of IB in its dry down. Think citrus and lavender, giving way to petigrain and woods, mainly. I hardly get any apple or patchouli in the heart but this might have something to do with its performance, which isn't very strong. LBDT is safe, agreeable, but uninspiring, but I'd nonetheless aver that I like and would wear the scent, and would even buy a bottle if it were extremely lower in price, as $250 for 75ml is far too steep for a scent that's not terribly interesting, not a great performer, and vaguely resembles cheaper barbershop counterparts. 7 out of 10

This started as what I thought was a pleasant but pretty ordinary fougère, with lots of fairly standard elements (lavender, bergamot, and petit grain) on top--I was really surprised at first this was from MDCI Parfums, which has always been an interesting house for me. But, after the first twenty minutes or so, more started to develop in this perfume, with the pineapple, apple, and galbanum becoming more evident. The later stages of this reminded me of the complex designer fougères on the late 80s and early 90s, which are now pretty hard to find. This may be far from the most startling fragrance from MDCI, but its pleasures are its rich complexities in the drydown.

There is a striking resemblance in the structure of this perfume compared to MDCI's Ambre Topkapi: a fresh, citrus opening, backed by lavender, and an oakmoss-dominant base. That said, there are some differences. The opening of Barbier is more bitter/ medicinal due to the galbanum. I actually prefer this more than Topkapi fruity pineapple opening. Dry down is the same oakmoss/ vetiver/ amber combo, but I feel there's less emphasis on the amber, and the oakmoss is a bit more subdued. At some point, it smells alot like the older shaving foam. Overall, I prefer Barbier a lot more due to its subdued nature. However my quest for the perfect fougere continues...

Opens up with razor sharp (almost bleachy) citrus. Then it settled down to a herbal aromatic remisiscent of Platinum Egoiste. However Le Barbier comes across alot more natural and less «metallic» then Platinum Egoiste. I also get a quiet of a reminder of Colonia Club by Acqua Di Parma... I find this to be a great morning perfume after you have had a nice shave and want to get stuff done. Also theres something cold about it that reminds me of chrisp morning air, like the feeling of stepping out on the balcony on an early morning with birds chirping.

It’s smells like an elegant cross of Loewe Pour Homme and 1872, but heavier on the moss and a lot smoother with a lovely collaboration of petit grain and fruits. It’s really hard to shell out this kind of cash for such a standard DNA, though. Especially when Loewe Pour Homme can be had at a very affordable price and can provide a similar effect. The choice is up to you.

A rough and tough Aromatic Fougere with a classic vibe. Very similar to Lancetti Monsieur, so whoever voted against that comparison either has never smelled it or has a bad nose. Also a bit similar to Milano Cento Him. I guess it's the oakmoss and galbanum that gives this that rough and tough edge. A modern-day 80's powerhouse vibe. It's on my to-buy list.

Hi there, for those who cannot try mdci in a near store I recommend trying Ramon Monegal Umbra that has some similarity to this one. It's a love hate Perfum, very grassy and green/vetivery (earthy), not for every nose. Masculine, overpriced, not very creative mix nor result. A lot of ingredients but in the same time quite linear in my opinion.
