MUSK MANTRA by Memoirs of a Perfume Collector A Ghost in the Old Library “For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror.” — Rainer Maria Rilke Musk Mantra by Memoirs of a Perfume Collector (Extrait de Parfum, 2023; created by Harry Sherwood) does not announce itself. It materialises — like the scent of an old library before the lamps are lit, where leather bindings, dust, skin and ink have merged into something quietly sentient. From the first breath, this is a perfume that feels learned, archival, almost monastic in its restraint, yet undeniably carnal beneath the surface. The opening is dense with animalic musk, unapologetically filthy yet polished to a dull, aristocratic sheen. Deer musk is the axis around which everything turns: warm, intimate, faintly feral, but never crude. It is musk as history remembers it — before sanitisation, before cosmetic politeness. Threaded through this darkness is a funereal floral veil, anchored by the strange, nocturnal presence of night-blooming cereus. Though unfamiliar as a singular note, its role is unmistakable: a flower that exists only in darkness, blooming briefly, privately, and vanishing before dawn. It lends the opening a gothic luminosity, as pale blossoms glimpsed through fogged glass at midnight. This is not decay; it is dignified secrecy. As the perfume moves inward, the heart reveals itself with measured solemnity. Orris butter unfurls slowly — powdery, rooty, and austere — bringing with it the scent of old parchment, powdered gloves, and the soft hush of footsteps on woollen carpets. It tempers the animalic core without erasing it, allowing filth and refinement to coexist in perfect, uneasy balance. Here, cinnamon glows quietly beneath the surface, never sweet, never gourmand, but gently warming — like embers hidden beneath ash, or the last trace of heat in a stone hearth long after the fire has died. The florals, pressed together into a dark, shadowed accord, feel bruised rather than blooming, elegant in their restraint, contributing to the sense of ceremonial gravity that permeates the composition. This is where Musk Mantra reveals its true nature: calm, austere, and profoundly self-possessed. It does not seduce through excess, but through authority. The musk feels lordly, inherited, almost feudal — as if it belongs not to a body alone, but to a lineage. There is something deeply aristocratic here, not in wealth, but in bearing: the assurance of someone who does not need to be seen to be felt. In the dry-down, the perfume settles into its final incantation. The iris gradually dissolves, leaving behind a softened, more intimate musk, now supported by ambrette’s earthy, seed-like warmth. The animalic edge cleans itself only slightly — never becoming white, never becoming polite — but instead turns contemplative, skin-bound, and deeply personal. What remains is the scent of presence after departure: the chair still warm, the book still open, the air still holding the trace of someone who mattered. If this fragrance had a colour, it would be fog-laden grey, confirming that not all Gothic beauty must be black. It evokes the melancholic stillness of overcast days, the kind of introspection that comes with silence rather than solitude. There is a musical quality to it — cold yet edged with warmth — recalling the ethereal melancholy of Lycia, where emotion is stretched thin and luminous against vast, empty space. Completely unisex, though faintly masculine in its severity, Musk Mantra is deceptively wearable. Projection is moderate, never intrusive, yet its longevity and sillage are near-eternal, clinging to fabric and memory alike. At approximately €225, this is not merely a perfume but an investment in atmosphere — a work of olfactory literature rather than ornament. Among the many musk fragrances I have encountered over the years, this stands apart as something rare and lasting. This is not just a masterpiece — it is, without exaggeration, a muskterpiece: profound, restrained, mournful, and beautiful in its refusal to compromise. A scent worth saving for, waiting for, and ultimately keeping close, like a beloved volume pulled from the shelf only when the moment is right.

Initial opening has a putrid smell, then that diminishes after 5 mins and a powdery smell emerges, after around 30 mins or so it changes and the aromas of sweet smelling florals appear. On myself it seems to get better as the day goes on. The more i moved the more i could smell it. I really liked this as it seemed to get better and better as the day went on. It lasted a good 8 hours and I really liked it. Would i wear it? Yes Would i buy it? i am tempted but the price tag needs to be lower (but i would gladly accept as a gift).

Musk is prominent from the start. It's one of those that teeter between clean and dirty, like exaltolide or velvione. There is a floral, ever so slightly spicy accord, but not too sweet. The sweet floral accord is stronger on my chest than on my arms, where musk reigns supreme. A comfortable and comforting scent, but rather simple. Stays on the skin for a good 6-7 hours, projects a bit in the first hour but becomes a personal bubble very quickly. Your experience may vary.

Its a nice musk on skin, but reminds me of when I would leave the hair salon when I was younger - clean, freshly silk pressed and curled. I love that feeling but not sure I want this to be my perfume for the day.

I found this musk to have some bite to it, an unexpectedly skanky edge. Neither masculine nor feminine, upon first impressions I did not enjoy its aroma, but I did not try it on skin.

Smells like walking into a barn at the county fair.

So Powdery, with old antique shop vibe. I can smell books papers as I'm in a library. of course, i bought it with zero hesitation.
